Dynamic sql table name variable

This is one of the sql questions that is very commonly asked. I have a web page with a textbox. When I enter a table name in the textbox and when I click "Load Data" button, we want to retrieve data from that respective table and display it on the page. Copy the SQL Script to create the tables from my blog using the link below http://csharp-video-tutorials.blogspot.com/2017/04/dynamic-sql-table-name-variable.html Create the following stored procedure. Notice we are passing table name as a parameter to the stored prcoedure. In the body of the stored procedure we are concatenating strings to build our dynamic sql statement. In our previous videos we discussed that this open doors for SQL injection. Create procedure spDynamicTableName @TableName nvarchar(100) As Begin Declare @sql nvarchar(max) Set @sql = 'Select * from ' + @TableName Execute sp_executesql @sql End So the obvious question that comes to our mind is, why are we not creating parameterised sql statement instead. The answers is we can't. SQL Server does not allow table names and column names to be passed as parameters. Notice in the example below, we are creating a parameterised query with @TabName as a parameter. When we execute the following code, the procedure gets created successfully. Create procedure spDynamicTableName1 @TableName nvarchar(100) As Begin Declare @sql nvarchar(max) Set @sql = 'Select * from @TabName' Execute sp_executesql @sql, N'@TabName nvarchar(100)', @TabName = @TableName End But when we try to execute it we get an error - Must declare the table variable "@TabName" Execute spDynamicTableName1 N'Countries' Add a Web Page to the project that we have been working with in our previous video. Name it "DynamicTableName.aspx". Copy and paste the HTML from my blog using the link below http://csharp-video-tutorials.blogspot.com/2017/04/dynamic-sql-table-name-variable.html Copy and paste the code from my blog in the code-behind page http://csharp-video-tutorials.blogspot.com/2017/04/dynamic-sql-table-name-variable.html At this point, run the application and type the following text in the "Table Name" textbox and click "Load Data" button. Notice "SalesDB" database is dropped. Our application is prone to SQL injection as we have implemented dynamic sql in our stored procedure by concatenating strings instead of using parameters. Employees; Drop database SalesDB One way to prevent SQL injection in this case is by using SQL Server built-in function - QUOTENAME(). We will discuss QUOTENAME() function in detail in our next video. For now understand that by default, this function wraps that string that is passed to it in a pair of brackets. SELECT QUOTENAME('Employees') returns [Employees] Modify the stored procedure to use QUOTENAME() function as shown below. Alter procedure spDynamicTableName @TableName nvarchar(100) As Begin Declare @sql nvarchar(max) Set @sql = 'Select * from ' + QUOTENAME(@TableName) Execute sp_executesql @sql End At this point, type the following text in the "Table Name" textbox and click "Load Data" button. Notice you will see a message - Invalid object name 'Employees; Drop database SalesDB'. Also "SalesDB" database is not dropped. Employees; Drop database SalesDB The entire text in "Table Name" textbox is wrapped in a pair of brackets by the QUOTENAME function and is treated as table name. Since we do have a table with the specified name, we get the error - Invalid object name.

There are several ways of finding the nth highest salary. By the end of this video, we will be able to answer all the following questions as well. How to find nth highest salary in SQL Server using a Sub-Query How to find nth highest salary in SQL Server using a CTE How to find the 2nd, 3rd or 15th highest salary Let's use the following Employees table for this demo Use the following script to create Employees table Create table Employees ( ID int primary key identity, FirstName nvarchar(50), LastName nvarchar(50), Gender nvarchar(50), Salary int ) GO Insert into Employees values ('Ben', 'Hoskins', 'Male', 70000) Insert into Employees values ('Mark', 'Hastings', 'Male', 60000) Insert into Employees values ('Steve', 'Pound', 'Male', 45000) Insert into Employees values ('Ben', 'Hoskins', 'Male', 70000) Insert into Employees values ('Philip', 'Hastings', 'Male', 45000) Insert into Employees values ('Mary', 'Lambeth', 'Female', 30000) Insert into Employees values ('Valarie', 'Vikings', 'Female', 35000) Insert into Employees values ('John', 'Stanmore', 'Male', 80000) GO To find the highest salary it is straight forward. We can simply use the Max() function as shown below. Select Max(Salary) from Employees To get the second highest salary use a sub query along with Max() function as shown below. Select Max(Salary) from Employees where Salary [ (Select Max(Salary) from Employees) To find nth highest salary using Sub-Query SELECT TOP 1 SALARY FROM ( SELECT DISTINCT TOP N SALARY FROM EMPLOYEES ORDER BY SALARY DESC ) RESULT ORDER BY SALARY To find nth highest salary using CTE WITH RESULT AS ( SELECT SALARY, DENSE_RANK() OVER (ORDER BY SALARY DESC) AS DENSERANK FROM EMPLOYEES ) SELECT TOP 1 SALARY FROM RESULT WHERE DENSERANK = N To find 2nd highest salary we can use any of the above queries. Simple replace N with 2. Similarly, to find 3rd highest salary, simple replace N with 3. Please Note: On many of the websites, you may have seen that, the following query can be used to get the nth highest salary. The below query will only work if there are no duplicates. WITH RESULT AS ( SELECT SALARY, ROW_NUMBER() OVER (ORDER BY SALARY DESC) AS ROWNUMBER FROM EMPLOYEES ) SELECT SALARY FROM RESULT WHERE ROWNUMBER = 3

