Night of the Northern Lights
If you wish to master aurora photography and learn from award winning photographers then check offer by Iceland Photo Tours at https://iceland-photo-tours.com/ On 25th February 2014 Sun produced X4.9 flare which on 27th February caused G2 (KP 6) geomagnetic storm on Earth. It was the brightest aurora display so far during this solar maximum which I could witness with auroral displays overhead in the far north of Scotland. This short movie illustrates what has been seen from latitude 58.3 degrees north. What Causes The Northern Lights?
There are many misconceptions about what causes the Aurora Borealis when it really requires solar winds, magnetic fields and excited atmospheric gases. Learn more at HowStuffWorks.com: http://science.howstuffworks.com/nature/climate-weather/atmospheric/question471.htm Share on Facebook: http://goo.gl/FMuiBa Share on Twitter: http://goo.gl/TR4YyU Subscribe: http://goo.gl/ZYI7Gt Visit our site: http://www.brainstuffshow.com The Northern Lights are beautiful and odd and have understandably inspired many myths. The Vikings thought they were a bridge between our world and Asgard where Thor and the other gods live. In another Norse myth, they are the light reflected of the armor of the Valkyries. And people in Finland thought it was the archangel Michael (John Travolta) battling Beelzebub (the devil). Wrong. Wrong. Wrong. All wrong. It was the famous early astronomer and recanter of science, Galileo Galilei, who gave the Northern lights the name Aurora Borealis, which means “dawn of the North” in Latin. But it wasn’t until Norwegian scientist Christian Birkeland figured it out in 1896 that the true origin of the auroras was understood. In the center of the Earth, the molten iron core generates magnetic fields that extend through the crust and into space around the planet, creating what’s called Earth’s magnetosphere. It’s a pretty great thing that Earth has it, because the magnetosphere protects us from all manner of charged particles spit out from the Sun. The Sun is so hot that it produces plasma (a fourth state of matter) where positively charged atoms (ions) and negatively charge electrons flow freely around one another. These highly charged particles have enough energy to escape the Sun’s gravity and fly out into space, barreling toward Earth at 1 million miles per hour like a shotgun blast of solar hate. This is called solar wind. When they encounter our magnetosphere, most of these ions and electrons bounce harmlessly off and Earth is saved. But some of these particles make it through the magnetosphere where it’s weakest (at the north and south poles), and when they do the light show begins. The electrons that make it into our atmosphere interact with some of the elements there, particularly oxygen and nitrogen. The electrons transfer energy to them, exciting them in the process. To calm down, the excited atoms must release some energy, which they do as tiny packets of light called photons -- beautiful, beautiful photons. Depending on where in the atmosphere the electrons interact with these other atoms, different colors are produced. Oxygen emits a yellow-green color up to about 150 miles in the atmosphere. After that, it turns red. Nitrogen emits a nice blue color about 60 miles up. And don’t forget these colors can blend, which can create glowing pinks, purples and whites. It’s like Miami Beach up there. This interplay is most vibrant during solar storms, which depend somewhat on the Sun’s solar cycle. And, although these lights can be produced at all hours, they aren’t visible during the day, since the sunlight outshines them. 25 Interesting Facts About Northern Lights You Should Know Before You See Them
Officially known as Aurora Borealis, the Northern Lights are one of nature's most spectacular visual phenomena. Appearing in many forms from patches or scattered clouds of light to streamers, arcs, curtains or shooting rays, the northern lights' amazing light display can be observed in the sky of high latitude regions such as Norway or Canada. You might know the cause of this natural phenomenon (collision of solar wind and magnetospheric charged particles) but there are many more interesting facts about this unreal spectacle that are worth learning. Here are 25 of them, illustrated with some of the most amazing Northern Lights pictures you have ever seen. https://twitter.com/list25 https://www.facebook.com/list25 http://list25.com Check out the physical list here for some extra info and explanations - http://list25.com/25-interesting-facts-about-northern-lights-you-should-know-before-you-see-them/ And now for a quick preview: The most spectacular Northern Lights in recent recorded history are considered those from the "Great geomagnetic storm" on 28 August and 2 September 1859. Studies have shown that a solar storm of this magnitude occurring today would likely cause widespread problems for modern civilization. Astronauts on board the International Space Station are at the same altitude as the Northern Lights and see them from the side. The Southern Lights offer the same visual display as the Northern Lights but since the South Pole is even more inhospitable and inaccessible than the North Pole, it is more difficult to view the Southern Aurora. Therefore, the Northern Lights are more popular and get almost all the attention. There are several towns famous for their great conditions for watching the Northern Lights. In North America, the aurora tourism capital is Yellowknife (Northwest Territories, Canada), while Tromso (Northern Norway) is the same for Europe. There have been many legends about the Northern Lights. Some North American Inuit tribes call the aurora „aqsarniit“ (meaning “football players”) thinking it is the spirits of the dead playing football with a head of a walrus. The colors of the Northern Lights depend on what gas is involved and how high in the ionosphere the reaction takes place. Blue and green lights form at lower altitudes while red color comes from the highest altitudes. Auroras tend to be more frequent and spectacular during high solar sunspot activity, which cycles over approximately eleven years. The last climax was in 2013. [...]

