Automatic Storage Management (ASM) is a feature that has be introduced in Oracle 10g to simplify the storage of Oracle datafiles, controlfiles, logfiles and backups. ASM will be used as the file system and volume manager for Oracle Database files (data, online redo logs, control files, archived redo logs), and the Fast Recovery Area. NOTE: ASMLib in the Unbreakable Enterprise Kernel. ASMLib – Linux specific ASM library and its associated driver. The Oracle ASMLib kernel driver is now included in the Unbreakable Enterprise Kernel. No driver package needs to be installed when using this kernel. The oracleasm-support and oracleasmlib packages still need to be installed. The oracleasm-support can be installed from Oracle Linux ISO image. For other Linux flavors could be found here – (Download section for particular Linux distribution) The oracleasmlib can be downloaded from ULN (Unbreakable Linux Network), subscription is required. Non-subscribers are free to use the similar package built for RHEL on their Enterprise Linux machines, which we will use in this tutorial. Action plan: 1. Installing Oracle Enterprise Linux and creating virtual hard disks in VMware for ASM disks 2. Creating recommended OS groups and user for Grid Infrastructure 3. Creating login scripts for grid and oracle users 4. Installing Oracle ASM packages 5. Creating ASM disk volumes 6. Downloading and installing Oracle Grid Infrastructure software 7. In this Tutorial we will see how we can configure 11.2 standalone database with ASM manually. You might have to create ASM instance manually when you want to have allocation unit (AU_SIZE) other than 1 MB(default). For 11.2.0.1 and 11.2.0.2 Grid Installation OUI or AMSCA does not have provision to modify allocation unit while creating the instance. This feature is available from 11.2.0.3 ASMCA. Following environment was used to test this setup on VMWare. Operating System : OEL 5.3 (32 bit) Oracle Version : 11.2.0.2 Grid Infrastructure Version : 11.2.0.2 The approach would remain same for different 11.2 patchset on Linux platform. We will NOT be covering installation of VMWare, guest OS and VMWare tools in this article. You can find lot of articles helping you to do this. So lets start with list of tasks that needs to be done to accomplish our goal. Install Missing RPM packages Add disks at OS level for ASM Create oracle user and directories Set Kernel Parameters Install ASMLib and configure devices Install Grid Infrastructure Binaries Install Oracle Database Binaries Start CSSD service Create ASM Service & Instance Create Database Service & Instance Install Missing RPM packages Login as root and ensure that following packages are applied. rpm -q binutils compat-libstdc++ elfutils-libelf elfutils-libelf-devel gcc gcc-c++ glibc glibc-common glibc-devel- glibc-headers ksh libaio libaio-devel libgcc libstdc++ libstdc++-devel make sysstat unixODBC unixODBC-devel Install any of the missing packages. Add disks at OS level for ASM For ASM we will be needing disks. In a production environment this would be provided by storage admin. For this test setup I am utilizing VMware ability to add disks.

This video demonstrates Oracle RAC 11g R2 Clusterware two nodes (rac1, rac2) Installation on Oracle Virtual Box. in other words it talks about Installing the Grid Infrastructure. Note:-- This Lab was done on Host Machine consist Windows 8 OS 64bit, 16 GB RAM Reference URL:- https://oracle-base.com/articles/11g/... https://oracle-base.com/articles/11g/oracle-db-11gr2-rac-installation-on-oel5-using-virtualbox#install_grid_infrastructure What is Cluvfy? Prior to 11gR2 we would probably use the "runcluvfy.sh" utility in the clusterware root directory to check the prerequisites have been met. If you are intending to configure SSH connectivity using the installer this check should be omitted as it will always fail. If you want to setup SSH connectivity manually, then once it is done you can run the "runcluvfy.sh" with the following command. You must go to the location like "/mountpoint/clusterware/" in mycase it was "/u01/grid"......then you run command something like below "sh runcluvfy.sh stage -pre crsinst -n rac1,rac2 -verbose" You may have to troubleshoot errors before proceeding to clusterware installation. 1, "./runInstaller" trigger this command to start Oracle Clusterware Installation. 2, Select the "Install and Configure Grid Infrastructure for a Cluster" option, then click the "Next" button. 3, Select the "Typical Installation" option, then click the "Next" button. 4, On the "Specify Cluster Configuration" screen, enter the SCAN name in my case it is "rac-scan" , if you don't know or confused what could be SCAN name then please check "/etc/hosts" file and click the "Add" button. 5, Enter the details of the second node in the cluster, in my case it is like "rac2.sunmerge.com" "rac2-vip.sunmerge.com" then click the "OK" button. 6, Click the "SSH Connectivity..." button and enter the password for the "oracle" user. Click the "Setup" button to to configure SSH connectivity, and the "Test" button to test it once it is complete. 7, Enter "/u01/app/11.2.0/grid" as the software location and "Automatic Storage Manager" as the cluster registry storage type. Enter the ASM password and click the "Next" button. 8, Set the redundancy to "External". if the ASM disks are not displayed, click the "Change Discovery Path" button and enter "/dev/oracleasm/disks/*" and click the "OK" button. Select all 5 disks and click the "Next" button. 9,Accept the default inventory directory by clicking the "Next" button. 10, Wait while the prerequisite checks complete. If you have any issues, either fix them or check the "Ignore All" checkbox and click the "Next" button. 11, If you are happy with the summary information, click the "Finish" button. 12, Wait while the setup takes place. The oracle 12c grid installation got failed and has to be removed to begin new grid installation on two nodes. This is performed on the home machine and the same can be used in live environment too. OS is Oracle Enterprise Linux 6.3 Oracle version is 12.1.0.1 Commands: from root user: cd $GRID_HOME/bin ./crsctl stop crs from grid user: cd ../bin/deinstall ./deinstall from root: Deleting ASM Disk after grid deinstallation: dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/sdb1 bs=1024 count=100 dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/sdc1 bs=1024 count=100 dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/sdd1 bs=1024 count=100 dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/sde1 bs=1024 count=100 oracleasm listdisks oracleasm deletedisk VOL1 oracleasm deletedisk VOL2 oracleasm deletedisk VOL3 oracleasm deletedisk VOL4 oracleasm scandisks on all nodes oracleasm listdisks Thank you!!!

