Cartridge compliance and Resonant Frequencies, vibrations (AnalogMagik Tutorial 7)

Accurate signal retrieval during vinyl play back is highly dependent upon reducing vibrations which the turntable is subjected to.    Vibration can come from many sources:   foot stomping, motor rumbling, air borne sound waves, or improper turntable isolation, which will all translate into unwanted signals being picked up by the Cartridge.    There are many ways to measure and quantify vibrations.    ​ A good way to quantify vibrations is to measure the Intermodulation Distortion Level (IMD) between two frequency signals.   Intermodulation Distortions are essentially signals not recorded on the LP, and are being picked up by the stylus, therefore it would be desirable to have the lowest IMD% number as possible.    We have incorporated two low frequency signals in this test.  Note the test frequencies and algorithm in our formula employed in this test is different than the VTA IMD% analysis.     ​ Play the "Vibration Measurement" track on the test LP and the Analog Magik software will display the amount of Intermodulation Distortion expressed in percentage on the computer screen.   A good setup should yield a number lower than 2% to 3.0% ​ If the level of vibrations is too high to begin with, it will mask the incremental changes which you are trying to measure on the different parameters and render them meaningless, therefore it is important to reduce vibrations to the minimal. ​ Repeat the measurement by making changes to your turntable, such as going from direct drive to belt drive, adjusting the tension of the suspension, changing the isolation platform, or changing the location of the turntable.    A lower IMD% number would indicate an improvement has been made.  ​ We wish to say that the test we have incorporated is only one of many which can be used to measure vibrations.   In our product development engineer's laboratory, we have ultra precise vibration measurement devices which are 100x more accurate than what we have provided, but the device cost more than a car.  While there are far more sophisticated tools and test equipment available, we have to balance between cost, effectiveness and market demand.   We believe the one we have provided will provide a good starting point to help users quantify vibrations.    ​ ​Video content by Mezmer Media Inc. Industry Standards Compliance with MBSE
In many industries the product development team must show that they have met the requirements of a set of regulatory standards in their system design to an auditing or regulatory agency prior to product deployment. Not only does the design have to “comply” with a regulation or standard, in some cases the regulatory authority asks for evidence that the system has been tested and certified to meet the standard. Additionally, many times the goal of a product development team is to make a single product that can be used in more than one application. This means that the end product may have to comply with more than one regulatory regime. MBSE is the application of modeling to support system engineering requirement, design, analysis, verification, and validation activities by including these areas in one data repository. Much has been explored in how to apply MBSE to basic system design. Extending MBSE principles to provide traceabilty and compliance to industry standards allows the system engineer to leverage the model to provide traceability to the industry standard vice using manual traceabilty methods. This webinar will explore a schema for model based management of industry standards to demonstrate traceability and compliance of the system design. With the ability to connect the fundamental system design (in the model repository) to multiple industry standards, the system engineering manager will benefit by gaining in-depth traceability of design compliance and verification in system testing. Using the connected model will enable the system engineering team to answer any number of compliancy based questions such as: • Which standards and specific requirements are included in the system design? • From the system design perspective, what standards does the system comply with? • How was the system tested to insure compliance to the standard? • How does the system meet the requirements of Standard “A” and Standard “B”?

