By emulating the ingenuity of termites, Zimbabwean architect Mick Pearce used an approach called biomimicry to design a natural cooling system that harnessed nature. Fusuma in Japan Japanology pt1 In Japanese architecture, fusuma (Japanese: 襖) are vertical rectangular panels which can slide from side to side to redefine spaces within a room, or act as doors. They typically measure about 90 centimetres (3.0 ft) wide by 180 centimetres (5.9 ft) tall, the same size as a tatami mat, and are two or three centimeters thick. The heights of fusuma have increased in recent years due to an increase in average height of the Japanese population, and a 190 centimetres (6.2 ft) height is now common. In older constructions, they are as small as 170 cm (5 ft 7 in) high. They consist of a lattice-like wooden understructure covered in cardboard and a layer of paper or cloth on both sides. They typically have a black lacquer border and a round finger catch. Historically, fusuma were painted, often with scenes from nature such as mountains, forests or animals. Today, many feature plain rice paper, or have industrially printed graphics of fans, autumn leaves, cherry blossom, trees, or geometric graphics. Patterns for children featuring popular characters can also be purchased. Both fusuma and shōji (sheer, translucent paper room dividers) run on wooden rails at the top and bottom. The upper rail is called a kamoi (鴨居, lit. "duck's place"), and the lower is called a shikii (敷居). Traditionally these were waxed, but nowadays they usually have a vinyl lubricating strip to ease movement of the fusuma and shōji. Along with the fusuma, shōji and tatami straw mats (as the floor) make up a typical Japanese room. These walls can be installed outside in order to permit or block solar gain as needed, or inside to create mini-rooms . Not only that, but it is possible to get panels that have two different colors on either side of them such that a simple rotation could completely alter the ambience or style of a room. Made from prefabricated construction materials off site, the Mima is both affordable and extraordinarily easy and quick to install. Our friends over at CubeMe point out that the home resembles the Japanese ken, which mixes and matches screens, panels, and mats that are assembled or disassembled with great efficiency throughout Japan. They are filled with daylight, aesthetically pleasing, and suggest none of the discomfort one might associate with a program of this size. We think that owning a Mima would be an excellent way to accomplish our 2012 resolution to live more simply "

Where is the world's most beautiful Starbucks? Japan, of course. In Toyama city's Kansui Park is a shop that has won awards for it's design, but it's also the location that makes it beautiful. Those big windows overlook a lake in a park, the building resting upon grass, surrounded by sakura trees. The fresh air off the sea of Japan and the beautiful sunsets over the nearby Japanese Alps can't be forgotten. I could sip a hot cappuccino all day here. But wait! Starbucks newest shop in Kyoto (Ninenzaka) is a traditional tea house that looks centuries old! It's hard to tell it's a Starbucks until you see the sign. Inside, it's like going back in time. You definitely feel Kyoto's historical vibe sitting on tatami sipping macha tea ... lattes. This may also be the world's most beautiful shop. Hakodate in Hokkaido is home to what many consider to be the "coziest Starbucks in the world". It's got a fireplace, wide open rooms and stairs, natural hard wood floors and a beautiful deck that overlooks Hakodate Bay. It's super cozy! Yeah, visiting Starbucks is certainly one attraction for many visitors because it seems more than just a chain coffee shop. To me, it a reflection of the world around us -- and a really good cup of coffee. THIS IS NOT A SPONSORED VIDEO. I made this episode from a suggestion from a viewer in 2016 :) I also like Starbucks Japan because it's the only cafe chain that is non-smoking and has excellent coffee. When BJ and Danielle Siegel began planning their dream home in the hills of Sonoma County, California, they wanted something light on the land. “Sometimes when people build a house they want to express all the cool things they can get into a house and for us it was kind of the opposite,” explains BJ. “We wanted to do as little as possible and make it a comfortable place to live.” BJ, an architect who’s also head of store design for Apple, didn’t have time to babysit a build, but he was enamored by the customizable prefab design weeHouse. Created by Geoffrey Warner of St. Paul Minnesota’s Alchemy Architects, the ultra minimal design is based on a simple box with two walls of sheer windows so the landscape takes center stage. “I think a lot of people don't necessarily buy into the idea of less is more. I think a lot of people think more is more. And they add features and they add complexity and they add size and it makes them feel like they've actually gotten more and I think it's much more difficult and much harder to actually get there through doing less. That's the fun challenge.” The Siegels also realized that in the pricey San Francisco Bay Area, modular builds that could be nearly finished in a factory, were a lot cheaper and easier to construct than site-built homes. In order to create enough space for themselves and their teenage son Jules, the Siegels opted for two boxes placed at an angle from each other (to create privacy). The larger box houses the kitchen (on one wall), open dining room and a box for Jules’ bedroom (with the bathroom and shower tucked behind it). The other box is BJ and Danielle’s bedroom and bath with again a box unit in the middle that houses their closet and separates the space. “I always feel like really great architecture is like a really great poem. You have to work it work it work it, you reduce it down to the things that only say what they have to say and you get rid of everything else and that's where the sweet spot is for me.” https://www.weehouse.com/ Landscape architect David Hocker: https://www.hockerdesign.com/ https://faircompanies.com/videos/apple-architect-picks-a-small-prefab-to-savor-ca-countryside/

