Fresh Water Meets Sea Water – Boundary Explained
This is the Fraser River Delta just in front of Vancouver BC Canada, this is where sea water meets fresh water. The river water from Fraser River, flowing into the ocean water of the Strait of Georgia. Modern Science has discovered that in the places where two different bodies meet, there is a barrier between them. This barrier creates a noticeable line, as each water body has its own temperature, salinity, and density. If you go on google earth and look up Fraser River or Sea Island which is an airport right at the water edge, you will see this boundary line stretching for miles. Survival Camping: #1 Turn Seawater into Fresh Water with Trash
The purpose of this adventure was to have fun while practicing survival skills. I carried an ultralight backpack, camped between the sand dunes and used trash on the beach to distill seawater. Two cups of drinking water per hour! Amazingly simple. Awesome fun. During the past several years I’ve been intersted in making portable stills for water distillation: simple approaches that could be used when hiking, especially in emergencies. The stills I’ve made have continuously improved, with the help for may people from the bushcraft and survival YouTube community. As my friend Darby (RiverBendSurvival) says: “The only way to master it, is to get in the dirt and do it.” Distillation removes biological, salt and heavy metal contamination from drinking water. Distallation is often the preferred method of water treatment in deveoping countries where water is heavily contaminated. Distillation is used for drinking water on ships. How to convert seawater into drinking water [Class 6, Chapter 14, Water, NCERT]
Clearly, I do not want you to get stuck on a deserted island. Also, thankfully, I was not stuck on a deserted island myself; thus finding a plastic container wasn't too difficult. This video was a contrived attempt to urge middle school students to think about evaporation and condensation. Please do not use this method to distill water if you are actually stuck on an island. The water you produce will not be drinkable. And if you are watching this on YouTube while stranded on an island, then please check Whatsapp to see if you can connect with a friend who can come rescue you. Finally, here are some reliable sources that offer advice on how to collect drinking water in case you do get stranded. 1) National Geographic suggests that if you get stranded on an island, then your best chance of getting drinking water is to "collect rainwater." Primitive Technology Salt Water Filter is a full video tutorial on how to survive on an island where there is no fresh water. First we built a primitive pot, we perforated a small hole on the pot. Then we took a bamboo tube and made a chiller. Cooling water so that water vapor can condense into droplets to obtain maximum water. We take the sea water to boil. Fresh water then evaporates and produces fresh water. Salt will precipitate at the bottom of the pot. By the original technology we had to salvage sea water to obtain fresh water and salt. Freshwater fish vs seawater fish ion regulation-Animal Physiology
"Fish gills regulate ion differently in freshwater and saltwater." Marine water fish blood has a higher water concentration than their surrounding sea water. causing water molecules to diffuse out of the blood into their surrounding water by osmosis. These fish must replace the lost water, by the drinking their surrounding concentrated water, intaking salts which is then removed by active transport through their gills Na+-Cl- ATPase molecules, back to the seawater. Ion exchange in saltwater fish: The Na+ K+/2Cl- (NKCC) co-transporter brings in potassium ion (K+) and chloride ion (Cl-) from the extracellular fluid in the fish gill epithelial cells using the Na+ electrochemical gradient. The K+ and the Na+ separate from the 2Cl- in the the cell. The 2Cl- separate out and exit the cell through the apical surface via the Chloride channel down their concentration gradient. the K+ goes back to the extracellular fluid via the K+ channel from the cell. Na+ exit the cell that had entered through the NKCC via the Na+/K+ ATPase channel in exchange for K+ causing small potential difference (outside more negative due to the Cl- ions exiting than compared to the extracellular fluid) it drives the outward movement Na+ outside the cell. In freshwater fish water is absorbed through gills and skin by diffusion into the blood. While water moves in towards the higher osmotic pressure of the blood, Na+ and Cl- ions diffuse out of the fish, moving down their concentration gradients to the external environment. The fish then can actively take up the ions across their gills epithelial membranes from the surrounding environment to