Connor Murphy here today with Six Pack Shortcuts. Today we're going to try and get some girl's numbers. Looks like I got a bit of a belly, right? Well, today I'm going talk to a few different women about getting abs as a New Year's resolution... Let's see what happens when I take some of their tips and build up my six pack abs! Since it is a new year, a lot of you guys out there mya have made some kind of New Year's resolution to get in shape - lose belly fat, get a six pack, build muscle, etc. I have one question for all of you: Why? Yeah, you can get a six pack and look shredded, but what is the reason behind it? Maybe it's to get the attention of that certain somebody? Or maybe it's to improve your confidence? Either way, making the goal to get a six pack all starts with why it's most important to you. If you're like me in the video, I needed tips on how to build up my six pack abs. I took some advice from these girls I spoke with and they said to do: -Sit-ups -Jumping jacks -Planks -Burpees -Run a marathon I didn't even know how many to do to get my abs...Most guys don't either. Men out there think that these same exercises and methods are how to get six pack abs, but really, there's much more to it. I made deals with these women that if I got six pack abs by the end of the year, they would give me their numbers... I would've had to lay there doing like 1,000,000 sit-ups before I could get that girls number! So my final question is: do YOU want to do that? Didn't think so. How to Get Toned Abs (IN ANY LIGHTING!)

The more popular way that “toned abs” is defined is one that refers to a leaner more visible set of abdominal muscles. This is and always will be achieved through a focus on nutrition. You must lower your level of body fat if you want to see the shape of the muscle underneath. If you want to get muscles that are already developed to show more clearly, you have to improve your diet so that your overlying body fat can be decreased. The thick fatty tissue can obscure even the best set of abs at even 12% body fat or more. In order to really see your abs you need to follow a good nutrition plan that can help you to lower your body fat to at least 10% or less (ideally 7%). That said, there are things that you can do in the gym to help increase ab muscle tone that will have an effect on how your muscles look and feel even at rest. You see, every muscle has a resting level of “tone” in it that determines it’s state of activity or alertness. This degree of muscle activation is not under voluntary control. It is there to help keep the muscle in a constant state of alertness and readiness for action. This type of tone can also protect the joints that the muscles are crossing. For instance, when you get tired you may find that your head starts to bend back as you doze off. You likely then get startled back to being awake as your head snaps back to the upright position. This is a defense mechanism triggered by a stretch reflex in the muscles of the anterior or lateral neck. In order to protect the spine from a compressed state, the muscles and their perceived stretch tension are forced to action at a moments notice. The more tone that is present in a resting muscle, the harder it will look and the more impressive it will be. Think about what happens when you hold your arm out to your side and flex your arm. When unflexed the muscle looks softer and less defined. Contract it just a little bit and you immediately see more definition and hardness. In the gym, you can actually increase your resting level of involuntary muscle tone by training the muscles with stretch loaded techniques and increasing the difficulty level of the exercises. For ab exercises and training, this means selecting hanging bar movements. The ab exercises done from a hanging or pullup bar place more of a stretch on the abs in the eccentrically loaded or stretched position. Additionally, they are harder to perform and therefore require the contribution of much more core muscles in order to do them. The increased contribution of the additional muscles awakens the previously dormant or uncalled upon muscle fibers that weren’t needed for the sub maximal intensity exercises and leads to an overall increase in resting tone. Over time, especially when combined with a good diet and nutrition plan, leads to much more visible and hard looking abs at rest. If not, then you could be missing out on a great way to etch in those deeper, more chiseled looking abs by not training your abdominals with enough resistance. Weighted ab workouts, like this one with dumbbells, can provide a great way to overload your abs and help get you out of the core training rut you might find yourself right now. To perform this ab workout, you will need a couple of sets of dumbbells. Start with a set that will be challenging for you to complete the ten reps required of you in each exercise, without it being too heavy that you cannot perform the moves in good form. Once you have identified this weight, drop down by five pounds each time and choose 3 more sets of dumbbells. You should have a total of 4 pairs of weights. Note, if your starting weight is such that you cannot select four pairs of dumbbells that is ok. You can complete your final sets using just your bodyweight. To begin, sit down and grab the heaviest pair of dumbbells. Perform a weighted Russian Twist with both dumbbells crossing over to one side and then the other. The key is to keep your abs tight and your core engaged