The overriding goal of this project was to see if we could answer the question: Is it possible to call a surfboard the best in the world? Sure, it’s a flawed objective. A board’s performance is subjective. But acknowledging this, we invited 12 of the world’s best shapers to each create a board for an unidentified 6’0”, 80kg CT surfer. Fast-forward some months and Julian Wilson was standing in the garage of a West Oz rental, opening two coffins full of cleanskin boards – no markings, no stickers, no pencil on the stringer, nothing identifiable – one from California, the other direct from Sydney. And so, Jules and his blank knife collection settled into West Oz. We had 36 coloured stickers created by artist Paul McNeil and we included surplus colours and numbers just in case Jules was superstitious around any digits or shades. And, Julian’s 10-day game of Who’s Who began. Four photographers, three filmers and one producer were tasked with the story telling. The surfing is a perfect example of the output Julian Wilson could deliver if he ever went without jersey (and his own boards, for that matter). Watch it above. Directed by: Sam McIntosh Produced by: Damien Fahrenfort Art direction: Shinya Dalby Filmed by: Toby Cregan, Jimmy Lees, Rick Jackovic (water footage) Edited by: Mike Pagan Still photography: Ryan Miller, Chris Gurney, Andy Staley Read more at http://stabmag.com/watch-stab-in-the-dark-starring-julian-wilson/#5SHiAlYvoULk4f1H.99

Welcome to the review of the Serial Keeler twin fin by Super Brand Surfboards. The Serial Keeler I have been riding is a stock 5'5 x 20 1/2 x 2 9/16 = 31.5L. I've been surfing the Serial Keeler for a few months now in a variety of conditions and been really surprised at just how capable this board truly is! While it performs amazingly and is at home in surf in the waist high range, it's in better and bigger waves where it really surprised me. The seems to be a bit more rocker out of the tail and also a vee off the tail, which seems to allow the board to put itself in steeper and more critical sections, and also allow you to do more vertical turns than your normal fish style boards which are generally quite flat out the exit. I rode the K2 twin keel by Future Fins and these felt great. A very firm fin as they are full glass construction, and they have a significant amount of hold without having a huge surface area to the fin. From www.superbranded.com.au The Serial Keeler is a brand new twin fin model for summer 2018 / 2019. Inspired by traditional twin fin design but with a slightly more modern take on it's outline and rails. This board loves to go fast! Stick a serial keeler under your arm and kill your summer doldrums! We recommend you ride this board with either the Futures K2 Keels or the FCS 2 performance keel fins for best results. Note that the Serial Keeler model comes standard with a swirl blank from core - no two are alike! Ian Reviews the NSP Elements Funboard Surfboard: https://www.boardshop.co.uk/brands/nsp The new 2018 NSP Elements Funboard surfboard...the clues in the name. The Funboard is a very versatile surfboard and has all the features in place to put a huge smile on your face while accelerating your progression. This forgiving shape is all about catching plenty of waves in surf of all types. The NSP Funboard is designed to suit a very wide range of abilities from first-timers to experienced surfers who don't get in the sea as much as they'd like. The boards shape is all about fast paddling early wave entry and an ability to turn and really perform under the right feet. The Elements Funboard has a rounded dolphin style nose which keeps the volume under your chest which keeps it stable and a breeze to paddle and catch waves early. The deck is domed so the board carries its volume centrally keeping the rails nice and sensitive and the rounded pintail is pulled in giving real control in bottom turns and cutbacks. The brilliant Funboard is the ideal step-up board for the surfer who has nailed down all the basics on a foamy or Mal and is looking to purchase their first "proper" surfboard to really advance their skills. Teens and adults will love the lightweight construction and manoeuvrability of the Elements Funboard. This amazing combination of amazing value, lightweight durability and real performance makes the Funboard one of the most popular in the NSP stable for progressing and fine-tuning skills. These NSP surfboards are constructed with and EPS Secure Cell core which is then wrapped in lightweight fibreglass, HDT vacuum moulded and finished with a durable gel coat skin. Lightweight and tough perfect for anyone, beginner to advanced. We're happy to consider taking your old board as a trade in against a new NSP, so why not fire us an email with some good quality photos and an honest appraisal of the condition of your board (dings and repairs) and we'll get back to you with a provisional valuation. Welcome to the review of the Hippy Fling by Super Brand Surfboards. The Hippy Fling that I’ve been riding