Write a sql query to transpose rows to columns. Using PIVOT operator we can very easily transform rows to columns. Select Country, City1, City2, City3 From ( Select Country, City, 'City'+ cast(row_number() over(partition by Country order by Country) as varchar(10)) ColumnSequence from Countries ) Temp pivot ( max(City) for ColumnSequence in (City1, City2, City3) ) Piv

Best Way to Write Basic SQL Queries

13:33
SQL Server Query writing strategies is something I have yet to find in any book. When enthusiastic SQL students do this, they experience a revelation. The number of errors drops significantly and the speed at writing complex queries increases immediately. Knowing how to narrow down what we are looking for amongst a vast list of choices helps immensely. Grabbing the right tables first and then the fields second is akin to grabbing the right menu before ordering an item from it. In fact, one student named Tim took this back to his team of SQL developers and they immediately implemented this process. We are all used to following steps. Most of the time, actions are sequential from top to bottom or left to right. Other times we complete things in phases. The two phases we are going to use in this exercise apply to joining tables. This is easy to implement as we only need remember to organize first and clean up second. When visiting a new restaurant, we will ask to see the menu, because we want to see all they have to offer. The odds are that we might be interested in half of the items, but only need a few dishes for our group at the table. Looking at the menu is like starting a query with a ‘SELECT *’ statement. Once we have looked at all the fields, we narrow our choice(s) to only the items we want at the time. Sometimes restaurants have multiple menus. My favorite restaurant has a kids’ menu, an adult menu, a gluten-free menu and a drink menu. These menus were each gathered at our table. Ultimately, in my head, a selection was narrowed to what was needed. Phase I: Organize. When building a new query from many tables, we often find ourselves wondering, “Where do I start?” First, lay the steps out by identifying which tables contain the essential data. Second, get all the table joins working with a basic ‘SELECT *’ statement. Third, add any basic filtering criteria. Phase II: Itemize. Once all joins and criteria, such as SELECT, FROM and WHERE are working, we are ready for Phase II. This entails going back and changing our ‘SELECT *’ to an itemized SELECT field list as the final step. Let’s explore how this two-phase process of Organize and then Itemize can be a big time-saver. We are going to use one of the challenges from the last lab. In Lab 3.2 (Outer Joins), Skill Check 2, we needed to get four fields from two different tables. If we were to list all four desired fields and test one table at time, we will get an error as seen on the right side of the figure below. In the figure below we write a SELECT statement and part of the FROM clause. When completed, the FROM clause will have two tables, but for now we just want to get the Location table working. By using the ‘SELECT *’ strategy, we remove any possible errors from line 1. From there, we can focus on the more complicated logic used for joining tables together. We can add tables one at a time until everything is working. This is the Organize phase. NOTE: SELECT * never results in an Error message stating “invalid column name”, however; a SELECT list with itemized field(s) can have this error. After our query is organized and working, we can go back and itemize the SELECT field list to display only the fields that are necessary. This is done during Phase II (Itemize). The steps for this system are broken down as follows: Since SELECT is always the first statement in a query, it’s natural to want to write the field names before writing the FROM clause. However; we can save time and trouble by using the ‘*’ until the entire query is working properly. When this is complete, it is very easy to itemize the field list, with the confidence of knowing it will not cause any problems. Exercise: Simple membership for a club: Table1 (id_Member,name_Member, email_member, title, age, company) Table2 (id_Club,club_name, club_Location, address) Table3 (id_club, id_member,membership_date) Q1: Show all member names, email, age, and company from Table1 Q2: Show all club name, location, and address data Q3: Show member name, club name, club location (hint: Use joins and all 3 tables) You can find all other classes related to this video here: http://www.joes2pros.com/joes2pros/Course/Introduction_To_Microsoft_SQL_Server Enroll Today & Get the First Month for only $1! Difference between rows and range

