Rutgers–New Brunswick faculty author Todd Wolfson spoke about his book, Digital Rebellion: The Birth of the Cyber Left from 4:00 to 5:30 p.m. on January 13 at the Alexander Library.
Contemporary protest movements from Occupy Wall Street to #BlackLivesMatter use the internet and social media in ways that have broad implications for democracy and political movements. The internet and social media are no longer simply means to communicate about the activities or goals of the movement. These networks are now the digital battlefields upon which these movements fight for social change. Are we witnessing the rise of a new Cyber Left?
Drawing on historic and ethnographic analysis of these recent uprisings and earlier protest movements of the Old Left and the New Left, Wolfson will discuss the rise of the Cyber Left and draw out important implications for the organizational structures of activist groups, democratic governance, and the use of media strategy.
A trained socio-cultural anthropologist, Todd Wolfson is currently an assistant professor of journalism and media studies at Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey. He is also a community organizer and in 2006 cofounded the Media Mobilizing Project in Philadelphia.
This program was sponsored by The Office of Summer & Winter Sessions and the Rutgers Libraries.
