Designing for the Augmented Body: Fashion and Wearable Technology | Amanda Parkes | TEDxFultonStreet
Amanda takes us on a whirlwind journey through some of the latest advances and projects in Wearable Computing. The newest companies are rethinking the very nature of technology. For instance, instead of sewing a battery into a garment, they're making garments that can generate their own power. New technology looks more like fashionable jewelry than like a computer. Dr. Amanda Parkes is a fashion and wearable technology expert, the Chief of Technology and Research at Manufacture NY, a fashion incubator/factory/research facility. She holds a PhD from the MIT Media Lab and is a member of the Business of Fashion 500 People Shaping the Global Fashion Industry. As a biomedia designer and fashion technologist, Amanda Parkes stands at the intersection of new media, textiles, and fashion. After completing her BA in art history and BS in mechanical engineering (product design) at Stanford, Parkes dedicated her career to discovering new ways that digital technology and ‘smart materials’ affect everyday lives. Her Twitter handle describes her as “one part algae, one part fashion, a dash of robots and a smattering of installation art.” This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Fashion designing is quite a lucrative job and is in heavy demand these days. Whether it is Hollywood or Bollywood, fashion designers are very much needed for preparing bewitching and glamorous outfits for red carpet events, parties and other occasions that involve celebrities. The top countries for studying fashion designing include UK, Japan, United States of America, France and Italy. The fashion industry is very competitive. And in order to secure a good job, it is very important for a student to get enough training. He/she should be a creative person with exemplary artistic skills. Masters degree and certificate programmes are also available so that you can educate yourself enough to start a prosperous and bright career in fashion designing. There are several careers you can find in this field itself. Other career opportunities you can explore in the field of fashion include fashion marketing, journalism, public relations, performing arts, photography, management and merchandising. To become a successful fashion designer, it is very important to get a diploma or degree at first. New Skins: Computational Design for Fashion Workshop
New Skins is a three-week intensive interdisciplinary research project where students and professionals in the fashion, art, architecture and computing industries join forces to design and fabricate second skins for the human body. Computational systems will be developed alongside material systems that can be deployed as wearable objects.. Core77 has had the pleasure of chronicling the workshop led by designer Francis Bitonti, which took place from July 22 to August 8 at Pratt's Digital Arts and Humanities Research Center in Brooklyn, NY, with additional support from Makerbot and 3D NYC Lab. As a pioneer in the digital fashion design space, Bitonti's practice is primarily concerned with the wearable applications of computationally-based design methodologies and cutting-edge manufacturing technologies. His efforts in the classroom are an extension of his work in the studio, a fast-paced, process-centric approach to new and emerging technologies and their potential to yield never-before-scene results. What is the clothing of the future: SMART wearables & e-textiles
The idea of creating smart clothing was first prompted by the science fiction but even experts didn’t expect the e-textile revolution to start to fast and progress so rapidly. Nowadays smart clothing is used to encase wearable technology and provide the user with new, unseen before capabilities and functionality. There are many working prototypes and startups, which are aimed at redefining the fashion industry. Right now wearable technology has found its best use in the sport, fitness, wellness and medical industries (special monitors may be used for tracking all the vital body metrics) but creative solutions may influence the creation of casual clothing (there are already substances, which can make clothing repel water, dust and other pollutants). Smart clothing is definitely a thing of the future and this industry has everything it takes to become a mainstream technology. More about such technologies here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ixN3Uf6ZrRo In this video presentation we have reviewed such futuristic clothing designs (fair use of footage, all credits are below and in the video): - Synapse dress, which lights up the dress, depending on the person’s moon: www.vimeo.com/106431614 - Smart fitness tracker, which can help monitor performance to reach better results: www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zbtc-unamZs - A smart shoe, which can change its style: www.youtube.com/watch?v=_-HAu9FEbss - An overview of a smart-shirt created for running: www.youtube.com/watch?v=zO80nmgCbZs - A scientific story about the technology of smart gloves, used for gesture-controlling technology: www.youtube.com/watch?v=ci-yB6EgVW4 - The special compound, which makes clothing waterproof and resistant to pollutants (hydrophobic clothing). Thanks for your time. Please share your thoughts on the clothes of the future.