is 5’6 x 20 1/4 x 2 1/2 - 31L I’ve been surfing the Hippy Fling for a while now and been able to surf the board in a really wide range of conditions from very marginal 1ft dribble, through to quite fun waves in the 3-4ft range. The wide outline and volume in the front end of the Hippy Fling makes getting into waves and getting pace up quickly really easy, especially in weak and average conditions. But the hip and narrowed tail block allows you to still push the board when you get a section present itself, or for surfing vertically or in the pocket. The Hippy Fling has been great for those conditions when you wouldn’t normally bother going out, or if you want to battle with mals and other high volume boards in small waves and in crowded line ups. Here is what www.superbranded.com.au had to say about the board: The Hippy Fling is based off our best selling small wave board - The Fling. Some of our team riders were requesting a fling with a bit more of a pulled in tail to allow for more high performance turns in the pocket. Sparrow decided to try blending the tried and tested outline and concaves of the Fling with a pulled in tail shape similar to the Unit. The end result is a board that is easy to paddle and catch waves on but still turns on a dime! Ride in 5-7” shorter and 2-4 Litres more than your shortboard. In the Hippy Fling I rode the F8 by Futures Fins which is a balanced fin, and has a ride number of 5.2. This is not a fin I would normally ride in this board, but the board had so much natural speed that this fin felt really good. The Gamma is the mind of an 11 time World Champion distilled into one shape, built in two different ways, each one brand new. Surfboard reviews are great for grasping how a surfboard might feel under your feet based on how it feels to someone else when under their feet, but for the Gamma review, any feet wouldn't do, so we decided to put it under the best feet we could find - Kelly's. The Helium Gamma is so light it shocks you and so responsive it talks to you. Its bendy and springy but ridged - firm enough for Kelly to load up full force for maximum drive and light enough to whip around with complete quickness. The LFT Gamma is different. It has more weight to it. Its more reassuring under foot and works best in long and lined up walls, or when sizable surf requires some extra confidence. It's firm and forceful. Just like Kelly on a long line at Jeffreys Bay or Rincon. The LFT Gamma is best at controlling the speed a powerful wave gives you, and the Helium Gamma is best at creating speed when a weak wave isn't helping. Kelly loves both. So do we. And so will you. The Gamma is built in both Helium and LFT at surf shops everywhere.

The Superbrand "Magic Mix" is a legit everyday driver and I really enjoyed this board. It has the speed in the small waves and felt solid under my feet in waves well over head. I think this board is very versatile and surfs exactly like Superbrand describes on their website. he "Magic Mix" is a mix between The Toy (small wave Groveler) and the Vapors model (Daily Driver) which is the perfect balance between the two for a wave range of 2-6. Here is what the Superbrand website has to say about the Magic Mix; Aptly named, the Magic Mix is a blend of all the magic elements that go into some of our most popular boards. Super versatile, the Magic Mix excels in surf from knee high to overhead and burgers to barrels. Developed in Coolangatta, Australia and tested throughout the world, the Magic Mix is sure to be your day-to-day go to surfboard. • A “magic mix” between the popular Vapors and Toy models • Slight width in the nose makes for increased paddling power • Single to double concave bottom with flat tail for performance in myriad conditions • Medium rocker throughout with a late flip in the nose for tight pocket surfing • Tri fin setup with rounded squash tail • Medium, forgiving rails • 4-ounce bottom, 5-ounce deck lightweight glassing available

Is it possible to call a surfboard, or a shaper, the best in the world? There’s no way to answer either of these questions definitively… But, we can get damn close. How? By commissioning 13 of the world’s best shapers to deliver their top line, high performance boards (sans any recognisable logos), and having one of the world’s best high performance surfers test-drive them. The catch? Neither shapers nor surfer knew the others’ identity. No logos, no brand association, no preconceived notions: Just one of the world’s best surfers and a pile of nameless magic. Is it a flawed concept? Absolutely. But, it is the least subjective platform we’ve got. Music courtesy of Third Eye Stimuli Records: http://bit.ly/2elRqKx