The Northern Lights Explained | VISIT NORWAY
To experience the unbelievable colours that moves across the Arctic sky is on many bucket lists, and few places offer more ways to witness the aurora borealis than Norway. But what's the story behind the Northern Lights? During large solar explosions and flares, huge quantities of particles are thrown out of the sun and into deep space. When the particles meet the Earth’s magnetic shield, they are led towards a circle around the magnetic North Pole, where they interact with the upper layers of the atmosphere. The energy which is then released is the northern lights. All this happens approximately 100 kilometres above our heads. AHHH!! We saw the Northern Lights on our FIRST NIGHT!! Finland Travel Vlog 2
After arriving on a super clear night in Lapland, way up in the arctic circle, we took a chance and went for a walk. And on my second attempt to see the Aurora, it happened! I apologise for the terrible quality footage but I got so excited and my fingers were freezing. But there's a glimpse into seeing what we saw. The Thumbail/end card image is mine taken that first night (turned out much better than the video :) ) This was our second & third day in Finland and the third stop of our big winter wonderland Europe travel vlog series. We are trying to do this on a budget, so besides the northern lights we discovered pasta in a bag!

This is episode two! ------ Go subscribe to Steve's awesome travel channel: https://www.youtube.com/BackPackerOrg ------ ☆ MORE INFO FROM THIS ICELAND TRAVEL VIDEO ☆ Iceland Travel Partners: - Iceland Car Rental - https://sadcars.com/ - Where to stay in Iceland - homeaway.com (see below) THINGS TO DO in Iceland (in this episode): ► Eyjafjörður Fjord - One of the best places in Iceland to see the Northern Lights. Northern Iceland has very little light pollution, so tracking the Northern Lights over the Fjords is a great idea. ► Ásbyrgi Canyon - This massive canyon was formed way back after the ice age as melting glacier floods ripped giant divots into the earth and left this beautiful valley and rock walls in its path. ► Northern Lights - In order to have the best chance of seeing the Northern Lights in Iceland, check out this website we used to track the cloud coverage and aurora activity. http://en.vedur.is/weather/forecasts/aurora/ ► Godafoss Waterfall - An expansive horseshoe-shaped cascade that’s probably my favorite waterfall of the entire trip. ► Hverir or Namafjall geothermal field - Located in northeastern Iceland around the geothermal region of Lake Mývatn - a vast area of hot springs, sulfur crystals, and boiling mud pots. ► Dettifoss Waterfall - Said to be Europe’s most powerful waterfall, and we’re getting a unique perspective - by moonlight. ------ WHERE WE STAYED in Iceland (with HomeAway): 1. What Causes The Northern Lights?
Have you ever seen the beautiful auroral displays in the high latitudes? These are the Northern and Southern Lights. But what dark physics wizardry is going on to make this happen? Support us at: http://www.patreon.com/universetoday More stories at: http://www.universetoday.com/ Follow us on Twitter: @universetoday Follow us on Tumblr: http://universetoday.tumblr.com/ Like us on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/universetoday Google+ - https://plus.google.com/+universetoday/ Instagram - http://instagram.com/universetoday Team: Fraser Cain - @fcain Jason Harmer - @jasoncharmer Susie Murph - @susiemmurph Brian Koberlein - @briankoberlein Chad Weber - [email protected] Kevin Gill - @kevinmgill Created by: Fraser Cain and Jason Harmer Edited by: Chad Weber Music: Left Spine Down - “X-Ray” https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4tcoZNrSveE&feature=youtu.be If you live in the high latitudes, like Alaska, or New Zealand, you've probably had a chance to see an aurora. Here in Canada, we call them the Northern Lights or the Aurora Borealis, but the lucky folks in the far southern latitudes see them too. On a good night, you can see flickering sheets of light that dance across the night sky, producing an amazing display of colors. You can see green, red and even yellow and purple ghostly displays. So what causes the Northern Lights? They’re produced as our planet moves through the chemtrails emanating from the womp-rat sized exhaust ports of Planet X. Originating in the Bush-Cheney administration during a failed co-invasion attempt of the lizard people from the hollow part of the flat earth and aliens from John Carpenter’s THE THING. They cause diabetes, gluten sensitivity, itchy bun noodles and homeopathy and herald the coming of the Grand Nagus of MMA-UFC-ENTJ-LOL-WTF-BBQ. That is, if you believe everything you read on the internet. Auroras are in fact caused by interactions between energetic particles from the Sun and the Earth’s magnetic field. The Earth is filled with liquid metal, and it rotates inside turning our planet into a giant magnet. Invisible magnetic field lines travel from the Earth’s northern magnetic pole to its southern magnetic pole. This is why compasses point north, they’re following the field lines produced by this giant metallic spinning goo core. Or as I like to call it “The Planetary Shield Generator”, which should not be confused with the giant whirling metallic debris field orbiting the Earth which is our “Alien Invasion Shield”. Which you can learn about in another episode. So why would we need a Planetary Shield, you might ask? It is because we are perpetually under assault