Predictions - Future fashion & wearable technology (ISCF - Clean Growth)
This Future Fashion film uses examples of what currently exists in fashion tech to illustrate how the seemingly impossible is already being achieved, and what this means for the future. From a current invention – a cloak that changes colour and pattern in response to the weather, to a cloak that in twenty to thirty years’ time could make us invisible! Presenter Emily Honeywell, from Innovate UK’s IC tomorrow programme, expands on this theme: “to look 20 years into the future, it is hardly possible to think what our 'wearables' will be like. We are now at the point where technology is moving at such a speed that it's capacity to enhance human capabilities and create magical design almost outruns our imagination!” Welcome to the future of wearable tech! Technology outrunning our imagination? So where do we go from here? It appears that we are now at the point technological progression is at such a speed that its capacity to enhance our human capabilities almost outruns our imagination around applications. No matter how outrageous we are in our visions for the future, we are at a very exciting time now where the gap between tech and our imaginations has significantly narrowed. We are now at the point we are beginning to make our wildest wearable dreams come true. #Techstyle: 3D Printing, Customization, and the Future of Fashion
"We are in an extremely individualistic age of fashion," explains Michelle Finamore, curator of Fashion Arts at Boston's Museum of Fine Arts and co-curator of the current exhibit, #Techstyle. The exhibit showcases and celebrates the fusion of contemporary fashion and technology, a relationship Finamore believes will produce an explosion of personal expression through customization. Subscribe to Reason TV for daily content like this: http://bit.ly/1Ocr2AL She points to the rise of digital printing as a prime example of fashion's move towards personalization. Wearable Technology Powered Art and Fashion Design
Wearable Technology Powered Art and Fashion Design presents latest developments in the area of technologically augmented clothing. The program crosses the disciplines of fashion design, performance art, wearable computing and interaction design. The selected pieces envision a future in which our second skin, our clothes, become relevant element in our social life, in our communication and interaction with others. This is achieved by embedding electronics seamlessly into the textiles. After the miniaturisation of processors, sensors and batteries designers can now use these to create expressive and performative garments beyond the everyday experience. And whilst artists use the same technologies, their pieces have a different objective they visualise the density of our highly technical world and the invisible flood of data surrounding us. The program is designed around the idea of demonstration and knowledge transfer. The Netherlands Media Art Institute will host the exhibition and the designers and artists talks. Almost all artists and designers will be present in Amsterdam during the festival and give insight into their practice in the forrm of moderated talks. Sabine Seymour, author of the book Fashionable Technology, and expert in the field of wearables will contribute an illustrative lecture. The performative and expressive nature of the pieces will be demonstrated at the opening at Melkweg. Models will wear the high-tech clothes and accessories in a live show and give the audience the opportunity to explore and experience the designs. The program mirrors the current design and art scene engaged in wearable technology. The inspiring selection comprised by curator Susanne Jaschko was developed and produced in the Netherlands and in other European countries, as well as North America.

The future of Fashion & wearable technologies
Technology has been always crucial to the development of fashion, but as technology improves and advances, it is being more and more closely integrated into our clothing. Wearable technologies currently exist in two spaces - as conceptual pieces by artisan designers, and as engineering driven wearable products that are taken to market. But, as Danielle Wilde explains, the future for wearable technologies lies in creating products with expressive aesthetic qualities that can be taken to market. Danielle Wilde is a visiting research Fellow, Centre for Smart Materials and Performance Textiles at RMIT University.

The company is also known for some of the performance technologies built into their shoes, including the Cantilever Heel (heel support), the ARC – Anatomical Rebound Cradle (comprehensive foot cushioning and arch support), and Avia's FOM technology (shock compression).[10] In 1991, Avia filed a lawsuit against Nike, alleging that Nike's ''Air 180'' and ''Air Force 180'' running and basketball shoes infringed upon Avia patents. Avia accused Nike of pirating its ''Cantilever'' technology, which uses a cushion to provide shock absorption and stability. The company contended the technology has been the basis of its products since Avia was founded in 1980. Avia widened the suit in January 1992[11] and settled in December 1992.[12] Converse React Converse — REACT Juice Technology Sneaker Shown: Converse Aero Jam Year: 1993 Wait, what? There's a responsive, seemingly radioactive fluid in my sneaker that may or may not automatically transition to the area of my foot when needed for running and jumping and, a 6-7 Grandmama wears them? Gimmick or not, REACT Juice is probably one of the coolest-sounding sneaker innovations of all-time and Grandmama is the epitome of marketing genius. How could the Aero Jam not have been commercially successful? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pIAfD2sRfg4 Reebok ZigTech Reebok — ZigTech Technology Sneaker Shown: Reebok Zig Pulse Year: 2011 Reebok Zig is an athletic footwear technology and collection of shoes designed by Reebok. ZigTech debuted in January 2010 and was first introduced with the ZigPulse later that year.[1] ZigTech includes a zigzag foam sole that is designed to push athletes forward.[2] The design assists in energy return to the wearer by absorbing impact at the heel and dispersing the energy through the zigzag composition which propels the athlete forward and also reduces stress on the shins.[3] Reebok has released various styles of ZigTech designs that are compatible across a variety of sports.[4] https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reebok_Zig Nike Shox Nike — Shox Technology Sneaker Shown: Nike Shox BB4 Year: 2000 Inspired by the springy indoor running track at Harvard University, Nike's Shox not only absorb impact while running, but also claim to spring back and add more power to one's stride. The "Boings" certainly seemed legit when Nike gave Vince Carter a pair for the 2000 Olympic games Shox is a shoe feature developed by Nike and incorporated in several of their flagship athletic sports shoes. Shox is an array of small hollow columns in the midsoles of the shoe, usually of rubber. There are different formations, but Shox are usually four circular columns in a square formation to provide cushioning. There can also be five or six Shox, 25 mm high, though they may vary in height, and triangular and rectangular Shox that Nike says provide better stability. Some shoes have midsoles made entirely of Shox, like the TL series. Nike claims that Shox not only absorb impact from heel strike while running, but also claims they "spring back" and add more power to a runner's stride. Aside from this alleged boost in speed, the Shox is supposed to provide superior shock absorption with high-tech elastic foam. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nike_Shox Adidas springblade – Aug 2013 What is it? An midsole/outsole made up of 16 high-grade polymer blades, forgoing any sort of traditional foam-based midsole compound. Each blade features a slightly different width and angle, resulting in an individually tuned configuration. Currently, it has only been applied to the SpringBlade running model. How does it work? SpringBlade technology quite literally functions much like a spring. The idea is to provide a high amount of energy return, giving runners an extra push forward as they complete their stride. As soon as the foot strikes the ground, the blades compress, quickly releasing spring-like energy as the gait cycle finishes. While foam compounds only rebound in a vertical direction, the angled blades in SpringBlade technology offer multidirectional responsiveness and support. http://www.complex.com/sneakers/2013/07/know-your-tech-adidas-springblade http://www.complex.com/sneakers/2012/02/the-25-greatest-sneaker-innovations-of-all-time/14