to prevent overrotation or uncontrolled rotation. This is one of the most important functions of the abs and one that is sure to be tested by this first exercise. Complete 10 reps to each side and immediately move onto the next exercise in the workout. Next is the weighted Otis Up. In this ab exercise, you will lie flat on your back with the dumbbells extended overhead as if doing a bench press. In one move, you will sit up and keep the weights directed at the ceiling the entire time. Once you reach the full sit-up, slowly lower yourself back down to the floor with your abs eccentrically contracting to control the descent. Perform 10 reps of this move and proceed immediately to the next exercise in the workout. Next up is the single arm dumbbell rollout. This is a great exercise that challenges your abs eccentrically once again. Rest on one forearm and hold the dumbbell with the opposite hand. Roll the dumbbell away from you as you work to keep your abs tight and engaged the whole way out. Perform ten reps on each arm and proceed to the final exercise in this ab workout. Finally, wrap up this ab workout with dumbbells by getting into position to perform a one arm renegade row. In the pushup position and with a dumbbell in each hand, row each arm ten times making sure not to over rotate your torso as you pull the weight up. Perform on both sides. This is just the first round of this brutal ab workout however. From here, keep your rest to a minimum and grab the next set of dumbbells in line and repeat. See if you can make it to the end of this ab workout with dumbbells without needing to rest. But the first thing you must do when trying to get your abs lean is lower your overall body fat. There is no such thing as spot reduction so if you're hoping for this workout to burn fat off your abs, it's not going to happen. But if your body fat is low already and you're trying to build muscle on your obliques to get that "V" cut appearance. Try out these exercises with 30 seconds rest between each one for as many rounds as you can. 1. Spiderman Plank Crunch - Roll your shoulders out to stabilize your body, keep your body in a straight line and drive one knee outward and up to your elbow while crunching at the midsection. To make this harder, you can implement a pushup with the crunch. 2. Rotating Leg Lift Extensions - Starting position is with your back on the ground and legs up towards the ceiling. Once here, you will bring your butt/lower back off the ground by extending your legs towards the ceiling.. But while you do this, make sure you are implementing the twist of your hips otherwise it will only target lower abs and not obliques. 3. Floor Wipers - Starting in the same position as the leg lift extensions except with your arms out to the side for shoulder stabilization. From there, you will lower your legs down to one side until your feet are about 2 inches off the ground and you will bring your legs back up to starting position. Make sure you are focusing on engaging your obliques here and not using your upper body to power your leg movement. 4. Bicycles - Lay on your back with your legs out straight, your hands behind your head and your elbows out to the side. From here you will bring one knee up and one elbow down to meet that knee. What you want to focus on here is the twisting and crunching of your ABS! Imagine as if you are trying to get your shoulder to touch your knee so that you're not cheating your way through the exercise. Well, even if your enthusiasm is there I’m going to show you how to determine if you can get an 8 pack or whether your sights should be set on six pack abs or maybe even 4 pack abs instead. There is a quick test that I’m going to reveal in this video that you can do to determine the genetics of your anatomy and find out what your abs will look like if your body fat is low enough to see them. First thing is to assess your current level of body fat. If you are carrying a lot of body fat around your waist at the moment (not just a little bit that is hiding your abs) but enough that you would consider yourself too fat to see any ab definition at all then you probably won’t gain much from this test. If you are under 20-25 percent body fat this will work. To start, stand up and grab as much of the fat and skin that you can around the area of your belly button. Make sure to point your fingers inward when you do this. Once you’ve grabbed hold of this, pull it outward. Contract your muscles underneath your skin and fat and you will notice that they pull away from this tissue and make it easier for you to distinguish the pure muscle below. From here, use your pointed fingers to “strum” up and down on the rectus abdominus muscle below. Make sure your fingers are below your belly button when you are doing this. If you can feel a line at the level of the belly button then you can develop a solid six pack as the connective tissue band that runs from the linea alba is present and dividing your abs in such a way so that you can have six separate areas if the body fat is low enough. From here, move your fingers lower and see if you can strum or palpate another horizontal band of connective tissue. If you can, then you have the genetics capable of developing an 8 pack. Now, as I illustrate here, I do not have and cannot develop 8 pack abs. I simply do not have the genetics for them despite my very low levels of body fat. You may find this to be the case as well, but so what? Never let yourself be discouraged by