Livre / Book TRUE CRIME - DETECTIVE MAGAZINES (Taschen)

La Petroleuse bookstore (http://www.la-petroleuse.com) presents TRUE CRIME (http://www.la-petroleuse.com/poster-art/2466-true-crime-detective-magazines-978382282559.html) At the height of the Jazz Age, when Prohibition was turning ordinary citizens into criminals and ordinary criminals into celebrities, America’s true crime detective magazines were born. True Detective came first in 1924, and by 1934, when the Great Depression had produced colorful outlaws like Machine Gun Kelly, Bonnie and Clyde, Baby Face Nelson, and John Dillinger, the magazines were so popular cops and robbers alike vied to see themselves on the pages.

Check out our new website for more incredible documentaries: HD and ad-free. https://goo.gl/LwMcmY Mr Chohan had a successful business worth £5m. Kenneth Regan was known as Captain Cash from his drug dealing days, and along with his two henchmen, they hatched a plot to take over the Chohan’s business and use it to front their drug smuggling ring. Mr Chohan, his young wife, her mother, and the couple’s their two baby sons were lured into a trap and brutally murdered, covered up as an innocent but tragic sudden disappearance. The plot was only foiled by a family murder in New Zealand, refusing to believe that they would all vanish, as a result of tax avoidance or a business agreement gone sour. The bodies of the three adults washed up along the coasts of the UK, but the two babies were never found. This documentary, made for Channel 4 strand ‘Dispatches’ explores the heinous crimes and the investigation. Want to watch more full-length Documentaries? Detective Magazines 1970's: Front Page Detective April 1979

02:52
Decades ago, ( beginning with True Detective in 1924 ) and before the advent of flashy, quick cut, and consequently head-ache inspiring MTV video style crime dramas like CSI, murder mystery fans had to use their cognitive skills to discover crime stories. In the 70's there were some entertaining cop shows like Police Story, The Rookies, Kojak, and others, but they didn't quite compensate for a real life detective story. The detective magazines generally advocated a pro-death penalty, get tough on crime stance, and abounded with often lurid European or local crimes of passion, murder conspiracies, serial killers, heist jobs, and so on. By the mid-80's these magazines were in a period of steady decline, with fewer pages, too many ads, covers with 80's big hair chicks toting AK-47's, fewer photographs, and way too much filler. Once True Detective ended circulation in 1995, the era of the true crime magazine in the USA was largely over. Taking its place were even more sensational, often semi-fictionalized, somewhat overdone, true crime paperbacks. The British have since revived True Detective overseas, with the newest covers looking a little like that of the National Inquirer.

The Real 'True Detective'?

20:49
Ten years ago, the town of Ponchatoula, Louisiana, was traumatized when a local church's secret Satan worship, ritualized child molestation, and animal sacrifices came to light. Rust Cohle may be a fictional character, and time may not really be a flat circle, but that sounds an awful lot like the events of the first season of HBO's hit True Detective. In this episode of our brand-new series The Real, we went down to Ponchatoula to meet Stuart Murphy and Tom Tedder, two law enforcement officials who helped put these terrible, true events in Ponchatoula's rearview mirror. The Murder of Claudia Elizabeth Lawrence : Crime Documentary

43:12
Claudia Lawrence, a chef at the University of York, England, disappeared on 18 March 2009. Although the police have treated her disappearance as a case of murder, with various people arrested (but later released), her fate is unclear. Lawrence was last seen near her home in Melrosegate, Heworth, York, on the afternoon of 18 March, as she returned from her work as a chef at the University of York's Goodricke College at the Roger Kirk Centre. That evening she spoke to her parents by telephone, making plans with her mother to spend Mother's Day together. Lawrence later sent a text message to a friend and has not been heard from since. The last text message from her was sent at 8:23 p.m., and her last received message, from a bar worker in Cyprus, was at 9:12 p.m. Lawrence's passport and bank cards were left at her home when she went missing. Lawrence was reported missing to North Yorkshire Police (NYP) after she failed to arrive at work for her early morning shift the following day. NYP later reported that they were now treating her disappearance as a suspected murder. Speaking on the BBC's Today programme on 4 June 2009, Lawrence's father Peter said he doubted NYP claims that she had a secret life. He queried the comments made by Detective Superintendent Ray Galloway on the BBC's Crimewatch programme, specifically that parts of Claudia's life "remain a mystery" and that police believe she had "complicated relationships" that her family and friends knew nothing about. He later said that he "did not recognise" his daughter after the claims that had been made about her personal life. Six weeks after Lawrence went missing, the investigation into her disappearance was reclassified from a missing person's case to a suspected murder enquiry, although NYP have acknowledged they have no evidence that Lawrence is dead.

