Just Add Watson: Episode 1 - transforming the apparel industry with AI
Shimmy Technologies is a Brooklyn, New York-based startup focused on helping the apparel industry embrace automation and the use of artificial intelligence (AI) to make workflows more efficient, lower manufacturing costs, and meet the increasing demand for custom clothing in the market. Sarah Krasley, the CEO and creative force behind Shimmy Technologies, has a background in industrial design and experience in helping automotive designers look at a car’s shape and form using simulation technology. The inspiration for her startup comes from working with automotive designers and watching them sculpt the hood of a car; what if we could take the same principles and apply it to designing for the human body while balancing the visual aspects of design to produce custom apparel. Sarah chose to begin by focusing on swimwear because creating a perfect fit provided the greatest challenge. Sarah and her startup Shimmy Technologies were able to leverage IBM Cloud technology credits provided by the IBM Global Entrepreneur program to help bring her innovative solution to market faster. How To Make A T-Shirt From Design To Manufacturing Process
In this video I show you how to make a t-shirt from the design to manufacturing process. It starts with designing a shirt, pattern making, sewing, cutting and then goes into large production manufacturing. More from Bella Canvas: http://bit.ly/2t9Guo6 When starting a clothing line it's important to know the process, and this video is a great way to learn what it takes to create a t-shirt from scratch. Sign up to the newsletter and receive free downloads to help grow your business + enter to win upcoming giveaways: http://bit.ly/Apparel-Download The following steps can be applied to make any product, so feel free to jot down notes and reference this section for future use. Step 1: T-Shirt Design The first step to making a t-shirt involves the design sketch. Create a sketch that depicts the angles and details you'd like the final shirt to have. It doesn't have to be super fancy, as long as you can show what you need. Designing a shirt with the end goal in mind helps the pattern maker know what you are going for. Thanks you Torey Lewitz for joining us. Step 2: Pattern Making Once the designs are completed, you will consult with a pattern maker to bring your clothing line to life. The pattern maker will take your designs and create “patterns” which are the pieces that will be cut and sewn together. Step 3: Sample Cutting Once the patterns are completed, they are printing on a plotter that creates the outline for the sample cutter. The person in charge of cutting the sample will follow the guides to ensure the pieces are cut to the right specifications. Castle Notches allow the person in charge of sewing to close the product up right. Step 4: Sewing The T-Shirt After the fabric is cut out, it is ready to be sewn. The cut pieces are now the shape of the patterns and multiple sewing machines are used to finish the design. The final outcome is hopefully what you envisioned. But more than likely it won’t be the final fit, so you will repeat the process until you are happy with the size, fit and shape of your apparel line. Step 5: Mass Production Cutting As soon as the shirt or apparel design you created is approved, the patterns are finalized and sent into the production process. John Chacon Head Of Production walks us through his process. Step 6: Mass Production Sewing Once the pieces are all cut out, they are sent to the sewing factory. The factory is given the cut fabric and the head of production is in charge of making sure everyone knows what their role is. Step 7: Order Fulfillment/ Clothing Line Distribution The last step in this video is the order fulfillment and distribution of the finished clothing. As a clothing business you also have to think about how you will provide quicker shipping, handle returns and manage employees. Randy Pinter Head of Warehouse Distribution drops the knowledge on what it takes to run this facility. In this episode of The Ultimate Fashion History, we'll see how the burgeoning Nouveau Riche of The Industrial Revolution responded their new wealthy with ridiculously over-adorned, Gigot-sleeved dresses in the 1830s, and then crashed down to earth with a more 'sympathetic' silhouette in response to the trend towards social reform in the 1840s. Enjoy.

