What is STREET DANCE? What does STREET DANCE mean? STREET DANCE meaning - STREET DANCE definition - STREET DANCE explanation. A street dance is a dance style—regardless of country of origin—that evolved outside dance studios in any available open space such as streets, dance parties, block parties, parks, school yards, raves, and nightclubs. The term is used to describe vernacular dances in urban context. Vernacular dances are often improvisational and social in nature, encouraging interaction and contact with spectators and other dancers. These dances are a part of the vernacular culture of the geographical area that they come from. Examples of street dance include b-boying (or breakdancing), which originated in New York City, and Melbourne Shuffle which originated in Melbourne, Australia. Traditional jazz dance, having existed since the late nineteenth century, is perhaps one of the oldest street dances of urban America. Street dance is often considered urban folk dance. Since many concepts of urbanization have existed for a long time back in history, the point of which folk dance is to be considered a more historical street dance is often broad and unknown. Street dance and folk dance are distinguished by when the terms were introduced for, the term 'street dance' as a compound noun has been believed to have existed since the beginning of the early 20th century, whereby Afro-American vernacular dance was becoming the most popular in the western world. Clogging is thought to be considered a very early form of street dance, since it evolved in the streets, factories and dance parties during the 18th century (or before) amongst dancers that were considered a part of the UK, Western Europe and Appalachian urban countercultures at the time. The hip-hop dance style b-boying and the funk-styles popping and locking are some of the most popular street dance styles in African-American culture. Those forms of hip-hop dance are the most prominently practiced street dances. These street dance styles are so common that commercialized versions have been professionally developed and choreographed for dance routines in pop, hip-hop, electronic, and R&B music videos. B-boying helped bring about street dance crew culture, whereby the dance crews would learn various street dance styles for impression and competition. These street crews usually perform in outdoor jams, leading to further styles of hip-hop dance. New Jack Swing (a.k.a. Swingbeat) was created in the 90's dance scene, which is also a respected style of streetdance. New Jack Swing is also a music genre, co-created by pioneers such as Teddy Riley. Another example of a street dance is house dance, which is prominently danced to house music. House dance evolved out of Chicago clubs but grew and developed in the clubs of New York. Due to the modern mainstream popularity of clubs, street and fad dances tend to evolve more often in nightclubs rather than outdoor spaces. However, they may be practiced in outdoor spaces. Many rave dances are also street dances. The majority of rave dances are street dance styles since rave culture is prominently an underground movement. Rave culture, like hip-hop culture, is vastly diverse and there are many different music genres each of which have individually prominent vernacular dance styles. Amongst the electronic dance community, street dances in the form of rave dances are mainly revolved around a consistent rhythm and flow. Street dance styles like popping, tutting, and roboting, due to their futuristic-psychedelic theme and/or movements, have been widely adopted amongst the electronic dance community and influenced dances such as Liquiding. From out of the electronic dance community, street dances like Electro Dancing and Jumpstyle (an example of a rave dance) have emerged. Unlike many hip-hop dances, house and rave dances are usually heralded more 'fun' than 'competitive', although most street dances start like so before being adopted for competition or any other purpose since nobody legally owns them. Generally dances like the Melbourne Shuffle are not applied as a dance for battling, rather for dancing in the crowd at a rave party. This distinguishes rave dance from partner and competitive street dance forms. However, many people do perform rave dances as an expressively competitive dance.

I'm going to teach you waving today. Now waving is so crazy universal, you can make it whatever you want. It's not just up and down. It's, who knows? It's to the sky. There are different types of waves. You have straight waves, where it goes all the way across your body, including your chest into the other arm. Don't let your other arm drop or get crooked. You've got to keep it careful. So when you do it, make sure it goes all the way across, chest, arm. Now you have kick waves also, as well. When you do that it goes one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight. You can use your feet and hands. Not a lot of people do that, because it's something I kind of did. So when you do it's one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight. It looks very different and unique, so it's great to use. So when you do that you have straight, chest, kick, back over. Then you have full body wave, as well. So that's one that goes one, two, three, four, five, six, seven and eight, of course you hit at the end. So if you have like a slow song, you kind of take your time. Make sure you take your time, because if you wave too fast you're going to look too sloppy. So make sure you go use your fingers, wrist, to your body, shoulders, head. Let your head initiate the way to your chest, boom, go down to your stomach, pelvis, legs. Come back up, pelvis, stomach, chest, head, arm and bring it out. So let's try that again. We're going to do a slow count, five, six, seven, eight; and one, two, three, four, chest, six, seven and eight. Try it again, five, six, seven, eight; and one, two, three, four, five, six, seven and eight.