English Vocabulary: Crime & Criminals

09:19
Do you like to watch the daily news? Do you love detective shows? Then you need this lesson on the vocabulary of crime. Here, you'll learn about five common crimes and five types of theft. You'll also learn what to call the people who commit these crimes. After the lesson, take the quiz at http://www.engvid.com/english-vocabulary-crime-criminals/ And don't forget to check out the full EngVid resource on 50 different types of crimes and criminals at http://www.engvid.com/english-resource/vocabulary-crime-criminals TRANSCRIPT Hi. I'm Rebecca from engVid, and this vocabulary lesson is about the topic of crime. Okay? Let's start by looking at a few headlines. All right, the first one: "Banker charged with embezzlement." Next one: "Celebrity arrested for shoplifting." Last one: "Man jailed for manslaughter." Okay? Now, there are three vocabulary words there that have to do with crimes: "embezzlement", "shoplifting", "manslaughter". If you don't know what they mean, by the end of this lesson, you will. Okay? So let's get started. So, let's look at five words that have to do with crime. What I've done this time is I've written the meaning on the board, and what I'd like you to do is to think, because in... It's possible that you know the word; some of them are fairly common, and some are not so common. Okay? So try to think what it is, and work with me. So the first word refers to the act of setting fire to a building, or a shop, or something on purpose; intentionally. Do you know what that word is in English? It starts with an "a", and it is "arson". Okay? That's the act of setting fire to a building on purpose. Maybe the person is trying to get some insurance money, or something like that. It's called "arson", and the person who does that is called an "arsonist". Next: What is the word for the crime of forcing sex on someone, or forcing someone to have sex? That one starts with an "r", and it's called "rape". Okay? The person who does that is called a "rapist". Next: What's the word for the act of killing someone on purpose, with a plan? It starts with "m", most people are familiar, unfortunately, with this word, which is "murder". The person is called a "murderer", so you add another "er" at the end. This one is the act of threatening to reveal secrets, and demanding money in order to keep quiet about those secrets. Sometimes... Or very often this is in connection with someone who is famous, a politician, or something like that. Okay? Do you know what that is? It starts with a "b" and it's called "blackmail". Okay? To blackmail someone, to threaten to reveal secrets. Next, killing someone accidentally or through negligence. What's that? Here, we said killing someone on purpose, which is murder, but this crime is called "manslaughter". Okay? Manslaughter. Killing someone accidentally or through negligence. "Negligence" means not paying enough attention to something you were supposed to be paying attention to. For example, if something happens to a child or something like that. Okay? So, these are the first five. We have five more which we're going to look at next. Okay, the next five words all have something to do with stealing, but different kinds of stealing, so we have different words for the different crimes. All right? Let's see if you know what they are. So, the first word refers to stealing in general. "Stealing", by itself, first of all, in case you're not sure, means taking something without permission, without paying for it. All right? Or from a place that's not your own place, etc. Something that's not yours. So, what is the general word for stealing in English? It starts with a "t". The word is "theft". Okay? The word is "theft", the person who does it is called a "thief". Next, stealing from a bank or shop with force or violence. With a gun, perhaps, things like that. What's that? It's kind of stealing, again, but it has a different word. It's called... It starts with an "r". "Robbery". Okay? And the person is a "robber". Might be a bank robber. It doesn't have to be only a bank robber. It could also be a robber of this in a store. All right? Next one, breaking into a home to steal. What is that crime called? This one starts with a "b". Okay? Do you know what it is? It's called "burglary". Okay? Now, I know you may not be able to see these words very well, and also what I'm saying about the people, like this one who is called a "burglar", but there will be a resource on our website about this vocabulary. So you'll have the crimes, as well as the criminals, so you can always check there if you want to know exactly what the words are, how to spell them, and so on. Next one, stealing money in your care. What I mean by that is this is a word to refer to the crime of... It's sometimes called a white-collar crime, someone who is in a... A position of responsibility, and is responsible for a lot of money, steals. Over time, usually. Not maybe at one time.

The Postmodern Detective: Contemporary London Crime Fiction - Dr Jenny Bavidge

52:50
The urban detective has traditionally been a figure supremely able to penetrate the mysteries of the city, yet set apart from the populace he protects. Have recent London crime stories abandoned their confidence in the interpretative abilities of the detective? Can we still believe in omniscient figures such as Dickens' Inspector Bucket or Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes? Is London still a place where mysteries can be satisfactorily solved? This talk will explore the changing role and persona of the London detective, and look at novels where the detecting is done by some unlikely figures, including female pharmacists (Janet Stevenson's London Bridges) or children (Siobhan Dowd's The London Eye Adventure). The transcript and downloadable versions of the lecture are available from the Gresham College website: http://www.gresham.ac.uk/lectures-and-events/the-postmodern-detective-contemporary-london-crime-fiction Gresham College has been giving free public lectures since 1597. This tradition continues today with all of our five or so public lectures a week being made available for free download from our website. http://www.gresham.ac.uk

Major Crime Detectives: Can You Help Identify Robbery Suspect?

