Thin underwater cables hold the internet. See a map of them all.

How the World Map Looks Wildly Different Than You Think

06:20
All of us have seen a world map at some point in our lives before, but it is very difficult to imagine how certain countries and parts of the world compare to each other in size that are far apart. In this video, I explore why the world looks very different than how it is portrayed in the Mercator Projection map. I then go on to explore how certain countries are unexpectedly larger or smaller than what they appear to be, and how some places looks wildly different than our perceptions. PS; Don't totally hate on the Mercator Projection, it's actually a really useful map for navigation and on keeping the correct shape of countries while sacrificing the size that we can all laugh about! Music is by Ross Bugden. He makes excellent music, please check out his channel! Kayaking Reine Fjord, Lofoten Norway - July 2018

11:19
The video tries to summarise our amazing 4 hour guided kayak tour of the spectacular Reine fjord. My wife and I are experienced kayakers but decided nevertheless to join ReineAdventure's guided tour since we have no experience with tidal currents or possibly rapidly changing weather conditions (like fall winds through the fjords). We were 10 kayakers (2 experienced, 6 beginners and 2 guides) and started out from Sakrisøya (island just northeast of Reine). Since we are experienced my wife and I could chose single kayaks which we (and the guides) prefer and the remaining 6 beginners got double kayaks since they are easier and safer for beginners especially considering the water temperature is only around 12° C (53° F). Here is roughly our approximately 12,5 km (8 miles) long Reine fjord route https://kartor.eniro.se/m/GuVum Note that you can zoom in and out, pan, change map type between map (karta), sea chart (sjökort), and satellite. We were all very pleased with the tour but this video can in no way capture the full grandur of Reine fjord, you simply have to experience it onsite yourself !

Crossing the North Sea Alone- Wintertime. Challenge completed! Pt 1.

23:51
So here it is, my biggest challenge in my sailing career! Sailing solo across the North Sea from Haugesund, Norway- to Lerwick on Shetland the 26th of January. This made me and Sigurd the first ones ever to have crossed the North Sea solo to join the Up Helly Aa- festival on these beautiful islands... Some say crazy, I say crazy not to give it a try. This is how we develop and grow. Staying safe all the time wont get you anywhere. The video was hard to make. Its all about having the effort to pick up the camera when you really dont want to, and most important, trying to make a story out of it.. Seasick, cold and wet every minute. I loved it. Its all about making a plan and follow it. Theres only plan A. You dont think about plan B before you are forced to! Stay on your course and hold it steady! Youve might heard the words often attributed to Mr. Winston Churchill: "If your going through hell, keep walking" ;) Best regards Erik Music: Paddys Green Shamrock Shore/ Peat in the Creel Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/nobullshitjustsailing/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/erikaanderaa/ Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/user?u=3146656&ty=h Linkedin: https://www.linkedin.com/in/erik-aanderaa-552953a4?trk=nav_responsive_tab_profile

Sunrise On The Edge Of The World / Preikestolen / NORWAY

03:28
Drone video gives you the sense of scale, but it just can't describe what you feel when you're standing on the edge of the rock 604m above the sea. You have to be there to really know what it's like. About Preikestolen: Preikestolen or Prekestolen (English: Preacher’s Pulpit or Pulpit Rock) is a famous tourist attraction in the municipality of Forsand in Rogaland county, Norway. Preikestolen is a steep cliff which rises 604 metres (1,982 ft) above the Lysefjorden. Atop the cliff, there is an almost flat top of approximately 25 by 25 metres (82 ft × 82 ft). It sits on the north side of the fjord, opposite the Kjerag plateau, located on the south side. Tourism at the site has been increasing in recent years, with between 150,000 and 200,000 visitors in 2012, making it one of the most visited natural tourist attractions in Norway. BASE jumpers often leap from the cliff. Due to its increased popularity, there is currently a project under way to improve the path to the site, which is only accessible via a 3.8-km (2.4 mi) long hike. - Patreon - https://www.patreon.com/HDscreenerX - Shot with DJI GET YOUR DRONE HERE ! -- https://goo.gl/83uMdk -- - DISCLAIMER: This video and description contains affiliate link, which means that if you click on one of the product links, I’ll receive a small commission. Invasion of Norway & Denmark - Operation Weserübung

12:21
Operation Weserübung was the German Invasion of Norway and Denmark in April 1940. It involved troops from the Army, Kriegsmarine and Luftwaffe. It involved the ships Scharnhorst, Gneisenau, Blücher, Lützow, Admiral Hipper on the German side and HMS Glowworm, Warspite and Glorious on the British. Although it was an operational success, strategically it wasn't. Military History Visualized provides a series of short narrative and visual presentations like documentaries based on academic literature or sometimes primary sources. Videos are intended as introduction to military history, but also contain a lot of details for history buffs. Since the aim is to keep the episodes short and comprehensive some details are often cut. » HOW YOU CAN SUPPORT MILITARY HISTORY VISUALIZED « (A) You can support my channel on Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/mhv (B) You can also buy "Spoils of War" (merchandise) in the online shop: https://www.redbubble.com/people/mhvis/shop (C) If you want to buy books that I use or recommend, here is the link to the Amazon Store: http://astore.amazon.com/ytmh-20 which has the same price for you and gives a small commission to me, thus it is a win/win. » SOCIAL MEDIA LINKS « facebook: https://www.facebook.com/milhistoryvisualized/ twitter: https://twitter.com/MilHiVisualized tumblr: http://militaryhistoryvisualized.tumblr.com/ » SOURCES « Germany and the Second World War. Surrounded by the Arctic Ocean from the north, by the Pacific Ocean from the east and by the Indian Ocean from the south, it is separated from Africa by Suez Canal. The Mediterranean Sea and Black Sea separate Asia from Europe, farther the overland border runs through the Caucasus Mountains, the Caspian Sea, the Ural River and Ural Mountains. This boundary crosses through the territory of Russia, Kazakhstan, Azerbaijan, Georgia and Turkey, so these states are in both continents. Armenia and Cyprus geographically are in Asia, but politically and culturally they also are considered as a part of Europe. The largest of the Asian countries by area is Russia, which occupies about 30% of the total territory of the continent. The smallest one of the independent states is the Maldives, it is an archipelago of islands famous for its beach resorts. Holland's Barriers to The Sea

