How To Monitor Databases on AWS Using SolarWinds Database Performance Analyzer
To learn more visit: http://bit.ly/SolarWinds_DPA See how SolarWinds Database Performance Analyzer identifies SQL Server and Oracle performance issues on the AWS Cloud. Connect with SolarWinds: THWACK IT Community: http://thwack.solarwinds.com/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/SolarWinds Twitter: https://twitter.com/solarwinds LinkedIn: http://www.linkedin.com/company/solarwinds Instagram: http://instagram.com/solarwindsinc/ Flickr: http://www.flickr.com/photos/solarwinds_inc/ TRANSCRIPT: In this video, you will learn how SolarWinds® Database Performance Analyzer or DPA for short, can be easily deployed on Amazon® Web Services, to monitor both RDS® and EC2® database servers. In addition, you will see how to identify and resolve database performance issues having the largest impact on your applications. To deploy DPA in the cloud, simply go to the Amazon marketplace and search for SolarWinds. Click on 'Continue' to deploy the AMI. Once deployed, all the additional configurations are completed through the web browser interface. The next step will be to register your database instances to be monitored by clicking on 'Register DB Instance for Monitoring.' In this case, we have already registered an instance. Let's look at DPA to find and isolate a performance problem. A customer has just called in and complained of slowness in their order entry application. To troubleshoot, first log into DPA and review the main dashboard. This will give us a high-level overview of what is happening in our environment. It’s interesting that the order entry database (PRODOE-RDS) is showing several alarms. Let's take a closer look by drilling into that database. From the trend screen, first look to the Advice tab for any critical or warning statuses. The top 2 SQL statements which are in a critical state are especially interesting. For the first statement, the adviser is telling us that there are high amounts of blocking for this insert statement on January 20th. By drilling into that day in the trend screen, we can see a 24-hour view of the top 15 SQL statements. For our insert statement, we can quickly see that it has been running every hour with a huge spike beginning in the 9:00 am hour. By drilling into that hour, we can view the blockers tab to see who is blocking this SQL statement. Here we can see that process ID of 83 has actually been blocking many other sessions for a long time. Each of these processes have spent over half an hour trying to run this insert statement. Look at the blocker details, we can quickly identify the user and see that they were performing an update to the same table. Now we can begin work on resolving this issue. Let's look at the tuning advice for our second SQL statement in Alarm. In this case, click on the 'More' link to see all of the details about the query and then review the execution plan. Notice that the adviser is suggesting several new indexes. At this point, we can decide to create and test them to see if they help improve performance. To maximize the value that DPA delivers, 24x7 monitoring is recommended. As DPA continues to monitor and collect data, the more comprehensive the analysis becomes especially when identifying trends and anomalies over time. One surprise that many of our customers have learned, is that it's not always the best idea or cost-effective to provision large database servers in the cloud. Instead, start with a small or medium-sized installation, use DPA to monitor performance, then add more resources when you need to. Test drive DPA today, just visit www.solarwinds.com/dpa.

Everything You Need to Know About MySQL Group Replication
Nuno Carvalho, Principal Software Engineer, Luis Soares, Principal Software Engineer, Oracle, deliver their talk, "Everything You Need to Know About MySQL Group Replication", on DAY 1, 2, or 3 of the Percona Live Open Source Database Conference 2017, 4/27, at Santa Clara, CA. MySQL Group Replication is a new plugin that implements an exciting extension to the proven and long standing MySQL Replication technology. It leverages advanced distributed protocols to ultimately provide to the end user features such as data replication, high availability, split brain protection and automation. It can be deployed in single-primary mode (default), in which primary fail-over is handled gracefully and automatically, or in multi-master mode, in which row level conflicts are detected and handled automatically as well. Regardless of the deployment mode, the end result is that this new addition provides a consistent and ependable replicated state machine, thus effectively enabling a fault-tolerant MySQL database service. Come and learn all about this replication plugin. At the end of the session, you will be able to understand how it works, the use cases it address, its limitations and also its roadmap ahead. Moreover, you will get to know how it fits in the overall high availability roadmap at MySQL. Take the opportunity to discuss and engage directly with the engineers behind the product about how this new plugin can help you expand your business on top of a MySQL database server. https://www.percona.com/live/17/sessions/everything-you-need-know-about-mysql-group-replication