by our great enemy, the Sun. Our Sun is constantly releasing a flurry of energetic particles right at us. These particles are electrically charged and driven to Earth by the Solar Wind. When they encounter the Earth’s magnetic field, they’re forced into a spiral along the magnetic field lines. Eventually they collide with an oxygen or nitrogen atom in the Earth’s atmosphere and release photons of light. So, thanks to the spinning magnet goo core, our planetary shield converts these particles into beautiful night time displays. Although there can be auroras almost any night in the highest latitudes, we see the most brilliant auroral displays after large flares on the Sun. The most powerful flares blast a hail of particles that’s so intense, auroral displays can be seen at mid and even low-latitudes. It sounds dangerous, but we’re perfectly safe here, beneath our protective atmosphere and magnetic field. You might be amazed to know that auroral displays can even make sounds. People have reported crackling noises coming from the sky during an aurora. Even though the auroras themselves are at very high altitudes, the particle interactions can happen just a few hundred meters above the ground. People have reported hearing claps and crackles during an aurora, and this has been verified by microphones placed by scientists. If you could get high up into the atmosphere, I’m sure the sounds would be amazing. The interactions between the Sun and our planet are just another gift we get from the night sky. If you've never seen an aurora with your own eyes, you really need to add them to your bucket list. Organize a trip to northern Europe or Alaska and get a chance to see this amazing display of nature. Have you ever been lucky enough to see the Northern Lights? Tell us a story in the comments below. Northern Lights in Iceland
Iceland has been on our bucket list for almost a decade now, and when we were invited to speak at a travel conference in Reykjavik and spend 7 days exploring the country, we couldn't have been happier. Our adventure begins with with a red eye flight landing at 7am only to embark on a 12 hour journey exploring some of Icelands epic glaciers, waterfalls, and fishing it off with a wicked snowmobile ride into the sunset! ...and this was only day 1! Sweden Lapland Tree Hotel - Northern Lights & Dogsledding
😘 P L E A S E • S U B S C R I B E - 💃 🕺 http://bit.ly/2B0UXdt If you're interested in seeing the northern lights, visiting beautiful Lapland, or dog sledding in Sweden, then this is your guide to a trip of a lifetime. This is your complete guide to the Arctic adventures in Swedish Lapland complete with dog sledding, Northern Lights (Aurora Borealis), snowmobiling, & a trip to the iconic Tree Hotel (aka the treehouse hotel). Our adventure began as we flew through the main Swedish hub of Stockholm and up to Luleå, a city with a population of 80,000 that borders the Arctic Circle. As we stepped outside of Luleå airport, the crisp sub-zero temperatures made us gasp for air. Little did we know that the Arctic adventures ahead of us would be the thing that would truly take our breath away. We arrived at the Treehotel - which is very close to the Ice Hotel and just south of Abisko , a destination in itself, about an 80-minute drive from Luleå in the snow. After a gourmet dinner of arctic char and fresh blueberry dessert, it was time to check into our tree house. We hiked 800 meters up the wintery white path, following the little lanterns that illuminated the snowy hillside. We passed various tree houses of varying shapes and sizes until we arrived at our unique tree house, the UFO. The flying saucer nestled itself in the trees, 20 feet up above ground. Just as though we were in a Star Trek flick, the bottom of the UFO opened up and a staircase dropped down to the ground as if to say, “beam me up, Scotty.” We climbed the staircase and opened the doors to our flying Swedish saucer. From the moment we touched down in Swedish Lapland to our very last day, it snowed. While this may have been beautiful for photos, it’s horrible for viewing the Northern Lights. On our last day, there were rumors that we may get to see the dancing green fairy in the skies. We checked our Aurora app religiously and found out that we may be able to see the Northern Lights between the hours of 9 pm and 11 pm. As we waited for the Aurora Borealis to flare, we stayed warm by doing push-ups and air squats, forcing our heart rates to soar. All of a sudden, Mother Nature opened her green eyes and pirouetted through the Arctic sky and our hearts seemed to stop. There they were – the Northern Lights – right before our very eyes. The world suddenly seemed to stop rotating, time seemed to slow, and we were there – present with our surroundings and connected to the universe. Scott and I immediately embraced, cognizant of the rarity of the moment and grateful for the opportunity to witness Mother Nature at her finest. Thanks for watching! ICELAND ROAD TRIP with Northern Lights!
A one week (7 days) roadtrip around Iceland on the ringroad with a Camper Van is an Adventure of a lifetime! There are many attractions to see along the road and this is a recap of the things we have seen and done. We also explored famous places like Reykjavik, Akureyri, Godafoss, Myvatn, Jokulsarlon (glacier lagoon), Skogafoss and Seljalandsfoss. If you would like to know where a specific place is from the video, let me know the timing at which you see it in the video and I'll answer with the place.