Unravel: The final resting place of your cast-off clothing
This is the final resting place of your cast-off clothing When people in the West throw their clothes away, their cast-offs often go on a journey east, across the oceans, to India’s industrial interior. From the Kutch District of western India to the northern city of Panipat, garment recyclers turn into yarn the huge bales of clothes that come from people and places distinctly strange. With little exposure to Western culture other than the Discovery Channel, the garment recyclers rely on their imagination and the rumours that travel with the cast-offs to create an an intriguing perspective on the West. Fashion & Intellectual Property
Fashion is a three trillion dollar a year industry with a 100% participation rate. So how do companies like Louis Vuitton, Ralph Lauren, Gucci, and Christian Louboutin promote their brands globally while still protecting their designs? To what extent are creators, from individual fashion designers to million-dollar brands, protected under intellectual property law? How do you balance protecting IP with fostering innovation? Lawyers, law professors, and industry experts discuss the role of intellectual property in the fashion industry, explaining three recent cases that continue to spark debate on design protection in the United States. Using 3D printing to change the fashion industry | Enterprising Australians
When Charne met a 3D printing group at a local showcase while she was at uni, she had a lightbulb moment. What if you could use 3D printing to create durable clothes with no waste, which you could wear over and over for a long time? What if these clothes fit you so perfectly and were styled so timelessly that you wouldn’t need to replace them? As many of you know, my primary line of business is Fashion design. I've been in this industry for about 13 years now. I am a current co-founder and co-owner of Vie-Riche Paris, as well as Design director at Maxima Apparel, Which houses my brand, Black Pyramid (Chris Brown's line) and also Hudson Outerwear. With that said, I recently took a work trip to China, where basically all of our development happens. People tend to take for granted the amount of work that goes behind a single garment, and I wanted to take a moment to highlight just that, with the help of a little bit of a behind the scenes video of my recent trip to China. Here's a typical breakdown of the usual process (Normal industry standard is 6-9 months....Our standard, 2-3 months, Tis why we are considered the Urban ZARA): To start off, our company is composed of about 140 employees between our NYC office and our China offices. Step 1: Concept & Design (My main role). Step 2: Design hand-off process. Once a design (or batch of designs) is approved, Us designers must break down the art (if any) on the garment, and provide our Technical design team with all details pertaining the art; a. A cad with art placement sized in the right proportion. Pantone numbers for every color in the art, and also suggested/intended form of embelishment. Step 3: Merchandising process for each and every style. This entails establishing which fabrics will be used, as well as form of embelishment (print, embroidery, patchwork, sublimation, etc.) and lastly which of our 10+ factories the specific style will be assigned to. Depending on the Step 4: Technical Design. Our Tech team will take every single style and create a multi-page breakdown for it. This is the blueprint of the garment. It details everything from fabric, to colors, to exact measurements for every single aspect of the item, as well as construction. Step 5: Our Tech Packs are then uploaded on to a server where we manually enter each style by style. On this system, every detail is also manually entered and here we assign pricing and a status log is created and followed through up until delivery of the product to our warehouse. Step 6: Sourcing for sampling. Our team in China dissects each and every item and goes out and sources our requested fabrics in specific colors/quality standards. They also source trims and any new kind of technique we request. You'll see some of this in my video below. Step 7: Sampling process. The factory creates a pattern, and using our Tech pack, they create our sample for each style. This sample is then sent out to us for inspection/commenting. Step 8: Sample review: We collaboratively review each sample and make comments on each one for our factories to implement for production. Sometimes we will request a rushed updated sample if the item requires a major change, which is typically delivered to us within a week or so. Step 9: Our samples are then handed to our sales team (One to two sales people in each region, including one Europe rep). The sales team spends the next 3-4 weeks going to stores and trade shows to collect pre-orders from all of our accounts as well as any potential new accounts. Step 10: We then asses our total pre-order sales numbers and create a 'buy' for each and every style, which we then submit to the factory for production. Our administrative team is responsible for manually entering each and every order into our system. Step 11: Production. You'll see some of this in my video. Industry standard: 90 days. Our standard: 7-30 days, depending on different variables. Step 12: Goods are inspected, packed and shipped to our warehouse in China. Step 13: Once the goods are ready to ship, our Admin team contacts each and every store that pre-ordered and confirms delivery of their order. Their order is then picked, packed and shipped directly from china to their store within 2 business days. Step 14: You, the consumer, buys it. Step 15: Repeat :) By the time this item goes on your body, it has been touched by over 100 people, and collectively, hundreds of hours have been put into the process. And thanks to our speed to market motto, we are also able to give you guys trend-relevant, innovative, high quality goods EVERY SINGLE MONTH, at a very reasonable price! It is why our three brands are preferred over all other brands in our sector. But don't take my word for it. Next time you are out at some nightclub or retail store, pay close attention to what people are wearing. I promise you that you will see our 3 brands more prominently than any other :) Thank you for taking the time to read this and appreciate the process. Hope you enjoyed and don't forget to share and subscribe to my Channel!

