Mark Filipi (SurveyMonkey), Brian Cain (Dropbox) delivers his talk, "MySQL GTID Implementation, Maintenance, and Best Practices - The Short Version", on DAY 2 of the Percona Live Open Source Database Conference 2017, 4/26, at Santa Clara, CA. Many MySQL shops have made the transition from MySQL 5.5 to 5.6 in the last few years, but GTID (global transaction identifier) implementation has often been considered too difficult or risky a change. MySQL 5.7 is making GTID implementation easier, but it may not yet be clear why to convert. This 50 minute presentation covers GTID concepts, the process for converting from default replication, and demonstrate techniques for being successful with GTID. It covers all the essential materials from last year's 3 hour tutorial in a condensed format. Concepts - Definition - How GTIDs differ from traditional binary log positioning and advantages for converting - GTID sets and how they relate to missing transactions, slave_parallel_workers, and slave_parallel_type - Compare implementation steps between Oracle MySQL and Percona Server - server_id, server_uuid, and how a new server may cause conflicts with GTID Implementation - Converting a running master-slave topology to use GTIDs - Adding a new slave to create a 3-tier topology (master - relay - slave) - Promoting a slave to master and to relay Maintenance - Reviewing GTID sets to determine the currently writing master - Demonstrating GTID set gaps caused by parallelism versus missing transactions - Finding extra or missing transactions within the binary log - Correcting missing data using gtid_next and “faking” a transaction to correct out of sync issues New 5.7 Features and Advanced Concepts - Replication feature changes in 5.7 - Specific settings to tune or ignore for 5.6 and 5.7

Nuno Carvalho, Principal Software Engineer, Luis Soares, Principal Software Engineer, Oracle, deliver their talk, "Everything You Need to Know About MySQL Group Replication", on DAY 1, 2, or 3 of the Percona Live Open Source Database Conference 2017, 4/27, at Santa Clara, CA. MySQL Group Replication is a new plugin that implements an exciting extension to the proven and long standing MySQL Replication technology. It leverages advanced distributed protocols to ultimately provide to the end user features such as data replication, high availability, split brain protection and automation. It can be deployed in single-primary mode (default), in which primary fail-over is handled gracefully and automatically, or in multi-master mode, in which row level conflicts are detected and handled automatically as well. Regardless of the deployment mode, the end result is that this new addition provides a consistent and ependable replicated state machine, thus effectively enabling a fault-tolerant MySQL database service. Come and learn all about this replication plugin. At the end of the session, you will be able to understand how it works, the use cases it address, its limitations and also its roadmap ahead. Moreover, you will get to know how it fits in the overall high availability roadmap at MySQL. Take the opportunity to discuss and engage directly with the engineers behind the product about how this new plugin can help you expand your business on top of a MySQL database server. https://www.percona.com/live/17/sessions/everything-you-need-know-about-mysql-group-replication

In addition we have started the UDR project, sharing most of the code and infrastructure with BDR, which provides unidirectional logical replication for the many cases where multi-master replication is not required. To implement BDR a lot of features have already been integrated into core PostgreSQL (9.4). Now that 9.4 is released and BDR/UDR is in production in several complex environment there's some important discussions to be had about what can and what cannot be integrated into core PostgreSQL. We will discuss: Which features are in core postgres Which features does BDR/UDR provide on top of that What can be integrated into core PostgreSQL and how Future features Problems found during the development

Session 2. Interpreting Error Messages • Diagnostics might be error messages or warning messages. • An error message is returned for statements that fail: • ERROR 1146 : Table'test.no_such_table' doesn't exist • These messages typically have three components : • A MySQL-specific error code. ◦ An SQLSTATE error code defined by standard SQL and ODBC. ◦ A text message that describes the problem. This string provides a summary of the statement outcome: An operating system-level error might occur: The information string for multiple-row statements is a summary. An operating system error includes an Errcode number that might have a system-specific meaning. For Example Error Code 13 : Permission Denied Error Code 28 : No Space Left on Device Error Code 64 : Machine not on Network Error Code 2 : No such File or Directory The SHOW WARNINGS Statement MySQL Server generates warnings when it is not able to fully comply with a request. These warnings can be displayed with the SHOW WARNINGS statement. • Warnings generated by one statement are available from the server until you issue another statement that can generate warnings. • "Warnings" actually can occur at several levels of severity: • Error messages indicate serious problems that prevent the server from completing a request. • Warning messages indicate problems for which the server can continue processing the request. • Note messages are informational only. An error occurs for the SELECT statement. For the DELETE statement, the message is only a note. That is certainly true when the statement finishes, even though the statement did nothing. The SHOW ERRORS Statement • The SHOW ERRORS statement is similar to SHOW WARNINGS, but displays only messages for error conditions. • SHOW ERRORS, like SHOW WARNINGS, supports a LIMIT clause to restrict the number of rows to return. Barcelona: https://www.datacouncil.ai/barcelona New York City: https://www.datacouncil.ai/new-york-city San Francisco: https://www.datacouncil.ai/san-francisco Singapore: https://www.datacouncil.ai/singapore Download the slides: https://dataeng.co/2Lu45JS ABOUT THE TALK: Years ago when working at Amazon on shopping cart infrastructure and the precursor to DynamoDB, my co-founder and I realized that while distributed key value stores were useful for a few use-cases, we missed many of the benefits of relational databases: transactions, joins, and the power of the lingua franca of RDBMS’s: SQL. So we challenged ourselves to modernize the traditional relational database, to take a robust open source relational database and transform it into a distributed database. This talk is about my team’s journey to create a more modern relational database. I’ll talk about the distributed systems problems we had to solve in order to scale out the Postgres open source database, in order to achieve parallelism and a concomitant increase in performance. I'll describe the architecture of the distributed query planner; how we extend traditional relational algebra operators to plan distributed queries and scale reads. I’ll also describe distributed deadlock detection, and how that enabled us to scale out transactions spanning multiple machines. ABOUT THE SPEAKER: Sumedh is the co-founder & VP Engineering at Citus Data. Previously he worked at Amazon as a Software Engineer. He holds a Master's degree in Computer Science from Stanford University. Have you experienced slow down in your application because of blocking and wondered what you can do? This talk will cover the basics of concurrency starting with isolation levels including RCSI and snapshot isolation levels, lock escalation, locking granularity and deadlocks. We will follow thru this with diagnosing and troubleshooting the blocking issues and will conclude with general guidelines in designing application(s) for maximum concurrency. Session Goals: * Overview of blocking and concurrency in SQL Server. This is more of refresher to bring everyone on the same page. * Use demos to show blocking including lock escalation and steps you can do minimize or eliminate blocking without any changes in the application. * Use demos to show deadlocks and waits induced thru page latches and show how to monitor and troubleshoot.
