In terms of design, each one of these cases look pretty similar and are installed in the same manner. In terms of weight and bulk, the Otterbox Preserver is the heaviest case of the group. The Fre is the thinnest. In terms of the materials used in each case, the Catalyst is the only one that doesn’t have any rubber around it so it will show wear and tear a little quicker than the other cases.
For the Touch ID membrane, we like the Catalyts as it doesn’t look like it’s sticky or wet. The other ones have to odd, clear plastic that, though it looks pretty flimsy, is quite tough.
The biggest differences between these cases occur in the waterproofing department. One of these cases is extremely waterproof while others are pretty waterproof. However, that one case extremely waterproof case isn’t as drop proof as the others.
In terms of screen protection, the Nuud doesn’t have a screen protector but you can apply third party ones if they’re fitted to the screen. The Fre, Preserver and Catalyst have plastic screen protectors. If you’re concerned about the strength of the screen protectors, you’d be surprised at how tough they are. We’ve taken kitchen knives to them. Check out the video below:
In terms of accessing your iPhone inside the cases, none of these cases have fatal flaws. You can generally get to everything on your iPhone inside the case. In terms of call quality, that goes to the Catalyst. With the other three cases, you sometimes get an echo/popping noise which doesn’t occur on the Catalyst. In terms of the sound coming from the speaker at the bottom of the iPhone, the only case that suffers a bit is the Otterbox Preserver.
Getting to the hardware ports on your iPhone is quite easy but we prefer the setup that LifeProof uses, having an latch for the lightning port and a screw plug for the headphone jack. The Catalyst has a single plastic plug that covers both ports and the Preserver has plastic latches that put a bit too much of pressure on your cables, in our opinion.
The best case for iPhonography is the the LifeProof Nuud because it has the largest cutout for the True Tone flash If you want to know why, check out our video about the True Tone flash. Links are in the description section.
For the screen sensitivty, the Nuud wins only because there isn’t a screen protector. The easiest cases to access your iPhones touchscreen are the Catalyst and Fre as the screen protector covers the whole phone whereas the Nuud and Preserver have plastic lips that might get in the way.
With the Fre and Catalyst, you might be able to feel the gap between the screen protector and for us, one of the most annoying things about iPhone cases is the rain bowing effect which is a common problem that plagues the LifeProof Fre. Not a bit fan of the rain-bowing effect.
In terms of price, the cheapest case here is the Catalyst Waterproof iPHone case at 65 dollars. The Fre sits at 80 and the Preserver and Nuud are close to 90. The price of the Catalyst is what makes it an attractive option.
For the person looking for everyday protection, far away from a lake or ocean, I’d go with the LifeProof Fre or Catalyst. The Preserver is a bit bulky and the latches aren’t the greatest thing to use daily.
If you’re looking for everyday protection and aren’t too paranoid about your iPHone screen, definatley go with the Nuud.
For watersports, I’d go with the Catalyst with it’s 16.4 ft waterproofing followed by the LifeProof Fre/or otter box preserver. I wouldn’t go with the Nuud because there’s an extra o-ring that needs to be cleaned.
If you’re looking to be different, then the Catalyst is the case to get as it will separate you from the common Otterbox and LifeProof cases. The same goes for people who like wearing tight jeans.