05:52
range vs rows in sql server difference between rows clause and range clause in sql server range clause vs rows clause in sql server sql server running total query running total example in sql server In this video we will discuss the difference between rows and range in SQL Server. This is continuation to Part 116. Please watch Part 116 from SQL Server tutorial before proceeding. Let us understand the difference with an example. We will use the following Employees table in this demo. SQL Script to create the Employees table Create Table Employees ( Id int primary key, Name nvarchar(50), Salary int ) Go Insert Into Employees Values (1, 'Mark', 1000) Insert Into Employees Values (2, 'John', 2000) Insert Into Employees Values (3, 'Pam', 3000) Insert Into Employees Values (4, 'Sara', 4000) Insert Into Employees Values (5, 'Todd', 5000) Go Calculate the running total of Salary and display it against every employee row The following query calculates the running total. We have not specified an explicit value for ROWS or RANGE clause. SELECT Name, Salary, SUM(Salary) OVER(ORDER BY Salary) AS RunningTotal FROM Employees So the above query is using the default value which is RANGE BETWEEN UNBOUNDED PRECEDING AND CURRENT ROW This means the above query can be re-written using an explicit value for ROWS or RANGE clause as shown below. SELECT Name, Salary, SUM(Salary) OVER(ORDER BY Salary RANGE BETWEEN UNBOUNDED PRECEDING AND CURRENT ROW) AS RunningTotal FROM Employees We can also achieve the same result, by replacing RANGE with ROWS SELECT Name, Salary, SUM(Salary) OVER(ORDER BY Salary ROWS BETWEEN UNBOUNDED PRECEDING AND CURRENT ROW) AS RunningTotal FROM Employees What is the difference between ROWS and RANGE To understand the difference we need some duplicate values for the Salary column in the Employees table. Execute the following UPDATE script to introduce duplicate values in the Salary column Update Employees set Salary = 1000 where Id = 2 Update Employees set Salary = 3000 where Id = 4 Go Now execute the following query. Notice that we get the running total as expected. SELECT Name, Salary, SUM(Salary) OVER(ORDER BY Salary ROWS BETWEEN UNBOUNDED PRECEDING AND CURRENT ROW) AS RunningTotal FROM Employees The following query uses RANGE instead of ROWS SELECT Name, Salary, SUM(Salary) OVER(ORDER BY Salary RANGE BETWEEN UNBOUNDED PRECEDING AND CURRENT ROW) AS RunningTotal FROM Employees Notice we don't get the running total as expected. So, the main difference between ROWS and RANGE is in the way duplicate rows are treated. ROWS treat duplicates as distinct values, where as RANGE treats them as a single entity. All together side by side. The following query shows how running total changes 1. When no value is specified for ROWS or RANGE clause 2. When RANGE clause is used explicitly with it's default value 3. When ROWS clause is used instead of RANGE clause SELECT Name, Salary, SUM(Salary) OVER(ORDER BY Salary) AS [Default], SUM(Salary) OVER(ORDER BY Salary RANGE BETWEEN UNBOUNDED PRECEDING AND CURRENT ROW) AS [Range], SUM(Salary) OVER(ORDER BY Salary ROWS BETWEEN UNBOUNDED PRECEDING AND CURRENT ROW) AS [Rows] FROM Employees Text version of the video http://csharp-video-tutorials.blogspot.com/2015/10/difference-between-rows-and-range.html Slides http://csharp-video-tutorials.blogspot.com/2015/10/difference-between-rows-and-range_8.html All SQL Server Text Articles http://csharp-video-tutorials.blogspot.com/p/free-sql-server-video-tutorials-for.html All SQL Server Slides http://csharp-video-tutorials.blogspot.com/p/sql-server.html All Dot Net and SQL Server Tutorials in English https://www.youtube.com/user/kudvenkat/playlists?view=1&sort=dd All Dot Net and SQL Server Tutorials in Arabic https://www.youtube.com/c/KudvenkatArabic/playlists

