Asia’s Complex Nuclear Geometry | CGSR Seminar

01:18:06
The Center for Global Security Research (CGSR) sponsored this seminar entitled "Asia's Complex Nuclear Geometry" at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory. The seminar was presented by Chris Twomey Sept. 22, 2016. Abstract: Modern scholars of East Asia suggest nuclear weapons give us reasons to be optimistic about peace in the region. This study argues that these views are wrong; nuclear affairs in contemporary East Asia, characterized in important ways by multipolarity and complexity, will have a net destabilizing effect on the region. Rather than mitigate the problems of a rising China and a fluid multipolarity, the second nuclear exacerbate those challenges in Asia. The concept of nuclear and strategic triads helps to structure analysis of these dynamics. Additionally, diversification of strategic systems erode the distinction between nuclear and other weapons creating more slippery slopes of escalatory pathways and tangled red lines that undermine that basis for stability under the stability instability paradox. China plays a central role in this newly challenging strategic environment as Beijing sits at the fulcrum of several triangular security dilemmas in the strategic realm and possesses a diverse set of strategic capabilities. Asia’s strategic future looks grim. Dr. Twomey focuses on Chinese foreign policy and East Asian security. He works with the Departments of Defense and State on a range of strategic and Asian security issues. He authored The Military Lens: Doctrinal Differences and Deterrence Failure in Sino-American Relations (Cornell University Press, 2010), and his work has appeared in journals such as Security Studies, Journal of Contemporary China, The Washington Quarterly, and Asian Survey. Dr. Twomey received his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees from the University of California San Diego and his Ph.D. in Political Science from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

A Conversation with Parag Khanna, Author of The Future is Asian

01:19:19
The Center for Security Studies welcomed Dr. Parag Khanna (SFS'99, SSP'05) for a discussion on his new book The Future is Asian and his path to success as an SFS alumnus. Dr. Khanna is a best-selling author and the founder and managing partner of FutureMap, a data- and scenario-based strategic advisory firm. The discussion was moderated by Dr. Michael Mazarr (COL'87, SSP'89), an adjunct professor with the Security Studies Program and Senior Political Scientist at the RAND Corporation. About the Book The “Asian Century” is even bigger than you think. Far greater than just China, the new Asian system taking shape is a multi-civilizational order spanning Saudi Arabia to Japan, and Russia to Australia—linking five billion people through trade, finance, and infrastructure networks that together represent 40 percent of global GDP. China has taken a lead in building the new Silk Roads across Asia, but it will not lead it alone. Rather, Asia is returning to the stable multipolar order that existed long before European colonialism and American dominance, with India and Southeast Asia coming into their own as economic and strategic hubs. The world has grown accustomed to hearing “America First”—but is it ready for “Asia First”? What happens when Asia no longer just produces for the West but the West produces for Asia? And when Asians don’t aspire to live like the West but rather Western societies wish they had Asians’ stability and far-sighted leadership? Get ready to see the world, and the future, from the Asian point of view. About the Author Parag Khanna is a leading global strategy advisor, world traveler, and best-selling author. He is the founder and managing partner of FutureMap, a data- and scenario-based strategic advisory firm. Parag's newest book is The Future is Asian: Commerce, Conflict & Culture in the 21st Century (2019). He is the author of a trilogy of books on the future of the world order beginning with The Second World: Empires and influence in the New Global order (2008), followed by How to Run the World: Charting a Course to the Next Reinassance (2011), and concluding with Connectography: Mapping the Future of Global Civilization (2016). He is also the author of Technocracy in America: Rise of the Info-State (2017) and co-author of Hybrid Reality: Thriving in the Emerging Human-Technology Civilization (2012). In 2008, Parag was named one of Esquire's "75 Most-Influential People of the 21st Century" and featured in WIRED magazine's "Smart List." He holds a Ph.D. from the London School of Economics, and a Bachelor and Master's degree from the School of Foreign Service at Georgetown University. He has traveled more than 100 countries and is a Young Global Leader in the World Economic Forum.

Harvard Lawsuit: A Referendum On Affirmative Action?

10:50
The lawsuit against Harvard in federal district court for its alleged discrimination in the admissions process is currently underway. Back in 2014, a group of Asian-American applicants sued the school, accusing administrators of setting quotas for the number of Asian students admitted each year. Harvard strongly denies using any such quota, saying that while the school strives for a diverse student body, it does not discriminate against anyone in the process. And while this particular case is being brought on behalf of Asian-American applicants, many are looking to this as a referendum on affirmative action as a whole — with the expectation that whatever the outcome is, this is headed to the Supreme Court. Jim Braude was joined by Gregory Davis, a doctoral student in African American studies at Harvard, who supports the university in the lawsuit; Swan Lee, a director at the Asian American Coalition for Education, who supports the Asian-American applicants suing Harvard; and Jeannie Suk Gersen, a professor at Harvard Law School and a contributing writer at the New Yorker magazine.