01:25
Spokane Valley Major Crimes Detectives are working to identify this suspect who robbed the Mobil Gas Station in Spokane Valley. On October 21, 2018, at approximately 2:30 a.m., Spokane Valley Sheriff’s Deputies responded to a call of an armed robbery at the Mobil Gas Station located at 14704 E. Sprague in Spokane Valley. The store clerk stated the suspect, a white male, walked in the southside door. He was wearing a bright orange sweatshirt with the hood up over his head, black gloves on his hands and a mask covering most of his face. He had a brown paper bag in his hand and demanded all the money in the cash register. The clerk asked if he was serious, the suspect stated he was, apologized and handed her the paper bag. After receiving the money, the suspect calmly walked out the same door and continued south through the parking lot, toward Adams. The suspect never displayed a weapon but the clerk said it appeared he had one in his sweatshirt pocket and due to his mannerisms, she believed he was armed and feared for her safety if she did not cooperate. The suspect was described as a white male, approximately 6’00”, with a medium/stocky build and was estimated to be in his late 20’s to early 30’s. He may have blue eyes and blond hair which is believed to be short because none of his hair stuck out from under his hood/mask but it was possibly pulled back, out of sight. Deputies quickly established a perimeter and a K9 Unit searched the area but the suspect was not located. Anyone who has information regarding this robbery or can help identify this suspect is urged to call Major Crime Detective Scott Bonney at 509-477-3125, reference #10147731.

Here’s a collection of 10 fine riddles and detective stories with a twist to give the whole family a proper mental workout. TIMESTAMPS: Which door is safe? 1:06 The Eiffel Tower 2:40 A murder in a sauna 3:46 An angry wife 4:57 A fly in the coffee 5:50 A broken statuette 6:46 Mr. James is dead 8:12 A familiar stranger 9:34 A closed car 10:18 A key to treasure 11:06 #riddles #detectiveriddles Music: https://www.youtube.com/audiolibrary/music SUMMARY: - One morning, little Mary got trapped in a castle in Costa Rica. There were 4 doors, but only one led to freedom. The doors opened up to the following: Lava that would immediately melt anyone A killer clown that would beat any person to death A deadly frost that would freeze her at once Cops that would shoot any man or woman indiscriminately Which door should she choose? - Guy de Maupassant hated the Eiffel Tower. So every day, he had lunch in the one place where it couldn’t be seen. What was that place? - 4 friends regularly visited the sauna together. They always brought something with them. Jack, a musician, took an iPod with him to listen to music. Steve, a banker, took a thermos to drink out of. Patrick and Michael were lawyers and took documents to read. One day, Patrick was found dead. He was killed by a sharp object. Policemen came immediately and conducted an investigation. They found nothing. How could this have happened? - Pete called his wife and said that he would be at home at 8. He came at 8:05. They had no special plans but still, the wife was angry because of his being late. Why did she get so mad? - Brendon sat in the coffee shop and found a fly in his drink. He asked the waitress to bring him another coffee. After he’d received a new cup and taken a sip he got angry. Brendon realized that it was the same cup of coffee that he had in the first place. How did he know he had the same cup of coffee? - John was alone at home and heard that something had fallen in his wife’s room. He entered and saw that her favorite statuette was broken. At that moment someone ran out of the room. John tried to catch up with the stranger. But in the street, the lenses on his eyeglasses fogged up because of cold weather. He could see nothing, giving the stranger the opportunity to disappear. John told this story to a policeman but he refused to investigate the case. The cop asked him to stop lying and admit that it was he who had broken the statuette. Was John’s story actually fake? - Mr. James was found dead in his room. The room had no window and the door was locked. The only 4 people who had a key to the room were questioned. Sophia the maid: “I came to wake up Mr. James; when I saw him dead, I screamed!” John the butler: “When I heard the scream, I ran into the room, turned on the light and saw Mr. James with a knife in his neck.” Sarah the governess: “I rushed up alongside John; when he turned on the light, the room was all bloody.” Jack the cook: “I was prepping breakfast and didn’t see anything.” Who did it? - Stan met a stranger whom he’d never seen before. Stan just heard about him and no descriptions of his appearance were ever mentioned. He wasn’t famous. Nevertheless, Stan understood immediately who the guy was. How was this possible? - A man has been shot in a car. There were no traces of gunpowder on his clothes. That meant that a murderer wasn’t inside the car while shooting him. There were no bullet holes in the car. Besides, all the doors and windows were closed. How could they have killed him? - An adventurer found a chest with treasures in a cave guarded by a pirate. He had 3 keys that were golden, silver and black. But only one of them could open the chest. The pirate would give the adventurer only one chance to reach the treasure. If he chose the right key, he would take the chest. If he was wrong, the pirate would kill him right there. The only clue was this cipher: TGK HOE ELY DEN. Which is the right key? Learn 15 English Phrasal Verbs about CRIME!