I'm Ava. This is my sister Loretta and this is Anthony. Right now we're going to show you some three basic moves on how to dance to hip-hop music. The main thing with hip-hop I guess is just be, like, relaxed and, like, have fun. Not too serious. Like you don't want to stand up too straight because you'll be, like, stiff, you know. You're going to stand basically, like, shoulder width apart with your feet and your knees are going to bent a little bit. This is pretty much where you live and where you start with all of your hip-hop grooves. The first hip-hop groove Loretta is going to take us through. Loretta: We can do just a basic kick-ball-change. You're going to take one foot, you're just going kick in front. Then you're going to cross it over. Then the back foot is going to step back. Then you're going to do the same thing. Kick, step, back. Kick, step, back. Kick, step, back. When you double time it, here we go. One-and-two, three-and-four, five-and-six, seven-and-eight. You could also add a little bounce to it, to the beat. That's the relaxed, chill mood of hip-hop. Let's do it again. Five, six, seven, eight. One-and-two, three-and-four, five-and-six, seven-and-eight. Awesome. Next move. Anthony: Sweet. Now we're going to break into the slide and step. We're going to slide and hit, slide and hit. And hit. Now if you want to get some more energy it's going to be a hop, and hop, and hop, and hop. Now let's put that together. To the right. Five, six, seven, eight. Slide and hop, and hop, and hop. Awesome Ava: I'm feeling hip-hoppy already. OK, so one more move we're going to show you is just basically you're going to stand shoulder width apart and your hands are going to come out and then come in and then come out and then come in. While you do that your hips are going to move with it. They're going to go out, in, out, in, out, in, out, in. Right? We're going to start together and then we're going to jump out as we do this and add a little bit of bounce to it. Five, six, seven, eight. Out, in, out, in, out, in, out, in. Awesome. Loretta: Those are three basic steps that you can do to dance to hip-hop music. Go through them one more time. First one, kick-ball-change. Five, six, seven, eight. Kick-ball-change, kick-ball-change, kick-ball-change, kick-ball-change. Anthony: Now we have the slide hop. Five, six, seven, eight. Slide, slide, slide, slide. Ava: Awesome. And the last one. My name is Tweet Boogie. I represent the South Bronx. I had my first Hip Hop crew at 14. Done some work with Jay-Z, Mary J. Blige, Destiny's Child. Traveled all over the world cause I teach hip hop culture and right now I'm ready to teach you some dances for the club. Let's get it started. So this style that I'm about to teach you right now is called popping. Arms up. Now, popping is basically a flex and release of the muscle. So, first we're going to use our arms. Our arms, the parts that we're gonna use, is our bicep and our forearm. Basically you want to make a muscle. Make a muscle… and relax. Good. Release the muscle. You have to flex the muscle, make a muscle, and relax. Good. When you relax, make sure you're completely relaxed. You have to relax this part of your body as well. So try it again. You wanna flex the bicep and the forearm at the same time. Try this again. So, flex, release, flex, release, flex, release, flex, release. Now you can do it at the same time. Flex, release, flex, release, flex, release, flex, release. There, that's how you use your arms. You can also use your tricep which is the back of your arm. Now when your arm is straight you don't want to lock the elbow, you want to leave it relaxed. So when it's straight, boom, you want to flex the arm. Good. Ninety degree - bicep, forearm. Straight - you want to flex the tricep which is on the back of the arm. Good. No ballet arms, no manicures. Good. No I'm going to show you your legs. So, wait a minute, wait for it. What you want to do is you want to use the quad in your legs. That's the thigh muscle. You want to flex it just like this. Flex, flex, flex. At the same time, that leg needs to go back. The knee needs to go back, back, back. Good. But don't do it and go down. Don't change levels. Stay, it just needs to go back. So when you bend it, it comes in a neutral point. You understand, like a neutral level? And go back, back, back, back. When it comes back, that's when you flex. Don't try to flex when the knee goes out. That's a forward pop and we only want to do the back pop. Good. Back, back, back. So now, we have to do both the right leg and the left leg at the same time. So you're flexing both right and left. Make sure after you flex you release the muscle. If you don't release it you're going to walk away like this. Very stiff, and it's not a good feeling. So, let's try to put them both together, arms and legs. So, here we go. Both arms, and legs. So 1, 2, 1, 2, 1, 2, 1, 2. Make sure that you are using the leg muscle. Do not just bring your knees back because you could insure yourself and we want less, settle settle, injury, so try it again. So, we're going to this step, it's called the Fresno. Boom, boom. Good. You want to shift from right to left. Right side, left side. Make sure the arm that's down, this arm does not go on a vacation. It doesn't be lazy, it doesn't go to sleep, doesn't go on a cruise. You need to use it as well. So, both body parts, all four body parts, are being utilized. So try it again. 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8. Now, we're going to put it to some music so you can see, ""well how can I do that at a party, or at a block party, or in a club, or with a partner""? DJ! Uh oh, ay, let's go. 5, 6, 5, 6, 7, slow, 1, 2, 1, 2. You have to use both arms and both legs. Good. That's slow, now mid tempo. Here we go, 5, 6, 7, 8, 1, 2. Good. Notice how I shift my weight from side to side. Good. You don't want to go down, up, down, up. You want to shift from side to side. Your legs are still going back. Back, back, back, back. Here we go. Good! And that's how you pop. "

