She's right-handed. You can tell by the fact that her non-dominant arm (in this case, the left) is much looser and swinging more freely.
marietto2008 (1 month ago)
this video is not accurate because she is not walking but she is walking over a treadmill.
Alexa Doodles (2 months ago)
blinnlambert (6 months ago)
Did she just get her flu shot? Why's her right arm dead?
SuperKimxD (9 months ago)
Very useful, thank you so much for this!

Most Welcome

Is the model trying to exaggerate her movements for the purpose of anatomical reference?

The "standard human walk" should apply the same FOREFOOT-STRIKING technique that you show in your video "Jog: young adult female", just with less power. As an Engineer, I believe that walking like this makes no mechanical sense at all, but is rather a method that prevents our poorly designed shoes from hurting our toes. Only once you take off the shoes do you realize how this is just a way of hammering your heel onto the floor with a locked-out leg.
xl (10 months ago)
what is this "engineer" talking about ?
YukoValis Sword (1 year ago)
She left handed? Cause I would think she would start out on her right foot.
Matt Diks (1 year ago)
Be aware this is a stylised walk, not a standard. (Possibly, her standard walk). - She is locking her knee into a straight after the contact, almost till the release at the back. This prevents her knee/leg from taking the weight and bending in profile. However, if you watch the front view her legs take the weight and swiftly move to the outside. This is not natural. - Also, for some reason her left hand/arm is swinging way more than her right.

She looks like chell from Portal.
MightyElf (1 year ago)
thx so much!!!!!!!!!!! now i can animate a walk cycle :D
Jay B (1 year ago)
Thanks so much, this was a great help!
Smudgeurfudgemuffin (2 years ago)
wow you can tell she's done that a lot. very impressive!
bimosalexandres (2 years ago)
can someone mention what makes the male and female gait in walk is very difference?
Adam Saab (2 years ago)
Mostly the difference in the size of the pelvis and the torsion angle of the femur.
偽88 (2 years ago)
thank you soo much sir 45 angle would be awesome too :) making a nice isometric sprite out of it

Thank you for the feedback!!

You're awesome! Thank you. It's extremely helpful to every student.
Xell1987 (2 years ago)
somebody should send this to Anita Sarkeesian because she bitches about the hip swing of woman in video games even thats something normal for women. The body proportions of men and women are slightly different
santiago sancho (2 years ago)
Amazing, you are saving my life! THANKS!
Zjonrum (2 years ago)
can you make the videos longer, also God bless you for making theses
Chlorineii (1 year ago)
You can right-click on the video and choose to loop it.
Zjonrum (2 years ago)
yeah cool, the reason is because it's hard to study when you have reload or rewind every couple sec. if it's short can you loop at least?
endlessreference (2 years ago)
Thank you for your feedback, will take into consideration during next film shoot. Warm Regards, Mel
RJJR (2 years ago)
Thank-you so much, I got a great walk cycle animated from this!
endlessreference (2 years ago)
+Richie Jordan Thats awesome. If you are interested, you could email through a clip and some info on yourself as I am going to start showcasing animators on our website.

thank you for the refrences
Fuhe Yu (2 years ago)
Very helpful, thank you for the upload.
Hyunsung Go (2 years ago)
Wow, thanks! It helped a lot.
stiimuli (2 years ago)
This is a great reference but its a very particular type of female walk instead of a casual every-day walk. This is more of a runway model strut where her legs stay straight instead of bending to cushion the weight and she swings her hips far left and right. Most women don't normally walk this way like to the store and stuff =P
HeLIEl (3 years ago)
Do you have a female model walk style reference still trying to find one i made one in blender just freestyled it from a video i had converted it needs some work i want something more fluid like this
endlessreference (3 years ago)
+HeLIElSims sorry, no model walks

