Cunard's cruise liner "Queen Elizabeth" in the port of St. Petersburg, Russia on July 22 and 23, 2017 as part of the 14 night Baltic Highlights Cruise. Peter & Paul Fortress & Neva River Cruise Tour: From 1721 the Peter and Paul Fortress housed part of the city's garrison and served as a high security political jail. Among the inmates was Peter's own rebellious son, Alexei, plus Gorky, Trotsky and Lenin's older brother, Alexander. Views of the impressive Peter and Paul Cathedral, the burial place of all the Russian Emperors and Empresses from Peter the Great to Nicholas II. On top of the Cathedral’s gilded spire stands a magnificent golden angel holding a cross. This weathervane is one of the most prominent symbols of St. Petersburg. From the pier, not far from the Peter and Paul Fortress, cruising along the Neva River, you’ll see some of the city’s famous landmarks, including the former Stock Exchange flanked by two Rostral Columns, the State Hermitage Museum including the Winter Palace, the famous cruiser Aurora, the Bronze Horseman and the St. Isaac Cathedral. Flowing through the city of St. Petersburg, the River Neva is an essential part of its charm, and has played an important part in numerous historical events. The width of the river ranges from an impressive 1,300 to 2,000 feet, however near the Peter and Paul Fortress and the Hermitage it exceeds 2,600 feet wide. In preparation for the Navy Day celebration of July 30, 2017, naval ships are moored in the Neva River.

Russia & China in the Baltic Sea

02:55
July 28, 2017-"Today, during the Russian-Chinese training in the Baltic, which Vladimir Putin talked about, sailors from both countries trained to inspect suspicious vessels and to fire at aerial and naval targets. All this was under close supervision from the NATO colleagues, who observe the maneuvers from a decent distance. But if they're already used to our vessels in this part of the world ocean, the Chinese don't make frequent appearances here and obviously cause additional suspicions. Aleksey Kazannikov reports on the matter."

Liepaja Sea Port.wmv

01:49
Come join Liepāja Tours and "TheCeļotājs" visit to the Liepāja Sea Port "Free port of Liepāja Authority" Port History "Ostas vēsture" Original settlement in the place of modern Liepaja was founded by Curonian fishermen and known by the name Lyva "from the name of river on which Liepaja was located". The oldest written text mentioning the name is dated by the 4th of April, 1253. The Livonian Order under the aegis of the Teutonic Order established the settlement as the town of Libau in 1253. The name Liepaja began to increase in usage after 1560. In 1625 the Duke Friedrich Kettler of Courland granted the town city rights, which were affirmed by King Sigismund III of Poland in 1625. Under Duke Jacob Kettler "Ruled 1640-1681", Liepāja became one of the main ports of Courland as it reached the height of its prosperity. Jacob was an eager proponent of mercantilist ideas. Metalworking and ship building became much more developed and trading relations developed not only with nearby countries, but also with Britain, France, the Netherlands, and Portugal. Liepāja and Courland passed to the control of Imperial Russia in 1795 during the Partitions of Poland. Growth during the nineteenth century was rapid. In the 1870s the rapid development of Russian railways and the 1876 opening of the Liepāja - Romni railway ensured that a large proportion of central Russian trade passed through Liepāja. By 1900, 7% of Russian exports were passing through Liepāja. The city became a major port of the Russian Empire on the Baltic Sea, as well as popular resort. By the orders of Alexander III, Liepaja was fortified against possible seaborne attacks. In the early 20th century on the northern edge of the city a major military base was established, including formidable seaside fortifications and quarters for extensive military personnel. As part of the military development a separate military port was excavated. This area became known as Karosta "War Port" and has served military needs throughout twentieth century. Early in the twentieth century the port of Liepāja became a central point of embarkation for immigrants traveling to the United States. In 1906 a direct service to the United States was used by 40,000 migrants a year. By the year 1913, 1738 ships entered Liepāja with 1,548,119 tones of cargo passing through the Port. The population had increased from 10,000 to over 100,000 in about 60 years. During World War I Liepāja was occupied by the German Army. After the war, when the independent state of Latvia was founded, Liepāja became the capital of Latvia for six months when the interim government of Latvia fled from Riga on a ship "Saratov". World War II devastated the city. The Soviet occupation of Latvia brought great misery with many thousands arrested and deported to Siberia and thousands fleeing to North America, Australia and Western Europe. During the Soviet occupation, Liepāja was a closed city and even nearby farmers and villagers needed a special permit to enter the city. The Soviet military set up its main Baltic naval base and closed it completely to commercial traffic in the late 1960s. One third of the city was occupied by the Soviet Naval Base with 26 thousand military staff. After Latvia regained independence, Liepāja has worked hard to change from a military city into a modern port city marked on European maps. The commercial port was re-opened in 1991. In 1994 the last Soviet Union troops left Liepāja. Since then, Liepāja has engaged in international co-operation, has found more than 10 twin and partner cities and is an active partner in several co-operation networks. Facilities are being improved as the city hosts Latvia's largest naval fleet and is increasingly important to the NATO. Today the Port of Liepāja looks very much like a construction site -- new berths are being built and reconstructed, new infrastructure elements, such as railway and truck access roads are being built.

Sochi Seaport. Sochi, Russia

02:44
Sochi’s sea-gate is 1.5 kilometres away from the railway station. The sea terminal, which is on the official architectural landmarks list, looks like a real palace. The former Marina, now a shopping and amusement centre, was built in the mid-20th century to the design of Karo Alabian and Leonid Karlik. With its majestic colonnade, open terraces, broad stairways and arches, and its 70-metre tower with a steeple, it is quite reminiscent of St. Petersburg’s Admiralty. The central tower is adorned with a sculptural composition: the female statues represent seasons of the year, the male statues stand for the cardinal points, and the dolphins symbolize the opulence of the Black Sea coast. Following a massive rebuilding and the addition of some new buildings on the northern pier, Sochi’s passenger port is now the largest in the Black Sea region. It remains open for supersize ships all year round. Global cruise expos and regattas take place here on a regular basis. There are two noteworthy monuments next to the port. The one in the park across from the rotunda commemorates Peter I, the emperor who expanded Russia so that it gained access to the three seas: Baltic, Azov and Black. He did not, however, build any navy on the Black Sea, like he did on the Baltic Sea. The second monument, standing in the shade of some sycamores by the southern pier, depicts the seeing-off of the main characters of Soviet cult comedy Diamond Arm on their overseas cruise. That scene was actually filmed at the Sochi port. Central District, Ulitsa Voykova, 1 7 (862) 260 96 46, 7 (862) 260 96 03 http://morport-sochi.ru Google maps https://goo.gl/maps/Hfb5uik2NAq

Is Russia Annexing The Azov Sea?

12:25
Tensions are escalating in the Azov Sea as historical territorial claims, botched agreements, and heightened military presence threaten the stability of the region and Ukrainian economic endeavors. The appearance of six Russian vessels – patrol personnel-carriers and draught gunboats – in mid-June, as well as FSB border checkpoints through the Kerch Strait, are signs of increasing aggression and loss of strategic balance in the region. While the situation has not yet escalated into military conflict, experts claim that Russia’s actions mark an attempt to suppress the economic activity of Ukraine’s regional ports and trade. Hromadske explores the crisis first hand, from delayed flights and shipping obstacles to possible Ukrainian responses to Russia’s de-facto blockade of Ukraine’s Azov ports.
