8 Best Psychological Negotiation Tactics and Strategies - How to Haggle

07:46
You will learn how to haggle and 8 of the best negotiation strategies and tactics to bartering in this video! The definition of haggling and the meaning of barter is: dispute or bargain persistently, especially over the cost of something. There are many reasons to learn to get a better deal, but most people don’t want to because they are afraid the techniques will step on the seller’s toes or offend them in some way. Here are 8 simple methods to get a better deal without offending the seller, using some simply psychology and the art of negotiation. No salesperson will toss you of the shop out for requesting markdown, as long as you do it in a well-disposed and gracious way. There are tons of tips you could take and use properly when trying to get a better deal, but use the tips in this video to ensure a quality trade. Deals are there to be done, particularly in an emergency. If you see someone needing money on a Craigslist ad or Facebook post, you are at the advantage. Make sure you shake the seller’s hand and thank them for the purchase. If you’ve read How To Win Friends and Influence People you know the importance of using a person’s name to gain a liking bias towards you, so use this to your advantage! How to Read, Take Notes On and Understand Journal Articles | Essay Tips

05:33
The first pilot to my Essay Tips series! I share my method for reading and understanding a journal article or paper quickly and efficiently including how to take good, concise notes and remember useful citations. If your method differs from mine or you think you can give me some pointers then let me know in the comments! This is the first in a series of videos I'm hoping to produce while undertaking my PhD at the University of Exeter on tips for students at university or college whether undergraduate, postgraduate or otherwise. Note: The programme to the left (which I highlight in) is Mendeley. Apologies for forgetting to state this in the video!! If you've enjoyed this video then please do check out the rest of my channel. I generally put out new videos every Tuesday and Friday discussing theatre and playwriting from the perspective of an aspirant and (some might say) emerging playwright, theatre maker and academic. The psychology behind Facebook data breach - BBC News

03:55
Facebook has said it now believes up to 87 million people's data was improperly shared with the political consultancy Cambridge Analytica - many more than previously disclosed. The BBC has been told that about 1.1 million of them are UK-based. The overall figure had been previously quoted as being 50 million by the whistleblower Christopher Wylie. The details were revealed in a blog by the tech firm's chief technology officer, Mike Schroepfer. The BBC has also learned that Facebook now estimates that about 305,000 people had installed the This Is Your Digital Life quiz that had made the data-harvesting possible. The figure previously suggested had been 270,000. Please subscribe HERE http://bit.ly/1rbfUog

Amazing Body Illusions! Psychology for Kids - ExpeRimental #24

07:54
Try 8 illusions that'll confuse your body, and investigate your sense of proprioception in this fun experiment for families! Download the infosheet here for more instructions: http://www.rigb.org/families/experimental/proprioception Alex and the pupils of Ben Jonson Primary School experiment with their sense of proprioception: our awareness of our body. By doing eight different illusions that trick your understanding of your own body, they learn how their senses work, and how they can be confused by conflicting information. In the process, they learn how our sense combine to create the full perception we have of the world. Remember, everyone responds differently to these illusions. Some people won’t feel the effects of some activities, and that’s why it’s good to try as many as possible. As you do them, think about why they might work better on some people than others. For more instructions on carrying out the activity, and to download the templates, click here: http://www.rigb.org/families/experimental/proprioception This series of ExpeRimental is supported by the British Psychological Society: https://beta.bps.org.uk/ Subscribe for regular science videos: http://bit.ly/RiSubscRibe The Ri is on Twitter: http://twitter.com/ri_science and Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/royalinstitution and Tumblr: http://ri-science.tumblr.com/ Our editorial policy: http://www.rigb.org/home/editorial-policy Subscribe for the latest science videos: http://bit.ly/RiNewsletter

Championing the active role of mental health service users in psychological research

07:28
In this audio interview Professor Til Wykes Professor of Clinical Psychology and Rehabilitation at King's College London discusses her part in championing the active role of mental health service users in psychological research that led to her receiving the British Psychological Society’s 2014 Award for Promoting Equality of Opportunity. Throughout her career Professor Wykes has sought to involve mental health service users as active members of research – not just as research participants or consumers. This drive led to the establishment in 2001 of the Service User Research Enterprise (SURE) at King’s College London. SURE undertakes research to test the effectiveness of services and treatments from the perspective of people with mental health problems and their carers. It aims to involve service users in a collaborative way in the whole research process: from design to data collection, through to data analysis and dissemination of results. You can read an article about Professor Wykes award in our monthly magazine, The Psychologist http://thepsychologist.bps.org.uk/volume-27/december-2014/award-promoting-equality-opportunity Interview date: January 2015 Interviewer: Wendy Barnaby Other interviews in this series http://www.bps.org.uk/psychology-public/sharing-our-science/bps-audio-interviews/british-psychological-society-audio-inter

