High-stakes poker players get to visit some of the best places. Paul Phua Poker asked Steve O’Dwyer, Rui Cao, Sam Trickett, Koray Aldemir, Timofey “Trueteller” Kutnetsov and Lucas Greenwood to name their top hotspots.
It must be a hard life being a high stakes poker globetrotter, jet-setting from one glamorous destination to another in search of the juiciest games and the next big score. Talk about living the poker dream!
Steve O'Dwyer: Poker-wise, l’d have to say Barcelona is my favourite. It’s just a great spot to play poker. The weather’s great always when they run the tournaments there in August. And the hotel is fantastic.
Rui Cao: It depends where. I think here in Montenegro we have very good, good place to visit and l like going to the beach. Maybe some, going to the boat and try to, to relax a bit on the sea.
Sam Trickett: And my favourite spot I’ve been, l mean, l’ve lived in Cape Town, it wasn’t for poker, but l lived in Cape Town for six months. That was beautiful. It’s probably my favourite place l’ve ever been. And then Ibiza, like, again, that’s not poker related. But Ibiza. l love Ibiza. l got engaged there and it’s like really nice parts of Ibiza that people don’t know, they just think it’s some party town. It’s actually some really nice places there, so. And Australia’s obviously really nice. Melbourne, the Aussie Millions, fantastic place, lovely venue. My favourite poker stop actually.
Koray Aldemir: l like Melbourne a lot. Aussie Millions. That’s a pretty nice city, actually. Maybe it’s also because it’s in January and it’s super-cold back in Europe, and in Australia it was summer. Also, Barcelona is a really nice stop, in Europe, of course. Right at the beach, l like that city a lot too. I like it here as well, Montenegro, it’s a very nice beach.
Timofey Kuznetsov: Ah, the cities l like, l think, l like Hong Kong a lot. I think it’s must, ‘must-visit’ city for people who have never been there.
Lucas Greenwood: It was not a poker deal but l was in Tel Aviv for a friend of mine’s wedding last year and that’s one of my favourite cities. And here in Montenegro, it’s my first time here but it’s really beautiful and l’ve managed to go to the beach a few times and swim in the sea and it’s been a pretty great experience.
