How product design can change the world | Christiaan Maats | TEDxUniversityofGroningen

13:07
Christiaan Maats is a designer and entrepreneur who challenges the way we look at product design. Going beyond form and function he shows us how products carry deeper layers of meaning and how those layers can connect us to a bigger reality. In this Talk, Christiaan Maats explains how meaningful products can embody the change we want to see in the world and sheds light on his own vision of a circular society that integrates industrial society with its natural roots. Christiaan Maats was born and raised in Groningen, though he studied Industrial Design Engineering at Technical University in Delft. His keen interest in the psychology behind product- and brand experience took him to Sydney, Australia where he conducted a case study titled “Storytelling through Product Design”. Good product design is good storytelling, according to Christiaan. His creation of the world’s first biodegradable shoes that bloom is a perfect example of his philosophy. Christiaan considers himself a practical idealist. He is driven by his passion for innovation and creating products and brands that inspire a better future by making you smile, think and wonder. His refreshing ideas on sustainable innovation disrupt the status quo. Christiaan's diverse background and enthusiasm are great ingredients for an inspiring TEDx Talk that focuses on the society of the future and how to get there. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at http://ted.com/tedx

Biomimicry design, explained with 99% Invisible. Check them out here: https://99percentinvisible.org/ Subscribe to our channel here: http://goo.gl/0bsAjO Japan’s Shinkansen doesn’t look like your typical train. With its long and pointed nose, it can reach top speeds up to 150–200 miles per hour. It didn’t always look like this. Earlier models were rounder and louder, often suffering from the phenomenon of "tunnel boom," where deafening compressed air would rush out of a tunnel after a train rushed in. But a moment of inspiration from engineer and birdwatcher Eiji Nakatsu led the system to be redesigned based on the aerodynamics of three species of birds. Nakatsu’s case is a fascinating example of biomimicry, the design movement pioneered by biologist and writer Janine Benyus. She's a co-founder of the Biomimicry Institute, a non-profit encouraging creators to discover how big challenges in design, engineering, and sustainability have often already been solved through 3.8 billion years of evolution on earth. We just have to go out and find them. UC Connect:: How product designers will shape the world

58:38
Presenter: Professor Conan Fee -- Environmental sustainability is a global challenge for many sectors, including product design. An upcoming, free UC Connect public lecture will explore how future product designers working on electric autonomous cars; devices that incorporate artificial intelligence; the gamification of education, training and rehabilitation; and personal care and health products have the potential to both increase our wealth and help to shape our world. If New Zealand is to become a wealthier country, able to lift wages and improve healthcare, social welfare and education, we must increase our export earnings, says the head of the University of Canterbury’s new School of Product Design, Professor Conan Fee. However, we cannot do this simply by doubling the intensity of our farming or our tourist numbers, without placing an unsustainable burden on our environment. “How product designers will shape the world might be considered to be a rather grandiose title but placing this into perspective requires two things: an understanding of what product designers do and some idea of what we mean by ‘shaping the world’,” says Professor Fee. “It is important to understand that product designers do not simply add the window dressing, the artistic surface coating to make a functional product look attractive but rather engage in the entire process of problem solving,” he says. “For example, eliminating the difficulties of manoeuvring a wheelchair while holding a cup of coffee or a mobile phone requires the designer to develop a deep understanding of the problem and current solutions, before creating new ideas and figuring out how the best of these might be realised in a way that truly adds value to the end-user. Who could argue a successful product design would not help to shape the world for some of the millions of people worldwide who are wheelchair-bound?” Conan Fee is a Professor of Chemical Engineering and former Dean of Engineering at the University of Canterbury. He now heads the new School of Product Design, which offers majors in Industrial Product Design, Applied Immersive Game Design, and Chemical, Natural & Healthcare Product Formulation. With a research background in the purification of therapeutic proteins, Professor Fee has developed a large research group focusing on the use of 3D printing to improve the efficiency of a wide variety of industrial processes. He recently returned from a three-month Erskine Fellowship based at Cambridge University, exploring a range of design schools throughout the United Kingdom and Europe to bring best practice back to the new UC School of Product Design. www.canterbury.ac.nz/ucconnect

The purpose of this video is 1. to show how much fun us industrial designers have and 2. to explain to others what it is we do. Please note that we absolutely endorse the views and opinions expressed in this video (as comical as they may be, they are all very true). Also note that no iPhones were harmed in the making of this video. Innovation - Students of Product Design Episode1