Hi everyone – my name is Matt and I’m an engineer here at Keysight and welcome to the ‘The ABCs of EMC’. Emissions testing refers to the amount of electromagnetic energy your device is emitting. Its important to ensure your device does not unintentionally interfere with neighboring devices. There are several compliance tests that your device will need to pass at a certified test facility before it can be brought to market. These EMC tests range from radiated and conducted emissions to power line surge and electrostatic discharge immunity. Today we’ll discuss 2 tests that are often failed by devices – conducted and radiated emissions. In the last episode we defined EMC, or electromagnetic compatibility, and also talked about how important it is to be familiar with your local compliance standards. If you haven’t checked it out already, I highly suggest doing so before watching this episode by clicking on the card above or the link in the description below. Radiated emissions tests characterize unintentional electromagnetic energy released over the air. Basically, a radiated emissions test searches for signals broadcast by the DUT through the air. Since radiated emissions are one of the most frequently failed tests, it’s imperative that you spend time measuring your device’s radiated emissions. Conducted emissions tests, on the other hand, characterize unintentional electromagnetic energy released via conductive material like cables. So, with this kind of test, you’re testing for electromagnetic disturbances that are conducted outside the device along its interconnecting cables –like power, signal, or data cables. Conducted emissions tests focus on the unwanted signals generated through to the AC mains connection of a device. These emissions sources can include, but are not limited to, switches, regulators and low frequency clocks. In order to know what standards you're testing against you need to know your product's classification and where it will be sold. Before doing any sort of EMC testing it is very important that you’re familiar with your local compliance standards. While we mentioned CISPR, or the International Special Committee on Radio Interference, in the last episode, CISPR’s standards only represent the foundation for emissions tests we’ll be discussing in this ‘ABCs of EMC’ series. CISPR is not representative of all EMC regulatory standards across the world and therefore it is important to be familiar with your local standards. Classifications for a product range from – automotive, communication and so forth – as seen on the table that is now on screen. Only once you understand your local compliance standards can you conduct Pre-compliance EMC tests accurately. For pre-compliance conducted emissions testing you’ll need a EMI reciever or spectrum analyzer with an EMC application, a transient limiter, and a line impedance stabilization network – or LISN. For pre-compliance radiated emissions testing you’ll need an EMI reciever or spectrum analyzer with an EMC application and a calibrated EMI antenna. Here's what our radiated emissions testing looks like. You’ll need a large area away from other electronic equipment to avoid electromagnetic interference that can disrupt your testing and lead to inaccurate test results. Your device most commonly will be placed at a distance of 3 meters away from the antenna which is connected to the EMI reciever or spectrum analyzer outside the chamber. What does a Design Engineer do?
A Design Engineer is a general term that covers multiple engineering disciplines including electrical, mechanical, chemical engineer, aeronautical engineer, civil, and structural/building/architectural. While industrial designers may be responsible for the conceptual aesthetic and ergonomic aspects of a design, the design engineer usually works with a team of engineers and other designers to develop conceptual and detailed designs. They may work with industrial designers and marketers to develop the product concept and specifications, and may direct the design effort. In many engineering areas, a distinction is made between the design engineer and the planning engineer in design; Analysis is important for planning engineers, while synthesis is more paramount for design engineers. When the design involves public safety, the design engineer is usually required to be licensed, for example a Professional Engineer in the U.S and Canada. There is usually an 'industrial exemption' for design engineers working on project internal to companies and not delivering professional services directly to the public. Design Engineers may work in a team along with industrial designers to create the drawings necessary for prototyping and production, or in the case of buildings, for construction. However, with the advent of CAD and solid modeling software (PTC Creo, SolidWorks, SpaceClaim, Solid Edge, KeyCreator Autodesk Inventor, boss, NX, CATIA, etc., for example) the design engineers may create the drawings themselves. The next responsibility of many design engineers is prototyping. A model of the product is created and reviewed. Prototypes are either functional or non-functional. Functional "alpha" prototypes are used for testing and the non-functional are used for form and fit checking. Virtual prototyping software like Ansys or Comsol may also be used. This stage is where design flaws are found and corrected, and tooling, manufacturing fixtures, and packaging are developed. Once the "alpha" prototype is finalized, after many iterations, the next step is the "beta" pre-production prototype. The design engineer, working with a industrial engineer and manufacturing engineer and a quality engineer reviews an initial run of components and assemblies for design compliance and fabrication/manufacturing methods analysis. This is often determined through statistical process control. Variations in the product are correlated to aspects of the process and eliminated. The most common metric used is the process capability index Cpk. A Cpk of 1.0 is considered the baseline acceptance for full production go-ahead. The design engineer may follow the product and make requested changes and corrections throughout the life of the product. This is referred to as "cradle to grave" engineering. The design process is an information intensive one and design engineers have been found to spend 56% of their time engaged in various information behaviours, including 14% actively searching for information. Furthermore, in addition to design engineers’ core technical competence, research has also demonstrated the critical nature of their personal attributes, project management skills, and cognitive abilities to succeed in the role. Amongst other more detailed findings, a recent work sampling study[3] found that design engineers spend 62.92% of their time engaged in technical work, 40.37% in social work, and 49.66% in computer-based work. Furthermore, there was considerable overlap between these different types of work, with engineers spending 24.96% of their time engaged in technical and social work, 37.97% in technical and non-social, 15.42% in non-technical and social, and 21.66% in non-technical and non-social.

Architectural Engineering 1975 Ph.D. Candidate Civil Engineering 2018 Principal Engineer and Chairman, Haag Engineering Co. Jim D. Wiethorn is a principal engineer and chairman of Haag Engineering Co. with over 31 years of experience dealing with damage and failure analysis. Wiethorn earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in architectural engineering from The University of Texas at Austin in 1973 and 1975. He also earned a bachelor’s degree in math and physics from Baylor University in 1973. Today, Wiethorn is receiving his Ph.D. in civil engineering from UT Austin. A third-generation general contractor, Wiethorn specializes in construction-related accidents, product design and operational issues, particularly dealing with crane operations. He has completed over 1,000 crane-related accident evaluations including but not limited to production, general and critical lifts; American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME)/Occupational Safety and Health compliance of parties involved in lifts and operations; lift planning and design; crane safety programs; wind effects and analysis of mobile and tower cranes; pile driving systems, operations and design; heavy equipment operations; and numerous other crane-related issues. Wiethorn is a member of several ASME committees, including B30 Safety Standards for Cableways, Cranes, Derricks, Hoists, Hooks, Jacks and Slings, B30.3 Tower Cranes and B30.29 Self-Erect Tower Cranes. He also serves on the National Commission for the Certification of Crane Operators’ Tower Crane Committee and Rigging Task Force Committee. In 2014, he published “Crane Accidents: A Study of Causes & Trends to Create a Safer Work Environment, 1983-2013,” which studied details from the findings of over 500 forensically analyzed crane accidents. Wiethorn serves on the Engineering Advisory Board in the Cockrell School of Engineering and on the Board of Advocates in the College of Engineering and Computer Science at Baylor University. In 2008, the Cockrell School’s Department of Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering elected Wiethorn to its Academy of Distinguished Alumni. Wiethorn lives with his wife, Majane Martin, in Sugar Land, Texas, and has six children – Kimberly, Kelli, Elizabeth, Tanner, Rebecca and Breanna.
