The Secret Service: Under fire

08:38
Created 150 years ago, the U.S. Secret Service was originally formed to combat counterfeiters. But after three presidents were assassinated, the agency was charged with protecting the commander-in-chief. Their proud legacy, however, has been tarnished by recent, unfortunate headlines. Lee Cowan talks with the new director of the Secret Service, Joseph Clancy, a 27-year veteran agent now tasked with turning the agency around; and with a former agent who once took a bullet for President Ronald Reagan.

USA: US SECRET SERVICE AGENTS CLAIM

02:39
English/Nat XFA African-American agents of the U-S Secret Service, which protects the President and Vice President, claim they're victims of racial harassment and retaliation. They're filing a class action lawsuit on Wednesday which active and retired agents say documents 25 years of job discrimination in the Secret Service. Lawyers are filing the suit on behalf of all the more than 200 African-American agents in the Secret Service, as well as former agents. Eight of those named in the lawsuit appeared with their lawyers at a news conference in Washington on Wednesday. They said they wanted to explain why they were ending years of silence on a difficult and painful issue. They include African-American men and women, both active and retired agents of the U-S Secret Service - the elite agency charged with protecting the President and Vice President, as well as other U-S and foreign officials. Among them is former agent, Cheryl Tyler. SOUNDBITE: (English) "The service meant a lot to me. It hurts me to stand here and to cry on national TV. It took me a lot to become what I became and what I am now." SUPER CAPTION: Cheryl Tyler, Former US Secret Service agent Tyler left the agency in 1999, frustrated by what she and other African-Americans say is a long-term pattern of discrimination, despite years of dedicated service. SOUNDBITE: (English) "I've taught people to become agents. To learn to take the bullet. To learn to stand and fight for your country. But I have to stand here to fight to be respected, and it hurts." SUPER CAPTION: Cheryl Tyler, Former US Secret Service agent Current female agents say little has changed for African-American women, who have been with the agency for more than 20 years. SOUNDBITE: (English) "Since 1974, when women were first brought into the agency, there has never been a black female manager in the Secret Service. That speaks volumes in that we're good enough to bring us in, we're good enough to protect the president, the vice president, the first lady and Chelsea Clinton, but we're not good enough to manage people. We're not good enough to give orders to people. That's a problem that I have." SUPER CAPTION: Yvette Summerour, US Secret Service agent But the suit also claims that the problem exists for African-American men in the agency. It says African-Americans face discrimination in hiring practices and promotion. SOUNDBITE: (English) "I've had 16 consecutive years in the Secret Service, with 16 consecutive years of outstanding evaluations, but I cannot get promoted. The glass ceiling is firmly intact, firmly in place, and they do not care to move it." SUPER CAPTION: Robert Moore, US Secret Service agent Current agents say they feel they must speak out, despite concerns that they might face retaliation on the job as a result of the lawsuit. SOUNDBITE: (English) "This is an extremely honourable organisation. It's an excellent organisation. I left the Marine Corps to join this organisation so I figured I was going from one high class organisation to another. I'm proud to be a Secret Service agent. Unfortunately the Secret Service is not maintaining its highest ideals and standards." SUPER CAPTION: Luther Ivery, US Secret Service agent A spokesman for the Secret Service defended the agency, citing African American agents who serve as assistant directors and heads of some agency field offices. But lawyers for the group say they're demanding action by the U-S government to push for reforms in the Secret Service. USA: CLINTON/LEWINSKY CASE: SECRET SERVICE AGENTS GIVES EVIDENCE (2)

