Oracle Cost Based Optimizer Basics

02:12:35
When it comes to writing efficient queries there are a few key concepts that need to be understood. One of them is the Oracle Cost-Based Optimizer (CBO). Although it's called a cost-based optimizer it's actually not the cost we need to focus on primarily to understand why the optimizer makes certain decisions. In this webinar, you will learn the basics of the CBO, see why it is crucial that the optimizer's picture of the data fits reality, why cardinality and selectivity estimates matter so muc

Oracle Cost Based Optimizer Advanced Session

01:40:21
Presented by Randolf Geist 01 August 2012 Summary Building on the previous Cost-Based Optimizer Basics webinar, in this almost "zero-slide" session we'll explore different aspects of the Cost-Based Optimizer that haven't been covered or only mentioned briefly in the 'basics' session. This is a continuous live demonstration including topics like: Clustering Factor, Histograms, Dynamic Sampling, Virtual Columns, Daft Data Types and more. If you've ever asked yourself why a histogram can be a threat to database performance and why storing data using the correct data type matters regarding Execution Plans then this session is for you. It is recommended, although not required, to watch the recording of the 'basics' webinar first. A live Q+A session with Randolf Geist will follow the presentation. Cost Based Optimizer in Apache Spark 2 2 - Ron Hu & Sameer Agarwal

35:20
Apache Spark 2.2 ships with a state-of-art cost-based optimization framework that collects and leverages a variety of per-column data statistics (e.g., cardinality, number of distinct values, NULL values, max/min, avg/max length, etc.) to improve the quality of query execution plans. Leveraging these reliable statistics helps Spark to make better decisions in picking the most optimal query plan. Examples of these optimizations include selecting the correct build side in a hash-join, choosing the right join type (broadcast hash-join vs. shuffled hash-join) or adjusting a multi-way join order, among others. In this talk, we'll take a deep dive into Spark's cost based optimizer and discuss how we collect/store these statistics, the query optimizations it enables, and its performance impact on TPC-DS benchmark queries. Oracle SQL Tuning - How to Read Execution Plans (Explain Plan)

13:39
In this free tutorial you will learn how to generate and read (interpret) an execution plan in Oracle Databases. See more FREE Oracle Tuning tutorials at http://skillbuilders.com/free-oracle-tutorials. Understanding what the Oracle Database does with your SQL is essential to tuning - and the execution plan is the key. Oracle Certified Master DBA John Watson will provide a brief introduction (4 minutes) - which includes John's tuning methodology, then demonstrate EXPLAIN PLAN, SQL*Plus AUTOTRACE and DBMS_XPLAN.DISPLAY_CURSOR. In the tutorial, John will teach you: - How to read an execution plan - Find the 1st step in the plan - Decipher the order of the steps in the plan - That EXPLAIN PLAN can be very misleading Prerequisites: To get the most from this tutorial, you should: 1 Know how to code SQL 2 Be familiar with SQL*Plus 3 Know - in very general terms - what an execution plan is. 4 Have a basic understanding of the Library Cache (this is where Oracle Database stores parsed SQL statements) 5 Have a basic understanding of the Cost Based Optimizer (this is the part of the database that parses your SQL, creates an execution plan. Hopefully the correct - most efficient - plan).

Oracle GTM Landed Cost Simulator by Anand Vasudevan (Infosys)

23:11
Presentation by Anand Vasudevan during the OTM Conference in Singapore on 1 December 2016. During the current phase of globalization most countries of the world are encouraging trade between themselves in order to grow and flourish. Most economies are cutting down on various tariff and non-tariff barriers and are making themselves available for import and export to the rest of the world. The cut throat competition, specially, in the manufacturing industry has been creating immense pressure on enterprises to optimize their operational costs. Companies, in order to remain competitive and profitable, often outsourcing to cheap labor destinations. However, when all enterprises at some point of time consider 'outsourcing' as an option what is it that sets one of these organizations apart? The answer is 'Strategic import of supplies'. Regardless of which part of the world you are located, the current global business landscape offers you a number of importing options to choose from. Which option suits you the best depends upon a number of factors like - cost of import, time elapsed in importing, shipping term applied (Incoterm) and few other factors like mode of transport, documentation etc. It is often difficult to draw a comparison taking into account of all of these factors - firstly since there is no single source of truth secondly there is no standard mechanism that can do that. It often compels enterprises to take a decision based on their past business experience or based on a rough estimate of a few of the above factors mostly cost and time. Oracle GTM, with its latest release has introduced a new feature called "Landed Cost Simulator". It gives an unparalleled visibility on the advantages and disadvantages related to the various import options that an enterprise has, including cost, time, shipping terms, contract-conditions etc. It also lets you know if a particular import scenario will make you eligible for any 'Tariff Preferences' under a trade agreement. Through this paper we have tried to discuss how this new feature can help growing enterprises and why is it a 'must have' for enterprises who wants to maximize their profits and minimize the risk associated with International Trade.

