How to Lose Fat the Right Way (MEN VS WOMEN!)

When it comes to how to lose fat, there are some differences between men and women, and it goes beyond the simps differences in how we store it. In this video we look at how to lose fat, the right way, for men VS women. As you probably already know, men and women have different trouble spots when it comes to where they store fat. We’ll not only look at how men and women differ in terms of fat storage but we’ll also uncover several strategies that address the challenges that each face in their pursuit of fat loss. For men, trouble spots tend to be in the chest. Chest fat, or man boobs start to develop when men are carrying too much body fat. The waist line or Love Handles is another trouble spot. Perhaps the most notable trouble spot is in the mid section or beer belly. Even in examples of significant leanness men will store fat deposits in very specific areas of their mid section such as their lower abdominals and lower back. For women, the fat loss trouble differ. Fat deposits on the backs of the arms creating’bat wings’. Women also experience more fat storage in their lower bodies; hips, thighs and calves. You’ve probably heard the terms saddlebags, cankles or muffin top to describe these trouble spot. This is evident in women who appear to be skinny or skinny fat, you’ll see that the areas mentioned above often show signs of extra fat deposited. Many of the differences in where fat is stored come down to hormones, specifically Testosterone and Estrogen. Men and women don’t only have different trouble spots however, they also have different types of fat storage as well. Testosterone often creates more visceral fat. That is, fat stored behind the muscle sounding the organs. Classic examples of this type of fat are men that have a rock hard protruding beer gut. This is caused by the fat actually pushing out against the layer of abdominal muscle. Since visceral fat surrounds the vital organs, this type of fat is more dangerous. Typically we see higher cases of heart disease in men often caused by their increased storage of visceral fat. Women on the other hand have more subcutaneous fat. Subcutaneous fat is often driven by the binding of estrogen. While this type of fat is less dangerous than visceral fat it can still be troublesome and if you have it, you likely want it gone! When it comes to strategies for losing fat the recommendation for women is to focus on exercises, specifically strength training over steady state cardio. Strength training will allow women to add muscle to their frames which is not only anabolic in itself, but will also help increase their existing levels of testosterone which will also help aid in fat loss. For men, the focus should almost always be on nutrition. Since men have larger amounts of testosterone already, and likely carry more muscle mass as a result, they will generally want to focus on getting their eating in check. This will help lower their body fat especially when done in conjunction with a smart exercise program. In addition to the tips above regarding fat loss through proper nutrition and exercise, you can also try incorporating some of mother natures secret ingredients. Foods like Oysters for additional Zinc, Red Grapes for Resveratrol, cruciferous vegetables for their high levels of phytochemicals. Other excellent foods to incorporate are mushrooms and fresh ginger. In this video, I share with you a three phase plan for losing fat in the abdomen, love handles or waistline area, and the chest. These spots are where most men carry their fat and are the last to lose it when dieting or trying to cut down. The reason for this is actually based on our genetics, but it doesn’t mean that we cannot do something about it. Before we get started however, here is a list of the videos that I referenced in the video for you to watch: How to Stretch Your Chest - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SV7l1sfEmO0 The 7 Minute Ab Workout - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8jyhJ6TiUPA Lose the Love Handles - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yWjf2io_b6E The first thing you have to realize is that all three of these areas share the common problem in that they look bad mostly because of the abundance of body fat. You may even have developed muscles underneath, but as long as the fat is present you will never get a chance to see what it looks like. This means that your priority has to be on cleaning up your nutrition. If you refuse to eat better, no matter what else you do, you will never look better. Early on however, you don’t have to get too specific with your eating. Simply make a pass through your diet and get rid of the obvious garbage that you know is not helping your cause. Sweets, excessive alcohol, sugars, etc can all be removed and replaced with more nutritious foods. You don’t have to necessarily worry about your macros at this point but just getting rid of the junk food and liquid calories. Realizing that it will take some time to see the results of these changes however, you should start chipping away at the trouble spots in another way. For the abdomen, you want to first ensure that you can properly activate the muscles in the rectus and transverse abdominis. Most find this difficult and even when they do perform ab exercises they get frustrated at not being able to feel them. Next, you want to start adding in ab training but mostly in the form of rotational ab exercises. Instead of trying to do crunches and having the fat get in the way of the movement, you can work your abs without having to crunch. Finally, you want to incorporate moves for your