A new textiles economy: Redesigning fashion's future
Ellen MacArthur and Stella McCartney co-launched the Ellen MacArthur Foundation’s latest report A new textiles economy: Redesigning fashion's future on November 28, 2017. The report, created by the Circular Fibres Initiative which launched in May this year, calls for the fashion industry to adopt this new vision and create cross industry collaborations to achieve it. Clothes are an everyday necessity, and for many an important expression of individuality. Yet the industry’s current take-make-dispose model is the root cause of many environmental impacts and substantial economic value loss. Every second, the equivalent of one garbage truck of textiles is landfilled or burned. An estimated USD 500 billion value is lost every year due to clothing that’s barely worn and rarely recycled. If nothing changes, by 2050 the fashion industry will use up a quarter of the world’s carbon budget. As well as being wasteful, the industry is polluting: clothes release half a million tonnes of microfibres into the ocean every year, equivalent to more than 50 billion plastic bottles. Microfibres are likely impossible to clean up and can enter food chains. Find out more about the initiative's ongoing work here: tiny.cc/fibres.

3D Printed Clothing - The Liberation Collection - Fashion Innovations and Sustainable Fashion NYFW
The most of Julia Daviy's collection of 3D-printed clothes called The Liberation Collection being printed on the industrial largeformat FDM 3D printers using TPU materials. She is also experimenting with flexible resin and SLA technology which permits her to print complex design shapes easily with almost no post-processing. For Julia, her large printing format means a minimum of handwork and postprocessing, with the highest level quality of 3d printed fashion in the industry. She singlehandedly produces all three stages of 3D printing herself. Including designing the pieces from scratch. Printing her pieces using large-scale technology, mainly using 2 technologies of 3d printing - FDM and SLA,and assembling her clothing pieces using the tech of manual 3D printing, all without threads and glues. Sustainable Fashion Festival Comes To Cambridge
The impact that the fashion industry is having on the environment is being highlighted more and more in the mainstream media. Clothing production is the second largest industrial polluter and documentaries such as Stacey Dooley’s ‘Fashion dirty secrets’ have further highlighted the need to perhaps consider a different, sustainable, approach to clothing. Now, Cambridge Carbon footprint are launching the first Sustainable fashion festival in Cambridge that will include talks from industry experts, clothes swaps and upscaling workshops. We spoke with Julie Kervadec, who left the fashion industry to start her own sustainable nightwear brand to find out more about the event at the St.Barnabas Church on Mill Road on Saturday the 17th of November.

Emerald Cup 2017 - Stop #3 - Vital Hemp Clothing
At our third stop in the Emerald Cup of 2017 we talk with Ron from Vital Hemp about his line of hemp clothing, and how he arrived in the industry after teaching History of Film as a professor in Los Angeles California. From his start on the boardwalk of Venice in ’03, he has since made many connections in the green business’s of San Francisco California, Denver, and Washington. Vital Hemp is currently open for business in their own store located on Main Street in Santa Monica California. Hemp used to be widely used in many places around the world for the production of food to textiles. Hemp cloth is not only up to 5 times stronger than cotton, but will grow softer and breathe freer as they are worn in. Though a bit more costly than other fabrics, the small impact it has on our environment seems worth it. Pesticide use is reduced greatly as the hemp plant does not need them to survive, which keeps the poison out of our skies, and off our clothing. More so, the cultivation of the plant does not deplete the soil it is grown in as other plants do, making it a great rotation crop for our farmers. The hope and goal is to return the hemp industry to the United States so that we may legally grow the plant here at home. It is currently shipped in from across sea’s, or our northern border of Canada, from places that have been harvesting the crop to make everyday necessities for many years; just like we used to before the changing of the law years ago. By supporting the hemp industry through Vital Hemp, we may see that dream achieved, and the world begin to become a safer, cleaner place. Check them out at VitalHemp.com, and read about the Hemp Industry here. Join the fight for our planet. Together we can make a change. Up next we talk with business owner Willy Nillway about Lightwave Science, a company involved in the measurement of both potency and moisture content present within your buds. Stay tuned as we make our way through the crazy crowds of the 2017 Emerald Cup celebration.