11:07
Do you like police shows or movies? This lesson is all about the phrasal verbs we use to talk about crime, the police, and criminals. You'll learn fifteen expressions that will help you understand what the police and criminals are talking about. I'll tell you a story and we'll talk about planning a crime, committing a crime, and what happens afterwards. Try to listen out for these phrasal verbs the next time you're watching your favorite detective show! TAKE THE QUIZ: https://www.engvid.com/phrasal-verbs-crime/ TRANSCRIPT Hi there. Welcome back to engVid with me, Benjamin. How are you today? Hope you're well wherever you're watching this from. In today's lesson we are looking at phrasal verbs to do with crime. Why might this be of interest to you? Well, I don't know. If you watch a TV detective series, which are becoming increasingly popular, then you will start to understand more if you're watching American or English series. God forbid you might come to the UK or America and find yourself in a situation in which you are needing to speak to the police. Maybe some of the words here will help you get out of that situation smoothly. Or you may just be able to use these phrasal verbs to help your overall conversational fluency. Today's section is... Today's lesson is organized into three sections. We have before a crime, an incident; we have during; and we have what happened after. So, a few years ago I had a German student who came to visit me here in London, and I showed him around for a week. Lovely guy called Robert. And I took him to the law courts, so I took him to the most famous courts in London called the Old Bailey, which is where some quite nasty crimes where the... Where the people accused go to court. I'll just write that down, people accused. So if you're accused of a crime it means someone says you have done something bad, you need to be punished. So they go to court. They go to court. Okay? So, this particular story, I was there with Robert listening in the court to what had happened. Somebody had been put up. "To put somebody up to". Okay, so let's just... We have... We have a group of people. This person here, he is the boss of the group and he is putting pressure on, he wants this person to carry... Carry out a crime. Okay? To carry out a crime, to do something bad. So he starts putting somebody up to, so he starts going: "Come on, so-and-so, you can do this. It would be a really good idea. You'll get lots of money." Okay? So, "to put somebody up to", to put them up. You're putting them up, you're helping them be able to do it, to put somebody up to, to encourage, to help them to do it. "Put somebody up to", to make them think they can do it. Next phrase: "To lead somebody on". So, here we have boss, and we'll call this man Gareth. Boss says to Gareth: "Come on, Gareth, come with me. We're going to go and do something. It's a great idea." So, Gareth is following boss. Yes? He is taking the lead from the boss. He is leading him on. "Lead somebody on" is to give... Is to give a bad example. Next verbal... Phrasal verb: "Get mixed up in". Gareth has found that he is with the wrong people. Yeah? If you think of a box of sweets, they all get mixed up. Gareth, here, has got mixed up with some bad people. "To get mixed up in" means to hang out with... To get mixed up in, to hang out with the wrong people. Okay. "Lean on". Gareth has started saying: "Mm, not sure, boss, if that's what I want to do. I'm not sure if it's a good idea to go into a shop with a gun and ask for all of their money." But boss starts leaning on Gareth. Yeah? He starts leaning on Gareth and says: "Come on, Gareth, you know it's a good thing to do." Okay? So he leans on. "To lean on" means to put pressure. And to lean on someone, you could use that in a business context as well, meaning to put a bit of pressure on someone to do something. Gareth says yes. He agrees to go into this gambling shop with a gun and ask for all of their money. So, he comes into the shop with a balaclava, with a hat with just eyes, and he says: "This is a hold up. I'm going... This is a hold up." Okay? A "hold up" means, you know, hold your hands up. Okay? It's a hold up. Everyone's going to put their hands up, and Gareth is going to come and take the money. Okay? To... To do a hold up, to give a hold up, to make a hold up, to create a hold up. A hold up. A hold up. Now, if Gareth went home and said to boss: "I got a little bit scared. I didn't do it", then boss might beat Gareth up. "To beat up" means to attack, to hurt. Okay? To cause physical pain. Okay. Gareth comes back from the boss, says: "Okay, okay, I'll go back into this shop and continue with what I was doing." He finds that the doors have been locked, so now he needs to break in. "Break" means to damage something. He has to break the doors to get in. It's a break in.
