This short movie clip was made in Angola. In 1575 Portugal discovered Angola. The name "Angola" comes from the Portuguese colonial name "Reino de Angola". The Bantus (original name for Angolans) were Animists and believed in the nature. By a series of wars they gradually controlled over the Angolan people and established a colony for 400 years. The Portuguese based the colony first on the trade of slaves. With the expansion of the colonial area the Portuguese discovered the high amount of natural resources, like diamonds and petrol. It kept them staying in Angola until the 20th century. Angola's parties began to negotiate for independence in 1975. Almost immediately, a civil war started between the parties from Angola. The civil war was fueled by the geopolitics of the Cold War and by the ability to access Angola's natural resources. After the 27-year long Civil war, Angola was destroyed.
Nowadays Angola's economy is based on oil and diamonds and it's the fastest growing economy in Africa and one of the strongest in the world. Nevertheless the Angolan population faces huge social and economic problems.
Only about 30% of the population has access to the basic health care. Only 40% of the population have access to the adequate safe drinking water. Angola has one of the highest infant mortality rate in the world and one of the world's lowest life expectancy. Thousands of people die every year due to diseases like diarrhea, malaria, meningitis, tuberculosis.
Nowadays, Angolan people are overloaded by Western TV and Western products. The Western influence has changed the Angolan beauty image. The natural look, based on the short thick hair of the Angolans, is gone. The long thin hair of the Europeans are more popular and there is a big pressure on women to look like the people on TV and on advertisements. Angolan women have to spend an enormous amount of money to buy artificial hair each month ...
