Too many people in this world think that branding begins with choosing a brand name and ends with hiring a designer to slap a few colors on any old generic logo and that's it. Now, if you're one of those people just give me a few minutes, okay? Let's fix that perception. Some people think that building a brand is a task strictly left for graphic designers. No, nuh-uh, wrong. The truth is branding is from marketers and business owners. Branding takes place at every touchpoint, every interaction with the consumer, and every time they think of your brand. Most importantly, branding is ultimately controlled by the customers. Too many companies think that they get to choose their brand while you only really get to influence how your customer sees you, not the other way around. So to help, we've put together a quick look at some of the key elements that go into building a strong brand identity. First up, being responsive and consistent. Don't just build things because they make you happy. You take an action, you see how the customer responds, take on more of the feedback, and then you implement that into your brand strategy going forward. By monitoring your audience responses as you go, you can see what does or doesn't work while consistently engaging with them. And of course, there's no need to alter every fiber of your company's being with every piece of feedback but keep an eye out and take things in. Next up, authenticity. Now, it should really mean something to say that a brand is authentic. But what does that mean? Truly authentic brands understand themselves at the deepest level. And they're able to foster meaningful and long lasting relationships with customers. And not only are customers more likely to trust an authentic brand, they're more likely to recommend it, which is key. Third, creating a brand strategy. A brand is never truly done. Over time they change, they evolve, they develop. I mean, you can see that in logos alone. Branding is a daily process of bringing multiple aspects of your business and voice together and then adjusting them to what the customer expects from you. Next up, brand story. Now this relates back to credibility. How did you as a company come to be? And what makes you so passionate about solving this particular problem? The term storytelling is used a lot but this isn't just about telling a good story. It's about telling people what your company stands for and getting them to stand behind the ideals of your business. Then we have brand essence. Now this is when we get to your company's core values. What principles will shape your company's culture? Now, many companies out there will claim to differentiate themselves with values like, we're transparent. We have have a great company culture, there's no company out there like us. Okay, okay, well done, fine. These unique core values that so many companies profess kind of become the standard for tech start-ups. Which is good, it just means that we can all stop stating the obvious and look for really unique, new, fantastic ways to differentiate ourselves. It's time to show instead of tell. Think of what truly unique values you have and build them into your company culture from day one. And finally, brand differentiation. Copying the same strategy as another company is the tactic reserved by those most dastardly of villains who just aren't creative enough to come up with their own ideas. Don't be a copycat. Originality is way more fun. This all comes back to defining your unique selling point, your USP. What does your brand have that others don't? And how can you position your company in a way that it can't be replicated? Using Content Marketing to Build Your Brand Identity
Today, we're going to talk about three ways you can use content marketing to build your brand identity. Now, you might be one of those B2B marketers who is in the 1% who are weirdly drawn to and love reading white papers or data sheets. Unfortunately, I feel that in B2B, content marketing has become a very silo-ed department that's not creative, it's not fun, and it's not aligned with your brand. It's simply, "you have to have sales assets like white papers, data sheets, and case studies to support your team on the sales side and any of your drip campaigns. On the marketing side, you do blogs and occasionally, a guide." That was my life. That's what we did here for a very long time. I didn't like it. It was boring. I wasn't excited about it. It was hard to be consistent because, as with most content marketing, you have to do it long enough to get somewhere, and during that process, you're nowhere, and you eventually give up before you ever got somewhere. It's hard to tell if blogging didn't work or you just gave up too early, and it becomes a confusing, complicated practice. So, today, we're going to talk about three ways that you can use to simplify the process -- things you can try and a few things to avoid as well. Avoid Doing This... Designing brand identity
SHORT: More videos to come! LONG: Apologies for the lack of consistent video uploads on this channel. It's actually quite time-consuming to make a quality recordings, quality editing, quality encoding and quality publishing. The recording time might only be a few minutes, but it takes at least 5 minutes to set up the camera + mic, an average probably 15 minutes to import and colour-correct everything, 20 minutes to encode, and usually 1hr20minutes to upload to youtube. So for a 5 minute video, it is at least two hours of computer time. On top of that, it's also not cheap. Camera, lenses, mic, webcam, fast computer, and I'm finding out the hard way that making movies takes up lots and lots of HDD space!! I'm also trying to upload everything in at least 2k resolution from now on... Nevertheless, it's something I enjoy, so I will try my hardest to upload a minimum of 1 to 3 video reviews per week from now until at least the end of 2017. I'll aim for Monday/Wednesday/Friday and see how that goes. Expect a lot more book reviews (design, typography and illustration), some reviews of art materials, and even a few tech-reviews of the equipment that I regularly use. I have placed the intro at the end because I think it's too long to see every time. A lot of work went into that, so "it has to be shown". I know I tend to jump straight into it, so I will try to introduce myself with "Hey this is Les" (or something like that) from now on. It's not easy as I have always been quite introverted. Vornado Logo Design, Brand Identity and Brand Packaging
We developed Vornado's Brand Promise, a new strategic brand identity and retail packaging identity that changed Vornado's future. The solution came in radical simplicity and a revolutionary anti-branding information architecture. We even re-named all of Vornado's products the same name for each product category and developed a new universal tagline for each product category. Crazy simple. Insanely simple. All the air circulator products are now called 'Whole Room Air Circulator" which is the brands "unique relevant benefit". This also allowed us to position Vornado as the original--leaving the competition to imitator status. Plus, we made the package design communication ultra clear by fully explaining what an air circulator is and what it means relative to a fan with the tagline, The tagline reads, "The fan that circulates all the air." Now Vornado's brand and brand packaging is differentiated from competitors and clearly positions Vornado as the definitive category leader and innovator. It's so simple and so clear it dominates the retail shelf. Until this new brand packaging Vornado failed for years to gain space on Target's lucrative retail shelves. With this new packaging, they not only got on the shelves but, according to Mark Zarich Director of Sales at Vornado the buyer actually said, "The packaging was the best in category." The brand packaging is selling so well Vornado has doubled their SKU's. The package is built as a sequential graphic design structure with each panel leading to the other building one concept on the previous. The graphic blue strip on the front right edge with the cut out arrow encourages turning the package to the blue panel which explains how Vornado circulates all the air. The graphic green strip with the cut out arrow on the blue panel encourages turning the package to the green panel which explains how whole room air circulation saves energy and money and makes a room more comfortable. The graphic black strip with the cut out arrow on the green panel encourages turning the package to the black panel which list benefits. The front panel states and explains Vornado's "unique relevant benefit" while all the other panels support that assertion. It was all developed out of the 'Brand Promise" and that's what we mean when we say strategic graphic design. What we developed with and for Vornado was, "Intelligent. Superior engineering. Innovation". From this we created the new brand packaging identity which Target said was the best packaging in the category and it got Vornado on Target shelves for the first time in their long history. Relatively the same products just different brand strategy and packaging. We didn't just say they were "Intelligent. Superior engineering. Innovation" but we designed an intelligent and innovative package and branding that showed superior engineering. The contextual approach, brand strategy, logo and graphic design embody the brand promise.
