Hamza Yusuf reminds us that a lot of Muslims, including new converts to islam, are sometimes under the impression that men should be wearing a "thobe" "galabeya" etc. as a sunnah. But, the truth of the matter is that there is no traditional prescribed form of "dress" that must be followed. The only thing that is required is to not wear tight fitting clothing and to cover the "Awrah" for men and women alike. You can wear a thobe there's nothing wrong with that, but to claim men should be walking around in thobes all around town is not accurate from a historical perspective - wa allahu a3lam.

Saddam STORYLINE Saddam Hussein attended the latest session of his trial on Monday despite a defence boycott, shouting "Down with Bush" as he entered the courtroom. The former Iraqi leader looked haggard, wearing a blue robe rather than the suit he has worn previously. After Saddam entered on his own, his co-defendant Barzan Ibrahim was brought in by guards as he shouted and protested, briefly scuffling with guards. (CLIENTS NOTE, THE PICTURES OF BARZAN SCUFFLING WITH GUARDS WERE NOT PROVIDED ON THE LIVE FEED) Saddam complained to the court that he was being forced to attend. The eight defendants boycotted the past sessions, refusing to work with court-appointed defence attorneys named after their own defence team walked out in protest. Saddam shouted, "Down with the agents. Down with Bush. Long live the nation!" referring to the American president, as he entered the room. He wore a blue galabeya - a traditional Arab robe - and a black jacket, a stark contrast to the tailored black suits he has worn to past sessions. Saddam's wants the replacement of the trial's new chief judge, Raouf Abdel-Rahman, a Kurd, who took over last month after his predecessor stepped down amid criticism over his handling of the trial. The defence claims that Abdel-Rahman is unfit to try the case because he was sentenced to life in absentia in the 1970s for anti-state activity. Saddam became president in 1979, but was Iraq's most powerful man for several years before that. In his first session in charge on Jan. 29, Abdel-Rahman tried to restore the authority of the court which had witnessed numerous outbursts from Saddam and Ibrahim, Iraq's former intelligence chief. The judge ejected one defence lawyer, prompting the rest to leave in protest. Saddam and three co-defendants were also allowed to leave or forcibly removed, and the judge appointed replacement defence lawyers. In the following session Feb. 1, only three defendants attended; none showed up the next day. Wide of defendants and judges in court STORYLINE Saddam Hussein was forced to attend his trial on Monday, looking haggard and wearing a robe rather than his usual crisp suit as he shouted, "Down with Bush." His top co-defendant struggled with guards bringing him in and sat on the floor, his back to the judge, for much of the session. After a stormy start to the session, prosecutors put on the stand a member of Saddam's regime for the first time and produced documents trying to link the former Iraqi leader directly to torture and executions that allegedly took place in a 1982 crackdown in the Shiite town of Dujail. But the witness, Ahmed Hussein Khudayer al-Samarrai - the head of Saddam's presidential office from 1984-1991 and then again from 1995 until the fall of the regime in April 2003 - insisted he knew nothing about the events in Dujail. "I am not fit to be a witness in this case," al-Samarrai told the court, bringing a smile from Saddam. Saddam complained to the court that he was being forced to attend. The eight defendants boycotted the past sessions, refusing to work with court-appointed defence attorneys named after their own defence team walked out in protest. Saddam shouted, "Down with the agents. Down with Bush. Long live the nation!" referring to the American president, as he entered the room. Lebanese actress Nicol Saba and her "Belly Dance Teachers"[!] give us a great laugh in this ridiculous comedy song 'Orosy Wa Rosina!' ['Belly Dance And Let Us Dance!']. This is from the crazy SHA'ABI [People's Music, like an Arabic Rap Music] cinema film 'Keset El Hai El Sha3bi' ['Inner City Story'] 2007. The film is a colourful zany comedy about trying to get some money together so Nichol Saba's character has to learn to Belly Dance and Folk Dance to win the Alexandria Dance Festival [which of course, they do!]. The film is total escapism and really shows how imaginative Egyptians with arts in the cinema. SHA'ABI Music is an intersting cultural avenue in a lot of Arab countries. However, in Egypt, SHA'ABI is a much stronger force, SHA'ABI also tranmogrifies its political comment, satire and criticism of society and corruption. It may have also contributed to the 'Arab Spring'. Absurd SHA'ABI comedies began innocently with comedy actor Ala Wala Al Din in 'Al Nazar' [The Headmaster] and 'Abood Ala Al Hadood' ['Abood Over The Border'] but by the time Mohammed Sa'ad and 'Al Limby' opened their stall with SHA'ABI Cinema in 2002the pressure inside Egypt was already forming. SHA'ABI cinema, like the music, is social comment but because it is Egyptians and they have lived on that land for so long, they prefer to laugh troubles off rather than stress and try to rectify things directly. So SHA'ABI films mercilessly attack bad habits, poor morality, two-facedness etc. in everyday life in Egypt through satirical characterisations of everyday people; their dreams to 'get-rich-quick', etc. So, for people who are familiar with life in Egypt, these films are hilariously funny comedy of everyday situations and sleights of hand. However, on the the other hand, the rich elite tend not to appreciate SHA'ABI as it tends to mock their aspirations to be 'city folk' and enquires about where they get their money from and why they have money but most people don't...SHA'ABI films tend to make the wealthy uncomfortable with the flaunting of theatrical folk culture and low class characters asking too many indirect questions. Equally uncomfortable are the poor as they are made fun of, which they laugh with but their quality of life, experiences and fate is not so funny detatched from the relentless comedy. Hence 'The Arab Spring' may have been influenced by the anger and awareness indirectly put by popular SHA'ABI films. ORCHESTRATION This is a great short little song. It is just based on a DARBOUKA [vase drum] set of beats played with the hands with an ACCORDIAN [Western bellowed keyboard with detuned octaves - works well in Arabic Music]. The ACCORDIAN just gives a rest to the ear from the singing and drumming. The small ENSEMBLE [group of instruments/singers] gives a sense of an intimate lesson 'at home' rather than out with the orchestra. The words are totally silly and a real laugh! VIDEO The visuals are colourful. Nichol Saba is a great sport and goes along with all the zany capers here as if such madness could be possible. The outfit is so over the top and theatrical as is the man's long galabeya and striped hat popular in 1970s Egyptian Films. SHA'ABI films are wonderful as they allow Egyptian Culture to shine. The American Culture, plus Religious cultures that dominate everyday life in Egypt are suspended temporarily in SHA'ABI movies and the colourful dancing, singing and costumes of Egypt spring to life. It is really lovely to see. The filming is imaginative and gives a lot of nice shots of the dancing that don't at all fit together in real time. But that theatrical touch is part of the magic of SHA'ABI! Keset El Hai El Sha'abi is a great enjoyable hilarious satirical poke at Egyptian Society!

