Climate-driven Change in the Northern Bering Sea
Chief scientist Jackie Grebmeier's May-June cruise aboard the USCGC HEALY looked at climate change and its impact on the local marine ecosystem, from the smallest creatures to those farther up the food chain. Also on board, and leading off our report, Perry Pungowiyi, a Siberian Yupik who's been noticing changes in the abundance of sea-ice, and the timing of its appearance and disappearance. See a seal census, with white-clad NOAA researchers (for camouflage) jumping from ice floe to ice floe. Hear from the researchers how a changing environment impacts all the inhabitants of the narrow ocean that stretches between Alaska and Siberia, till now one of the most productive seas in the world, and a major fishery on which the USA depends. Meet the inhabitants of this aquatic "neighborhood", as Jackie describes it, and learn what makes it tick... and change.

This Alaskan Fishing Boat Does Not Answer to Storms
Since the Northern Leader first set sail three years ago, it's never postponed a fishing trip due to bad weather. And with potentially $2 million worth of fish at stake each trip, it's understandable. From: MIGHTY SHIPS: Northern Leader http://bit.ly/2oJWD4I

Pollock Fishing in the Bering Sea, Alaska
Pelagic (mid-water) trawling for pollock fish. This is a compilation of still shot and video edited to show a typical fishing experience on this type of commercial trawler in Alaska from start to finish. Unfortunately there is no audio. This video was made in 2006 on F/V Highland Light. Pollock is a white fleshed fish used for fish sticks, fillet 'o fish, and also a main ingredient in surimi (artifical crab). Other byproducts include fishmeal (fertilizer and animal feed) and fish oil.

Northern Belle: A hero's last call
The captain of a sinking 75-foot fishing boat died after making a dramatic mayday call that saved his three crewmembers in the Gulf of Alaska. "His actions, based on everything I've learned, saved his crew. Had he not gone into the cabin and made the distress call, the outcome of this would have been very dire." 47 Men Shipwrecked In Alaska With Rescue Hours Away | Disasters At Sea
Alaska Ranger was a fishing trawler on the way to fishing water near Alaska when the ship started to flood and started sinking rapidly. The mayday message was sent out quickly, but the ship was far away from any rescue teams, and it would take helicopters at least two hours to reach the ship. By this time the ship would have already vanished far beneath the ocean's surface. How long would the 47 man crew cope in the cold water? Obama creates "resilience area" for Bering Sea
(9 Dec 2016) US President Barack Obama took action on Friday to give Alaska Native villages more of a say in the federal management of marine resources in the Bering Sea. The White House announced that Obama had used an executive order to create a Northern Bering Sea Climate Resilience Area which will focus "locally tailored" protecting marine resources. The order permanently bars oil exploration 40,300 square miles of Norton Basin and St. Matthew Island, two areas already recognized as important hunting areas. It also will boost federal consultation with Alaska tribes and 39 communities that line the west coast of Alaska. The area within the newly created resilience area covers 112,300 square miles. It supports what may be the world's largest annual marine mammal migration of bowhead and beluga whales, Pacific walrus, ice seals and migratory birds. Residents of coastal villages dependent on marine resources have urged that their views be heard as the Arctic is affected by climate warming, expanding ship traffic and possible offshore petroleum drilling. The White House executive order establishes a task force with village representation which will consult on federal management activities in the area and work to protect cultural and subsistence activities. The order elevates Alaska Native comment on projects such as a port access route study nearing completion by the US Coast Guard. With increased shipping, the agency is working on vessel traffic control measures through the Bering Strait, the choke point between North America and Asia. The executive order directs the US Coast Guard to give consideration to community recommendations regarding sensitive areas to be avoided because of their importance for hunting or other subsistence activities. The Baltic Sea Anomaly | UFO At The Bottom Of The Sea
The baltic sea anomaly | UFO at the bottom of the sea. The Baltic Sea anomaly is a 60-metre diameter circular rock-like formation on the floor of the northern Baltic Sea. It was discovered by Peter Lindberg, Dennis Åsberg and their Swedish "Ocean X" diving team in June 2011. To date, we have explored less than five percent of the ocean. The ocean is the lifeblood of Earth, covering more than 70 percent of the planet's surface, driving weather, regulating temperature, and ultimately supporting all living organisms. Studies suggests there are as many as eight undiscovered whale and dolphin species, 10 undescribed marine reptiles, and thousands of sponges, crustaceans, algae, plants, and other species still to be found. The average depth of the ocean is about 12,100 feet. The deepest part of the ocean is called the Challenger Deep and is located beneath the western Pacific Ocean in the southern end of the Mariana Trench, Challenger Deep is approximately 36,200 feet deep. So with this knowledge we should keep an open mind about what could be laying at the bottom of the sea.