Evolutionary Psychology - TLoNs Podcast #088

Recently evolutionary psychology has been misinterpreted and painted in a negative light. Evolutionary psychology uses what we have learnt from the theory of Evolution and applies it to human psychology. On the face of it this should not have attracted much scorn yet today a number of people are happy to criticsise the field due to political belief. David had a few notes he wanted to add. Pill and mate choice: there were a few things that need to be explained that may not have been clear. Firstly, there is a long-help theory that that women experience “a nuanced pattern of relationship context-dependent cycle shifts in their preferences for certain characteristics in men” (Gildersleeve et al, 2014)1. In very simplistic terms, at peak fertility women will find traits in males that suggest “good genes” – masculine face, dominance, symmetry, genetic dissimilarity (mhc) – highly attractive. I.e. traits that may make the baby genetically ‘better’, but do not necessarily indicate the male would be a good father or long-term partner. This is often described as “Cad Vs Dad”. Such a shift in preference is especially noticeable for short-term mating opportunities. Secondly, as the pill tricks the body into thinking it is not fertile, there has been a suggestion that this could lead to relationship problems when a women changes her birth control method as their partner may no longer seems attractive on an implicit level at times of higher fertility, and this may affect the relationship (see Roberts et al, 2014)2. The reason I’m writing this addendum is because a) I didn’t feel I described why the effect of fertility and the pill was interesting in an evolutionary psychology context, and b) since I last really studied this effect there has been quite a bit of controversy about the fertility/preference data, as ably described by Rob Brooks3, and want to make sure you, dear listeners, have all the facts. 1Gildersleeve, K., Haselton, M. Rebecca Watson’s Dishonest Representation of Evolutionary Psychology

15:28
Evolutionary psychology a theoretical approach to psychology that attempts to explain useful mental and psychological traits as the functional products of natural selection. Evolutionary psychology, in the past, has had a fair amount of criticism from people accusing it of justifying social hierarchies, gender roles, and racial stereotypes. Its proponents have argued back saying that most of the criticisms are straw men and based on incorrect or inaccurate information. And nowhere is there a better example of this than Rebecca Watson’s talk titled “How Girls Evolved to Shop” which was given at Skepticon 5. A talk in which she tried to convince the audience that evolutionary psychology is not science and it exists to deliberately reinforce stereotypes and oppress women. A talk I can only describe as shamelessly dishonest. Chris French on Critical Thinking - Interview Part 4 of 4

23:58
Christopher Charles French is a British psychologist and vocal skeptic specialising in the psychology of paranormal beliefs and experiences, cognition and emotion. He is currently Professor of Psychology at Goldsmiths College, University of London, is head of their Anomalistic Psychology Research Unit which he founded in 2000, and former Editor-in-Chief of The Skeptic (UK) magazine. He teaches a course entitled Psychology, Parapsychology and Pseudoscience as part of the BSc (Hons) Psychology programmes at both Goldsmiths College and Birkbeck College. He is a Chartered Psychologist and a Fellow of the British Psychological Society.[ He has authored or co-authored over 80 articles and chapters dealing with a wide variety of subjects in psychology, his work has been published in the Journal of Abnormal Psychology, the Quarterly Journal of Experimental Psychology, the British Journal of Psychology and the British Journal of Clinical Psychology. The focus of his current research is the psychology of paranormal beliefs and anomalous experiences. In addition to academic activities, such as conference presentations and invited talks in other departments, he frequently appears on radio and television presenting a sceptical view of paranormal claims. He has been consulted as an expert on a wide range of such claims including psychic abilities, recovered memory, telepathy, faith healing, past life regression,[9] ghosts,[10] UFO abductions, out-of-body experiences, astrology and so on. In 2004 French and colleagues conducted an experiment involving electromagnetic fields (EMF) and extremely low frequency sound waves (infrasound) phenomena that have been associated with allegedly haunted locations, the experiment did not establish a causal relationship between these phenomena and experiences of the subjects. A study, led by French and published in 2008, explored the psychology of people who believed they had been abducted by aliens. He has appeared on various science programmes (e.g. Equinox, Science Now, All in the Mind) and documentaries (e.g. Heart of the Matter, Everyman) as well as numerous discussion programmes (e.g. Esther; The Time, The Place; Kilroy; This Morning). In 1997, he was one of three sceptics sitting on a panel for a 90-minute live debate on UFOs broadcast at peak viewing time by the Strange but True? team to mark the 50th anniversary of UFOs. In 1998, he took part in an investigation of reincarnation claims amongst the Druze people of Lebanon, broadcast as part of the To the Ends of the Earth series. This involved spending around three weeks in Lebanon with a film crew. photo of Chris French presenting from podium at the World Skeptics Congress 2012 in Berlin Chris French at the 2012 World Skeptics Congress in Berlin In August 1996, he organised and chaired an integrated paper session on the topic of The Psychology of Paranormal and Pseudoscientific Beliefs at the XXVI International Congress of Psychology in Montreal. He also contributed to a symposium on The Psychology of Anomalous Experience at the British Science Association annual British Science Festival at the University of Birmingham in September 1996. In July 1997, he chaired a symposium on The Psychology of Paranormal Belief at the Fifth European Congress of Psychology in Dublin. He presented a paper at a conference on Paranormal and Superstitious Beliefs: A Skeptical Examination at Manchester Metropolitan University on Friday 13 November 1998. In February 1999, he contributed to a symposium of the Royal Statistical Society (which he co-organised). In July 1999, he co-organised and presented a paper at a half-day conference on Parapsychology: Current Status and Future Prospects at Goldsmiths College and gave a paper at the Sixth European Congress of Psychology in Rome. In February 2001, he gave an invited presentation to the Institute for Cultural Research at the Royal Society of Medicine and he has organised two symposia at major conferences (Glasgow, March 2001; London, July 2001). He made regular appearances on ITV's programme Haunted Homes. He also makes appearances in the Channel 4 documentary series 'Tony Robinson and the Paranormal'. Since 2009, French has been a columnist for The Guardian newspaper exploring scepticism and anomalistic psychology. In January 2010, French was elected as a Fellow of the Committee for Skeptical Inquiry. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chris_French He is @chriscfrench on Twitter Science, Technology & the Future - By Design http://scifuture.org
Healing via Dance - British Psychological Society(BPS), Transpersonal Conference_3

