For some, it is a time to head home and for others, a chance to go visit somewhere special. One Muslim on a trip to Turkey, explained: "We specifically came to Istanbul from the Netherlands, in order to feel the unique atmosphere of Ramadan here." Ramadan's duration is a lunar month. Wide shot of police outside Synod House STORYLINE: A female professor led an Islamic prayer service on Friday with men in the congregation despite sharp criticism from Muslim religious leaders in the Middle East who complained that it violated centuries of tradition. Amina Wadud, a professor of Islamic studies at Virginia Commonwealth University, led the service at Synod House at the Cathedral of St. John the Divine, an Episcopal church in Manhattan. Some Islamic scholars have said they were aware of a few other mixed-gender prayer meetings led by women, mostly in the West, but they are rare. About 80 to 100 people attended the service, and the group appeared evenly divided between men and women. Most women wore the traditional Muslim headscarf and long, flowing robes. The event was meant to draw attention to the inequality of women in Muslim spiritual life and Muslim life in general, according to Asra Q. Nomani, an author and former Wall Street Journal reporter who was an organiser of the prayer. Some critics have accused Nomani of using the event to publicise a book she has written about women and Islam. Three New York mosques had refused to host the service, according to Nomani. It was moved to Synod House after a site that had earlier been selected for the service, an art gallery, received a bomb threat. There was a brief outburst from some protesters outside the building at the start of the service, but they were kept from entering by a heavy police presence. One young US-born, bearded activist, who only gave his name as Nussrah, said Wadud was not representative of Muslims. He said the event was "blasphemy, and the penalty for blasphemy is death". The call to prayer was led by an American Muslim of Egyptian descent, Suehyla el-Attar, who spoke in accented Arabic and didn't wear the traditional headscarf. Organisers said the service wasn't meant as a protest against Muslim traditions. Muslim worshippers perform prayers around the Kaaba

00:37
Muslims worshippers perform prayers around the Kaaba, Islam's holiest shrine, at the Grand Mosque in Saudi Arabia's holy city of Mecca, prior to the start of the annual Hajj pilgrimage in the holy city. The hajj, expected to draw more than two million pilgrims to Mecca this year, represents a key rite of passage for Muslims and a massive logistical challenge for Saudi authorities, with colossal crowds cramming into relatively small holy sites.

She would be stoned, she will be chopped into pieces, because what she is doing is blasphemy. This is the same law in Judaism and Christianism and Islam, no difference. The penalty for blasphemy is death, and this is what this woman needs, period." 18. Mid shot of people outside church STORYLINE A female professor led Islamic Friday prayers to a mixed-gender congregation in New York City, despite sharp criticism from Muslim religious leaders in the Middle East who complained that it violated centuries of tradition. Amina Wadud, a professor of Islamic Studies at Virginia Commonwealth University, led the two-hour service at Synod House at the Cathedral of St. John the Divine, an Anglican church in Manhattan. About 80 to 100 people attended the service, and the group appeared evenly divided between men and women. Most women wore the traditional Muslim headscarf and long, flowing robes. There was a brief outburst from some protesters outside the building at the start of the service, but they were kept from entering by a heavy police presence. Three New York mosques had refused to host the service, organisers said. It was moved to Synod House after a site that had earlier been selected for the service, an art gallery in downtown Manhattan, received a bomb threat. The call to prayer was led by an American Muslim of Egyptian descent, Suehyla el-Attar, who spoke in accented Arabic and didn't wear the traditional headscarf. Organisers said the service wasn't meant as a protest against Muslim traditions. "It was always meant as a spiritual worship opportunity, and it's doing so in an equal space for women and men," said Ahmed Nassef, whose group Muslim WakeUp! helped to organize the service. The sheik of Cairo's Al-Azhar mosque, one of the world's top Islamic institutions, said Islam permits women to lead other women in prayer but not a congregation with men in it. Abdul-Aziz al-Khayyat, a former minister of religious affairs in Jordan and a Muslim cleric, also said it would be forbidden under Islamic doctrine, and that the prayers of men who participated would not count. We were alienated in the thought process, alienated in the education process, alienated in our own bodies. There has bee too much alienation." 6. Mid of Suleiman Tayab Deng sitting on the floor 7. SOUNDBITE (Arabic) Suleiman Tayab Deng, Imam of the Central Mosque in Juba "We will live just as Muslims do in many other nations, for example in Kenya, Uganda, Nigeria, just like in Britain, isn't this so, even in France they have Muslims. Islam is not exclusive to the Sudan, here in the south we live, this one is a Muslim, this one is a Christian, this one is a pagan, and this one has no religion at all and we all live in one home, not just in a nation, but in the same home, therefore there is no fear if we separate, and if there is separation it will be better for us." 8. Wide shot of Muslim worshippers praying STORYLINE Hundreds of Muslims gathered at the central mosque in downtown Juba, in Southern Sudan for Friday prayers, as the historic referendum on the future of the region entered its final day. The atmosphere was peaceful, and afterwards the Imam of the Mosque said that many Muslims supported separation from their northern neighbours. "We support the idea of separation because we have lived many years alienated. We were alienated in the thought process, alienated in the education process, alienated in our own bodies," Suleiman Tayab Deng. Southerners, who mainly define themselves as African, have long resented their underdevelopment, accusing the northern Arab-dominated government in Khartoum of taking their oil revenues without investing in the south. Southerners - mainly animists or Christians - were also angered by attempts by the northern dominated government to impose Islamic law. Many of Southern Sudan's Muslims belong to the southern Dinka and Nuer tribes. Meanwhile, voters continued to trickle into polling stations on Friday to cast ballots in southern Sudan's historic referendum that is likely to result in independence for a region the size of France. An official with Southern Sudan's ruling Sudan People's Liberation Movement told journalists on Wednesday that nearly 2.3 million (m) voters had cast ballots so far, surpassing the 60 percent of registered voters needed to ensure the outcome's validity. Some two million (m) people died in a two-decade war between north and south Sudan that ended in 2005 with a peace agreement that allowed for the referendum on independence. The week-long vote has been jubilant, though the future of the desperately poor region remains uncertain. How To Attend a Muslim Friday Prayer Service (Jum’ah)

