The Caspian: Sea or Lake?

06:11
There's some confusion around the Caspian Sea, namely, is it actually a sea? Don't we usually call fully enclosed bodies of water, lakes? Hopefully this clears things up a little. Music provided by StoneOcean: https://soundcloud.com/stone_ocean

Why Countries Are Landlocked + Canals

06:30
Why are some countries landlocked? In the case of Bolivia its because they lost a war with Chile. Ethiopia and Serbia granted independence to the parts of their countries that had a coast. Some countries like uzbekistan, are so far inland that they are doubly landlocked, which means they are both landlocked and completely surrounded by other landlocked countries. When a country is landlocked it can be difficult for them to trade, and they often have to rely on their neighbours. In Europe, the danube river lets many landlocked countries have some access to the black sea. As well, many canals exist which lets small ships travel deep inland, providing some of the benefits of having a coast. Some countries may look landlocked, but when viewed closely you can see they have tiny coasts. You can watch this video I made which explores the weird borders in those situations: https://youtu.be/elybAzSVSHc

Gibraltar Breach.mov

04:23
Six million years ago, the Mediterranean Sea nearly dried up during what is called the "Messinian Salinity Crisis". This movie shows a physics-based computer simulation of the breach of Gibraltar and the flood of the basin. A similar event 10,000 years ago, in the then populated Black Sea basin, may have been the source of the Noah's Arc narrative. Caspian Sea

02:06
The Caspian Sea is the largest enclosed inland body of water on Earth by area, variously classed as the world's largest lake or a full-fledged sea. It is in an endorheic basin (it has no outflows) located between Europe and Asia. It is bounded to the northeast by Kazakhstan, to the northwest by Russia, to the west by Azerbaijan, to the south by Iran, and to the southeast by Turkmenistan. The Caspian Sea lies to the east of the Caucasus Mountains and to the west of the vast steppe of Central Asia. Its northern part, the Caspian Depression, is one of the lowest points on Earth. The ancient inhabitants of its coast perceived the Caspian Sea as an ocean, probably because of its saltiness and large size. The sea has a surface area of 371,000 km2 (143,200 sq mi) (not including its detached lagoon of Garabogazköl Aylagy) and a volume of 78,200 km3 (18,800 cu mi). It has a salinity of approximately 1.2% (12 g/l), about a third of the salinity of most seawater.