04:20
The 15th Annual Conference of the British Psychological Society (BPS), Transpersonal Psychology Section took place in Scarborough, England on 16-18 September 2011, on the topic "Memories, Dreams and Reflections". The person in charge of Omilos Eksipiretiton (the Servers' Society) along with members participated in the conference where they presented the philosophy and work of Omilos as well as chorodromena during two paper presentations. The feedback they got was very positive. The audience - professionals in the field of mental health, psychiatrists, psychologists, professors, nurses - mentioned "a sense of team work" and "a powerful energy permeated them". Many showed great interest in the Spiritual Healing Section; the selfless stance and devotion through which everything takes place; and the strong will to spread the knowledge that is present in Omilos to as many people as possible. Many of the presenters made reference to our books as well: Dr. L. Culliford, psychiatrist and honorable member of BPS, completed his speech with an abstract from the book "The Master I" by Klairi Lykiardopoulou (published by Megas Seirios Publications which operate under the auspices of Omilos) and he thanked us for giving him the opportunity to get in touch with this book. The person in charge of the Transpersonal Psychology Section magazine requested to present our books in the magazine and some other researchers in the field of "psychology and spirituality" mentioned that they are going to include them in the bibliography of their papers. The conference facilitators along with many of the participants warmly thanked us for our presence there. For more information: http://www.omilos-eksipiretiton.gr

10 Police Interrogation Techniques That You Need To Know About: How Do Police Extract Confessions?

NOTE: Several viewers / commenters expressed concerns that the content of this video is stolen from another vid "Why Cops Beat You In The Interrogation Room". Just to clarify, this video of mine was created and uploaded in March 2017, more than a year earlier than the other video in question. This video presents the differences between police interviews and police interrogations. Then, 10 police interrogation techniques are discussed. These techniques range from the soft and gentle to the manipulative, confrontational, and coercive -- including: the good cop bad cop routine, making false promises of leniency, false evidence ploys, and 7 others. The techniques presented in this video are based on the following peer-reviewed research articles: Cleary, H. D., & Warner, T. C. (2016). The Impact of Early Emotional Neglect

04:44
A lot of our adult problems come down to varieties of emotional neglect suffered in childhood. In this film, we look at one of the most famous experiments in the history of psychology, The Still Face Experiment, devised by Professor Ed Tronick - which gives us an insight into the vulnerability of, and need for love in young children. We may be depressed, anxious or very difficult around sex and relationships. We might in certain moods ask ourselves where the difficulties came from. It’s a continually weird, provocative and yet – in The School of Life’s view – extremely accurate answer that the damage comes, almost always, from childhood, especially early childhood.” You can read more on this and other subjects on our blog, here: https://bit.ly/2LvbX1a MORE SCHOOL OF LIFE Visit us in person at our London HQ: https://bit.ly/2Lx7gnM Watch more films on SELF in our playlist: http://bit.ly/TSOLself You can submit translations and transcripts on all of our videos here: https://www.youtube.com/timedtext_cs_panel?c=UC7IcJI8PUf5Z3zKxnZvTBog&tab=2 Find out how more here: https://support.google.com/youtube/answer/6054623?hl=en-GB SOCIAL MEDIA Feel free to follow us at the links below: Download our App: https://bit.ly/2Aib6f4 Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/theschooloflifelondon/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/TheSchoolOfLife Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/theschooloflifelondon/ CREDITS Produced in collaboration with: Matt Knott https://www.curtisbrown.co.uk/client/matthew-hammett-knott #TheSchoolOfLife #Psychology #Love