entire core, such as with the 7 minute ab workout included above. When it comes to the love handles, you want to start by working the lats. Here especially, you want to focus on full contractions and range of motion to ensure proper development of the muscles that actually insert onto the top of the pelvis near your waistline. The more you can build these muscles the greater the visual differential between your waist and your shoulders and the better the v taper. Next add in direct ab work and finish up with direct oblique training for the best look as your diet gets dialed in. Finally, for the chest you want to stretch it and strengthen the muscles of the rotator cuff to posturally improve the visual appearance of your chest. From here, work the serratus anterior. This will give your chest more natural underlying support will helping to visually chisel out the area underneath. Finally, you want to make sure that as your body fat levels decrease and fat loss continues that you are working your chest in all three heads. Use the angles of the band work as an example of how to hit the upper, lower and middle chest. Relying on the scale is simply not an accurate way to gauge progress since lifting weights is likely going to cause you to gain weight while you may be dramatically lowering your body fat percentage. In this video, I show you how to measure your body fat yourself in your own home to figure out how close you are to your six pack abs. One method is more expensive than the other, however when you realize just how important this number will be to your progress, you may just find a way to add this tool to your gym equipment. First, skin fold calipers are a classic home testing option. Are they the most accurate? No. However, they are the most readily available and don’t require the set up that a DEXA scan would. The tradeoff in accuracy is not that high, given that as you become more skilled in pinching…your accuracy could be within 1-3% of the exact number. If you would rather use a more economical method for testing your body fat level at home however, you can easily do that as well. When you realize just what calipers are testing it becomes very easy to see how you can do this with a simple fifty cent tape measure. Calipers are literally measuring the thickness of the skin fold that you pinch when doing your body fat measurements. If you can (easier when you enlist the help of someone else) simply pinch in the locations shown in this video and use a standard tape measure to mark out the thickness of the fold. Average out the results performed on your chest, abdomen and thigh and determine your body fat with this chart: Ellington Darden: 1/4 inch pinch is 5 to 8 percent body fat 1/2 inch pinch is 9 to 13 percent body fat 3/4 inch pinch is 14 to 18 percent body fat 1 inch pinch is 19 to 22 percent body fat 1 1/2 inch pinch is 23 to 27 percent body fat 2 inch pinch is 28 to 32 percent body fat 2 1/2 inch pinch is 33 percent body fat and up Alternatively, if you get your skin fold measurements either with a caliper or with the old fashioned tape measure method you can input them at https://www.escablo.com/en/app/Body-Fat-Percentage-Calculator to determine your current level of body fat. Burn Fat and Build Athletic Muscle at Home - http://athleanx.com/x/home-workout If you want to burn chest fat in order to get rid of a flabby chest, you are going to have to address this problem two ways. First, you must be willing to get your nutrition in order. You simply cannot eat poorly and maintain high body fat levels because of this and hope to ever get rid of your fat chest. Once you have, then all the focus needs to turn towards your training. In this video, I show you a chest exercise combo that you can do in the privacy of your own home to help you burn fat and build a bigger chest. The power of this combination exercise lies in the fact that it can be used to overload your pec muscles while helping you to burn fat as a powerful conditioning exercise. I show you both beginner and advanced versions of this. First, let’s cover the more difficult of the two. To perform this chest and fat burning exercise, set up two benches if you are training at a gym or two boxes if you are working out at home. Get into a push up position between the boxes and perform an explosive plyo pushup while touching both benches with your hands at the top. Land back on the ground and come up to your feet by reversing the burpee position. From here, immediately jump laterally over the bench to your right and drop down into a pushup plank position again. Here you will perform a Hannibal pushup by quickly touching your toes as you hop out of another explosive pushup. Jump back to your feet and leap back to the middle to once again do the taps version of the exercise. Hop the bench on the other side and do the Hannibal pushups again and continue until your chest is either too fatigued to continue or your lungs are burning because of your conditioning. The beginner version of this bodyweight exercise to burn chest fat at home is very similar except that you will perform the first exercise from your knees. The perimeter chest exercise is to simply pulse at the bottom of the pushup for 3 reps and then hop back to your feet. Do not try to jump over the bench or box but rather perform a box jump to the top and then simply jump down. Bodyweight exercises for your chest should consist of more than just pushups. If you are going to do a bodyweight exercise to build your chest then you better make sure that it is causing overload. Far too many home chest workouts fall short in delivering results because they consist of exercises