03:12
English/Nat The battle over some Secret Service agents giving testimony is over and the Clinton administration has lost. The agent who headed President Clinton's security team, and several of his colleagues, spent the afternoon before Ken Starr's grand jury investigating into the Monica Lewinsky case. An appeals court that ordered the agents to testify gave the administration until midday on Friday to get the Supreme Court to block that testimony. But Chief Justice William Rehnquist refused to step in. President Clinton had to travel back home to Arkansas without his normal security team on Friday. Seven secret service agents - including the head of the team - spent the afternoon at the Federal Courthouse. They were called to testify before the grand jury investigating the Monica Lewinsky case. The testimony comes after the Clinton administration's last hope - the Supreme Court - refused to grant the administration's request that he block the agents from being questioned. After losing three lower court battles to block Secret Service testimony, Clinton's administration made a last ditch plea to Supreme Court Chief Justice William Rehnquist. But Rehnquist refused to step in, saying the administration had not shown there would be "irreparable harm" from that testimony. Earlier in the day, President Clinton told reporters the case involves the Secret Service, and that neither he nor the White House is involved in the issue. But at the same time, he made his feelings on the issue very clear. SOUNDBITE: (English) "I do have an opinion. I have an opinion, I have a legal opinion and I have a personal opinion. But I think that it's not -- I think it's important, and I think it would be completely inappropriate for me to be involved in this. I want the American people to understand that notwithstanding what some have said, and others have implied, this was a decision that came out of the Secret Service, about which they feel very strongly. And these people risk their lives to protect me and other presidents in a professional way, not a political way." SUPER CAPTION: President Bill Clinton The Justice Department has argued that forcing Secret Service agents to testify would threaten the relationship between a president and his bodyguards. The Supreme Court could still decide to hear the case, when the full court comes back this fall. Until then, Ken Starr has promised he will limit the scope of his questioning, and not ask about detailed issues, such as conversations - that would hinder the agents' relationship with the President. SOUNDBITE: (English) "What Judge Starr said is that, until the Supreme Court in total decides whether it will hear this case, he's going to very narrowly focus his questioning to who, what, when, where and why type questions. If the Supreme Court however, decides to allow this case to proceed, that is that they deny the request, then the scope of his questioning can be as broad as his imagination allows him to be." SUPER CAPTION: Mike Zeldin/Former Prosecutor Meanwhile, on Capitol Hill, a harsh response from the Chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee. SOUNDBITE: (English) I think it's time for them to wake up and realise that they don't, that they represent all of the tax payers in this country, that they have an obligation to live within the law themselves and to not take any further frivolous appeals of this matter. SUPERCAPTION: Senator Orrin Hatch, Republican, Utah The Secret Service officers left the courthouse on Friday evening without testifying before the grand jury. Starr's team promises they will be back --now it is only a matter of time. Several Chilean and American agents got into a pushing and shoving match outside the cultural centre in Santiago where the dinner was held. The incident happened after Bush and his wife, Laura, had just posed for pictures on a red carpet with the host of the summit, Chilean President Ricardo Lagos and his wife, Luisa Duran. As Bush stepped inside, Chilean agents closed ranks at the door, blocking the president's agents from following. Bush noticed the scuffles, turned back, reached through the dispute and pulled his agent from the scrum and into the building. Secret Service in Action: Behind the Scenes (Waiting for President Obama)

05:07
President Obama has just arrived at the Globe Theatre in London and the United States Secret Service are busy turning the vehicles around since they drove down a dead-end street. The first vehicle seen here is a black Chevrolet Suburban which is the White House Communications Agency (WHCA) vehicle which ensures secure communications with the White House for command continuity. Notice that when the Secret Service Agent gets out of the back door of the Suburban, the window is completely covered over with some sort of non-transparent material. It could be metal. It's also clear that the vehicle has minimal if any armor unlike the other Suburbans in the "secure package" closer to the president. Also note that it's clear that the rear seat of the Suburban has been removed just from the way the USSS Agent climbs out of the back door. As The Beast is being turned around, one of the USSS agents asks the London Met Counter Assault Team to move the Land Rover which can been seen pulling out. You can also see a London Metropolitan counter Assault Team in an unmarked black BMW X5 at 01:06. At 02:27 we clearly see the Ford F-550 hazardous materials support vehicle pulling out and getting into position. This vehicle has a gurney in the back for transporting the injured protectee. At 01:02 : "I guess he's got to fill Air Force One with something." :) This is the Secret Service in Action. 10 Hidden Details The Secret Service Doesn't Want You To Know