The Beautiful Caspian Sea, 里海, Каспийское море, Xəzər dənizi, Det kaspiske hav

01:14
The Beautiful Caspian Sea he Caspian Sea is the largest inland body of water in the world and accounts for 40 to 44% of the total lacustrine waters of the world.[15] The coastlines of the Caspian are shared by Azerbaijan, Iran, Kazakhstan, Russia, and Turkmenistan. The Caspian is divided into three distinct physical regions: the Northern, Middle, and Southern Caspian.[16] The Northern–Middle boundary is the Mangyshlak Threshold, which runs through Chechen Island and Cape Tiub-Karagan. The Middle–Southern boundary is the Apsheron Threshold, a sill of tectonic origin between the Eurasian continent and an oceanic remnant,[17] that runs through Zhiloi Island and Cape Kuuli.[18] The Garabogazköl Bay is the saline eastern inlet of the Caspian, which is part of Turkmenistan and at times has been a lake in its own right due to the isthmus that cuts it off from the Caspian. Differences between the three regions are dramatic. The Northern Caspian only includes the Caspian shelf,[19] and is very shallow; it accounts for less than 1% of the total water volume with an average depth of only 5–6 metres (16–20 ft). The sea noticeably drops off towards the Middle Caspian, where the average depth is 190 metres (620 ft).[18] The Southern Caspian is the deepest, with oceanic depths of over 1,000 metres (3,300 ft), greatly exceeding the depth of other regional seas, such as the Persian Gulf. The Middle and Southern Caspian account for 33% and 66% of the total water volume, respectively.[16] The northern portion of the Caspian Sea typically freezes in the winter, and in the coldest winters ice forms in the south as well.[20] Over 130 rivers provide inflow to the Caspian, with the Volga River being the largest. A second affluent, the Ural River, flows in from the north, and the Kura River flows into the sea from the west. In the past, the Amu Darya (Oxus) of Central Asia in the east often changed course to empty into the Caspian through a now-desiccated riverbed called the Uzboy River, as did the Syr Darya farther north. The Caspian also has several small islands; they are primarily located in the north and have a collective land area of roughly 2,000 km2 (770 sq mi). Adjacent to the North Caspian is the Caspian Depression, a low-lying region 27 metres (89 ft) below sea level. The Central Asian steppes stretch across the northeast coast, while the Caucasus mountains hug the western shore. The biomes to both the north and east are characterized by cold, continental deserts. It is in an endorheic basin (it has no outflows) and is bounded to the northwest by Russia, to the west by Azerbaijan, to the south by Iran, to the southeast by Turkmenistan, and to the northeast by Kazakhstan. The ancient inhabitants of its coast perceived the Caspian Sea as an ocean, probably because of its saltiness and seeming boundlessness. It has a salinity of approximately 1.2%, about a third the salinity of most seawater. The Caspian Sea, like the Aral Sea and Black Sea, is a remnant of the ancient Paratethys Sea. It became landlocked about 5.5 million years ago due to tectonic uplift and a fall in sea level. During warm and dry climatic periods, the landlocked sea has all but dried up, depositing evaporitic sediments like halite that have become covered by wind-blown deposits and were sealed off as an evaporite sink when cool, wet climates refilled the basin. Due to the current inflow of fresh water, the Caspian Sea is a freshwater lake in its northern portions. It is more saline on the Iranian shore, where the catchment basin contributes little flow. Currently, the mean salinity of the Caspian is one third that of the Earth's oceans. The Garabogazköl embayment, which dried up when water flow from the main body of the Caspian was blocked in the 1980s but has since been restored, routinely exceeds oceanic salinity by a factor of 10. The Caspian Sea is the largest inland body of water in the world and accounts for 40 to 44% of the total lacustrine waters of the world. The coastlines of the Caspian are shared by Azerbaijan, Iran, Kazakhstan, Russia, and Turkmenistan. The Caspian is divided into three distinct physical regions: the Northern, Middle, and Southern Caspian. The Central Asian steppes stretch across the northeast coast, while the Caucasus mountains hug the Western shore. The biomes to both the north and east are characterized by cold, continental deserts. Conversely, the climate to the southwest and south are generally warm with uneven elevation due to a mix of highlands and mountain ranges; the drastic changes in climate alongside the Caspian have led to a great deal of biodiversity in the region. The Caspian Sea has numerous islands throughout, all of them near the coasts. There are none in the deeper parts of the Sea. Ogurja Ada is the largest island. The island is 37 km (23 mi) long, with gazelles roaming freely on it. In the North Caspian, the majority of the islands are small and uninhabited, like the Tyuleniy Archipelago, an Important Bird Area (IBA), although some of them have human settlements.

Historically part of the East Indies and contemporary known as the Malay Archipelago, the area has some of the world’s highest levels of biodiversity for marine ecosystems. Here, coral, fish and molluscs thrive. Yet, perhaps the prevailing characteristic is the maritime-based cultures that are represented by the nations of the Philippines, Indonesia, Malaysia, Brunei and Singapore. All of this makes for a unique archipelagic neighbourhood with its own distinct geopolitical needs. Scientists May Have Identified Why The Caspian Sea Is Shrinking

00:42
A team of researchers from universities around the world have joined together to determine why the Caspian Sea is shrinking. In the study published last month in the journal Geophysical Research Letters, the team says, "With continued warming in the northern hemisphere, one can expect yearly accumulated evaporation rates over the Caspian Sea to continue increasing for the foreseeable future." Evaporation is closely related to rising temperatures, a trend expected to continue with climate change. The Caspian Sea and its resources are of much interest to the surrounding countries, and while scientists can't be certain, the future of the sea appears to be at risk. http://gizmodo.com/scientists-think-they-know-why-the-caspian-sea-is-shrin-1798538633 http://www.wochit.com This video was produced by YT Wochit News using http://wochit.com

