Top Nine Coding Guidelines for Oracle PL/SQL

08:00
My take, as of November 2015, of some of the most helpful guidelines to follow when writing PL/SQL code: 1. MAXSQL - maximize use of SQL first and foremost 2. SPOD - single point of definition 3. TRACE - production-available application-level tracing 4. LOG - consistent, encapsulated error logging 5. BULK - avoid row by row 6. OBVIOUS - make your code tell its own story, comment when it can't 7. NESTPROG - use nested subprograms 8. DECLARE - use declarative features of language 9. WARN - use compile-time warnings Accompanying blog post: http://stevenfeuersteinonplsql.blogspot.com/2015/10/your-ideas-for-more-important-plsql.html ======================================== Practically Perfect PL/SQL with Steven Feuerstein Copyright © 2015 Oracle and/or its affiliates. PL/SQL: Mutating Triggers Part-1

06:24
In this tutorial, you'll learn... PL/SQL (Procedural Language/Structured Query Language) is Oracle Corporation's procedural extension for SQL and the Oracle relational database. PL/SQL is available in Oracle Database (since version 7), TimesTen in-memory database (since version 11.2.1), and IBM DB2 (since version 9.7).[1] Oracle Corporation usually extends PL/SQL functionality with each successive release of the Oracle Database. PL/SQL includes procedural language elements such as conditions and loops. It allows declaration of constants and variables, procedures and functions, types and variables of those types, and triggers. It can handle exceptions (runtime errors). Arrays are supported involving the use of PL/SQL collections. Implementations from version 8 of Oracle Database onwards have included features associated with object-orientation. One can create PL/SQL units such as procedures, functions, packages, types, and triggers, which are stored in the database for reuse by applications that use any of the Oracle Database programmatic interfaces. PL/SQL works analogously to the embedded procedural languages associated with other relational databases. For example, Sybase ASE and Microsoft SQL Server have Transact-SQL, PostgreSQL has PL/pgSQL (which emulates PL/SQL to an extent), and IBM DB2 includes SQL Procedural Language,[2] which conforms to the ISO SQL’s SQL/PSM standard. The designers of PL/SQL modeled its syntax on that of Ada. Both Ada and PL/SQL have Pascal as a common ancestor, and so PL/SQL also resembles Pascal in several aspects. However, the structure of a PL/SQL package does not resemble the basic Object Pascal program structure as implemented by a Borland Delphi or Free Pascal unit. Programmers can define public and private global data-types, constants and static variables in a PL/SQL package.[3] PL/SQL also allows for the definition of classes and instantiating these as objects in PL/SQL code. This resembles usage in object-oriented programming languages like Object Pascal, C++ and Java. PL/SQL refers to a class as an "Abstract Data Type" (ADT) or "User Defined Type" (UDT), and defines it as an Oracle SQL data-type as opposed to a PL/SQL user-defined type, allowing its use in both the Oracle SQL Engine and the Oracle PL/SQL engine. The constructor and methods of an Abstract Data Type are written in PL/SQL. The resulting Abstract Data Type can operate as an object class in PL/SQL. Such objects can also persist as column values in Oracle database tables. PL/SQL is fundamentally distinct from Transact-SQL, despite superficial similarities. Porting code from one to the other usually involves non-trivial work, not only due to the differences in the feature sets of the two languages,[4] but also due to the very significant differences in the way Oracle and SQL Server deal with concurrency and locking. There are software tools available that claim to facilitate porting including Oracle Translation Scratch Editor,[5] CEITON MSSQL/Oracle Compiler [6] and SwisSQL.[7] The StepSqlite product is a PL/SQL compiler for the popular small database SQLite. PL/SQL Program Unit A PL/SQL program unit is one of the following: PL/SQL anonymous block, procedure, function, package specification, package body, trigger, type specification, type body, library. Program units are the PL/SQL source code that is compiled, developed and ultimately executed on the database. The basic unit of a PL/SQL source program is the block, which groups together related declarations and statements. A PL/SQL block is defined by the keywords DECLARE, BEGIN, EXCEPTION, and END. These keywords divide the block into a declarative part, an executable part, and an exception-handling part. The declaration section is optional and may be used to define and initialize constants and variables. If a variable is not initialized then it defaults to NULL value. The optional exception-handling part is used to handle run time errors. Only the executable part is required. A block can have a label. Package Packages are groups of conceptually linked functions, procedures, variables, PL/SQL table and record TYPE statements, constants, cursors etc. The use of packages promotes re-use of code. Packages are composed of the package specification and an optional package body. The specification is the interface to the application; it declares the types, variables, constants, exceptions, cursors, and subprograms available. The body fully defines cursors and subprograms, and so implements the specification. Two advantages of packages are: Modular approach, encapsulation/hiding of business logic, security, performance improvement, re-usability. They support object-oriented programming features like function overloading and encapsulation. Using package variables one can declare session level (scoped) variables, since variables declared in the package specification have a session scope.