Trapped in a rom-com like…😱 Watch the new trailer for #IsntItRomantic, only in theaters February 13! http://www.facebook.com/IsntItRomantic http://twitter.com/IsntItRomantic http://www.instagram.com/isntitromantic http://www.isntitromantic.com From New Line Cinema comes the romantic comedy “Isn’t It Romantic,” starring Rebel Wilson (“How to Be Single,” the “Pitch Perfect” films), Liam Hemsworth (the “Hunger Games” films), Adam Devine (“The Intern,” the “Pitch Perfect” films) and Priyanka Chopra (“Quantico,” “Baywatch”), under the direction of Todd Strauss-Schulson (“A Very Harold & Kumar 3D Christmas,” “The Final Girls”). New York City architect Natalie works hard to get noticed at her job but is more likely to be asked to deliver coffee and bagels than to design the city’s next skyscraper. And if things weren’t bad enough, Natalie, a lifelong cynic when it comes to love, has an encounter with a mugger that renders her unconscious, waking to discover that her life has suddenly become her worst nightmare—a romantic comedy—and she is the leading lady. Wilson stars as Natalie, alongside Liam Hemsworth as Blake, a handsome client; Adam Devine as her earnest best friend, Josh; and Priyanka Chopra as yoga ambassador Isabella. Strauss-Schulson directs from a screenplay by Erin Cardillo and Dana Fox & Katie Silberman. Todd Garner (“Paul Blart: Mall Cop,” “Tag”), Gina Matthews and Grant Scharbo (“13 Going on 30,” “What Women Want”) are producing, with Marty Ewing (“IT,” “The Accountant”) and Rebel Wilson executive producing. Collaborating with Strauss-Schulson behind the scenes are director of photography Simon Duggan (“The Great Gatsby,” “Hacksaw Ridge”), production designer Sharon Seymour (“Argo,” “The Town”), editor Andrew Marcus (“Begin Again,” “Sing Street”), and costume designer Leah Katznelson (“How to Be Single,” “Sleeping with Other People”). New Line Cinema presents, in association with Bron Creative, a Broken Road/Little Engine Production, “Isn’t It Romantic.” Slated for release on February 13, 2019, and will be distributed worldwide by Warner Bros. Pictures, a Warner Bros. Entertainment Company. The film has been rated PG-13.

SPEAKER Jane Chi Hyun Park EVENT NAME Cultural Studies in Asia Informal Seminar Series DATE 12 Sep 2012 [SYNOPSIS] This paper looks at the diasporic movements of the Chinese American Australian protagonist in Mao's Last Dancer, an Australian film based on the memoirs of ballet dancer-turned-stock broker, Li Cunxin, who defected to the US in the 1980s from the People's Republic of China. The movie was a huge success in Australia, leading the domestic box office in 2009 and released the following in the US to mixed reviews. Highlighting the ostensible universality of the American Dream through a rags-to-riches story, the production of the film itself was a transnational affair: directed, produced, adapted, and choreographed by high-profile Australians; shot in China, Australia, and the US; and performed by a multinational, predominantly diasporic cast for an international audience. In my presentation, I examine the cross-cultural translations of Li Cunxin's story by the Australian film crew, by Chinese and Chinese diasporic audiences, and by Li himself. More specifically, I consider two necessarily connected forms of adaptation that I see at work in these translations. The first centers on the literal process through which Li's memoirs were adapted for the big screen where producers placed great emphasis on making the film culturally, emotionally, and aesthetically "authentic" to Li's experience. The second focuses on the connections between this fiction of authenticity and the blatant inauthenticity that characterizes Li's mode of entrepreneurial self-adaptation -- namely his ability to cross-market himself across cultural, national, and generational boundaries by successfully performing the roles expected of him by different groups and audiences. In order to show the continuities between these two modes of adaptation, I juxtapose a close reading of the film and the memoirs within the contexts of their production, circulation, and reception in Australia, China and to some extent, the US. I end by asking how we might interpret this figure within the paradigm of a decolonizing and deimperializing Asia Pacific Studies and how theorizing similar figures and the decontextualized American Dream they activate in popular audiences might reorient Inter-Asia and Asian American Studies. [ABOUT SPEAKER] Dr. Jane Chi Hyun Park is a senior lecturer in the Department of Gender and Cultural Studies and the United States Studies Centre at the University of Sydney. Her research and teaching are concerned with the social uses of media technologies, the cultural impact of minority representations, and transnational flows of popular film, music, and television. Her first book, Yellow Future: Oriental Style in Hollywood Cinema (University of Minnesota, 2010), examines the ideological role of East Asian imagery in Hollywood films. She has also published articles in a number of international journals such as Global Media Journal, World Literature Today, Asian Studies Review, Screening the Past, and Gender, Place and Culture and book chapters in East Main Street: Asian American Popular Culture (NYU Press, 2004), Mixed Race in Film and Television (NYU Press, 2008), Complicated Currents: Media Flows and Soft Power in East Asia (Monash University E-Press, 2009), and The Blackwell Companion to Film Comedy (Blackwell, forthcoming 2012). Jane is currently working on two research projects. The first looks at diasporic and transnational movements in contemporary Asia Pacific film, focusing on aesthetics, performance, and genre. The second looks at the consumption of Korean cosmetic surgeries, products, and regimes through tourism and popular media. Linking both projects is her interest in the ongoing development of Asian modernities through the circulation of cross-cultural styles, objects, and narratives.