meaningless tests like this since there are so many other things you can do to make whatever abs you do have look amazing. Firstly, you can work to develop your obliques. This will visually give you a tapered and framed out midsection making them instantly look better regardless of whether you have a 4 pack, 6 pack or 8 pack abs. The next thing you can do is make sure you add weighted ab work to your ab routines. As you hypertrophy your abdominal muscles they will stand out more and help to make the cuts become more visibly deep in the process. Finally, you can work on training the transverse abdominis muscle which will help to compress the connective tissue of the rectus which can improve the visibility of the abs anatomy that you do have. The bottom line is, we all have abs and can make them look better by training them the right way and by following a nutrition plan that enables you to keep them year round. Wondering what body fat percentage you have to be at to see six pack abs? Today I show examples of how having a 6, 8, 10 or 12% body fat percentage does not guarantee visible ab definition. 🔥 FREE 6 Week Challenge: https://gravitychallenges.com/home65d4f?utm_source=ytube&utm_term=percentage Fat Loss Calculator: http://bit.ly/2O3rRNy This is a video that I wanted to do for a while because this 12% myth has spread all over the internet and now you have a bunch of people that might have never even been under 12% body fat claiming that you need to get under 12% to see your abs. The YouTube Community especially, seems to be convinced that 12% is the number to be at to see a six pack. I'm here today to tell you that this is completely untrue and it's a total myth. I'm not sure why or when 12% was picked as the definitive number to seeing a six pack, but I do know that associating six pack abs with a certain percentage of body fat is totally flawed. One reason why we can't say that a certain percentage is going to equal abs is because the way that your body distributes its body fat varies dramatically from person to person. One person can store most of their body fat in their thighs and hips while another person can store the majority of their body fat over their abdomen. I've personally trained thousands of people with all different body fat percentages. And a lot of my clients that were actually really lean still could not see their abs. In fact even my business partner dropped his body fat to 8 percent after dieting for 16 weeks and still could not see six pack abs. Meanwhile I've done bulking phases where I was eating an insane amount of calories and I was weighing in at like 230lbs, yet I could still see visible AB definition on top of my stomach that would be full of food. That's because I hold a lot of my fat in my lower body. My fat is mostly Stored in my hips love handles and upper thighs. Meanwhile his fat is predominately stored in his belly so even when he dropped down to 8% he still couldn't see his abs. And I know for a fact that I've had points where ive been well above 14% And still have had great ab definition. Again this all has to do with fat distribution and not with the number that you get from mostly inaccurate body fat devices. So that's actually another thing. Most body fat testing methods are totally flawed. Even the dexa scan which is supposed to be one of the most accurate ways to scan your body fat can be completely off and I've demonstrated this in another video. If you're using calipers, or formulas based on measurements, or bioelectrical impedance forget about it, there's so much room for error, you're going to be at least three to four percent off. Due to inaccurate measurements alone...you can't count on your body fat percentage to tell you when you're going to see those abs. The good news is that as long as you use the same body fat device the change over time should be pretty accurate. So if you're using for example a scale to determine your body fat, the initial reading probably will be inaccurate and so will the final reading but the change over time should be pretty accurate. However again this does not help you identify a definitive body fat percentage that will lead to visible abs. The last thing that this 12% body fat myth completely ignores is that to see your abs you have to build up the muscle...Abs....... are muscles. There's not just a magic six pack sitting under everyone's belly fat. Unfortunately that's not how it works. First of all everyone's abs are shaped differently due to different genetics. So one guy might burn away the belly fat from his abs and find very defined symmetrical six pack looking ab muscles while another guy might burn off the same fat but because his abs are shaped differently they're not going to look as defined and symmetrical. Like I said ABS are muscles. So if you have one guy that has worked his abs very well with Progressive resistance training workouts and you have another guy that does a couple crunches here and there the guy that worked on his abs with weights is going to have a lot more blocky visible abs than the other guy as long as his genetics arent horrible. Which is actually totally a real possibility. There are some people that don't work out at all and have ripped six packs only because of good muscle building genetics and a good distribution of body fat. Now you have to understand that this is the truth because for me as a trainer it does me no good to tell people that ABS aren't as easy to acquire for some as they are for others.