Now, botting is composed of different techniques in one, but it's very stiff, very stiff. It's not loose at all. You're not even human, that's why you're a robot, that's why it's botting. So basically it deals with hitting a little bit. Hitting does help but not too much because robots don't hit all the time, they walk like a robot. So basically you have slow motion walks, you have regular walks. Now your slow motion walks can go in with your regular walks. You can be walking regularly like a robot and then just slow it down really slow, as so, but make sure you still look like a robot. While you're doing that you can isolate your body to move other places as well while you're robotting so it makes it very unique and unreal. So various stops with your arms, stops like with your right and left arms, right, left, right, left, right, left, right left, right, left, bing, up. You're moving one thing at a time. Don't go too fast; don't rush it because you won't look like a robot. You'll look human. So when you do that you can do stops, one, two, three, four, turn head, neck. Everything is one at a time. That means everything is one at a time. Neck, head, torso, body, arm, arm, arm, arm, arm. Basically you get the point. Basically I'm going to start to routine off with walking. Make it very robotic. If you have to add your own little extra flavor in it, come around someway, however you want to, that's you. And when the routine starts you're going to go slightly forward and it's going to be like a retraction. So you're going to go back, boom like you hit the wall. So one, two, three, and stop. Take your right arm five, six with your left, and you're going to go up, seven, and eight. Now that itself is going to be like a back and forth. You're going to stop as so. So let's try it again. You're going to walk very robotic turn head, left however you want to. Feet you can do in a different order, but when the routine starts you're going to go back, one, two, three, four, five, six, seven and an eight. Let's try it again just from the start of the routine. Five, six, seven, eight, and one, two, three, and four. Five, six, seven, and an eight. You're walking, boom, boom, boom. Slow motion if you will, five, six, seven, eight, and one, two and three, and four, five, six, seven, and an eight. Now let's try that with music.

Well, to show you how to krump freestyle is one thing, but teaching you how to freestyle krump, you just work on your basics and just from there. So really, you want to be your own individual person when you krump. Popping, you do the same thing for pop and locking, every other style. Freestyle is literally not thinking about it, doing anything and adding everything you know, to the best of your ability. Everybody has different styles and leverages in what they used to doing. So you're only as great as you think you are. In order to feel comfortable with your freestyle or with any style you do, you have to know what you're doing and do it your best, and work on what you're already trying to learn, so you don't really not do that, and you just try to do what you think you know in order to come out, because you think it is. So go ahead and practice. Use these techniques, and I'm going to show you a little bit of what the krump freestyle looks like.

This is Jino Fort, back again, and I'm going to teach you how to krump stomp. Now krump stomps are not just stomp and stomp all over the floor, going everywhere, because that makes no sense. You'd only look stupid, just looking like a big monkey going out on the dance floor. So basically, krump stomps are [inaudible 0:20]. It's just like jazz, arm swings, and everything else you're supposed to do. It involves precision as well to the beat, and it's not supposed to be the loudest krump stomp either. So don't think if you stomp loud that you're doing it right. A lot of people get that confused. BOOM, they look crazy after that. No, it ends right there. But basically when you krump stomp it's supposed to be precise. At least have precision and don't stomp too loud, like make an effect, but like have it precise too. Like you're going to stomp, stop it at your heel, or your toe. So you can do another move that's very clean after that as well. You don't want to look crazy, stomping real hard trying to look all nice to get attention and then not have anything to do after that. So when you do it, kind of like set stance, go to your toe, go on your heel, use your right, you can go all the way around, hit, hit, hit. Hit, hit, hit, hit, have a combination if you will. Let me show you a simple routine highlighting the krump stomp. For your first move you're going to get kind of low, like kind of muscled. You're going to go one, and come up on your toe. Two, now when you drop it you're going to move your toe to the right, so three, four, five, and you're going to do like an arm swing. We're going back to arm swings again, out, so arm swings out. Stomp, is going to be seven. So let's do that again. Five, six, seven, eight, one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, and make sure you raise that left leg kind of high so you can make it look like you're doing something. Don't just look lazy. You don't want to look lazy, look like you're really into the move and you're doing something with it. So let's try it again. Five, six, seven, eight, one, two, three, four, toe, six, seven. Let's try it again, Five, six, seven, eight, one, two, three, four, five, six seven. So now let's do it with music.