The Caspian Sea in ancient times divided into two parts the land isthmus. Over this isthmus, the ancient caravans of camels with goods moved from China to Europe and the Middle East. This road was the shortest route of the ancient Silk Road and it connected Asia and Europe. This episode is the story of the Soviet Wing-in-Ground-Effect Systems (air cushion vessels). See the story of creation and service of SM-1, SM-2, Be-1, VVА-14, Skat, Kаlmar, Омаr, Jayran, Zubr, KM, SM-5, SM-8, SM-6, Оrlyonok, Lun, Volga-2, Strizh, Ivolga, Aquaglide-5. ...Mankind created a lot of machines.… An airplane having mastered the laws of the air stopped being a miracle. Way before that ships tamed the oceans. But restless minds keep on creating new machines. And there you are – a vessel that can take off from water not really leaving it. What is it? A sailing aircraft, or a flying vessel? What kind of a technical wonder is that, existing at the edge of two environments? ----------------- Modelgrad.com offers the unique selection of plastic model kits, decals and accessories from ex-USSR. 7 Continents of the World - Geography for Kids | Educational Videos by Mocomi

03:36
7 Continents of the world and more geography facts. Continents are very large landmasses found on Earth. The Earth has seven such continents. They are (from largest in size to the smallest): Asia, Africa, North America, South America, Antarctica, Europe and Australia. Asia - Asia is the world’s largest and most populous continent on Earth. It covers 30% of the Earth’s land area. Asia hosts about 60% of the world’s current human population. Africa - Africa is the second-largest and also the second most populated continent in the world, after Asia. The continent of Africa covers 20.4% of the world’s total land area. Africa has a population of 1 billion which accounts for about 14.72% of the world’s human population. North America - North America is the third largest continent. It occupies 16.5% of the planet’s land area. In 2008, its population was estimated at nearly 529 million people. It is the fourth most populous continent after Asia, Africa and Europe. South America - South America is the fourth largest continent in terms of area. It is also the fifth most populous continent after Asia, Africa, Europe and North America. South America is bordered on the west by the Pacific Ocean and to the north and east by the Atlantic Ocean. Antarctica - Antarctica is the fifth largest continent in area. About 98% of Antarctica is covered by ice that averages about 1.6 kilometers in thickness. It is the coldest, driest and windiest continent. Antarctica is considered a desert, with only 8 inches of rainfall in a year. There are no permanent residents on this island, but only a few thousands of people, who live here at the research stations found across the continent. Europe - Europe by convention, is one of the world’s seven continents divided from Asia by the Ural mountains stretching right up to the Caspian Sea. It is the world’s second-smallest continent by surface area. It covers about 6.8% of the Earth’s surface area. It is bordered by the Arctic Ocean to the north, the Atlantic Ocean to the west, the Mediterranean Sea to the south, and the Black Sea to the south east. Australia - Australia is the smallest and lowest-lying human-inhabited continent on Earth. As Australia is mostly on a single landmass, it is also referred to as an “island” continent, surrounded by oceans. The continent of Australia also includes nearby islands Tasmania, New Guinea, the Aru Islands, and the Raja Ampat Islands, geologically. Reformed English: Geographical Terms

03:38
This video covers a unique aspect of Reformed English. In most languages, there is some word for "continent" or how we call the Caspian Sea a lake, even though the name doesn't make sense. However, Reformed English has its own geographical terms. Please comment if you have any questions or arguments!

Geopolitics of Nigeria

13:48
Support CaspianReport through Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/CaspianReport Nigeria is located in western Africa on the Gulf of Guinea. The country’s size is comparable to that of Venezuela, or twice the size of the US state of California. But unlike either of these comparisons, Nigeria’s population level is many times higher. With about 178 million people, Nigeria is the most populous country in Africa and the seventh most populous in the world. However, not all Nigerians speak the same language or share the same ethnicity. An important thing to understand about Nigeria is that it is a multicultural state. There are about 400 different ethnic groups from a number of distinct cultural groups, with the largest being the Hausa, Igbo, Yoruba and the Fulani ethnic groups. Nigerian politics has traditionally been managed by these four. Considering its large population, economy and industrial output, the country is frequently referred to as the ‘Giant of Africa’. Nigeria’s external power project is evident in its economic influence throughout the continent, as Nigerian businessmen are active all over the region. This refers to legal businesses as well as to black market sectors like arms trade, drug trade, human trafficking, business scams, etc. Furthermore, the government in Abuja uses a number of pan-African organizations to bolster its international image as a reliable state and the gateway to Africa. Yet, despite the country’s economic and demographic influence, Nigeria’s foreign policy is significantly restricted due to the country’s domestic politics. In this analysis we will look at the geopolitics of Nigeria, what shapes its domestic politics and what can we expect for the future of Nigeria.