replace the constant loss of ions. Food is another way by which to replace lost Na+ and Cl-. Ion regulation is freshwater fish: The mechanism for Na+ uptake and Cl- are independent. From the dilute freshwater to the concentrated blood Na+ is actively transported against the concentration gradient. H+ is excreted out in exchange for Na+. The Cl-/HCO3 - exchange secretes the bicarbonate ion (HCO3-) in exchange for Cl- ions. HCO3- and H+ are metabolic wastes that are derived from the conversion carbon-dioxide(CO2) using carbonate anhydrase (CA). These metabolic wastes (H+ and HCO3) keeps it from generating large potential differences across the gill epithelium in freshwater fish. A protein that is responsible for sodium uptake uses ATP to exchange Na+ for K+. Primitive Technology Fresh Water Filter is our next video. In this video we show you how to get fresh water from the sea. When we are in a desert island, fresh water is extremely valuable. We use Primitive survival skills to get fresh water from the sea. Initially we created a system of fresh water filters including pots, evaporative gas pipes, chillers. We boil sea water in the pot then the steam will be led through the tube passing through the chiller and condensed into fresh water droplets. The important thing here is that we have a chiller tank. When steam passes through the cooling tank, the heat is suddenly cooled and condensed into droplets. we will get the maximum amount of water. Fresh Water Generator: How Fresh Water is Generated from Sea Water on Ships?
How marine fresh water generator works on ships? Fresh water is generally produced on board using the evaporation method. There are two things that are available in plenty on ship to produce fresh water –Seawater and heat. Thus fresh water is produced by evaporating sea water using heat from any of the heat source. The evaporated sea water is then again cooled by the sea water and the cycle repeats. Generally the heat source available is taken from the main engine jacket water, which is used for cooling the main engine components such as cylinder head, liner etc. The temperature available from this jacket water is about 70 deg. centigrade. But at this temperature the evaporation of water is not possible as we all know that the evaporation of water takes place at 100 deg centigrade under atmospheric pressure. Fresh water generator, one of the important machinery on board a ship, is something that cannot be done without. Fresh water produced from fresh water generator is used for drinking, cooking, washing and even running other important machinery which use fresh water as a cooling medium. What Happens When You Drink SeaWater?

As clean drinking water becomes more scarce, you maybe wondering…What happens if I drink seawater? Let’s first examine how our bodies absorb water. You may remember the process of Osmosis where water moves from a less concentrated solution to a more concentrated solution, through a semi permeable membrane. The cell’s membrane allows water to pass through, but not the particles dissolved in water, like salt. Normally the saltiness of water inside our cells is the same as the saltiness outside our cells. When you drink water, a concentration difference takes place. Water from the outside your cell moves inside to maintain balance. This is called an isotonic state. When you drink too much seawater, the saltiness outside your cells will increase rapidly and the cells force water molecules out in order to restore balance. So even if you are already dehydrated, drinking sea water will cause your cells to release more water and you will end up peeing out more liquid than you take in. Conversely if you chug a massive amount of pure water, the exact opposite will happen. The saltiness outside your cells will decrease rapidly and water will be forced into your cells. This can cause the cells to swell and burst, which in extreme cases leads to seizures, coma and sometimes death! This would only occur if you were to chug 6 liters or more in an instant though. So what can you do if you are stranded on a deserted island with absolutely NO fresh water around? The simplest way to extract fresh clean water from the ocean is through distillation, which separates the salt from the water. In order to distill water you must heat the sea water so it evaporates, then trap the evaporated water vapor until it cools and condenses back into liquid water. Kinda like the moisture on your bathroom mirror after a hot shower. This condensed water will be free of all salt and 100% safe to drink. DOES ICE MELT FASTER IN FRESH OR SALT WATER? Experiment PROCEDURE: Put your favorite food coloring in a ice cube tray with water and freeze. Fill one transparent cups up with tap water, and the other with tap water and add