Yasushi Ozeki, Mikiya Kusaki and Yoshiharu Ogawa run a Wood-Mizer LT15WIDE sawmill to produce traditional architecture in Kyoto, Japan. “The trick is to analyze the tendencies of each tree to its maximum utilization. The ability of creating wood joints of elaborate wood framework is obviously important. But the most important job is to control how the wood will behave when it becomes the pillar or the beam. This is very difficult because you must keep instructing the wood that lived much longer than you to keep retaining a certain shape, even after you pass away,” explains Yasushi. The Wood-Mizer LT15 Wide sawmill enables the team to break down wide logs that are then carefully planed to create pillars and beams used to build homes and other traditional structures. What encourages me is Wood-Mizer's LT15 [Wide] and the mountain itself. If I can access the mountain and LT15, then I should probably be able to weather out the storm that lies ahead of me,” says Yoshiharu. Paolo Deganello has regularly collaborated with Experimenta since the publishing house was founded in 1989. His reflections and tireless activity as a feature writer, whose work we have frequently shared with our readers, have contributed to building a critical vision of design, marked by a firm commitment to the crucial issues of our time. "Nowadays, designers have to go against the market, they have to head in an ecologically sustainable direction. They have to be brave enough to bite the hand that feeds them," Paolo Deganello declares decisively. Paolo Deganello was born in Este (Padua) in 1940. After graduating with honours from the Faculty of Architecture in Florence in 1966, he opened the studio Arquitectura Radical Archizoom Associati that same year, along with Andrea Branzi, Gilberto Corretti and Massimo Morozzi. He worked at the studio until it disbanded in 1972. He then began freelancing in Milan, which he still does today, combining his architectural and design projects with teaching positions. Since 2006, he teaches at ESAD in Matosiñho (Oporto) and since 2008 at the Architecture Faculty in Alghero (Italy). Prefab Paco small japanese architecture Meet Paco, an all in one living unit from Japanese Schemata Architecture Office and Jo Nagasaka. It’s a 3m box cube that offers a compact yet sufficient living space despite its tiny size. What a unique and inspiring project for creative tiny home owners! This compact living unit can be placed inside a house, out on a lakeside or on top of a mountain, with the roof opened or closed. Thanks to its smart and unique design, daily necessities can be found hidden in a space below the floor when not in use; a hanging hammock can be connected to the roof; a dining table can be lifted from the floor; a small bathroom includes a toilet below the floor, while a shower can be used around the toilet. Oh, and there’s also a bit of extra space at the bottom for a guest room. I created this video with the YouTube Slideshow Creator (http://www.youtube.com/upload)

Modern style with Japanese influences make the appearance of the house is simple but still beautiful and charming.

The Conversation of the commissioner of Japanese pavilion at 14th architectural biennale,Kayoko Ota, with and A. Giacumacatos. The Japan Pavilion this year is a research-heavy presentation, a "treasure house" of studies, experiments and inspirations excavated from the dusty attic of Japan's modern architectural history. Commissioned by longtime Koolhaas associate Kayoko Ota and curated by Waseda University architectural historian Norihito Nakatani, with support by translator-critic Hiroo Yamagata, architect Keigo Kobayashi, and research associate Jin Motohashi, the focus is on the 1970s. That decade saw the collapse of the techno-utopian modernist ambitions of the 1960s that had culminated in the 1970 Osaka Expo, to be replaced by diverse explorations by individual architects of alternative responses to Japan's modernization. The e-magazine GreekArchitects.gr (GRA) first appeared on the Web on March 2002 aiming at covering an info void regarding architecture in Greece. The goals as well as the general philosophy of its web site follows the honest approach of presenting and commenting on architectural issues on the basis of respect and objective observation. www.greekarchitects.gr

Sponsored by Parsons School of Design School of Constructed Environments (http://www.newschool.edu/parsons/constructed-environments-school-sce/). Natural light sources and their associated phenomena are distinguished by their capacity to incite awe, fear, curiosity, and fascination––emotions that contribute to the sense that we are part of a larger system we may never fully understand. Solar light, which encompasses both sunlight and daylight, offers an opportunity for designers to incorporate the dynamism and variability of natural light into the built environment as a counterpoint to the relative stability of architectural form. This event will expand upon critical issues of place and practice that impact natural light and architecture. This program expands upon issues raised in the upcoming Natural Light issue of Lighting: Illumination in Architecture magazine (UK) edited by Glenn Shrum, Director of Parsons Lighting Design program and principal of Flux Studio. Host: - Glenn Shrum, Director of Parsons' MFA Program in Lighting Design Guests: - Aki Ishida Assistant Professor at Virginia Tech School of Architecture + Design - Davidson Norris from Carpenter Norris Consulting and Star Davis from Arup Program 4:00-6:00pm, Reception 6:00-8:00pm Location: Theresa Lang Community and Student Center, Arnhold Hall, I202 55 West 13th Street, Room I-202, New York, NY 10011 Thursday, October 26, 2017 at 4:00 pm to 8:00 pm

Reese Rowland is as much a storyteller as he is an architect. His strength is offering more, distilling a client's vision and modus operandi into compelling, thought provoking physical narratives. Reese's designs weave a narrative that displays proudly how the craft of architecture can link time and place, space and spirit, man and environment. Reese’s dedication to crafting meaningful spaces through innovative, sustainable architecture has transformed Little Rock. His Heifer International World Headquarters design received the 2008 AIA National Institute Honor Award; one of 13 awarded nationally and was the South's first LEED Platinum building. His Arkansas Studies Institute design and Hillary Rodham Clinton Children’s Library received a National AIA/ALA Award of Excellence, one of five awarded, honoring the best in library architecture worldwide. Arkansas Business named Reese to its list of “25 Entrepreneurs & Innovators of the last 25 years. AY Magazine named Reese to its list of “12 Powerful Men in Arkansas” for having influence, making a difference, and serving others. Arkansas Times named him as one of “50 Influential Arkansans.” He has designed Little Rock’s most recognized buildings, including Acxiom’s and The Bank of the Ozarks Headquarters, Heifer’s Education Center and Little Rock Regional Chamber of Commerce.
