What happened to the Salton Sea in California? In my first travel documentary about this strange yet fascinating place in California's Imperial Valley, I explore the sea and surrounding communities of Bombay Beach, Slab City, East Jesus, and Salton City. The area was also the inspiration for the fictional desert town of Sandy Shores which appears in the popular video game Grand Theft Auto V and Grand Theft Auto Online. In the game, Trevor Philips acquires a small landing strip in the area which may be in reference to the Salton City airport. I encourage you to read more about the lake’s history and the current ecological crisis it has become. You can find an interesting article written by Ian James and Sammy Roth on USA Today here: https://www.usatoday.com/pages/interactives/salton-sea/the-dying-salton-sea. Thanks for watching! I hope to post more of these as I travel! ***CORRECTION*** The Salton Bay Yacht Club was demolished in 2000, not the 80's. Never Stop Exploring is produced by Kyle Frager. Amidst the nationwide focus on the drought in California, a major environmental and public health concern has once again been set in the shadow for the law makers of Sacramento. But for the Salton Sea - California’s largest lake and home to more than 425 bird species on the pacific flyway, time is running out. Time is ticking until 2017, when water allocations in accordance with the Quantification Settlement Agreement (2003) are significantly reduced and directly affect the Salton Sea. The Salton Sea is already more than 25% saltier than the Pacific Ocean, and with reduced water and rising salinity this region will no longer be able to support environmental life. To make matters worse, as the water level reduces and exposes years of agricultural runoff, giant dust storms have the potential to plague areas as far as Los Angeles, San Diego, and Northern Mexico. This surrounding region already has some of the worst rates of asthma in the state, and the socioeconomic suppressed immigrant working communities are suffering and have nowhere to move. This issue is not just about international bird populations and the environment, its about social justice, and rights to clean air. California is running out of time after decades of political indecisiveness and costly studies, something has to be done now to “Save Our Sea”. A short film project by Alex Cooke & Chris Norwood from Pitzer College Spring 2015.

Beyond Borders: A Worthy Investment? - Salton Sea, California Become a Beyond Borders Member https://www.patreon.com/beyond_borders LIKE / SHARE / COMMENT In this episode, host Erik Niel travels to the Salton Sea in Southern California to highlight the environmental catastrophe that looms over this accidental lake, and the surrounding area. Years of agricultural runoff have turned this mid-century resort into a decaying waste. As the sea evaporates, it threatens to release the toxic sediments from the runoff into the agricultural Imperial Valley via the Santa Ana winds. If this occurs, California may face perhaps the greatest manmade catastrophe in its history.

Salton Sea in 24 hours: Exploring the Area's Best Hikes, Food & Strange Attractions Salton Sea is a strange and unique place in Southern California that was once a resort area for celebrities but has now become somewhat of a wasteland. Many people don't take the time to explore it because of that, but I always recommend giving it a chance as there are a lot of fun things to see and do. Don't go in the summer though as it can be incredibly hot. Here are my recommendations for 24 hours spent at the Salton Sea. How the Salton Sea went from resorts to a 'public health disaster': http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-5839677/A-ghost-town-making-Salton-Sea-went-busy-resorts-public-health-disaster.html. Thanks for watching, subscribe for more videos: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCqi7z1Xa_8CBhQStlApH8ww?sub_confirmation=1 With sandy beaches and warm water year-round, Salton Sea in California was the perfect family getaway of the 1950s and 60s. It attracted Hollywood’s elite - Rock Hudson water-skied there, Frank Sinatra and Jerry Lewis visited their friend Guy Lombardo’s yacht which was moored there. The Beach Boys were members of the North Shore yacht club, Sonny Bono was a visitor and President Dwight Eisenhower golfed there.Business was booming - hotels, motels, casinos and yacht clubs popped up along the lake’s 116-mile shoreline helping to create enclaves including Bombay Beach and Salton City. Residents and developers quickly reaped the benefits of the influx.Back then it was called the ‘miracle in the desert’. Today, it is described as an ‘ecological nightmare and disaster’ - a ghost town in the making. The Salton Sea was accidentally created when in 1905 the Colorado River swelled, breached its levees and flooded into the Salton Sink desert valley. For two years the water flowed, creating the Salton Sea – a 15-mile by 35-mile freshwater lake 45miles outside of Palm Springs. By the 1970s it was in decline due to there being almost no rainfall, no way for the lake to drain and runoff water contaminated with pesticides from nearby farms flowed into it. Salt levels increased making it saltier than the Pacific Ocean, depleting oxygen levels in the water. Thousands of fish died annually and washed onto the shore where they shriveled up and decayed in the extreme heat.Where holidaymakers once sunbathed, the sand is littered with sun-bleached fish carcasses. On hot summer days when the temperature can reach up to 120F (48.8C), a pungent sulphur odor hangs in the air that can be smelled 150 miles away in Los Angeles. In short, the Salton Sea smells of rotten eggs. The once-bustling hotels are derelict, broken wooden frames of buildings stand in some spots as other structures are badly decaying with graffiti spray painted over the boarded-up windows and doors. But it isn’t just the smell and the ecological impact that people are concerned about. The most pressing issue for residents near the Salton Sea is the continued threat of toxic dust that sweeps up from the dry lakebed containing harmful pesticides, heavy metals and powdery-fine particles that are linked to asthma, respiratory diseases and even cancer. One in five children in Imperial County suffer from asthma and have lung related illnesses compared with a national average of 1 in 12, according to the latest government data. Dr. Tim Krantz, the recognized authority on the geography of the Salton Sea, said it is a ‘public health disaster’ in the making. Krantz, who served as the Salton Sea Database Program Director, said: ‘Our real concern changed from the ecology and the loss of that which is important, but our real focus became what’s going to happen to these toxic dry lakebed sediments once they are exposed to the desert winds?‘It will be an air quality disaster unparalleled in the world. California’s Salton Sea, the state’s largest inland body of water, formed when a dam broke and it stayed alive with agricultural water runoff. Today, it’s water supply has dried up, and the sea is dying. But, as NewsHour Weekend’s Christopher Booker first reported in July, 2018, the Salton Sea is finding new life as haven for artists.