Difference between rank dense rank and row number in SQL

04:43
row_number vs rank vs dense_rank in sql server dense_rank vs rank vs row_number sql server rank dense_rank row_number in sql server In this video we will discuss the similarities and difference between RANK, DENSE_RANK and ROW_NUMBER functions in SQL Server. Similarities between RANK, DENSE_RANK and ROW_NUMBER functions Returns an increasing integer value starting at 1 based on the ordering of rows imposed by the ORDER BY clause (if there are no ties) ORDER BY clause is required PARTITION BY clause is optional When the data is partitioned, the integer value is reset to 1 when the partition changes SQL Script to create the Employees table Create Table Employees ( Id int primary key, Name nvarchar(50), Gender nvarchar(10), Salary int ) Go Insert Into Employees Values (1, 'Mark', 'Male', 6000) Insert Into Employees Values (2, 'John', 'Male', 8000) Insert Into Employees Values (3, 'Pam', 'Female', 4000) Insert Into Employees Values (4, 'Sara', 'Female', 5000) Insert Into Employees Values (5, 'Todd', 'Male', 3000) Notice that no two employees in the table have the same salary. So all the 3 functions RANK, DENSE_RANK and ROW_NUMBER produce the same increasing integer value when ordered by Salary column. SELECT Name, Salary, Gender, ROW_NUMBER() OVER (ORDER BY Salary DESC) AS RowNumber, RANK() OVER (ORDER BY Salary DESC) AS [Rank], DENSE_RANK() OVER (ORDER BY Salary DESC) AS DenseRank FROM Employees You will only see the difference when there ties. Now let's include duplicate values for Salary column. To do this First delete existing data from the Employees table DELETE FROM Employees Insert new rows with duplicate valuse for Salary column Insert Into Employees Values (1, 'Mark', 'Male', 8000) Insert Into Employees Values (2, 'John', 'Male', 8000) Insert Into Employees Values (3, 'Pam', 'Female', 8000) Insert Into Employees Values (4, 'Sara', 'Female', 4000) Insert Into Employees Values (5, 'Todd', 'Male', 3500) Notice 3 employees have the same salary 8000. When you execute the following query you can clearly see the difference between RANK, DENSE_RANK and ROW_NUMBER functions. SELECT Name, Salary, Gender, ROW_NUMBER() OVER (ORDER BY Salary DESC) AS RowNumber, RANK() OVER (ORDER BY Salary DESC) AS [Rank], DENSE_RANK() OVER (ORDER BY Salary DESC) AS DenseRank FROM Employees Difference between RANK, DENSE_RANK and ROW_NUMBER functions ROW_NUMBER : Returns an increasing unique number for each row starting at 1, even if there are duplicates. RANK : Returns an increasing unique number for each row starting at 1. When there are duplicates, same rank is assigned to all the duplicate rows, but the next row after the duplicate rows will have the rank it would have been assigned if there had been no duplicates. So RANK function skips rankings if there are duplicates. DENSE_RANK : Returns an increasing unique number for each row starting at 1. When there are duplicates, same rank is assigned to all the duplicate rows but the DENSE_RANK function will not skip any ranks. This means the next row after the duplicate rows will have the next rank in the sequence. This means a given student can be enrolled into many courses and a given course can have many students enrolled. Below is the question asked in an interview for SQL Server Developer role. Write a SQL script to insert data into StudentCourses table. Here are the rules that your script should follow. 1. There will be 2 inputs for the script Student Name - The name of the student who wants to enroll into a course Course Name - The name of the course the student wants to enroll into 2. If the student is already in the Students table, then use that existing Student Id. If the student is not already in the Students table, then a row for that student must be inserted into the Students table, and use that new student id. 3. Along the same lines, if the course is already in the Courses table, then use that existing Course Id. If the course is not already in the Courses table, then a row for that course must be inserted into the Courses table, and use that new course id. 4. There should be no duplicate student course enrollments, i.e a given student must not be enrolled in the same course twice. For example, Tom must not be enrolled in C# course twice. Answer : To avoid duplicate student course enrollments create a composite primary key on StudentId and CourseId columns in StudentCourses table. With this composite primary key in place, if someone tries to enroll the same student in the same course again we get violation of primary key constraint error. Alter table StudentCourses Add Constraint PK_StudentCourses Primary Key Clustered (CourseId, StudentId) Here is the SQL script that inserts data into the 3 tables as expected Declare @StudentName nvarchar(50) = 'Sam' Declare @CourseName nvarchar(50) = 'SQL Server' Declare @StudentId int Declare @CourseId int -- If the student already exists, use the existing student ID Select @StudentId = Id from Students where StudentName = @StudentName -- If the course already exists, use the existing course ID Select @CourseId = Id from Courses where CourseName = @CourseName -- If the student does not exist in the Students table If (@StudentId is null) Begin -- Insert the student Insert into Students values(@StudentName) -- Get the Id of the student Select @StudentId = SCOPE_IDENTITY() End -- If the course does not exist in the Courses table If (@CourseId is null) Begin -- Insert the course Insert into Courses values(@CourseName) -- Get the Id of the course Select @CourseId = SCOPE_IDENTITY() End -- Insert StudentId & CourseId in StudentCourses table Insert into StudentCourses values(@StudentId, @CourseId) If required, we can very easily convert this into a stored procedure as shown below. Create procedure spInsertIntoStudentCourses @StudentName nvarchar(50), @CourseName nvarchar(50) as Begin Declare @StudentId int Declare @CourseId int Select @StudentId = Id from Students where StudentName = @StudentName Select @CourseId = Id from Courses where CourseName = @CourseName If (@StudentId is null) Begin Insert into Students values(@StudentName) Select @StudentId = SCOPE_IDENTITY() End If (@CourseId is null) Begin Insert into Courses values(@CourseName) Select @CourseId = SCOPE_IDENTITY() End Insert into StudentCourses values(@StudentId, @CourseId) End Use the following statement to execute the stored procedure Execute spInsertIntoStudentCourses 'Tom','C#'

