Linguistics, Style and Writing in the 21st Century - with Steven Pinker
Does writing well matter in an age of instant communication? Drawing on the latest research in linguistics and cognitive science, Steven Pinker replaces the recycled dogma of style guides with reason and evidence. Subscribe for regular science videos: http://bit.ly/RiSubscRibe Watch the Q&A here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7rYAnYXIhL0 In this brand-new talk, introduced by Lord Melvyn Bragg, Steven argues that style still matters: in communicating effectively, in enhancing the spread of ideas, in earning a reader’s trust and, not least, in adding beauty to the world. Steven Pinker is an experimental psychologist and one of the world’s foremost writers on language, mind, and human nature. He is Professor in the Department of Psychology at Harvard University and conducts research on language and cognition but also writes for publications such as the New York Times, Time, and is the author of many books, including The Language Instinct and How the Mind Works. Melvyn Bragg is a broadcaster, writer and novelist. He was made a Life Peer (Lord Bragg of Wigton) in 1998. How to write like an architect
Take the 'How to Write Like an Architect Course,' Plus get Doug's hand written architecture font. https://thearchitectsacademy.usefedora.com/p/how-to-write-like-an-architect Hi Im Doug Patt and this is how to architect. Today well learn How to write like an architect. The basic drafting tool for an architect when working by hand is a parallel rule. You can also use a t-square. Ill be using an ames lettering guide to create the lines for the lettering. First were going to create our horizontal lines using the lettering guide. The guide has a variety of spacing options to create just about any combination your looking for. I will also be using a small triangle. Ive added tape to this one for ink lettering to avoid smearing. Ill also be using a .5mm pentel drafting pencil and a paper mate, flair pen for the letters. Ive created a small grid here to give me some guidance when I lay out the letters. Id say the most important thing to remember about hand lettering is that your letters need to seem animated while still appearing orderly and neat. I think this is achieved by using a few conventions. For example, youll notice the letters have some amount of incompleteness. The second diagonal on the A does not follow all the way to the guide line, the bottom of the B or D isnt complete, The bottom line on the E starts in front of the vertical. The second thing is that all the horizontals in the letters are drawn by hand, not using the parallel rule. They all sit at a slight angle making them dynamic and yet uniform. Youll also notice that I use the ruler for all vertical lines. Lastly, when making your Os, Qs, Cs, Gs, even 8s and 9s, the letters and numbers are simply combinations of semi circles. Even the letter S is made the same way. These are two images from my portfolio. They are good examples of how your strings of words will come together to form orderly yet animated paragraphs. This is a quote I found from Tyron Edwards Dictionary of thoughts I enjoy referring to from time to time. It seemed appropriate for a youtube video because giving people the most amount of knowledge in the least amount of time is really what drives the information age. So, remember hand lettering is about style and legibility. Mine is definitely stylized and probably a little tough to read sometimes. So thanks for checking out how to write like an architect. Im Doug

How to Write Neatly + Improve Your Handwriting
Sharing you some tips on how to make your handwriting neat and legible. I hope all these tips will help you improve your handwriting! PENS used in this video: Marvy Uchida LePen Technical Drawing Pens 0.8 and 0.5mm Marvy Uchida LePen Fine Line Marker (black and green) Sakura Gelly Roll Moonlight Bold Point Gel Ink Pen (pink) Pilot G-Tec-C Gel Pen 0.4mm Muji Gel Ink Ballpoint Pen 0.5mm (red) Muji Smooth Writing Gel Ink Ballpoint Pen 0.5 mm (yellow) ― Music: Nicolai Heidlas – Blue Sky Over Hawaii https://soundcloud.com/nicolai-heidlas Camera: Nikon D5300 Lens: Sigma 17 50mm f/2.8 EX DC OS HSM Video Editing Software: Sony Vegas Pro 13 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS: 1. Do you still maintain this kind of handwriting when you’re in a rush? No, it becomes sloppy. It’s hard to make all the letterforms consistent when I’m rushing. 2. Do you write like this when you take notes during class lectures because this is so time-consuming? Most of the time, Yes 😊. However, it also depends on the teacher and the amount of information they are putting in during lectures. a. If the teacher talks less and/or creates summarized bullet points on the PowerPoint slides, then I can write as neatly as the one shown in this video. b. If the teacher talks too fast and has a lot of input, that’s when my handwriting becomes messy. By messy, I meant my “chicken scratch way” of writing. Messy notes are written on scratch papers. But I always make sure that I rewrite them on my notebook during my free time. Rewriting not only makes my notes look neat and organized but it also helps me retain information and improve my memory. Transfers can be time-consuming, but I’d rather invest my energy into something that contributes to my growth and knowledge. 