This is Gino Fort, and this is dancing to dubstep. Now, dubstep is a very controversial thing within the dance world, because the non-dancers that really don't dance like that hate dubstep think dubstep is a dance style. Well today, you're going to know, for you that think that's right, it's very wrong. Dubstep is not a dance style. There's no set moves for a dubstep dance style. Most of it is popping, though, ticking, strobing, waving, and all that, but you can just really just hit the beats. That's what most everybody does. But it's not a dance style. I'm going to repeat. It is not a dance style. So, dancing in dubstep, you want to hit the beats, and they're very signified beats that's everywhere and kind of off. Now, you can hit everything, but be careful how you hit everything, because you're going to look crazy. Make sure you take your time following me slowly, miss a couple of them, catch onto other ones, and boucne off of other ones. It's however you want to dance to it, but make sure you take your time as well. You don't have to go the fast speed or the full speed of the dubstep song all the time. Some of my favorites things when you dubstep is very sporadic but controlled movements, like if you have ba ba ba ba ba, ba, ba, bum, bum, like, add personality to it to make it look better.

Arm pops are fairly simple but they can get very, rigorous and technical. It can get from popping one part, from your whole arm, to getting just this part of your arm. That takes lots of practice but just getting the whole are to pop is not too hard. Only practicing makes you hit even harder. Let's start with simple pops. You have arm pops so when you do it, you're going to use this muscle. Like you're flexing your stuff or whatever on Instagram and all that other stuff. So, what you're going to do, put your arms up like this, and I'm pretty sure you've seen this if you took a class. You're going to go 1, 2, 3, 4. Like you're flexing your muscles. If you want to you can start by closing your fist at first. So you're going, watch carefully, 1, 2, 3, 4. Now what you can do, you can make rotations in different positions. 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8. 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5, 6, 7, 8. Now make sure you do not use your shoulders. Popping, you cannot use your shoulders. That's flexing, [wreckup]. Now, popping, you're not using shoulders. You're using just your muscles. You can also use your wrists as well. Watch carefully. 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8. Now, I'm going to show you a quick simple routine with arm pops. You're first move is going to be 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, put your left foot in, 7, out. Where you started from. 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8. Let's try that again. One more time. 5, 6, 7, 8. 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8. Now, let's try it with some music.

That's all work. All isolated. I'm not moving none of this at all. Just move your hand. So you're going down. One, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight. Now let's try it again. This is Jino Fort again, and I'm going to show you what vanishing is. Vanishing you're more of a trickster type, I would say. You can have technique. But all right, you'd rather be a trickster because the more creative you are, the better your vanishing is. For vanishing, just go crazy with what you know. So like you can use your shirt, as well. You can ball it up, put it up like this. Act like you're pulling something, and vanish it out, and it'll pop right out. So you can be like, five, six, seven, eight; out. You can roll it or you can act like you're throwing something up there, roll it up, make it - boom. When vanishing, you can use objects that you just make. Like you can make it pull. Act like you're picking something up. This goes with animation a little bit, as well. Picking and pull up. When vanishing bring it in to yourself. Comes out on the other side. When you're tutting you can do the same thing, as well. Tut, tut, throw it. Comes out the other side. You're making a new one. It's like kind of like teleportation a little bit. The best way to really understand vanishing is just to see it. So I'm going to show you a little bit.