13:07
Subscribe to our channel: http://goo.gl/9CwQhg Try out ThePremium Network for free https://goo.gl/7Ueuwz For copyright matters please contact us at: [email protected] You’ve seen them running alongside the presidential limousine, scanning large crowds like hawks and walking around the grounds of the White House. Of course, we’re talking about the US Secret Service. These men and women have a serious job and they definitely look the part. Dressed in their black suits, their best-known job is to protect the POTUS. But there’s more to it than that. As you’ll see with these following 10 secrets, the Secret Service is about more than looking intimidating while wearing sunglasses. Ahead we’ll start you off by explaining the original purpose of the Secret Service. Spoiler alert – it didn’t actually involve protecting the President. From investigations to interrogations, we’ll take a look at some of the other jobs the Secret Service performs today. Ever wonder what would happen if most of the US government was wiped out? Well, the Secret Service plays a role in ensuring the continuity of the government and it involves the secret location of Mount Weather. Of course, all those men and women in suits need a place to hang out and we’ve found it on H Street in Washington D.C. We’ll also show you that the Secret Service isn’t all about taking a bullet either. No, they are prepared to perform all sorts of life-saving procedures on the President to ensure their chances of staying alive between the time of an incident and arrival at the nearest hospital. There’s also the fact that not all agents are human. That’s right, dogs do their part in the secret service and their training is just as rigorous as it is for their two-legged masters. Then there’s the proximity of the Secret Service to the President. As you’ll see, they are always nearby and sometimes it can be a little too close for comfort. Even in the safe confines of the White House, agents are on guard and that includes those stationed in the kitchen. They’re not just there to keep the chefs safe. We’ll show you how agents are forensic experts who can track down a threatening letter just by the type of ink it was written with. Finally, there’s the weaponry and equipment. We all know the Secret Service packs some firepower. However, the types of devices and weapons can be truly mind-boggling as it demonstrates they are ready for nearly any scenario. U.S Secret Service • "Protect the President of U.S" • 2018

02:16
The United States Secret Service ("USSS" or "Secret Service") is a federal law enforcement agency under the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.Until 2003, the Service was part of the U.S. Department of the Treasury, as the agency was originally founded to combat the then-widespread counterfeiting of U.S. currency. The U.S. Secret Service has two distinct areas of responsibility: Investigations – Safeguarding the payment and financial systems of the United States from a wide range of financial and computer-based crimes, including but not limited to counterfeit U.S. currency, identity theft, access device fraud, cyber crimes, network intrusions, ransomware, business email compromise, bank fraud, and illicit financing operations. The Secret Service is a key member of the FBI's Joint Terrorism Task Force (JTTF) which investigates and combats terrorism on a national and international scale. The Service is also authorized to assist in investigating missing and exploited children. Protection – Ensuring the safety of the President of the United States, the Vice President of the United States, the President’s and Vice President’s immediate families, former presidents, their spouses and their minor children under the age of 16, foreign heads of state, major presidential and vice presidential candidates and their spouses, and events designated as National Special Security Events. As part of the Secret Service’s mission of preventing an incident before it occurs, the agency relies on meticulous advance work and threat assessments developed by its Intelligence Division to identify potential risks to protectees. The Secret Service's initial responsibility was to investigate the counterfeiting of U.S. currency, which was rampant following the U.S. Civil War. The agency then evolved into the United States' first domestic intelligence and counterintelligence agency. Many of the agency's missions were later taken over by subsequent agencies such as the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), and IRS Criminal Investigation Division (IRS). #USA #SecretService #SpecialForces #Motivation

The president, protected by the United States Secret Service as well as the London Metropolitan Police Force, is led by the Special Escort Group (SEG) with their distinctive Honda VFR1200F motorcycles which clear traffic while a lead rider positioned directly in front of a SEG BMW 7-series (heavily armored) leads the spare (decoy) limousine and the primary limo (codename "Stagecoach"). The two dark blue Land Rovers following the Secret Service Suburbans contain London Metropolitan Police Anti-Terrorist Counter Assault Teams. The various buses in the president's motorcade contain mostly White House press. This is the US Secret Service in Action! USA: Earnest confirms resignation of Secret Service head Julia Pierson