About EMS Systems There have been a ton EMS systems (Electric Muscle Stimulator) ranging from therapy to rehab situations. An electrode is connected to the muscle to give it juice and cause it to contract. Over the years, the systems got in trouble with the FDA: the products didn't stimulate a *hot turd* and were being sold as a weight loss, side reducing wonder product. The Flex Belt got FDA clearance for ab toning, firming, and strengthening. How it works Essentially, you have an adjustable belt, electrodes, replaceable pads, and a battery pack. To get to see your abs, however, you need a healthy diet with cardio to get rid of your layer of fat.It's not a shortcut; it's something to add. Today I am going to show you the one mistake that most guys make when doing ab exercises. So please take the next few minutes to learn about this one thing you must avoid doing which can actually make your stomach bulge out further. Before we dive into the training and exercise, I wanted to talk about two key points in training and sculpting your abs: #1 - NO single ab workout out there will get you abs. You need to first reduce the layer of fat over the abs to get them visible. #2 - There are no “BAD” ab exercises, only performing exercises incorrectly that can make or break the effectiveness of the movement The trick here is to instead of thinking about how many reps you are doing, or what kind of equipment you’re training your abs with, focus on your BREATHING during every repetition and movement - this will ensure your abs and muscles are contracting. To show you how this tip works, I’ll apply it to 3 standard ab exercises: 1:35 - The Ab Plank - Just by changing your breathing and posture, you can make this exercise even that much better to strengthen your core and abs. Start off flat on your stomach. Make fists with each hand and place both hands at a shoulder’s width, right above the shoulders with forearms parallel to one another. Transition to your toes, keeping a straight (plank) posture from the top of your head down to your heels. You’ll notice here if you let your gut hang forward, not engaging your abs or breathing correctly, you'll see that we're not really even using the right muscles so you're not maximizing the movement. By taking a short exhale before you contract your abs, keep a tight core. By doing this you’ll double the time under tension your midsection muscles will endure, helping to speed up the time it takes to get your six pack abs more defined and toned! 3:17 - Lying Bicycle Crunches - With this movement, really focus on slowing down the movement and contracting your abs with each breath. Begin by laying flat on your back, making sure your lower back is touching the ground. Raise your hands up and place your thumbs and index fingers on your temples right on your forehead, elbows at shoulder height and at about a 30 degree angle facing out. Bend your legs at the knee and raise your legs ups at the hips, knees reaching just below the waistline. To begin, slowly bring your right elbow and left knee towards one another, flexing your core and taking a controlled breath out when the elbow and knee meet. Alternate this motion with the left arm and right knee, always remembering to control the movement and taking a breath out when your elbow is approaching your knee. 4:16 - Lying Leg Raises - Keeping tight and controlling your breathing during this movement will engage your core that much more and make the exercise even more efficient! Start by laying flat on your back, making sure the lower back is contacting the ground. Place your arms to your side, palms facing down and touching the floor. Bend your legs slightly at the knee, keeping both legs close if not completely together. Begin the exercise by raising your legs at the hips until your body creates a 90 degree angle, shooting for your heels to face the sky. Throughout the whole movement, focus on a steady rhythm with your breathing and keeping your posture flexed and tight from start to finish - you’ll feel a world of difference after! Did you notice how much tighter and defined my abs looked? Now imagine applying these new rules to EVERY rep and EVERY set, each time you train your abs…It’s a game changer! Now that you’ve gotten a chance to both see the difference in your training, apply these techniques to all your exercises to help better engage and contract your muscles, because you can start using these techniques and feeling it RIGHT NOW! Don’t forget to use the 3 second rule while performing each repetition to know just how long to hold and control a movement. You control the exercise and movement with your breathing, so always make sure to really focus on contracting your muscles at the top of an exercise while taking a breath out and taking a breath in when going to start of the movement.