Tutorial 1 - Creating a basic form with Oracle Form Builder 10G

07:12
Creating a very simple form using Oracle Developer Suite 10G. Shows the basics of connecting to your database and using the data block wizard, as well as running and querying the form. PLEASE NOTE: This demonstration assumes that the viewer has a working knowledge of SQL and PL/SQL. Tutorial 2: Using radio buttons can be found at the following link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X5L3rHU5TBY UPDATE: Just an update regarding this video. Many people have asked me why I do not use voice overs. I specifically created these videos so that the students I teach have access to additional material outside of class and our LMS. Because we are based in South Africa, where internet access is still a challenge and mobile data costs are high, one of the key goals when I made these tutorials were to keep them as small and bandwidth efficient as possible, thus the lack of voice overs. Never in my wildest dreams did I expect that the videos would become so popular outside of my small circle of students. Please let me know if you would like to see more videos, and if yes, which topics would you like to see covered?

Bio: Steven Feuerstein, Oracle Corporation Steven Feuerstein is an expert on the Oracle PL/SQL language, having written 10 books on PL/SQL, including Oracle PL/SQL Programming and Oracle PL/SQL Best Practices (all published by O'Reilly Media). Steven is an Architect for Oracle Corporation, leading a team of evangelists with a mission of helping users leverage Oracle Database as a powerful application development platform. Steven has been developing software since 1980, originally spent five years with Oracle (1987-1992), and was PL/SQL Evangelist for Quest Software (and then Dell) from January 2001 to February 2014, at which point he returned joyfully to Oracle Corporation. He was one of the original Oracle ACE Directors and writes regularly for Oracle Magazine, which named him the PL/SQL Developer of the Year in both 2002 and 2006. He is also the first recipient of ODTUG's Lifetime Achievement Award (2009). Read Steven's commentary on PL/SQL and other Oracle technologies at stevenfeuersteinonplsql.blogspot.com. Session: Cool Package Features You May Not Know About Topic: Database Development Packages are the building blocks of any well-designed PL/SQL-based application. That means that most PL/SQL developers are at least familiar with the basics of packages. This session will first make sure you aware of key package features, such as the initialization section, oveloading, and package level data, and then explores lesser-known features of packages including serialization of package data and whitelisting access to packages (new to 12.1 PL/SQL). Back to Top PL/SQL Developers, the Most Important Developers on Earth: Part 1 & 2 Topic: Database Development It's a mobile, app-y, Internutty kind of world - does PL/SQL still have a role to play? You bet it does! And the way we write our PL/SQL is more important than ever before. This special two-part presentation will focus on using PL/SQL to build hiqh-quality and highly efficient APIs to data and the business rules that form the foundation of your applications. And because those APIs are going to be around for a while, you'll get top tips for writing highly maintainable code, too.

6. Always log error (and backtrace) before re-raising the exception.

02:28
When you re-raise an exception, you will reset the backtrace (the track back to the line on which the error was raised) and might change the error code (if you raise a different exception to propagate the exception "upwards"). So it is extremely important to call you error logging subprogram (see previous Good to Know) before you re-raise an exception. Steph Curry entrance and logo splashes (5-for-10) pregame before Warriors (26-14) vs New York Knicks

02:25
From Golden State Warriors (26-14) pregame before New York Knicks, at Oracle Arena in Oakland, CA. NOTE: Views from courtside that are not interviews are, per NBA rules, limited to a maximum of two minutes. If there is music playing, we will limit each continues recording to under 30 seconds to avoid copyright issues on YouTube -- if there are continued issues with our uploads, we will add 3-second freeze frames. Also, we did not modify the video to account for stability due to timeliness of upload (the sooner the upload for you, the better, is the mantra here). Finally, the foremost reason why the video is often times shaky is because we are simultaneously filming on other platforms such as Twitter or Instagram. This account was built on Twitter (over 140,000 followers), so we will always make them a priority and timeliness of those tweets are just as important as getting this HD video processed and uploaded as well -- so if you could please be more appreciative of our inside looks as no other media companies currently do this, it will allow us to have faith in what we’re doing and continue the endeavor. Killer Whale Attack ( Documentary )

49:00
The killer whale or orca (Orcinus orca) is a toothed whale belonging to the oceanic dolphin family, of which it is the largest member. Killer whales are found in all oceans, from Arctic and Antarctic regions to tropical seas. Killer whales have a diverse diet, although individual populations often specialize in particular types of prey. Some feed exclusively on fish, while others hunt marine mammals such as seals and dolphins. They have been known to attack baleen whale calves, and even adult whales. Killer whales are apex predators, as there is no animal which preys on them.