03:25
Watch more How to Celebrate Ramadan videos: http://www.howcast.com/videos/217206-How-To-Attend-a-Muslim-Friday-Prayer-Service-Jumah Step 1: Find a Friday prayer service Use Muslim acquaintances or a Website to find a Friday prayer service near you. Most are held around lunchtime. Tip Friday prayer services do not always happen in a mosque. University students often arrange Friday prayers in an empty hall or auditorium. Mosques in urban areas host prayers in satellite locations, such as downtown office buildings or even churches. Step 2: Purify your intention As with all acts in Islam, take a quiet moment to purify your intention, affirming that you plan to attend Friday prayers for God’s sake alone. Tip While Friday is usually a holiday in Muslim-majority countries, it’s a regular workday elsewhere, and some men are not able to attend as a result. Do your best to fit Friday prayers into your work schedule. Step 3: Take a shower or bath If you are able and you have time, take a shower or bath on Friday morning, as this practice was recommended by the Prophet Muhammad, who advised his followers to keep clean. Step 4: Dress in clean, modest clothes Dress in clean, modest clothes. For men, this means no shorts. For women, this means covering the arms and legs, avoiding tight or revealing clothing, and bringing along a headscarf. Tip Cologne is recommended for men, but perfume for women should be avoided. Step 5: Remove your shoes When entering the mosque or prayer area, remove your shoes. This is the moment of truth for your socks! Step 6: Enter prayer area with right foot first Enter the prayer area with your right foot first. If the mosque is segregated according to gender, women should enter the women’s area, and men should enter the men’s area. Tip If you have small children, you may prefer to leave them at home. If you need to, however, you can bring them. Children of all ages are a common sight at Friday prayers. If a child is very disruptive, or if a baby can’t stop crying, however, you may have to leave with them. Step 7: Offer voluntary prayer If you are Muslim, offer two cycles of voluntary prayer, known as tahyatul masjid salah, which means literally, 'the prayer to greet the mosque.' Tip If you are not Muslim, take a moment to sit quietly and offer your own prayers. Step 8: Sit next to other congregants on the floor Sit next to other congregants on the floor. Choose the available space closest to the front of the room. In other words, the front rows should be filled first, particularly because the back rows should be left open for latecomers. Step 9: Listen to adhan Listen as a fellow congregant gives the adhan, or call to prayer. This means the Friday prayer service has begun; refrain from talking at this point. Step 10: Sit quietly & listen to imam Sit quietly and listen while the imam, or prayer leader, offers a sermon, or khutbah. The first half the khutbah is the longest, followed by a brief period when the imam will sit down and offer silent prayers. Then he will stand again to deliver the shorter final section of the sermon. Tip A sermon will always open and close with words in Arabic. Hopefully, the language of the sermon itself will be one you understand. If not, be patient and ask someone near you for a translation when it is over. Step 11: Listen to iqaamah After the sermon, a man will stand to give the iqaamah, a shortened version of the call to prayer, which indicates the prayer itself is about to commence. Step 12: Line up shoulder to shoulder Stand up and move so you are standing shoulder to shoulder with the people on your left and right, forming a straight line that faces the qibla, or direction pointing to Mecca. Your shoulders, arms or feet can be lightly touching other people’s. Tip If you are not Muslim, ask someone where you can sit to observe the prayers. Generally, non-Muslims should not join in the prayer. Step 13: Perform salat Perform two cycles of the ritual prayer, or salat, following along with the imam. Step 14: Greet other people When the prayer is over, be sure to greet the people praying on either side of you when they are finished, either by shaking their hands and saying, 'May Allah accept your prayers,' or by simply smiling. Step 15: Make a charitable contribution If you wish, make a charitable contribution as you leave. Boxes for contributions are generally available near the exit. Did You Know? The Prophet Muhammad was known for giving short sermons, but don’t expect everyone to follow that lead—some sermons can last more than an hour.