Watch and read more here about Saving the Salton Sea: bit.ly/1zkPB40 It's hard to imagine that the Salton Sea was once considered a prime tourist destination in the 1950s. Over the years, the desert lake has become a post-apocalyptic scene marked by fish carcasses, abandoned structures, and mobile homes. Now, many scientists are claiming that it's an ecological time bomb. During the 1950s and '60s, the sea was crowded with boats, marathon races, and tourists. Celebrities and politicians made it a point to visit the Salton Sea as a weekend retreat. But the lake's popularity was short-lived after salinity and toxicity levels increased, causing thousands of fish to die, leaving an unpleasant smell and deserted beach town behind. In this segment of "SoCal Connected," reporter Derrick Shore visits the sea to talk to locals and experts about the sea, which is not only becoming an issue for locals, but could be a threat to the environment and the health of residents in larger U.S. Southwestern region and Mexico. Download the song on CD Baby: http://www.cdbaby.com/cd/michaelpicton2 My equipment: Canon 5DmkII 24mm lens & 100mm lens Steadicam Merlin Final Cut Studio & Color An awesome composer named Michael Picton, who would probably object to being listed as "equipment" but also will probably not read this. Also, to those considering a visit to the salton sea, be warned that it can get up to 110-120 degrees, you'll be far from a garage should you break down, and it can smell pretty awful. Late fall and early spring are much better times to go!

Chris had to leave early but we pushed on.. =) Hope you enjoy, there been a lot of videos posted lately on the Salton Sea. The largest lake in California doesn't have a single boat riding across. The town was developed in the 1960s and established in 1958 primarily by M. Penn Phillips and the Holly Corporation, the Texas-based oil refiner and land developer. It was intended to be a resort community on the Salton Sea, a saline, endorheic rift lake located directly on the San Andreas Fault, yet very little development was achieved due to its isolation and lack of local employment opportunities #LiLV - Living in Las Vegas youtube channel

There are a million videos and blogs about the weird and wild of the Salton Sea. I haven't covered them all ...however I hope I've given you some sense of the wonder that is here. In this video I go to Bombay Beach, the most visual collection of destruction that remains. Within the rumble on the beach, art installations mingle with trash...which sometimes became art. What surprised me most, however, were how many people still live here. How many people drive through and around this little town, and like me, stare from within their vehicle and take pictures. I was a little sheepish but wanted you to see both the weird and the wonderful. Next I go to Slab City. 4 miles from Niland, CA, Slab City is another tourist, gawking, opportunity. I was not brave enough to spend the night and because it had rained a lot the day before I also did not go to far in. Finally, I stopped at an abandoned building I had seen along the highway. The gate was usually locked. But on this day ..it was open. This is the first is a series of videos that will take you all around the lake...south, west, north and then east. Each has a different niche and demographics. There will also be one video on camping in and near the Salton Sea. Subscribe below to get updates. Thanks for watching. Hope you enjoy.