that are just too easy. While all of them are at the top of the list for the most calories burned on a minute per minute basis, they still are not the best way to lose five pounds of body fat the fastest. In this video, I show you how you can never outtrain a bad diet. If you refuse to pay attention to the quality of your nutrition and the foods you put in your mouth you are never going to have the low levels of body fat that you desire long term. Sure, anyone can follow a short term diet that allows them to lose fat for a few weeks however if you can’t keep it up then you will never be satisfied with your body fat levels over the course of the year. Mistakenly, people look to exercises as the best way to drop body fat. While you definitely need to train, achieving fat loss is and always will be better accomplished via the right nutrition plan. This goes back to the comment about never being able to outtrain a bad diet. You simply cannot make up enough calorie burn via exercise (even the most intense) to overcome bad food choices. For instance, our very own Jesse is a big sugar fanatic and a worshiper of gummy bears. Just 17 measly gummy bears has 150 calories. Even if Jesse were to do 10 minutes straight of high effort high intensity burpees, he would only burn 120 calories and he would lose that battle with a net calorie gain of 30. Now Jesse, being a hardgainer, is not concerned at the moment with his body fat levels. He was the only one wiling to do the burpees while I talked during the video being the good sport that he is. In this video, I show you how to get rid of lower back fat and pain by focusing on the two most important things...strength and nutrition. I start out by showing you just how important your diet is in getting rid of low back fat. If you make diet mistakes like avoiding carbohydrates altogether, or missing protein at a meal, or binge eating, you'll quickly start getting rolls of fat around your midsection. Once your diet is in check you must start focusing on your lower back strength through exercise. I show you four low back exercises that will not only help you develop the muscles more, but will help you to get rid of the pain that most men deal with at some point in their lives. Back pain is an extremely common problem. In fact, 9 out of 10 men will have some sort of lower back pain at some point in their lives. I can tell you, as a physical therapist that back pain comes from having a weak core, underdeveloped paraspinal and lumbar muscles and far too much fat around the waist. We already talked about how to lose fat around the waist, but without a dedicated effort to doing the right low back exercises you'll never tone this area enough to make it function properly. Perform 2-3 sets of each of the low back exercises shown in this video as an add-on to the workouts you're doing already. This can be done 1-2 times per week. Again, this won't do anything to help you lose the lower back fat though unless you work on that diet and nutrition. While women tend to store fat in their thighs and rear ends, men have the hardest time getting the stubborn fat to leave their waistline. In this video however, I’m going to dispel the proper way to attack this problem once and for all. As with any problem with body fat, your first, second and third lines of attack need to revolve around fixing your nutrition. No body fat issue is going to be tackled with exercise alone. Not only is spot reduction simply not possible or even an efficient way of going about this but it just won’t have the impact that changing your diet for the better can have. A lot of people shy away from trying to make changes to their diet and nutrition however because they simply don’t want to give up the foods that they like to eat. That’s fine, but then you better not complain when you turn around and see that layer of lower back fat accumulating around your waist. If you want to get rid of lower back fat you want to start improving the foods that you eat. Drinking too much alcohol can also be a quick place to make changes if you want to reduce your love handles and the fat that you accumulate around your waist. It’s far too easy to ingest too many calories from drinks since the liquid calories go down virtually unnoticed. Know what I mean? That said, from an exercise stand point, many people will try to get rid of their love handles and lower back fat by hitting the low back directly with hyperextensions or the love handles with side bends. Neither of these exercises will do much to decrease your body fat. First of all, the concept of spot reduction as I said is not possible. Second of all, the muscles involved in these moves (even if there were spot reduction) are not vast or large enough to cause a maximal metabolic increase by performing them. Instead, opt for the big moves like a deadlift which requires that you develop tremendous lower back strength and stability. Maintain the strong arch throughout your lower back throughout the movement and aim to increase the weight you lift on the exercise as often as possible. Over time, you’ll notice not only your low back but your entire body becoming more muscular which will help you burn more fat at rest over the long term. These include: 1. Make it a total body workout. You want to do three total body workouts per week, hitting the entire body every session. 2. Add resistance. This is key. If you don’t add some type of external weight, the chances of you boosting testosterone will be low. As great as I think bodyweight exercises can be at times, they are not ideal in this situation. 