TRY CONVERT function in SQL Server 2012

07:46
try convert function in sql sql server try_convert try_convert in sql server 2012 try convert sql try_parse vs try_convert sql server In this video we will discuss TRY_CONVERT function Difference between CONVERT and TRY_CONVERT functions Difference between TRY_PARSE and TRY_CONVERT functions TRY_CONVERT function Introduced in SQL Server 2012 Converts a value to the specified data type Returns NULL if the provided value cannot be converted to the specified data type If you request a conversion that is explicitly not permitted, then TRY_CONVERT fails with an error Syntax : TRY_CONVERT ( data_type, value, [style] ) Style parameter is optional. The range of acceptable values is determined by the target data_type. For the list of all possible values for style parameter, please visit the following MSDN article https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms187928.aspx Example : Convert string to INT. As the string can be converted to INT, the result will be 99 as expected. SELECT TRY_CONVERT(INT, '99') AS Result Example : Convert string to INT. The string cannot be converted to INT, so TRY_CONVERT returns NULL SELECT TRY_CONVERT(INT, 'ABC') AS Result Example : Converting an integer to XML is not explicitly permitted. so in this case TRY_CONVERT fails with an error SELECT TRY_CONVERT(XML, 10) AS Result If you want to provide a meaningful error message instead of NULL when the conversion fails, you can do so using CASE statement or IIF function. Example : Using CASE statement to provide a meaningful error message when the conversion fails. SELECT CASE WHEN TRY_CONVERT(INT, 'ABC') IS NULL THEN 'Conversion Failed' ELSE 'Conversion Successful' END AS Result Output : As the conversion fails, you will now get a message 'Conversion Failed' instead of NULL Example : Using IIF function to provide a meaningful error message when the conversion fails. SELECT IIF(TRY_CONVERT(INT, 'ABC') IS NULL, 'Conversion Failed', 'Conversion Successful') AS Result What is the difference between CONVERT and TRY_CONVERT CONVERT will result in an error if the conversion fails, where as TRY_CONVERT will return NULL instead of an error. Since ABC cannot be converted to INT, CONVERT will return an error SELECT CONVERT(INT, 'ABC') AS Result Since ABC cannot be converted to INT, TRY_CONVERT will return NULL instead of an error SELECT TRY_CONVERT(INT, 'ABC') AS Result Example : Using TRY_CONVERT() function with table data. We will use the following Employees table for this example. SQL Script to create Employees table Create table Employees ( Id int primary key identity, Name nvarchar(10), Age nvarchar(10) ) Go Insert into Employees values ('Mark', '40') Insert into Employees values ('John', '20') Insert into Employees values ('Amy', 'THIRTY') Insert into Employees values ('Ben', '21') Insert into Employees values ('Sara', 'FIFTY') Insert into Employees values ('David', '25') Go The data type of Age column is nvarchar. So string values like (THIRTY, FIFTY ) are also stored. Now, we want to write a query to convert the values in Age column to int and return along with the Employee name. Notice TRY_CONVERT function returns NULL for the rows where age cannot be converted to INT. SELECT Name, TRY_CONVERT(INT, Age) AS Age FROM Employees If you use CONVERT instead of TRY_CONVERT, the query fails with an error. SELECT NAME, CONVERT(INT, Age) AS Age FROM Employees The above query returns the following error Conversion failed when converting the nvarchar value 'THIRTY' to data type int. Difference between TRY_PARSE and TRY_CONVERT functions TRY_PARSE can only be used for converting from string to date/time or number data types where as TRY_CONVERT can be used for any general type conversions. For example, you can use TRY_CONVERT to convert a string to XML data type, where as you can do the same using TRY_PARSE Converting a string to XML data type using TRY_CONVERT SELECT TRY_CONVERT(XML, '[root][child/][/root]') AS [XML] Converting a string to XML data type using TRY_PARSE SELECT TRY_PARSE('[root][child/][/root]' AS XML) AS [XML] The above query will result in the following error Invalid data type xml in function TRY_PARSE Another difference is TRY_PARSE relies on the presence of .the .NET Framework Common Language Runtime (CLR) where as TRY_CONVERT does not. NTILE function in SQL Server

