Amazing mathematical "magic" square. A spectator names any two digit number between 22-99 and after you fill in the 16 boxes there will be 28 possible combinations where the boxes will add up to the spectators number. Magic squares have fascinated professional mathematicians as well as mathematical hobbyists for over 4000 years. The Lo Shu magic square with its uniqueness captures the symmetry and beauty of mathematics, Dürer's square backdrops his famous engraving Melancholia, and Benjamin Franklin constructed them to keep his mind sharp. We will explore a few magic squares and unlock some of their mysteries.

This presentation includes the Lo Shu 3 x 3 Magic Square from China, the 4 x 4 Magic Square from Albrecht Durer's "Melancholia", and Benjamin Franklin's 8 x 8 Magic Square. This presentation does not cover all properties of these magic squares, and further investigations are available to the viewer.

The complexity of Magic Squares goes far beyond the Sudoku puzzles we see in our daily newspapers. From 1200BC China, through artists like Duerer, to the master of the 16x16 Magic Square, Banjamin Franklin, Robin Wilson, Gresham Professor of Geometry, gives a quick overview of the possibilities of squares of numbers where the rows and columns add up to the same sum.
This is the 13th part of 'A Millennium of Mathematical Puzzles'.
The full lecture is available (in 24 parts) here on YouTube, or it can be downloaded (like all of our lectures) in its complete form from the Gresham College website, in video, audio or text formats:
http://www.gresham.ac.uk
Gresham College has been giving free public lectures since 1597. This tradition continues today with all of our five or so public lectures a week being made available for free download from our website.

We trace the discovery of these Squares to the Emperor Yu the Great, circa 3000 BCE
In 1275 CE, the mathematician Yang Hui wrote extensively about these Squares in his
Continuation of Ancient Mathematical Methods for Elucidating the Strange Properties of Numbers.
Artist Albrecht Durer and
statesman Benjamin Franklin
brought the Squares to modernity
in the form of art, science, and “recreational math.”
3 x 3 SQUARE

4 x 4 Square

This is a slideshow of images of the "The Magic of Reading" with Ben Franklin, billed as the greatest educational school assembly program in the world.
Dr. Rich Davis has performed in character and dress as Benjamin Franklin at more than 5,000 schools, libraries and colleges.
Davis makes learning fun. As you can see he uses the audience in special ways to make the program compelling and memorable.
"The Magic of Reading" is about reading, history, the life and times of Ben Franklin, and what Davis calls the joy, or magic, of learning.

Wo'Chen the court sorcerer of the Ming Dynasty formulated an equation for predicting future events. having studied Kabalic texts from explorers from the west, he hypothesized that one could predict future events if you knew what was happening at this moment. His theory: We are only a sum of our experiences. Each action has a reaction.
though the equation was burned when the ming dynasty read his unfavorable predictions, Master mentalist and part time near psychic Scott Xavier shows of a formula for divining a persons thought of number. The number is secured by an audience member and told not to relinquish it under any circumstance. Then Dr. Scott Xavier performs some mathematical equations and reveals her thought of number...