3. Move from exercise to exercise quickly. This will help you boost your metabolism so that you can burn more energy for up to 24 hours after the workout session is completed. 4. Use multi-joint and compound exercises. These are the moves that will work the greatest number of muscles at once and help you get in and out of the gym quickly. They’re also the best exercises for helping you gain larger amounts of strength as well. 5. Use Circuit Training Wisely. Use circuits, moving from one exercise to the next so that your workouts never last longer than 20-30 minutes in length. You should never be resting more than one minute between sets during a given workout. 6. Keep equipment to a minimum. There’s no need for fancy machines. All you need is a simple set of dumbbells to get the job done correctly. 7. Allow for 48 hours of rest between each workout. Remember that your body doesn’t recover as well as it used to so leave that extra time for recovery. This will ensure that you are never verging on overtraining – and a decrease in testosterone. On these rest days, feel free to add yoga or another low impact activity. 8. Vary your exercises. Keep things interesting by changing your exercises around from week to week. Not only will this prevent workout related boredom, but it’ll also ensure that your body keeps responding to the work that you are doing. So this article is for you, the men and woman who’ve self-labeled yourselves “skinny fat”. But what exactly is “skinny-fat”? Well, if you currently are skinny fat, you’ll know. For everyone else, it’s someone who can be described as skinny and fat at the same time. It means you’re thin, but parts of your body are still jiggling a little bit more than you would like. The reality is that you’re just undertrained, and although you might be pretty thin, you still hold onto some fat, especially around the belly and chest area. But, before we get to how you’re going to fix this, let’s first understand what caused it in the first place. The Reasons You May Be Skinny Fat Being skinny fat can generally be attributed to one of three reasons… 1. People who were overweight to begin with, tried to diet down, but their diet was too extreme. Then, as a result, they managed to lose a ton of fat, but they also lost a lot of muscle mass in the process. 2. People who were skinny all along and then decided to start working out to build some muscle. However, unfortunately instead of building muscle, they started packing on fat because they didn’t know how to properly train OR plan their meal plan. 3. People who are just naturally skinny, don’t workout, and eat like crap. Now, all of these scenarios lead to the same result; a skinny, non-muscular look with some persistent fat reserves around your belly, chest, arms, legs and maybe a little muffin top going on too. So does this sound like you? Well, if it does, I’m sure your next question is what can you do to fix it? What Does Your Meal Plan Look Like? If you’re a skinny fat person, this means you’ve got a fairly efficient metabolism, or else you would just be regular fat instead of skinny fat, and the problem with your current diet is that it is NOT GOOD ENOUGH. You’ve been making loads of crappy food choices and most likely, you don’t even know what your calories and macros for the day should be. Does this sound familiar? In a nutshell, you’ve probably been eating in a caloric surplus but most of the foods you’re consuming are unhealthy, high in fat, high in sugar and very low in protein. You can’t expect to build muscle without an adequate supply of protein. But since you’re in a caloric surplus, all these extra calories are simply turned into fat and stored in your fat cells, leaving you wondering why you’ve been eating MORE, but not seeing any muscle gains. So, what I want you to do is watch my Meal Plan video very carefully, even two or three times if you have to, until you understand how much and what you need to be eating to gain muscle. My meal plan video is probably the most EASY to understand meal plan video in the world. But remember, once you construct your meal plan with a specific goal for calories and macros for the day you need to actually FOLLOW it daily. It’s okay if you diverge from the plan every once in a while, but the majority of your eating should be according to your meal plan, and don’t bother asking how many CHEAT DAYS you are allowed to have, because that is YOUR problem. Do you want to reach your goals FAST, or do you want them to take 10 times as long? That’s your answer to how many cheat meals, brownies, ice creams, frappes, chips, cookies and how much candy you can have. In this video, I’m going to show you how good advice at the wrong time can become bad advice. If you are not losing fat as fast as you would like to, likely it is because you aren’t focusing on the right things. To start, it helps to define certain levels of body fat so that we are all on the same page. If you are greater than 30 percent body fat, your number one culprit is and always will be your nutrition. It is not about the amount of cardio that you are doing or whether or not that cardio workout is being done in a fasted state or not. Given the fact that cardio doesn’t really burn that many calories at the end of the day and that a day full of bad eating can quickly eclipse what you burned in your training, it just isn’t a good idea to focus your efforts there. This is the problem however, and it is repeated frequently almost every day. People will read a tip on fat loss and think that it is the best place to focus their attention as they try to lose weight and drop body fat. For instance, you have likely heard that carbohydrates such as sweet potatoes are better for you than