05:10
In this video we will discuss NTILE function in SQL Server NTILE function 1. Introduced in SQL Server 2005 2. ORDER BY Clause is required 3. PARTITION BY clause is optional 4. Distributes the rows into a specified number of groups 5. If the number of rows is not divisible by number of groups, you may have groups of two different sizes. 6. Larger groups come before smaller groups For example NTILE(2) of 10 rows divides the rows in 2 Groups (5 in each group) NTILE(3) of 10 rows divides the rows in 3 Groups (4 in first group, 3 in 2nd & 3rd group) Syntax : NTILE (Number_of_Groups) OVER (ORDER BY Col1, Col2, ...) SQL Script to create Employees table Create Table Employees ( Id int primary key, Name nvarchar(50), Gender nvarchar(10), Salary int ) Go Insert Into Employees Values (1, 'Mark', 'Male', 5000) Insert Into Employees Values (2, 'John', 'Male', 4500) Insert Into Employees Values (3, 'Pam', 'Female', 5500) Insert Into Employees Values (4, 'Sara', 'Female', 4000) Insert Into Employees Values (5, 'Todd', 'Male', 3500) Insert Into Employees Values (6, 'Mary', 'Female', 5000) Insert Into Employees Values (7, 'Ben', 'Male', 6500) Insert Into Employees Values (8, 'Jodi', 'Female', 7000) Insert Into Employees Values (9, 'Tom', 'Male', 5500) Insert Into Employees Values (10, 'Ron', 'Male', 5000) Go NTILE function without PARTITION BY clause : Divides the 10 rows into 3 groups. 4 rows in first group, 3 rows in the 2nd & 3rd group. SELECT Name, Gender, Salary, NTILE(3) OVER (ORDER BY Salary) AS [Ntile] FROM Employees What if the specified number of groups is GREATER THAN the number of rows NTILE function will try to create as many groups as possible with one row in each group. With 10 rows in the table, NTILE(11) will create 10 groups with 1 row in each group. SELECT Name, Gender, Salary, NTILE(11) OVER (ORDER BY Salary) AS [Ntile] FROM Employees NTILE function with PARTITION BY clause : When the data is partitioned, NTILE function creates the specified number of groups with in each partition. The following query partitions the data into 2 partitions (Male & Female). NTILE(3) creates 3 groups in each of the partitions. SELECT Name, Gender, Salary, NTILE(3) OVER (PARTITION BY GENDER ORDER BY Salary) AS [Ntile] FROM Employees Link for all dot net and sql server video tutorial playlists https://www.youtube.com/user/kudvenkat/playlists?sort=dd&view=1 Link for slides, code samples and text version of the video http://csharp-video-tutorials.blogspot.com/2015/10/ntile-function-in-sql-server.html

VLOOKUP or SUM Not Working? Convert Text to Date? (Excel Text to Columns)

04:55
This tutorial uses Excel's Text to Columns feature to address two common Excel problems. Problem 1: VLOOKUP formula doesn't work One common reason for your VLOOKUP formulas or SUMIFS formulas not working is that Excel doesn't recognize the numbers as numbers. It sees them as text. Even if you change the cell custom formatting from General to a Number, your formulas still don't work. This is a common issue when you import data to Excel from SAP or Oracle systems. Problem 2: Dates are not recognized as dates in Excel. - sometimes imported dates from other systems to Excel are seen as text or number but not as a date. Excel's text to column feature can convert these super fast into dates. ⯆ DOWNLOAD the workbook & read the article: https://www.xelplus.com/excel-text-to-columns/ LINKS to related videos: VLOOKUP - https://youtu.be/hwL6KKJP-_I ★ My Online Excel Courses ► https://courses.xelplus.com ✉ Subscribe & get my TOP 10 Excel formulas e-book for free https://www.xelplus.com/free-ebook/ EXCEL RESOURCES I Recommend: https://www.xelplus.com/resources/ Get Office 365: https://microsoft.msafflnk.net/15OEg Microsoft Surface: https://microsoft.msafflnk.net/c/1327040/451518/7593 GEAR Camera: https://amzn.to/2FLiFho Screen recorder: http://techsmith.pxf.io/c/1252781/347799/5161 Microphone: https://amzn.to/2DVKstA Lights: http://amzn.to/2eJKg1U More resources on my Amazon page: https://www.amazon.com/shop/leilagharani Note: This description contains affiliate links, which means at no additional cost to you, we will receive a small commission if you make a purchase using the links. Read from (SELECT) Database table - SQLite3 with Python 3 part 3