Contract Management 101 - Purchasing and Project Procurement, fixed-price, cost based, and T&M

10:19
Purchasing and Project contract management and the 3 main contract types: fixed price, time and materials, and cost based contracts. This is an important knowledge in Project Procurement, Supply Chain, and Purchasing Management. In this video, you learn: Why and when do companies need contracts in purchasing management? What are the main contract types used by companies? What are the ADVANTAGES and risks of each contract type? Would you like to understand contract management in corporations? If yes, keep watching. Fixed price is a contract in which the price of the product or service is fixed during the contract duration. In these contracts, buyer and seller should know very well the specifications and, therefore, the costs can be estimated with accuracy. In a cost-based contract, the buyer agrees to reimburse the supplier for the expenses incurred plus a dollar amount of profit, usually a percentage of the contract’s full price. To protect against cost overruns, some companies define the maximum cost reimbursement the supplier cannot exceed. In Time & Materials (T&M) contract, cost unit rates are predetermined, but the man-hours and material quantity u can vary. Therefore, the total cost is not fixed while unit cost are fixed. It is a kind of hybrid contract. It has a fixed unit cost as the fixed price contracts, but the amount of material used and worked hours o may vary and will be paid accordingly. Cost Based Optimizer Framework for Spark SQL: Spark Summit East talk by Ron Hu/Zhenhua Wang

31:42
In Spark SQL’s Catalyst optimizer, many rule based optimization techniques have been implemented, but the optimizer itself can still be improved. For example, without detailed column statistics information on data distribution, it is difficult to accurately estimate the filter factor, cardinality, and thus output size of a database operator. With the inaccurate and/or misleading statistics, it often leads the optimizer to choose suboptimal query execution plans. We added a Cost-Based Optimizer framework to Spark SQL engine. In our framework, we use Analyze Table SQL statement to collect the detailed column statistics and save them into Spark’s catalog. For the relevant columns, we collect number of distinct values, number of NULL values, maximum/minimum value, average/maximal column length, etc. Also, we save the data distribution of columns in either equal-width or equal-height histograms in order to deal with data skew effectively. Furthermore, with the number of distinct values and number of records of a table, we can determine how unique a column is although Spark SQL does not support primary key. This helps determine, for example, the output size of join operation and multi-column group-by operation. In our framework, we compute the cardinality and output size of each database operator. With reliable statistics and derived cardinalities, we are able to make good decisions in these areas: selecting the correct build side of a hash-join operation, choosing the right join type (broadcast hash-join versus shuffled hash-join), adjusting multi-way join order, etc. In this talk, we will show Spark SQL’s new Cost-Based Optimizer framework and its performance impact on TPC-DS benchmark queries.

Oracle SQL Tutorial 1 - Intro to Oracle Database

10:18
As illustrated in the video, Oracle Database is a program designed to hold lots of information, or data. There are all kinds of different databases and they all have their uses. Some of the most common ones are MySQL, SQL Server, Sybase, and MongoDB. All of these have different uses. The differences will be easier to understand after you learn more about each kind of database. We did not discuss it much in the video, but if you are wondering what “SQL” means in the title, it stands for structured query language. Structured query language is a human readable computer language that is used to tell databases to do things. We will discuss SQL and Oracle SQL Developer more in future videos. Databases are better than spreadsheets because they allow multiple users at one time, different levels of access given to users, recovery options and transactions, and it is more protected from hacking and malicious destruction. Programming languages often have very useful functions or methods that can be used to communicate to a database and therefore they are a naturally good option for the back end of programs. This course will go over all of the major parts of database programming using Oracle SQL. We will be using Oracle 11g, but these videos should still work with other versions, including the most recent 12c. Q and A ~~~~~~ How much does Oracle cost? The full enterprise edition costs thousands. They have other versions for less and they even have a FREE VERSION! This is known as the XE version (eXpress Edition). That is the one we will be using. How long does it take to learn SQL? You can learn all of the basics and be an efficient beginner database developer in only about a month of practice. To become an intermediate it can take anywhere from an additional 3 - 6 months with a only a few hours of studying and practicing each day. How can I learn SQL faster? Take notes and actually mess around with making your own database. Watch these videos until you understand the concepts within them, read articles and books that teach in more depth. Calculating Safety Stock: Protecting Against Stock Outs

06:17
The following video explains how to calculate safety stock in order to avoid the high costs of inventory shortages and stock-outs. The video explains inventory replenishment times, daily consumption, safety stock thresholds and levels, and your company’s own time to market in terms of delivery. A graph is provided that clearly shows what the reorder point should be and what the safety stock levels should be. A working example is provided where a company tracks a number of inventory replenishment times, their own daily consumption levels, the safety stock amount they need to cover during these consumption periods and then finally, your company’s delivery times for finished goods to your customer base. http://www.driveyoursuccess.com Video provides four steps to calculate safety stock Additional Sources: http://www.driveyoursuccess.com/2011/08/determining-safety-stock-its-impact-on-inventory-holding-costs.html This article outlines four steps to safety stock management