white rice or other less complex carbohydrates. That said, if your body fat is in the over thirty percent range however, it isn’t likely that you are struggling to choose between these two options. Instead, you are likely eating french fries. The same can be said for supplements for fat loss. People have been conditioned to think that supplements are the be all and end all, a savior for those wanting to eat better. The problem with this thinking is however that once the money runs out and you can no longer afford to purchase supplements every month then what habits have you learned to eat better? Likely none. Here again you are going to be setting yourself up for failure in the long run. I always preach how workout consistency and consistency with your healthy eating is crucial for seeing long term results. The key to this statement however is that this operates on a sliding scale. Your ability to lose fat and drop down from the over 30 range to in the 20’s and teens is going to require that you only get it right 60 percent of the time. Instead of focusing on perfection (which is nearly impossible especially for those in bad shape to start), you need to focus on what can be achieved and be inspired by the changes that occur as you make those more consistently right decisions. From here, you should start to get encouraged as you watch your body fat levels drop. Each new milestone becomes a new threshold for improvement and the changes that are required to get there. So, the advice that you were given to focus more on sweet potatoes over white rice may actually become good advice again since it will be delivered to you at the time that it actually matters. This and fasted cardio start to become relevant whereas they were not going to be able to make a difference at higher levels of body fat. The key to losing weight and body fat is to follow a series of achievable goals. Best Fat Burning Workout (HOW I STAY LEAN!)

The simple fact is, long term fat loss is going to depend on your ability to build as much lean muscle tissue as possible. Metabolically, this muscle tissue is going to increase your resting caloric burn much more than the body fat that exists at this moment. In this video, I show you a simple dumbbell complex that can be done with a barbell if you have access to a full gym or a more advanced home gym. The bottom line is, this sequence of four dumbbell exercises will get your heart rate soaring and your muscles working in very short order. Perform just 6 rounds this with little to no rest between exercises in the complex and a max of 90 seconds after each round. Your goal is to perform your complex training workouts at least once a week if not more. The key to successful complexes however is to not back load the complexes with exercises that are using relatively heavy weights or that demand high levels of technical skill. Most trainers that program complexes make these mistakes and also don’t take into account the accumulating fatigue. In order to combat the fatigue to maintain good form and the integrity of the exercise, you will want to perform this complex with a descending rep sequence. In other words, you will start off by performing 6 reps in the first round, 5 reps in the second round, 4 reps in the third, and so on and so forth until all rounds are done and you are doing just 1rep of each exercise in the last. Determine the weight you are going to use by choosing your 12RM for your dumbbell overhead shoulder press. Keep the same weight for all of the other exercises in this complex. Again, this is done so that while the weight may be on the light side for the exercises you are performing, it will not jeopardize your body or risk injury when performing them in a fatigued state. The key above all else is to not rest between movements. Simply transition from one exercise in the complex to the next and try not to rest the dumbbells at all when moving from one to the next. While the first round might not feel like much of a struggle, the subsequent rounds will quickly add up and make you feel as if your fat burning has just kicked into third gear! The first is scaling the fat burning workouts by time, to match the ability level of the person performing it. The second, is compromising the difficulty level of the exercise selected to make sure everyone can do the workout. In this video, I’m going to show you a much better way to lose fat by avoiding these two common fat loss workout mistakes. It starts with an explanation on the technique of choosing a workout that is longer for the more advanced users and shorter for the less advanced. The mistake here is that you are compromising the minutes of effort that the person who is likely more in need of the program in the first place, is doing. Think about it. If you are a beginner you likely have more fat to lose than someone who is more advanced in their training. Making the beginner do only 30 seconds of work versus someone more advanced who may be doing 2 minutes is severely cutting into the amount of seconds of effort that is being put forth by that person. This is going to have the end result of having the beginner do far less work and burn far fewer calories than those performing the work for longer. The next thing that happens is, those that program fat loss workouts this way, realize that in order for this to be the case they program the same exercise for each. This compromises the level of difficulty of the exercise chosen so that it is still possible for the beginner to do it, while often times not being challenging enough for the more advanced. Both of these mistakes can be corrected by training in the Shred zone.