01:01
Video ID: 20141002-005 SOT, United States Press Secretary, Josh Earnest (in English): "I suspect that many of you have seen the statement from the Secretary of Homeland Security Jeh Johnson, in that statement he noted that he had accepted this afternoon the resignation of Julia Pierson, the Director of the United States Secret Service. Before I get to your questions let me just tell you that this afternoon the president had the opportunity to telephone Director Pierson, to express his appreciation for her service to the agency and to the country. She dedicated more than 30 years of her life to the United States Secret Service and to the important work that they do over there. As I mentioned yesterday, she spent several hours in front of the cameras yesterday answering difficult questions from members of Congress and in the context of that interaction she took responsibility for the shortcomings of the agency that she led, and she took responsibility for fixing them. And that, quite simply I think, is a testament to her professionalism and her character. " SCRIPT United States Press Secretary, Josh Earnest, confirmed that President Barack Obama has accepted the resignation of Julia Pierson, the Director of the United States Secret Service, on Wednesday. During the White House Press Briefing, Earnest said that the Obama spoke with Pierson over the phone during the afternoon of October 1, and during the call he expressed "his appreciation for her service to the agency and to the country." According to Earnest, Pierson dedicated more than 30 years of her life to the United States Secret Service and "took responsibility for the shortcomings of the agency that she led" when being questioned by Congress Tuesday about the September 19 incident which allegedly saw a knife-wielding intruder, Omar Gonzalez, enter the White House and reach the East Room after evading a guard. 55-year-old Pierson was head of the service for around 18 months. Her appointment by President Obama in 2013 made her the first woman in history to head the U.S. Secret Service. Whether they accept that protection or not, once elected until the day they die (unless they opt out after leaving office), they will be shadowed by an elite team of Secret Service agents. These individuals, while not actually sworn to do so (contrary to popular belief), are generally expected to, if necessary, give their lives to keep the president safe. While in office, this protection extends to a president’s immediate family. But does this ever include their family pet? Technically no. Secret Service in Action! President Donald Trump arrived in New York City on the evening of 14 August 2017 and was escorted in The Beast by the United States Secret Service and the New York Police Department to Trump Tower. This is one of the largest motorcades I've ever seen. A couple White House staff vans but no press buses. Just United States Secret Service and NYPD vehicles. Brought to you in Cinema 4K. Notice the side door is open on FDNY Ambulance 001. Thank you to the NYPD police officers working the southwest corner of 56th Street and 3rd Avenue for granting me access to film. USA: CLINTON/LEWINSKY CASE: SECRET SERVICE AGENTS GIVES EVIDENCE

02:56
English/Nat Secret Service Agents protecting President Clinton have gone to a Federal Court in Washington, where they are to give testimony about the sex scandal surrounding President Clinton. It follows a last minute decision by Supreme Court Chief Justice William Rehnquist that they must give evidence and do not have immunity. They face questioning about whether they saw any meetings between the President and former White House trainee Monica Lewinsky. Clinton refused to say anything that it would be inappropriate to comment on the latest development. The deadline was set and the White House had to meet it. In Washington on Friday President Clinton's Secret Service agents arrived at the Federal Courthouse despite efforts to claim immunity rather than testify in the Monica Lewinsky scandal. The Secret Service says that forcing their presidential bodyguards to testify in court would jeopardise their duties. They ended up losing the latest battle with independent counsel Ken Starr and are now obliged to testify. Earlier in the day before the decision, President Clinton took questions after a speech to the Girls Nation at the White House. He launched a vigorous defence of the Secret Service and praised what he called their professional judgement. Clinton said while he does have an opinion on the matter, it would be inappropriate for him to discuss it and insists on keeping mum. And these people risk their lives to protect me and other presidents in a professional way, not a political way." SUPER CAPTION: Bill Clinton, U-S President The president was also asked about the comments of one appeals court judge, who said the White House had effectively declared war on the independent counsel. Clinton reiterated that the White House has taken no position on the case. SOUNDBITE: (English) "This case is about their professional judgement about what's necessary to do their job. And I have not -- neither I nor the White House have been involved in it in any way, shape or form, nor will we. Nor will I complicate it by commenting further on what he said." SUPER CAPTION: Bill Clinton, U-S President Clinton went on to answer questions about America's trade deficit, which soared in May to a record 15-point-75 (b) billion U-S dollars. He said much of the trade deficit stems from the Asian financial crisis, which helped push U-S exports down to their lowest level in 15 months. Clinton also used the opportunity to press Congress once again to support additional funding for the International Monetary Fund. SOUNDBITE: (English) "Almost the entire increase in the trade deficit is due to the Asian economic trouble, which is why, since January, I have been saying we should make our proper contribution to the International Monetary Fund to promote economic reform and economic recovery in Asia. And the fact that we have not done so is endangering the livelihood of American farmers and American factory workers, because we are not making the exports, especially to Asia, that we otherwise could be making if those economies were coming back. And a critical part of that is our contribution to the International Monetary Fund." Motorcade of President Obama: Secret Service in Action with Suburbans in New York

01:53
The presidential motorcade of President Obama in May 2011. There are some nice Dodge Chargers of the New York Police Department (NYPD) Highway Patrol in this motorcade, along with four identical unmarked Ford Crown Victoria police interceptors of the NYPD. Notice that there are two of them placed directly in front of the two presidential limousines, just behind the NYPD Charger. The other two are at the end of the motorcade. This is the United States Secret Service in action! These are the same cars that President Donald Trump uses in the Secret Service motorcades today. Manhattan, New York, New York, USA. 05.2011

However, some federal law enforcement vehicles in NYC, including USSS vehicles, run with forward-facing red lights only. These unmarked police cars are responding with lights and sirens.