Crossing the North Sea Alone- Wintertime. Challenge completed! Pt 1.
So here it is, my biggest challenge in my sailing career! Sailing solo across the North Sea from Haugesund, Norway- to Lerwick on Shetland the 26th of January. This made me and Sigurd the first ones ever to have crossed the North Sea solo to join the Up Helly Aa- festival on these beautiful islands... Some say crazy, I say crazy not to give it a try. This is how we develop and grow. Staying safe all the time wont get you anywhere. The video was hard to make. Its all about having the effort to pick up the camera when you really dont want to, and most important, trying to make a story out of it.. Seasick, cold and wet every minute. I loved it. Its all about making a plan and follow it. Theres only plan A. You dont think about plan B before you are forced to! Stay on your course and hold it steady! Youve might heard the words often attributed to Mr. Winston Churchill: "If your going through hell, keep walking" ;) Best regards Erik Music: Paddys Green Shamrock Shore/ Peat in the Creel Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/nobullshitjustsailing/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/erikaanderaa/ Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/user?u=3146656&ty=h Linkedin: https://www.linkedin.com/in/erik-aanderaa-552953a4?trk=nav_responsive_tab_profile

World Landbridge (5) - Bering Strait & Siberia
With the very intitiation of NAWAPA in North America, politically and economically, the land connection of the continents of America and Eurasia is placed on the agenda. The connection via the Bering Strait, a project that was first proposed in the middle of the 19th century, would lead highways and rail track through a tunnel underneath the icy ocean waters, and would include a gas pipeline, as well as power transmission and communications lines. Construction of the Bering Strait Tunnel is an active agenda of many of the most important nations in that region. One of the international specialists on planning and constructing infrastructure projects of this scale and kind, is Dr. Hal Cooper. Dr. Cooper has inspired and performed extensive feasibility studies on the rail and tunnel project for the Bering Strait, the rail connections within Alaska and Canada, as well as numerous other projects. Dr. Sergei Cherkasov is a further international specialist for such projects. Cherkasov works at the State Geological Vernadsky Museum in Moscow, which is part of the Russian Academy of Sciences. He is a leading expert on questions of raw materials in the scientific tradition of Vladimir Vernadsky and Dmitri Mendeleyev, and is active in several international working groups on surveying undiscovered mineral deposits.

Lessons from the Galaxy: Tragedy and Courage on the Bering Sea
https://www.johnsabella.com/detail.lasso?title=650712 It was just another day at the office on the Bering Sea on the afternoon of October 20, 2002, with 20-foot seas and 30-knot winds. There were 25 men and a woman aboard the 190-foot freezer longliner Galaxy when the crew detected smoke on multiple decks. Within four minutes, the first violent explosion rocked the vessel and blew three members of the starboard fire team through the gear setting hatch at the stern and 30 feet through the air, into the frigid water. Even as he exhorted his crew to focus their minds on survival, Captain Dave Shoemaker, the ex-Marine and devout Christian, knew they were too far from civilization for credible hope of rescue. With his radios melting off the wheelhouse bulkheads and most of his survival gear consumed in flames, Shoemaker battled insurmountable odds and his own certainty that he and his crewmates were about to die. Today, he uses the term divine intervention to explain the VHF contact that enabled all but three of them to survive their journey to the gates of Hell and back. Now, hear the story straight from Captain Shoemaker's lips. It's a narrative every seaman should hear, and heed. Lessons from the Galaxy offers incontrovertible proof that safety training is a critical aspect of vessel operations, because it can happen to you. This is an educational DVD that will make your crew sit up and take notice.

Alaska Pollock Fishing full documentary - What's Trending Now ! Reshare
The Alaska pollock or walleye pollock (Gadus chalcogrammus, formerly Theragra chalcogramma) is an aquatic fish types of the cod household Gadidae. Alaska pollock is a semipelagic education fish widely dispersed in the North Pacific with biggest concentrations found in the eastern Bering Sea. While belonging to the very same family members as the Atlantic pollock, the Alaska pollock is not a participant of the very same Pollachius genus. Alaska pollock was long put in its very own genus Theragra, but much more current study has revealed it is instead carefully related to the Atlantic cod and ought to be returned to category Gadus in which it was originally described. Furthermore, Norwegian pollock (Theragra finnmarchica), an unusual fish of Norwegian waters, is most likely the very same varieties as the Alaska pollock Declaimer: I am not the original owner of this content. NOAA Scientists: Bering Sea Canyons Not Unique Habitat
A extensive survey by NOAA has determined that the Bering Sea Canyons along the Aleutian and Pribilof Islands are a not a unique environment. The findings rebuke opposing claims by NGOs that have called for a marine sanctuary be placed on the Canyons that would result in strict conservation protocols across the region.