3. How did you learn to write like this? We had handwriting classes in Grade School. Handwriting class was basically one of the subjects included in the school’s curriculum (just like Math, but it did not involve too much neurons...LOL). During those days, I needed to work on multiple worksheets daily. Somehow, I adapted the handwriting style that was taught to me and has become a habit since then. As my handwriting teacher would always say it, “Write neatly until it becomes as natural as breathing.” 😉 4. How do you write on long essays? What I usually do is I write a draft first with my chicken scratch handwriting. Then, I rewrite it as fast and neatly as I can. I always make sure my handwriting looks legible for the teacher’s eyes. Although the content of the essay is what truly matters, I still believe that the handwriting has a slight influence on the examiner. I think a teacher will appreciate the work more if it’s written neatly. Though I have to admit, I am usually one of the students who finishes writing last (but still I’m able to finish it on time, so what’s the harm?). 5. Is this really your handwriting? YES, when I’m not in a rush. 6. What’s your pen grasp? Thumb tuck grip, my thumb tucked under my index finger.

Formal English and informal English
Sometimes formal and informal English can seem like two different languages. Sian's here to show you four features of informal English - and some ways you can make these features more formal. For more, visit our website: http://www.bbc.co.uk/learningenglish/english/course/towards-advanced/unit-19/session-1 Transcript: Hi, Sian here for BBC Learning English. In this Masterclass we're going to look at some differences between formal and informal English. Hey, how's it going? Good afternoon, how are you? Sometimes formal and informal can seem like two different languages. In the same way you wouldn't normally wear shorts and a t-shirt to a job interview, if you use language that's too formal or too informal, you can give a bad impression. Let's look at some differences between formal and informal English. Now, I received an email this morning. Have a look at this email - do you think the language is formal or informal - and why? Dear Mrs Brown, I'm writing to find out whether you have any jobs in your company this summer. At the mo I'm studying Economics at uni. I have been working part-time in a shop and recently they promoted me to the role of manager. I am enthusiastic. I work hard. I pay attention to detail. Ok, so that email used informal language and it's too informal for this style of letter. We're going to look at four features that make this informal and we're going to change it to make it more formal. Number one: choice of vocabulary. In informal English we use more common words and more phrasal verbs. For example here we have a phrasal verb: find out. It would be better to use a more formal equivalent like enquire. Same with jobs, this is quite informal, so instead let's use vacancies here. Instead we have "I'm writing to enquire whether you have any vacancies." Number two. It's more common in informal language to use abbreviations, contractions, shortened forms of verbs. Let's have a look. So, here we have at the mo, which is short for at the moment. This is OK when you're speaking, but not when you're writing. Here, we can use currently which is even more formal. Same here, uni is short for university, so don't use this short form in a letter. "Currently, I am studying Economics at university." Quite often in formal language we choose passive structures over active. Let's have a look here. The active sentences they promoted me is quite informal - it'd be much better to use a passive form here to make it more formal: I was promoted. So, "Recently I was promoted to the role of manager." This doesn't mean don't use active structures in a formal letter, but have a think about whether a passive one is more appropriate. Finally, in informal English, short, simple sentences are much more common. Whereas in formal English, we use more complex sentence structures. Take a look at this one. Here we have three short, simple sentences and this is fine in informal English, but in formal English it's better to use a complex structure. We can do this by adding relative pronouns or linkers. For example, "I am an enthusiastic person who works hard and pays attention to detail. So, would you kindly visit our website... ah, we're friends, that's too formal. Go to our website bbclearningenglish.com for more information about this and to practise formal and informal English. See you soon - goodbye!