Each earthquake is a little change in stress' that threatens to trigger the big one, expert warns. Southern California is on a major earthquake alert in the wake of a swarm of tremors under the Salton Sea, a saline rift lake at the southern end of the San Andreas Fault. The warning, issued by the the Governor's Office of Emergency Services, remains in effect through Tuesday (4 October). The Salton Sea is about three hours east of the Pacific Ocean. The San Andreas fault is the state's fastest moving fault, and the one responsible for its most powerful quakes. There were 142 temblors in a 24-hour period along the fault beginning 26 September, and another 60 were recorded since then. It was the third swarm since earthquake sensors were installed in the area 1932, and this one had more earthquakes than the clusters of 2001 and 2009, reported the Los Angeles Times.

WATCH IN HIGH QUALITY. CLICK BY VIEW COUNT. In one of the lowest, driest places in North America sits the Salton Sea, which is really a man-made lake, in a desert basin. It is Californias largest body of water, approximately 35 miles north of the Mexican border and 130 miles east of San Diego, in what was once the northern extension of the Gulf of California (see diagram). The Salton Seas surface is approximately 227 feet below sea level. It covers 381 square miles and averages 31 feet deep (maximum depth is 51 feet). On three sides it is bordered by mountains. There is no outlet for its Water except for evaporation, which occurs at a high rate because of the hot and dry climate. Although freshwater feeds it, the sea is now 25 percent saltier than the ocean.

Salton City is a census-designated place (CDP) in Imperial County, California. The population was 3,763 at the 2010 census, up from 978 in 2000. It is the largest Imperial County development on the Salton coast. It is part of the El Centro, California Metropolitan Statistical Area. Although maps at first view show Salton City to be a sizable community, very few of the surveyed streets and roads were ever developed. The town was developed in the 1950s and established in 1958 primarily by M. Penn Phillips and the Holly Sugar Corporation as a resort community on the Salton Sea, a saline, endorheic rift lake located directly on the San Andreas Fault, yet very little development was achieved due to its isolation and lack of local employment opportunities. In the 1970s, most of the buildings constructed along the shoreline, including the city's marina were abandoned due to rising sea elevation. In the 1980s, the Imperial Irrigation District took proactive water conservation measures to reduce the flow of unused canal water into the Salton Sea. Throughout the 1980s and 1990s, as salinity and suspected pollution levels in the Salton Sea increased, the attraction of the Salton Sea as a recreational destination diminished. Most of the original tourist related structures fell during this time, including the Truckhaven Cafe, the Salton Bay Yacht Club hotel and restaurant, and the Holly House motel and restaurant (later renamed Desser House and then the Sundowner). In the 2000s, development in Salton City began to rise as a result of the escalating California housing market. Cheap land and housing costs, improvements to Highway 86, and a casino opened by Torres-Martinez Desert Cahuilla Indians attracted new residents

Visiting the Salton Sea on June 17, 2017

I took my second road trip out to the Salton Sea to revisit all the deserted buildings, dead fish, and hippies that made the place so fascinating the first time. I also wanted to try a new video style. I haven't really done a slower type of video like this. It's something I've been wanting to try for awhile. MY MAIN GEAR: Camera Body - http://amzn.to/2sNIhiE GoPro HERO 4 Black - http://amzn.to/2sNLw9R Rode Mic - http://amzn.to/2sNgQ8J Canon Lens- http://amzn.to/2sNPcIq Tokina Lens- http://amzn.to/2va7eWn GlideCam Stabilizer - http://amzn.to/2sNLwXj Camera Bag - http://amzn.to/2va3cgj The dying Salton Sea is a fascinating place. Abandoned homes, thousands of dead fish, the awful smell - it's all strangely appealing. Taking a road trip out there always makes for a fun adventure. There's not much to do in the Salton Sea, but enough to fill a day. I suggest checking out the water at Bombay beach. By visiting Bombay Beach, you also get to drive through a small town to get there. It's half abandoned, half not. There's even a small hotel and convenient store. I'd also suggest driving down to Slab City. Salvation Mountain and East Jesus are the main attractions. Salvation Mountain is a man-made art mountain with Bible verses and colors painted on it. East Jesus is considered a junk yard art exhibit. Some of the art is really impressive! The people living there live off the grid and will give you a tour of the whole place if you ask. The Salton Sea is located in Imperial County. Many documentaries and videos have been made about the area. If you're ever doing a california road trip, definitely consider putting it on your list. We drove out to the desert from Los Angeles. Looking at the map, I saw the Salton Sea and remembered what a natural wonder it was. So we decided to take a short detour and have a visit. It was as good as everything I had read about it. Here is everything you need to know about the Salton Sea. The only thing I could not capture were the smells. It's a must-see if you're ever in the neighbourhood. Enjoy! Peace out! And be sure to like, share, comment & subscribe!
