Cross Joins in Power Query: Measuring Student Progress

08:55
In this video we're measuring student progress against program requirement. A full outer join is used as a final step. However, the cross join is needed so that we can identify where students haven't done ANY work in a category. The full outer join won't pick up data that doesn't exist. What is a Cross Join? It's a way of merging data when you need everything on List 1 to be matched with everything on List 2. A cross join isn't one of the 6 joins packaged in Get & Transform (Power Query) and isn't used much. However, the cross join does have a purpose. This video shows how easy it is to make a cross join but more importantly: - A practical example of when to use a cross join. - Why a cross join was used instead of other joins or Get and Transform (Power Query) features. In this situation, we're measuring student progress against program requirement. A full outer join is used as a final step. However, the cross join is needed so that we can identify where students haven't done ANY work in a category. The full outer join won't pick up data that doesn't exist. How to Extract Data from a Spreadsheet using VLOOKUP, MATCH and INDEX

15:54
When you need to find and extract a column of data from one table and place it in another, use the VLOOKUP function. This function works in any version of Excel in Windows and Mac, and also in Google Sheets. It allows you to find data in one table using some identifier it has in common with another table. The two tables can be on different sheets or even on different workbooks. There is also an HLOOKUP function, which does the same thing, but with data arranged horizontally, across rows. See the companion tutorial on Tuts+ at https://computers.tutsplus.com/tutorials/how-to-extract-data-from-a-spreadsheet-using-vlookup-match-and-index--cms-20641. By Bob Flisser.

How to Combine 2 Excel Workbooks Using VLOOKUP

08:22
This is a request from one of my viewers. In his organization, two people were working on this project and he needed to produce a consolidated Excel worksheet. Fortunately, when I look at the workbooks he sent me, I noticed that both had a MemberID field that contained the Unique Account Numbers. With this knowledge, I decided that the VLOOKUP Function would be the easiest way to complete this task. Here is a list of the Excel Techniques that I demonstrate in this tutorial: * Move or Copy a worksheet to another Excel Workbook * Create a Named Range to use as the "Table_array" in the VLOOKUP Function * Use "Mixed Cell References" - e.g. $A4 - in VLOOKUP Function * Use FALSE as the optional 4th Argument in VLOOKUP to produce an "Exact Match" * Use IFERROR Function to prevent Error Messages from appearing I invite you to visit my secure online shopping website - http://shop.thecompanyrocks.com - to examine the many training resources that I offer for sale. Step # 1 -- Opening a Simple Spreadsheet Start MS Excel and load a sheet with some information. Here you can see some price information about some simple goods and a total row utilizing the SUM formula. Normally when we change one of the values, the "TOTAL" will change as the SUM formula will update it automatically. Here we can see that this is not happening, even when we change a value to "100". Step # 2 -- Switching on Automatic Formulas To enable the automatic calculation of formulas you need to click on the "Formulas" tab in the main menu, from here you need to go to the "Calculation" area and click on the "Calculation Options" icon, in the drop down list click on the "Automatic" option. Step # 3 -- Seeing the Changes Applied As formulas will now be calculating automatically you will see the "TOTAL" column automatically adjust to a larger number as the SUM formula takes into account the new figures. From this point on all formulas will calculate on their own and that is how to make excel formulas calculate automatically.