12:49
This series 'Students of Product Design' is aimed at anyone interested in the product design process. This first episode looks at innovation, how to innovate and how simply changing the structure of the brief can impact on how innovative you can be. This series won't just talk about stuff, the plan is to share with you as many of the things I have learnt in the last 15 years (or so..) as possible through each stage of the design process to help you become far better designers than I can ever be. I'll be looking at research, sketching, model making, portfolios and a whole load of other things. I often think of youtube as a speed learning tool. Have you ever seen the Matrix films where Neo first learns martial arts by uploading a programme to his head or Trinity learns to fly a helicopter in minutes, that's how I see Youtube, Youtube is our version of the Matrix. So this series which is primarily aimed at students studying industrial design, product design or design engineering in university is designed to do just that, give you a knowledge boost to hopefully make your projects, designs, presentations and portfolio a lot better to improve your chances of getting a position as a designer, or your projects if you want to start your own company, anything related to design. I also hope with the content, that everyone will be able to take something away from it as many of the tips I'll give over the course of this series will be applicable to lots of areas of life. There's just isn't enough out there on product design, compared to say cookery shows it's very under provisioned and so I'm trying to redress the balance. I have a lot more planned, so please be patient, stay tuned and follow me, so that you can be alerted to when the next video is launched. www.producttank.co.uk

Product Design Saved My Hair: Navigating a World of Intersectional Design and Empathy

39:04
I'm a product designer. I'm also a black woman. I care deeply about the intersection of those identities as they apply to myself and others. Design and diversity, at their core, are a practice in focused, actionable empathy. In this talk, I'll review how I learned to systemically generate this flavor empathy with a comprehensive product design process, all through the lens of tackling one of my biggest challenges in self-care: kinky-curly hair. Regardless of who you are, or what your background is, there's a little something for everyone to take away from this. You will leave with an understanding of the end-to-end design process, how to systemically identify, challenge, and mitigate bias, and even a thing or two about how to have great hair.

Product Design at Dublin Institute of Technology

04:42
DIT's Product Design programme is the first of its kind in Ireland. Graduates of the programme have gone on to a variety of successful careers in Ireland and abroad. In the course of this four year honours degree, students are immersed in the various disciplines of product design through a unique interdisciplinary approach -- students develop their knowledge and skill sets through modules in the areas of design, engineering and business. This integrated method produces product designers who have the ability and confidence to be both creative and innovative in whatever role they choose to pursue. It gives them the necessary ability to face the challenges of designing new products and bringing them to market. Graduates of the program have proven themselves. equally comfortable in the design studio, the engineering office and the boardroom. Students learn how to produce accurate physical models of their designs using the extensive studio and prototyping facilities. They also use industry standard design software to bring their projects to fruition. In the capstone module of the programme, students conceptualise, design and develop a novel product. A number of students have developed successful products in this project which they have gone on to pursue and develop further upon graduation. While the final project is important for the students' individual development, a series of team projects over the course of the program help the students to develop interpersonal skills along with an appreciation of team dynamics. Students of the programme have won and been shortlisted for prestigious national and international awards including the Enterprise Ireland All Ireland Student Enterprise Awards, the James Dyson award, the International Forum for Design Concept awards in Hannover, Germany and the Staples Global Eco-easy Challenge in Washington DC, USA. Students of the programme have won and are regular finalists in the DIT Bolton Trust Student Enterprise awards in which they must demonstrate the ability to form their own company, design and develop a new product and produce a viable business plan in tandem. Rethinking product in a Privacy by Design World

50:55
Personal data privacy is a hot-button item today. It can often seem overly burdensome for the software developer looking to change the world. Established businesses may look at regulations and current trends in data privacy as negative impacts to product innovation. This is the wrong lens by which we should look at this. In this talk, Noble shares opportunities to innovate around the growth in data, the growth in regulations like the GDPR. He shares insights on human-centered design opportunities that can help both independent developer or an established corporation. He presents practical examples to minimize the data you collect and best practices on asking for data in software only when it provides value for the user.

Product Designer vs UX Designer | What's The Difference?

06:29
FREE UX Design Portfolio = http://www.laithwallace.com/the-ultimate-ux-portfolio-template/ The Ultimate UX Design Portfolio Template for UX Designers Create your own High-Quality portfolio with this 15-page template, Including Keynote and Powerpoint file + Instructions on how to use it. __________________________________________________________________ Product Designer vs UX Designer | The Top 3 Differences Explained In this video I breakdown the differences between a Product Designer and a UX Designer. Product design is the process of identifying a market opportunity, clearly defining the problem, developing a proper solution for that problem and validating the solution with real users. User experience (UX) design is the process of creating products that provide meaningful and relevant experiences to users. This involves the design of the entire process of acquiring and integrating the product, including aspects of branding, design, usability, and function. The main differences I speak about are 1.