44:21
The Delta Works in the Netherlands (Holland) is the largest flood protection project in the world. This project consists of a number of surge barriers, for examples: 1- The Oosterscheldekering is the largest of the 13 ambitious Delta Works series of dams and storm surge barriers and it is the largest surge barrier in the world, 9 kilometres (5.6 mi) long. The dam is based on 65 concrete pillars with 62 steel doors, each 42 metres wide. It is designed to protect the Netherlands from flooding from the North Sea. 2- The Maeslantkering is a storm barrier with two movable arms; when the arms are open the waterway remains an important shipping route however when the arms close a protective storm barrier is formed for the city of Rotterdam. Closing the arms of the barrier is a completely automated process done without human intervention. Atlantic Ocean Road, Norway

04:33
Situated in Norway, the Atlantic Road (in Norwegian called Atlanterhavsveien) is a part of Norwegian national road 64 (Rv 64). It is close to the cities of Molde and Kristiansund in the midwest part of the Norwegian coastline. This fantastic and spectacular road is a very popular tourist attraction. Both the local population and tourist visitors frequently use the road to go fishing for cod and other fish directly from the bridges. One of the bridges is special designed for fishing. The 8.3 km (5 mile) road, with 8 bridges of a total length of 891 metres, is built on several small islands and skerries, and is spanned by eight bridges and several landfills. This road has an open sea view which is not so common for roads along the Norwegian coast. Here the distance between the islands was so small that a road could be built across the archipelago. In addition there are fjords and mountains inside the road. The Atlantic Road zigzags across low bridges that jut out over the sea, linking the islands between Molde (famous for its annual jazz festival in July) and Kristiansund in the western fjords. The Hustadvika is an infamous stretch of ocean and when in storm it is truly dramatic. In calmer weather you might spot whales and seals, writes the British newspaper The Guardian (25 April 2006). Chosen as "Norway's construction of the century" in 2005, the road links together small coastal communities. From the town of Kristiansund, the Atlantic Road is only a 30-minute drive through the Atlantic Ocean Tunnel. After passing the tunnel you cross the island of Aver?y with Kvernes Stave Church, the very scenic west side of the island, and the incredible coastline out towards Hustadvika. The Atlantic Road has been awarded the status national tourist route because of the architecture of the road and the bridges, and the incredible coastline it passes through. The Atlantic Road's sharp turns and wild nature have ranked it first on The Guardian's list of the world's best road trips, in sharp competition with world renowned attractions such as Northern Ireland's Antrim coast road and the Himalayas. The construction started 1 August 1983 and was marked by the struggle against the elements. During the six-year duration of the works were recorded up to 12 hurricane category storms. Finally the road was opened on the 7th of July 1989. The first ten years the drivers had to pay toll to drive on it, but since 26th of june 1999 (at 03:00 p.m.) the road has been toll-free. There are four panoramic views- and rest areas with facilities in bold architectural forms along the Atlantic Road. Here you can experience both nature and architecture in great interaction. Some of the viewing platforms are also popular with anglers. The road rides above some rough and uneven surfaces and it's spectacular because it rises itself and falls at many places like a sea at the time of a rough tide. Apart from the incredible road itself, the scenery surrounding it could give any driver shivers. In 1935, the railway plans definitely was set aside. But not until the 70's, the plans where again put into action, this time as a road project, and the 1 August 1983 started the construction work. Technical facts about the Atlantic Road: Overall length: 8274 meters Width: 6.5 meters Maximum gradient: 8% Cost: 122 million Norwegian Kroner (1989) Financing: 50% of highway funds, 25% employment assets and share capital, 25% toll Opening: 7 July 1989 Vevang Stream bridge: 119 meters long, 10 meters high Hulv?gen bridges (3 bridges): 293 meters long, 4 meters high Storseisundet bridge: 260 meters long, 23 meters high Geit?ysundet bridge: 52 meters long, 6 meters high Store Lauv?ysund bridge: 52 meters long, 3 meters high Little Lauv?ysund bridge: 115 meters long, 7 meters high.....God bless all

Major Sea Level Rise in Near Future | Jason Briner | TEDxBuffalo

18:54
If you want to know what the changing climate is doing to the earth, ask someone who's been there. Jason Briner has been above the Arctic Circle more than 35 times. He takes the big topic of global warming and shows you what it's doing to a very important place in this talk. Jason P. Briner is an Associate Professor of Geology at the University at Buffalo. Briner’s research expertise lies in glaciers and climate, specifically in Arctic regions. His passion for Arctic environs obviously explains why, in 2005, Briner moved to Buffalo, NY. Briner has been above the Arctic Circle more than 35 times for his research, in the remote corners of Alaska, Arctic Canada, Greenland and Norway. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at http://ted.com/tedx