Originally published on October 21, 2013 Three people, including an eight-year-old girl, were killed when gunmen on a motorcycle opened fire on a wedding party outside a Coptic Christian church in Cairo on Sunday. At least 12 other people were injured according to an official from the Egyptian Health Ministry. It was not immediately clear if any of the dead were Christians. No group has yet claimed responsibility for the attack. The one of the masked attackers fired randomly as people left the church in north Cairo's Al-Warak neighborhood. The Interior Ministry said an eight-year-old girl, a woman and man were killed and nine other were injured in the shooting. A Coptic priest told Reuters that he was inside the church when the gunfire started. Priest Thomas Daoud Ibrahim said that he rushed outside and found a dead man, a dead woman and many injured. An official from the Egyptian Health Ministry confirmed the three deaths but said 12 people were injured. Ahmed al-Ansari said that four of the 12 were were in critical condition and that the number of injured could rise. Coptic Christians made up 10 percent of Egypt's 85 million people, and have for the most part coexisted peacefully with majority Sunni Muslims, despite bouts of sectarian tension, according to Reuters. However, the army's ousting of elected President Morsi on July 3 has been followed by the worst attacks on churches and Christian properties in years. Pope Tawadros has received several death threats, while several Christians have been killed. Shops, homes and businesses owned by Christians have also been targeted recently. -------------------------------------------------------- TomoNews is your daily source for top animated news. These men were selling dresses and other items from their boats to those of us on a cruise ship on the Nile Rivier. They would pitch the dresses 20 feet or more into our rooms on the ship. If you found something you likes, you would bargain and then throw money back. It is amazing that most of the items did not end up in the water.

Egypt's military ousted the country's first democratically elected president Mohammed Morsi on Wednesday, calling for a new presidential election to take place. Celebrations erupted in Cairo's Tahrir Square, where hundreds of thousands of Egyptians had been calling for Morsi's resignation which was imposed by the countries armed forces. Army Chief of Staff General Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, speaking on national television, announced the new President as Supreme Constitutional Council Head Adly Mansour and the suspension of the constitution. A statement on Morsi's presidential office Twitter account quoted Morsi as calling the military's move "a full coup categorically rejected by all the free men of our nation." Shortly before the announcement, soldiers backed by armoured vehicles deployed around the Presidential Palace and along key streets and bridges in Cairo. The military said it was imposing a travel ban on Morsi and key members of the Muslim Brotherhood, an influential political movement which Morsi's Freedom and Justice Party was strongly linked to. Morsi assumed office on June 30, 2012 after mass protests toppled the government of then-President Hosni Mubarak, who ruled from 1981 to 2011. Morsi is currently in an undisclosed location.