ISRAEL: RAMADAN: 200,000 MUSLIMS ATTEND PRAYERS AT AL-AQSA MOSQUE

02:32
English/Nat On the last Friday in Ramadan over than 200,000 Moslem worshipers attended prayers at the Al-Aqsa mosque in East Jerusalem - its Islam's third holiest site. Israel beefed up security in Jerusalem, in an attempt to head off clashes during the prayers. 1,700 police officers had been put on duty in the city. The prayers come a day before the secular calendar anniversary of the Hebron mosque massacre. On February 25, 1994, Jewish settler Baruch Goldstein shot dead 29 Palestinians during Ramadan Friday prayers at Hebron in the West Bank. Survivors beat Goldstein to death. A group of left wing Israelis accompanied by tens of Palestinians marched through the streets of Hebron headed in the direction of the mosque, in commemoration of the massacre. Meanwhile several hundred Palestinians in Hebron prayed outside the Mosque, due to the limited number of worshipers allowed inside the cave. Many Palestinians aren't able to attend the prayers at Islam's third holiest site, because of the Israeli security clampdown which has sealed the borders of the West Bank and Gaza Strip. The clampdown came after two Islamic suicide bombers killed 21 Israelis near Tel Aviv. Kashgar Id Kah Mosque | Amazing Uyghur Muslim Prayers during Ramadan in Kashgar, Xinjiang

Watch as tens of thousands of Uyghur Muslims fill the Id Kah Mosque in Kashgar, Xinjiang for prayers as they break Ramadan fast. Check out my highly-reviewed travel guide to the region here (and download a free chapter!): https://www.xjtravelguide.com ---------------------------------- For those unaware, Eid ul-Fitr marks the end of the month-long religious fasting called "Ramadan".  For the entire month a fast is supposed to be observed from sun-up to sun-down until the final day when they hold a celebration that seems to me to be as big in their culture as Christmas is in America.  People travel long distances to see family, visit friends, and in many cases to visit an important mosque. So when we woke up that morning after Ramadan, we knew there would be a lot of people, but that still didn't adequately prepare us for what we saw.  We arrived at Kashgar's Id Kah Mosque at 8am to find people from every direction of the city converging on the small yellow mosque which seemed to swallow thousands of them every second. The only sound we heard were soft footsteps and one small boy trying to sell carpets to those who only brought plastic bags to kneel on.  For one full hour the masses never stopped coming and the mosque never stopped swallowing. I later found out that the mosque can hold up to 25,000 people at once, but I figure there's got to be some huge fire code violation going on there.

The 22nd annual Festival of Faiths | "Compassion: Shining like the Sun" | April 19-22, 2017 - Louisville, KY | http://festivaloffaiths.org How do Muslims pray? Ingrid Mattson, a leading Muslim theologian in the West, describes the spiritual meaning of the words, movements and cycles of the Islamic canonical prayer. For one in every four human beings in the world, the five prayers (salah) are part of their daily ritual. Prayer is one of the five tenets of Islam, the others being: the testimony of faith, charity, fasting and performing pilgrimage. Dr. Ingrid Mattson is a leading Muslim religious figure, a professor of Islamic Studies and expert on the Qur’an. She was elected vice president and then president of the Islamic Society of North America, the first woman to serve in either position. In that capacity, a 2010 New York Times article called her “the most noticed figure among American Muslim women.” As a professor at Hartford Seminary, she developed and directed the first accredited graduate program for Muslim chaplains in America. Currently, Mattson teaches at the University of Western Ontario. To support more content like this, consider donating to the Center for Interfaith Relations, who hosts the annual Festival of Faiths. Muslims pray 5 times a day to ensure a personal connection with and remembrance of Allah (swt) throughout the day. They pray facing the Holy Kaaba in the city of Makkah. Facing this Kaaba is simply for uniformity and homogeneity in the prayers of all Muslims around the world and not as an act of worship to the mosque itself. #iqracartoonurdu #iqracartoonbangla #iqracartoon