11:20
In the previous tutorials, we've covered creating a database and populating one, now we need to learn how to read from the database. Reading from a database is where the power of using something like SQLite over a flat file starts to make sense. While we can query the entire table, we can instead just query a single column, or even based on specific row values. There are many ways to get data into DataTables. If the data is small you can retrieve all the data at once and the processing (i.e paging, searching, ordering) is done on the client-side. On the other hand if the database data is large, server-side processing can be enabled. With server-side processing enabled, all paging, searching, ordering actions that DataTables performs are handed off to the server. In this video we will discuss retrieving all the data at once. The datatables plugin performs all the processing (i.e paging, searching, ordering etc) on the client-side. We want to retrieve data from the following database table tblEmployee. The database data should then be displayed using jQuery datatables plugin

MySQL 32 - FLOAT and DOUBLE Data Types

06:23
FLOAT and DOUBLE data types are data types that can be used to store numbers that can include decimal numbers. They are specifically used to store estimates. What do I mean? I mean that the precision of a FLOAT or DOUBLE value can be lost when doing math. The data types are only capable of maintaining a certain level of precision. The level of precision is usually adequate for most mathematical operations. If you need to store exact data, you will want to look into using the INT or DECIMAL data type instead. The numbers stored in a FLOAT or DOUBLE column are called floating point numbers, we'll see why in just a moment. Why are they called floating point numbers? let's look at a number. 150. This number could be represented as 150, or it could be represented as 1.5 * 10^2, or 1.5e2. With floating point numbers, scientific notation is used. These numbers are called floating point numbers because the decimal can float to different spots as we change the exponent. This means that the data type needs to store the number, how many decimal the number needs moved, and a sign bit. The benefit of floating point numbers is that they allow us to store pretty huge numbers. The down side is that they are not storing values exactly because they are limited in size. This means that only a certain level of precision is to be expected from a floating point data type. If you remember from the video of DECIMAL, precision is the number of digits in a number. As long as the precision for one of these data types exceeds the need for your specific data, the data type can work fine. For example, if you are storing a number like 15 trillion, you don't have to worry as much with precision as your number does not contain a lot of digits. This number can be represented as 1.5 x 10^13. This is a lot different than trying to store 1.5534534534 x10^13. Now we know both of these data types do not maintain a high number of digits correctly, but what is the difference between FLOAT and DOUBLE. The difference is the amount of storage they take up. Float takes up 4 bytes while DOUBLE takes up 8. The benefit in DOUBLE is that because it has more room to store data, it has a higher level of precision and can store bigger numbers. Now, what level of precision can you expect from either of these? FLOAT around 7 and DOUBLE around 15. Now, these data types are obnoxious because the exact values depend on your operating system and in general these monsters cannot be trusted. Especially when you start doing math with different numbers. In general, it is recommended to use the DOUBLE data type to have a higher level of precision and calculations in MySQL are done with DOUBLE. Always remember… prepare for trouble, make it double. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Support me! http://www.patreon.com/calebcurry Subscribe to my newsletter: http://bit.ly/JoinCCNewsletter Donate!: http://bit.ly/DonateCTVM2. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~Additional Links~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ More content: http://CalebCurry.com Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/CalebTheVideoMaker Google+: https://plus.google.com/+CalebTheVideoMaker2 Twitter: http://twitter.com/calebCurry Amazing Web Hosting - http://bit.ly/ccbluehost (The best web hosting for a cheap price!)