In this Tutorial we will see how we can configure 11.2 standalone database with ASM manually. You might have to create ASM instance manually when you want to have allocation unit (AU_SIZE) other than 1 MB(default). For 11.2.0.1 and 11.2.0.2 Grid Installation OUI or AMSCA does not have provision to modify allocation unit while creating the instance. This feature is available from 11.2.0.3 ASMCA. Following environment was used to test this setup on VMWare. Operating System : OEL 5.3 (32 bit) Oracle Version : 11.2.0.2 Grid Infrastructure Version : 11.2.0.2 The approach would remain same for different 11.2 patchset on Linux platform. We will NOT be covering installation of VMWare, guest OS and VMWare tools in this article. You can find lot of articles helping you to do this. So lets start with list of tasks that needs to be done to accomplish our goal. Install Missing RPM packages Add disks at OS level for ASM Create oracle user and directories Set Kernel Parameters Install ASMLib and configure devices Install Grid Infrastructure Binaries Install Oracle Database Binaries Start CSSD service Create ASM Service & Instance Create Database Service & Instance Install Missing RPM packages Login as root and ensure that following packages are applied. rpm -q binutils compat-libstdc++ elfutils-libelf elfutils-libelf-devel gcc gcc-c++ glibc glibc-common glibc-devel- glibc-headers ksh libaio libaio-devel libgcc libstdc++ libstdc++-devel make sysstat unixODBC unixODBC-devel Install any of the missing packages. Add disks at OS level for ASM For ASM we will be needing disks. In a production environment this would be provided by storage admin. For this test setup I am utilizing VMware ability to add disks.

Oracle 12c Database New Features - Pluggable Database - Video 1 1. Pluggable Database * Oracle 12c introduces a new feature called 'Pluggable Database'. Here Oracle Metadata and user data are totally separated into two sections. One is Container DB (or CDB) which will hold Oracle Metadata. The other is Pluggable DB (or PDB) which will hold user data. How does a Pluggable Database work? In the regular database, Oracle's metadata and user's application data are integrated. For beginners, Oracle Metadata is the data that is present when you install a new Oracle Database (without any sample schemas). Even though it can be called as an empty database, it still has data provided by Oracle. This data is needed by the database to function. For example, the objects owned by SYS, SYSTEM are mostly metadata. Then user data is entered into that database. They will go under multiple user schemas. Now the database is being used by the users. Now a situation arises so that we need to create another database on the same server. Why? Let us say that you need to provide data to two clients. And you don't want one client to other's data. And your data is contained in an extensive set of application schemas. In this case, making a copy of those applications schemas into a different set of names and making them reside in the same database is very difficult. So, you provide two separate databases. This also ensures that there is no security violation. So, we install another new database, which comes with Oracle Metadata. Then we load the user data. In this method, which is currently being used (Year 2013), there will be a need for more memory for both the database instances. There will be two SGAs, two sets of smon, pmon and other background processes running. Then if we need to copy one database to another, we need to rely on extensive procedures which includes exporting the data from the source database first, then removing the data at the target and then finally loading the data in there. After that, we need to take care of the user security and object privileges etc. So, if you want to provide data for multiple tenants, that is multiple clients, then with the current set of features (till Oracle 11g), we have to create multiple databases. That is, one database for one client. In otherwords, there is no multi-tenancy. Multi-Tenancy is becoming an important requirement in cloud infrastructure, these days. You would like to have the ability of providing data to multiple clients from the same database system with full confidence in security. This can be achieved in Pluggable Database. In a Pluggable Database, Oracle basically separates its metadata entirely from the user data. Metadata is stored in a section called Container DB. Then the user data are stored in Pluggable DBs. It also stores user metadata in the Pluggable DB. By the way, what is user metadata? For example, earlier, the list of user accounts that exist in a database is tightly inegrated with Oracle Metadata. Now, with the separation of Container DB and Pluggable DB, the user accounts must exist in the Pluggable DB. So, the Pluggable DB not only contains user data, but also some user metadata. So, what are the benefits? * Multi-Tenancy - We can bring in two Pluggable DBs under one Container DB. Both will be totally segregated, but yet controlled by one instance. This is an important feature for SaaS (Software as a Service) platforms, Cloud, On-Demand and Vendor Managed Application solutions. * Easy cloning/copying. Now the cloning and copying the databases across servers would be much easier. Just clone a Pluggable DB and plug-it-in in a different server. * Very easy upgrades and patching.

Primary Database: A primary database is a production database. The primary database is used to create a standby database. Every standby database is associated with one and only one primary database. Standby Database: A physical or logical standby database is a database replica created from a backup of a primary database . A Data Guard configuration consists of one production (or primary) database and up to nine standby databases.