salt. Observe the rate of melting of each ice cube. EXPLANATION: I love the results of this experiment as it really surprise me. When I put salt on a ice cube it melts the ice very fast and when I saw this I could not believe it. The ice cube in the salt water melts much slower then the one in the fresh water. In the salt water the colored water from the melted ice cube forms a distinct layer that floats on top of the salt water. In the fresh water, the melted water sinks to the bottom and is evenly spread out. These observations can be interpreted by comparing the density of fresh water and salt water. When the ice melts, the water that results in very cold. It is more dense than the warmer tap water in the cup, and will thus sink. As we see on the left side. As the colder water sinks, it displaces and pushes up the warmer tap water from the bottom. As this warmer water comes into contact with the ice cube, it hastens its rate of melting. A convection current has been set up, where the colder water sinks and the warmer water is pushed up. Convection is the transfer of heat by the movement of fluids. In the cup of salt water, the cold water that results from the melting of the ice cube is less dense than the salt water, so it floats on top. There are no convection currents occurring here. Since the ice cube is constantly in contact with the very cold water, which prevents it from contacting the warmer water below, it takes a longer time to melt. This happens in the oceans where Icebergs last much longer in salt water then they do in fresh water. The melted ice from an iceberg will float on top of the salt water in the ocean, but will sink in fresh water. Ice cubes will cool a diet drink much faster then they will a sugared drink for this same reason. This barrier, however, is not a physical partition. The Arabic word ‘maraja‘ literally means ‘they both meet and mix with each other’. Early commentators of the Quran were unable to explain the two opposite meanings for the bodies of water, i.e. they meet and mix, and at the same time there is a barrier between them. Modern Science has discovered that in the places where two different seas meet, there is a barrier between them. This barrier divides the two seas so that each sea has its own temperature, salinity and density. There is a slanted unseen water barrier between the two seas through which water from one sea passes to the other. But when the water from one sea enters the other sea, it loses its distinctive characteristic and becomes homogenized with the other water. In a way this barrier serves as a transitional homogenizing area for the two waters. These scientific phenomena mentioned in the Quran was also confirmed by Dr. William Hay, a wellknown marine Scientist and Professor of Geological Sciences at the University of Colorado, U.S.A. This phenomena occurs in several places, including Egypt, where the river Nile flows into the Mediterranean Sea. Then which of the favours of your Lord will ye deny?

A clear container, salt, bowls of fresh water, food coloring, and cooking oil are needed. A thermometer and measuring cups and spoons are optional. The red liquid is salt water. it has a solution of 3 tablespoons of salt per cup of water. The salt water solution was stirred until the salt dissolved. The blue water is fresh water. Both bowls were left to sit until room temperature was reached. Density can be calculated by mass/volume. ? = m/V. The density of saltwater is greater than the density of fresh water. The density of fresh water is greater than the density of cooking oil. We can layer these liquids. The salt water goes in first. Next, is one cup of oil. Freshwater is slowly poured in. The oil slows the decent of the freshwater so it doesnít pour into the saltwater part of the glass and mix. The oil rises to the top of the freshwater. The glass cylinder is now layered. Saltwater, a small line of purple where the fresh and salt water mixed, freshwater and oil are the layers. How many layers of different substances can you get? Salina in a Garden - making salt from sea water
An experiment in making sea salt using the wind and sun on Anglesey July/August 2010. The sea water was taken from Cemlyn Bay and evaporated in a back garden in shallow plastic trays. As each group of trays evaporated the remaining sea water was transfered into half the number of trays, reducing from 8 trays to 4, then 2 and finally a pre-crystaliser tray (where calcium salt came out of solution, prior to the salt (NaCL) being crystalised in the final tray. As the salt was harvested the brine was passed up the system and fresh sea water added to the first group of eight trays. In this way sea water with a low percentage of salt is concentrated to a saturated salt solution when salt crystals can be made.