A bone break illusion can be slightly hurtful if you don't know what you're doing so make sure you do stretch and you have the gist of the bone break/flexing before you do this exercise. Okay so the first one I want to show you is called the bone break to the left. What you're going to do is you're going to take a left or right arm, whichever one you're comfortable with, and you're going to turn it all the way around and drop it to the left. Now that's a very good illusion, it's very show-stop. It can turn almost any crowd. So take your right arm, and hold your left for leverage so it doesn't come out of place too quickly and you have resistance on it. And you're going to point to it, make sure you point your hand straight as you can. Whichever arm you're using, you're gonna point it straight. So you wanna go one, two, and on three your shoulder's going to come out, three, and on four you're going to drop your whole left arm or right arm to the left or right, like so. Four. Like that. So I'm gonna do it again. I'm gonna take it out. Make sure it's straight so you have a line and people can't see what you're doing, it is not sloppy. You don't want it to be sloppy. So you go one, two, three, see how my shoulder comes out on three? And on four you make a left. Four. There's still a line. let's try it again. Five, six, seven, eight. One, two, three, four. Another bone break move to do is slightly easier and easier to practice with. What you're going to do is put your arm up, left or right, whichever one you're comfortable with, and you're going to slowly scratch this out, it looks like a regular scratch but it's really not, you can use it as a scratch I guess, but what you're going to do is put your left hand or your right hand on your left or right elbow, like so. See how I go up? Elbow, up. Drop. And pull. Now for you to get that far back there there's a step you can take. You go, one, two, and you slowly just go like this. It's like you're trying to break your shoulder blade down a little bit, but just do this slowly. The more you do it the more it will break further and you'll be able to get farther and so eventually you'll be able to take it behind you. Now once you take it behind you you're going to let go and it's going to come under your right shoulder. So you're going to drop it like so. One, two, three, four.

Nothing's set in stone. Nothing written in the Bible. It's just something that I like to call it. And a couple of other people have affirmed what I've been teaching, as part of learning hip-hop dances, old and new. It's always, always, always useful to know that there are four main ones that almost any dance is going to fall into, and if they don't, you can make them fall into any category you want. It doesn't only have to fall into one. So first one is up. That's when you're just listening to music, and you're rocking up. Your body does this naturally. You have your headphones on. You might be listening to the radio, and you kind of like just groove up a little bit. That is your own natural up groove. It's just the accent is up in the air. Okay? Some dances that go back, I still consider this up. So next one is down. Anything that takes you down. It can just be your head. You also do this. You might switch from one song to the next on your iPods, or whatever, and you'll do this to one song and then just feels right to change it. That's your body naturally telling you, you want to go down for this song. And any dance move that falls into this category with this groove, will be a down groove. Okay? Bounce grooves are next. Those are super easy to identify, because those are the grooves that leave the floor. Running Man, Roger Rabbit, Patty Duke, any dance you can imagine, Spongebob, Percolator, that leaves the floor. Jumping is a bounce groove. That one's self explanatory. Drop grooves are a little tricky. A little harder to identify, because they come with one other groove first. Usually a lot of times it comes with a bounce groove, and then you drop. The drop is a surprise. People don't expect it coming, as opposed to a down groove, which is constantly returning to down. Drop groove, we don't know what's coming until you do it. So that's what makes that a drop groove. Once you can identify those different grooves, you'll learn faster. You can become more versatile, because you can take one groove dance move that's going up, and you can change it, and take it down. You can bounce it. Anything you want. There you go. Four grooves of hip-hop.

You're going to pop, basically you're popping your knee back and forth. One, two, three, four. You see how I'm hitting with the leg? That's what you're going to use. So it's going one two three and four. Same thing with the left leg. Going one, two, three and four. Now we're going to try to change it up a little bit. So we're going to go one, two, three, four. Now, just using legs makes this hit up here by itself. So imagine using your whole body with leg pops. So let's try it again. Five, six, seven and one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight. One, two, three, four. You're going to switch your feet, make it stylistic at the same time. Also you can use it while in the air. While the foot is in the air. So you can go one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight. Make it more stylistic. So, let's try it again. Five, six, seven, eight, one, two, three, four, five six, seven, eight.

Ticking is very subtle movements. Moving to the music, but you're really ticking. Like you're barely moving an inch a second. So it's like tick, tick, tick, tick, literally that's what it sounds like. That's what ticking is. So when you tick make sure you tense all your muscles up and make sure you're very tight and tense and you're moving to the beat. So an example, one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight. All right, you can do anything you want with ticking. You can make facial expressions, like be characteristic. Slow-mo with it, anything you want. It depends on what song it is, really. So we're going to go left, right, forward and back. So we're going to do one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight. So try that. Five, six, seven, eight and one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight. Five, six, seven, eight and one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight. One, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight. One-one, two-two-, three-four, four-four. You can speed it up, slow it down, anything you want. The thing about ticking is you can use it almost with anything and it's very versatile to use with other styles, as well. So it's not just upper body. You can use lower body, middle, high, head. You can even use a hat. You can tick almost anything you want to. So let's try it with music.
