Narrative Poetry | Definition and Examples of Narrative Poetry : NARRATIVE POETRY is a form of poetry that tells a story, often making use of the voices of a narrator and characters as well; the entire story is usually written in metered verse. Narrative poems do not have to follow RHYTHMIC PATTERNS. The poems that make up this genre may be short or long, and the story it relates to may be COMPLEX. It is normally DRAMATIC, with objectives, diverse characters, and meter. Narrative poems include epics, ballads, idylls, and lays. Some narrative poetry takes the form of a NOVEL IN VERSE. An example of this is The Ring and the Book by Robert Browning. In terms of narrative poetry, a ROMANCE is a narrative poem that tells a story of CHIVALRY. Examples include the Romance of the Rose or Tennyson's Idylls of the King. Although these examples use MEDIEVAL AND ARTHURIAN materials, romances may also tell stories from CLASSICAL MYTHOLOGY. Shorter narrative poems are often SIMILAR IN STYLE to the short story. Sometimes these short narratives are collected into INTERRELATED GROUPS, as with Chaucer's The Canterbury Tales. Some literatures contain PROSE NARRATIVES, and the Old Norse Sagas include both incidental poetry and the biographies of poets. An example is "The Cremation of Sam McGee" by Robert Service. The Book of the Duchess by Geoffrey Chaucer, The Charge of the Light Brigade by Tennyson, Crank by Ellen Hopkins, The Divine Comedy by Dante, Don Juan by Lord Byron, The Eve of St. Agnes by John Keats, The Hunting of the Snark by Lewis Carroll, Lamia by John Keats and The Faerie Queene by Edmund Spenser are all examples of narrative poetry. .............................................................................. Burlesque is a literary, dramatic or musical work intended to cause laughter by caricaturing the manner or spirit of serious works, or by ludicrous treatment of their subjects. The word derives from the Italian burlesco, which, in turn, is derived from the Italian burla, which means a joke, ridicule or mockery. Examples of literary burlesque are Alexander Pope's The Rape of the Lock, Samuel Butler's Hudibras and John Gay’s The Beggar’s Opera. An example of musical burlesque is Richard Strauss's 1890 Burleske for Piano and Orchestra. Examples of theatrical burlesques include W. S. Gilbert's Robert the Devil and Leopold Mozart‘s Sinfonia Burlesca . A high burlesque refers to a burlesque imitation where a literary, elevated manner is applied to a commonplace or comically inappropriate subject matter. One of the most commonly cited examples of high burlesque is Alexander Pope's The Rape of the Lock. On the other hand, a low burlesque applies an irreverent, mocking style to a serious subject. For more info on the supported curriculum visit: http://classicalacademicpress.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=23&products_id=66 The Art of Poetry is an excellent middle school or high school curriculum; it will teach the practice of reading a poem slowly and carefully, introduce students to the elements of poetry (such as imagery and metaphor) and the many forms that can make a poem, from sonnet to open verse. "In her clear-eyed, passionate, and accessible account of the power poetry plays in our lives and in her careful and exact explanation of its craft, Christine Perrin provides an inspiring, accessible, and comprehensive introduction to the reading and writing of poetry. What I admire most about The Art of Poetry is how it proceeds from Perrin's deeply lived and felt convictions about the necessity of poetry and from her experience as a gifted poet." —Michael Collier, Former Poet Laureate of Maryland; Professor of Creative Writing, University of Maryland; Director of the Bread Loaf Writer's Conference It is rare for one person to embrace both the structure and the impact of poetry. Consequently, most instruction in poetry is dominated either by the mechanics or by the emotional content, either of which sells short the richest method of human communication. Christine Perrin relishes all aspects and all types of poetry. She has managed to write a book that will enable teachers to teach students to understand its richness. Every teacher that has avoided poetry as difficult or intimidating to teach can now teach it with confidence and enjoy it as well. —Leslie Y. Next, read it slowly, paying attention to individual lines or groups of words. Finally, read it aloud, focusing on the sound of the poem. Tip Don’t look too hard for meaning and symbols. It's important not to "overwork" a poem. Step 2: Think about structure Think about the structure of the poem. Does it have a rhyme scheme? Is there a pattern, or is it free verse? Is there repetition? Consult a literary dictionary to learn about specific forms, such as the sonnet, villanelle, and sestina. Step 3: Contemplate the content Contemplate the content of the poem. What happens in the poem? What is the mood? Is there a conflict? What seems to be the theme? Tip The author of the poem may also be the narrator, but often the narrator is a character the author invents. Step 4: Focus on sounds Focus on the way the poem sounds. Repetition of initial consonant sounds is called alliteration. Repetition of vowel sounds is called assonance. Look for a pattern of accented and unaccented syllables to find a poem's rhythm. Step 5: Look for figurative language Look for figurative language. Poems often use simile and metaphor to compare feelings and things. Personification occurs when human qualities are attributed to non-human things, and synecdoche substitutes a part for the whole. Tip A literary dictionary or handbook is a handy resource for defining different types of figurative language. Step 6: Think about voice Think about the voice of the poem. What is the point of view of the narrator? Is the tone intimate or distant? Is the language formal or informal?