MySQL GTID Implementation, Maintenance, and Best Practices - The Short Version
Mark Filipi (SurveyMonkey), Brian Cain (Dropbox) delivers his talk, "MySQL GTID Implementation, Maintenance, and Best Practices - The Short Version", on DAY 2 of the Percona Live Open Source Database Conference 2017, 4/26, at Santa Clara, CA. Many MySQL shops have made the transition from MySQL 5.5 to 5.6 in the last few years, but GTID (global transaction identifier) implementation has often been considered too difficult or risky a change. MySQL 5.7 is making GTID implementation easier, but it may not yet be clear why to convert. This 50 minute presentation covers GTID concepts, the process for converting from default replication, and demonstrate techniques for being successful with GTID. It covers all the essential materials from last year's 3 hour tutorial in a condensed format. Concepts - Definition - How GTIDs differ from traditional binary log positioning and advantages for converting - GTID sets and how they relate to missing transactions, slave_parallel_workers, and slave_parallel_type - Compare implementation steps between Oracle MySQL and Percona Server - server_id, server_uuid, and how a new server may cause conflicts with GTID Implementation - Converting a running master-slave topology to use GTIDs - Adding a new slave to create a 3-tier topology (master - relay - slave) - Promoting a slave to master and to relay Maintenance - Reviewing GTID sets to determine the currently writing master - Demonstrating GTID set gaps caused by parallelism versus missing transactions - Finding extra or missing transactions within the binary log - Correcting missing data using gtid_next and “faking” a transaction to correct out of sync issues New 5.7 Features and Advanced Concepts - Replication feature changes in 5.7 - Specific settings to tune or ignore for 5.6 and 5.7

AWS re:Invent 2017: How to Design a Multi-Region Active-Active Architecture (ARC319)
Many customers want a disaster recovery environment, and they want to use this environment daily and know that it's in sync with and can support a production workload. This leads them to an active-active architecture. In other cases, users like Netflix and Lyft are distributed over large geographies. In these cases, multi-region active-active deployments are not optional. Designing these architectures is more complicated than it appears, as data being generated at one end needs to be synced with data at the other end. There are also consistency issues to consider. One needs to make trade-off decisions on cost, performance, and consistency. Further complicating matters is the variety of data stores used in the architecture results in a variety replication methods. In this session, we explore how to design an active-active multi-region architecture using AWS services, including Amazon Route 53, Amazon RDS multi-region replication, AWS DMS, and Amazon DynamoDB Streams. We discuss the challenges, trade-offs, and solutions.

Kafka for DBAs
Kafka for DBAs: As DBAs and data architects, there are some things we care a lot about. For example, providing consistent performance on our OLTP databases, and making sure the ETL processes will land data correctly and on-time in the data warehouse.Business analysts care a lot about other things - for example getting the newest data to their dashboards and being able to run crazy queries really fast without anyone killing the queries for silly reasons like "performance". They also want to be able to get all the data they need without having to integrate with gazillion data stores.Apache Kafka, a distributed queue developed at LinkedIn to solve the problem of integrating databases at large scale, offers a surprising solution to all these problems. Which probably explains why it gains popularity so fast.In this session, we will explain what is Apache Kafka and why it rapidly becomes the secret weapon in the fight to keep databases sane. About Gwen Shapira: Gwen is a system architect at Confluent helping customers achieve success with their Apache Kafka implementation. She has 15 years of experience working with code and customers to build scalable data architectures, integrating relational and big data technologies. She currently specializes in building real-time reliable data processing pipelines using Apache Kafka. Gwen is an Oracle Ace Director, an author of "Hadoop Application Architectures", and a frequent presenter at industry conferences. Gwen is also a committer on the Apache Kafka and Apache Sqoop projects. When Gwen isn't coding or building data pipelines, you can find her pedaling on her bike exploring the roads and trails of California, and beyond.
IBM Data Interoperability Tools for Oracle Users 2013 10 03
Data interoperability is the function of moving data where you need it, when you need it. It is the process of copying data, also called replication, or combining data from two unique databases, also called federation. Over the past ten years IBM has been developing technologies and acquiring companies whose tools support fast, reliable replication and federation. DB2 Gold Consultant and Champion Frank Fillmore and I will deliver a presentation on IBM's data interoperability solutions targeted to an audience of current Oracle customers -- but open to anyone -- this Thursday at 11am EDT. Frank has worked with customers of all sizes to implement IBM replication and federation solutions. We will combine his real world experience with the latest product information shared by our colleagues Dylan Murphy and Steve Tessler from IBM. These tools, IBM's replication solutions Q Replication and InfoSphere Change Data Capture, and federation solutions Data Explorer and InfoSphere Federation Server, work with Oracle, as well as most vendor databases (so yes, DB2 fans are welcome to join us!)