Ian Reviews the Pukas x Christenson Pegaso surfboard: https://www.boardshop.co.uk/brands/pukas?style=2002 The Christenson Pegaso surfboard crafted by the magic hands of Chris Christenson. The Pegaso has a few tricks up it's sleeve and is way more than a 'cruisy' twin fin. A Christenson team rider favourite, the Pegaso encourages a more vertical approach to surfing and while it still has that 'fast n fun' twinnie feel it has a lot more composure in better waves and can be snapped around in the critical part of the wave. What's not to like..you're getting a fast twin fin which can be surfed aggressively in the pocket and still has that awesome glide and drive synonymous with twinnies. The Pegaso is a twin fin for modern times, a magic little board that you can take on your travels or use at home. Blistering speed and surprising performance in anything from knee high to well overhead conditions. Chris suggests ordering your Pegaso 3-4 inches longer than your regular Fish and 3-4 inches shorter than your daily driver or performance shortboard. Chris Christenson was born and raised in Southern California and when he wasn't surfing the local beachies between Seal Beach and Newport Beach he was probably up to his knees in fresh powder at his grandparents cabin in the mountains. Chris lists motorcycles, golf, live music and fishing as his other muses, but his true vocation was shaping surfboards which was influenced by his then neighbour Skip Frye and began with a 6 year apprenticeship with the legendary shaper Dick Brewer. Chris has an unmatched reputation for his ability to shape all types of surfboard; from big wave Guns to longboards, performance shortboards and of course Fish. Brad Gerlach, Greg Long, Rusty Long, the Walsh brothers have ridden his Guns at some of the most demanding waves and surfers Scotty Stopnik and Sterling Spencer have ridden his longboards and shortboards respectively. We regard this as a bit of a coup to stock Christenson surfboards adding another premium and world renowned brand to our portfolio. Boardshop is happy to consider taking your old or unwanted board as a trade-in against a brand new Christenson shape, so If you have any questions about this we'd be delighted to answer them and advise on any potential board choices or enquiries you might have, just drop us an email to [email protected] or call us on 0044 (0) 1243 674250. Ian Reviews the Lib Tech Pickup Stick surfboard: https://www.boardshop.co.uk/brands/lib-tech?style=1950 The Lib tech Pickup Stick surfboard has arrived as the 'mid length' resurgence continues! The Pickup Stick perfectly bridges the gap between shortboards and longboards. You're getting all the benefits of paddle speed and early wave entry that the mid length brings along with and ability to execute shortboard style manovers thanks to the smooth and flowing outline and a set of clever concaves including a tear-drop in the nose for the odd cheater-five! The Lib Tech Pickup Stick could find a place in just about any surfers quiver from beginners just ditching the foamie, guys and girls who live away from the coast and don't get enough wave time, right up to experienced surfers who just want to make the most out of small weak conditions or compete with the pack in crowded line-ups. Could surfboard construction Nirvana actually be here? As surfers we've all dreamed about owning a high performance surfboard with all the positive attributes of a traditional PU board but with none of the inherent fragility that comes with this construction. Lib Tech are about to change everything you know about surfboards and everything you thought was possible in surfboard construction. Using 31 brand-new components to the surf industry and calling on 30 years of experience constructing environmentally friendly surfboards, skateboards and snowboards, it was inevitable that Lib Tech were going to produce some remarkable surfboards using this ground breaking, environmentally friendly manufacturing process. Each of the Lib Tech surfboards is handcrafted in the USA with an unwavering focus on building THE toughest high performance surfboards in the world with a commitment to operating in an environmentally responsible manner. The construction process uses a Nitrogen cell Foam (25-40% recycled content) core for maximum strength and pop. The foam is closed cell, completely waterproof and won't absorb water. Hexzylon Fibre Foam Skin, this is a smooth, strong, impact and ding resistant layer with the signature Hex pattern. Next comes the unique Woven Basalt Fibre which is additive free super strong and resists heel dents. The Bio-Matrix Resin is super strong and environmentally friendly with the best flex qualities of traditional PU and a longer lifespan than Epoxy. Lib Tech surfboards are fitted with the lightest and toughest fin boxes on the market. They also use Sprock Blocks at the tail to add even more durability to the most fragile areas on the board. Even the leash plug has been given the same attention with 6061 T6 Aircraft aluminium pins and lightweight fibre composite cups. Boardshop is happy to consider trading in your old board against a new board, so If you have any questions about this we'd be delighted to answer them and advise on any potential board choices or enquiries you might have, just drop us an email to [email protected] or call us on 0044 (0) 1243 674250.
