Shoulder Setting | Stability | Shoulder Exercises Part 1 | Start Your Pain Relief

Shoulder Setting Instructions: 1) Place towel under active arm, tightly in the armpit 2) Support the active arm with your non-active arm (do not tug, just support it) 3) Move the active arm in a motion down and in towards your rib cage. Relax traps, pecs, lats as you do this motion. You should feel the contraction in your armpit muscles 4) Hold for about 15 seconds and relax. See health care profession for appropriate amount of reps 5) SHAKING IS NORMAL. Ideally hold until shaking stops. Scapular Clocks instructions: 1) stand, sit, or lie down in neutral spine 2) imagine your shoulder is a clock so that toward your head is 12 o'clock, toward your feet is 6 o'clock 3) Slowly and in a controlled manner move your shoulder toward 12 o'clock. Check if your motion is smooth and linear. If not, continue to make that motion until the motion is smooth 4) Repeat for 1 o'clock, 2 o'clock, etc. 5) Go clockwise and counterclockwise Part 2 of our shoulder exercise series: Scapular Clocks or Shoulder Clocks. PNF with Dowel instructions: 1) Place hand of target shoulder on top and hand of healthier shoulder on bottom 2) Apply resistance to target shoulder with healthy shoulder by either pushing or pulling gently. If there's any shaking, hold until shaking stops. 3) Slowly let your healthy side win until you feel like you lose stability in that range. 4) Slowly let your target side win as you resist with the healthy side. 5) Repeat until you have strength in all ranges of your shoulder The fourth and last part (for now) of our shoulder exercises series. This is the most difficult as it is a long lever exercise, but it's like having your own "at home" physical therapist because you can PNF yourself. PNF stand for proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation and any good physical therapist does it. Make sure you have the stability in your shoulder through our other exercises before you begin this one. If it's not difficult for you, you're most likely doing it incorrectly. Window Washing | Neuromuscular Strength | Shoulder Exercises Part 3 | Wax on Wax off

Window Washing instructions: This may seem like a light exercise, but you will feel an intense burn in your rotator cuff muscles IF you are doing it correctly. The key is slow and controlled. If you feel it in your neck or trap, you are most likely not ready for this exercise, so stop and return to Shoulder Setting or Scapula Clocks. 1) Stand 45 degrees from a wall and about 1 and a half feet away so that your elbow is bent 2) Press towel against wall with hand 3) Stick your opposite hand in the armpit of the active arm to ensure that these muscles are contracting as you do the exercise 4) Move the towel in small, controlled circles as if washing a window or waxing on and waxing off a car 5) Reverse direction after about a minute 6) As always, relax your traps, pecs, and lats THE PROGRESSION 1) Instead of using your palm, you can use your fist if you feel nerve tension while doing the exercise 2) For a harder workout, take a step away from the wall and lock your elbow while window washing 3) For a harder workout, stand closer to the wall and window wash higher. The higher you wash, the harder the workout 4) For different ranges, stand at different angles to the wall so that you can exercise different ranges of your shoulder This is the 3rd exercise in our shoulder exercise series and requires good neuromuscular awareness along with range and stability. It is a great way to increase your shoulder stability even more and allow you to access more strength in wider ranges.