For example, the following "UPDATE" query, updates a set of rows that matches the condition in the "WHERE" clause at the same time. Update tblProductSales Set UnitPrice = 50 where ProductId = 101 However, if there is ever a need to process the rows, on a row-by-row basis, then cursors are your choice. Cursors are very bad for performance, and should be avoided always. Most of the time, cursors can be very easily replaced using joins. There are different types of cursors in sql server as listed below. We will talk about the differences between these cursor types in a later video session. 1. Forward-Only 2. Static 3. Keyset 4. Dynamic Let us now look at a simple example of using sql server cursor to process one row at time. We will be using tblProducts and tblProductSales tables, for this example. On my machine, there are 400,000 records in tblProducts and 600,000 records in tblProductSales tables. If you want to learn about generating huge amounts of random test data, please watch Part - 61 in sql server video tutorial. The link is below. http://www.youtube.com/user/kudvenkat/videos?flow=grid&view=1 Cursor Example: Let us say, I want to update the UNITPRICE column in tblProductSales table, based on the following criteria 1. If the ProductName = 'Product - 55', Set Unit Price to 55 2. If the ProductName = 'Product - 65', Set Unit Price to 65 3. If the ProductName is like 'Product - 100%', Set Unit Price to 1000 For the SQL code samples used in the demo please visit my blog at the following link http://csharp-video-tutorials.blogspot.com/2013/01/cursors-in-sql-server-part-63.html The cursor will loop thru each row in tblProductSales table. As there are 600,000 rows, to be processed on a row-by-row basis, it takes around 40 to 45 seconds on my machine. We can achieve this very easily using a join, and this will significantly increase the performance. We will discuss about this in our next video session. To check if the rows have been correctly updated, please use the following query. Select Name, UnitPrice from tblProducts join tblProductSales on tblProducts.Id = tblProductSales.ProductId where (Name='Product - 55' or Name='Product - 65' or Name like 'Product - 100%')

Rollup in SQL Server

09:01
sql server group by rollup sql server 2008 group by rollup group by with rollup example sql rollup example sql server rollup example sql server 2008 rollup examples rollup clause in sql server rollup function in sql server ROLLUP in SQL Server is used to do aggregate operation on multiple levels in hierarchy. Let us understand Rollup in SQL Server with examples. We will use the following Employees table for the examples in this video. Retrieve Salary by country along with grand total There are several ways to achieve this. The easiest way is by using Rollup with GroupBy. SELECT Country, SUM(Salary) AS TotalSalary FROM Employees GROUP BY ROLLUP(Country) The above query can also be rewritten as shown below SELECT Country, SUM(Salary) AS TotalSalary FROM Employees GROUP BY Country WITH ROLLUP We can also use UNION ALL operator along with GROUP BY SELECT Country, SUM(Salary) AS TotalSalary FROM Employees GROUP BY Country UNION ALL SELECT NULL, SUM(Salary) AS TotalSalary FROM Employees We can also use Grouping Sets to achieve the same result SELECT Country, SUM(Salary) AS TotalSalary FROM Employees GROUP BY GROUPING SETS ( (Country), () ) Let's look at another example. Group Salary by Country and Gender. Also compute the Subtotal for Country level and Grand Total as shown below. Using ROLLUP with GROUP BY SELECT Country, Gender, SUM(Salary) AS TotalSalary FROM Employees GROUP BY ROLLUP(Country, Gender) OR SELECT Country, Gender, SUM(Salary) AS TotalSalary FROM Employees GROUP BY Country, Gender WITH ROLLUP Using UNION ALL with GROUP BY SELECT Country, Gender, SUM(Salary) AS TotalSalary FROM Employees GROUP BY Country, Gender UNION ALL SELECT Country, NULL, SUM(Salary) AS TotalSalary FROM Employees GROUP BY Country UNION ALL SELECT NULL, NULL, SUM(Salary) AS TotalSalary FROM Employees Using GROUPING SETS SELECT Country, Gender, SUM(Salary) AS TotalSalary FROM Employees GROUP BY GROUPING SETS ( (Country, Gender), (Country), () ) Text version of the video http://csharp-video-tutorials.blogspot.com/2015/09/rollup-in-sql-server.html Slides http://csharp-video-tutorials.blogspot.com/2015/09/rollup-in-sql-server_20.html All SQL Server Text Articles http://csharp-video-tutorials.blogspot.com/p/free-sql-server-video-tutorials-for.html All SQL Server Slides http://csharp-video-tutorials.blogspot.com/p/sql-server.html All Dot Net and SQL Server Tutorials in English https://www.youtube.com/user/kudvenkat/playlists?view=1&sort=dd All Dot Net and SQL Server Tutorials in Arabic https://www.youtube.com/c/KudvenkatArabic/playlists