Kai Texel (3 years ago)
This helps, though I've noticed that she really only swings one arm and it looks forced.
Scott Mann (2 months ago)
Nah, I think that's because that's the side facing the profile camera.
xl (3 months ago)
a.k.a the 'gunslinger gait' from Putin
stiimuli (2 years ago)
+Kai “RoadkillFox” T well she swings both arms on a couple strides but I agree it looks as though she's trying to do the sexy runway walk.
Cypog (3 years ago)
Wow, thanks for that video, that helped me alot animating a video game character!
Matrinique (3 years ago)
-_- women don't walk like that. That's not a "standard" walk. That's a socially constructed feminine walk. Watch Codes of Gender please.
Nick Kovac (3 years ago)
+Matrinique in animation most body movements are exaggerated to show the contrast between the various poses of the body.
Errol Husaberg (3 years ago)
Just sayin.
Matrinique (3 years ago)
+Errol Husaberg wow. I'm so disappointed. what a waste. all right, I'm done.
Errol Husaberg (3 years ago)
Maybe there are just a lot of lesbians where you live. I dunno.
Matrinique (3 years ago)
...That was exactly my point. Most women DON'T walk in a fashion even similar to that. And yes, it does affect me. In fact, it affects everyone, including me and you. I'd love to discuss this further and try to show you what I mean, but... I'm not gonna get very far if you're not willing to open your mind and listen. I'll just increase your distaste for "idiotic tumblr feminazi," whatever that is. (I don't go on tumblr). I'm guessing they're man-hating and just as equally narrow-minded. I'm betting you're in your teens. You sound very intelligent. If you ever get the chance, anthropology, culture and media studies will be interesting for you. And if you're an animator looking at these videos for references, you NEED to know this shit, as your livelihood and our society's culture is shaped greatly by YOUR work and YOUR art. The definitions of "standard" and "feminine" will always be skewed, some times more than others. It's our job to make sure that's pointed out, especially if it's trapping people into acting and living in ways that they don't actually want.
cfqcmc (3 years ago)
Thank you!, this will help me greatly the game im developing for Universety.
mvaranda1000 (3 years ago)
How many different speeds does your library have for this lady walking (other than running)?  I am looking for reverence for a more relaxed and a slower walk. Thanks in advance.
endlessreference (3 years ago)
Hey, thanks for your enquiry, I'll have a look through my files and see if i have anything to suit your request. Cheers, Mel
Sonny Fernandez (3 years ago)
Animating someone walking forwards is the WORST. This should help! Like everyone else. Thank you...too bad I discovered it when my movie is almost done....
endlessreference (3 years ago)
Thanks for the feedback Sonny :-) You should send us a link to check out your movie when you are done!
Miriam Pålsson (3 years ago)

Hi, love that she is wearing shorts because they show how the hips move. Unlike on other videos here model is wearing 2 colours.
Rinat K (4 years ago)
Hmmm... Same video but with male in it have twice less views. I think I know why
AIIUserNamesInvalid (4 years ago)
one of her arms extends much further
Iana Alves (4 years ago)
Thank you for this video, really useful.
Sketch MacQuinor (4 years ago)
Thank you so much for your help.
Abel Gonzalez (4 years ago)
This is not right, I've researched foot movement enough to know that although this is how 90% of people walk today, this is not the correct way, for example she starts to lean near the end of the video and as she mounts her foot to the ground her back arches an unusual amount that is not good long term. The correct motion would be mounting the ball of the foot first, not the heel.
bmo (5 months ago)
Actually she lands with the outside of the foot first, which is normal.
Robert Bowen (7 months ago)
Anyone animating the way you suggest wouldn't be able to get a job as an animator. While this may be good advice for people trying to reduce impact on their joints, the advice is *really* bad for anyone trying to do good animation work.
Right way.
Until now, i didn't know that there was a rightway to walk. People know a lot of CGI, little of the human being. Sadly.
Animation Diaries (1 year ago)
awesomekids kids I agree with you. When we see a video of a person walking we accept their walk without a problem. However if we see an animated character walking awkwardly we assume that it is a poor animation instead. This is the only thing we have to be aware of.
Brant Powell (4 years ago)
Thank you! Extremely helpful reference for animation.

Leow wei seng (4 years ago)
Did you have Real time video for this references ?
ninhydren (4 years ago)
thank you thank you thank you. this is exactly what I needed. I am self teaching animation and the grid helps more than just watching people in the store. nice to have 2 views at the same time.
dezmondel (4 years ago)
WOW... where have you been all my life :] thanx for the excellent reference m8t!
PermaKitten (4 years ago)
Thank you, was quite helpful at the creation of my new animated video!
HyenaHarlie (5 years ago)
Thank you for this!!! i know some people dont get it, but this is an animation reference. It helps that there's a grid because i can see where exactly the body moves! I always have a HARD time making a character walk without the body looking static because i can't seen to get all the subtle parts of the movement, such as her pelvis and shoulders, and even the head bobbing with the movement.
She's used to walk with a bag at her shoulder. The bag-wearing arm's movement are dampered while the other one's are over compensated.
As long as the rig aloows it, yes.
This also differs from conventional walk cycle theory with her standing leg being fully extended from contact all the way through passing position. I think it's great
kenonerboy (5 years ago)
some people dont have access to his work, so they use this instead
marawingi (5 years ago)
i don't understand the point of this series. E. Muybridge has already done all this and more years ago, and his work is much more complex, much more involved and definitely much more reliable.
Perfect Irony (5 years ago)
to be fair people walk differently when they know they are being watched
dpni (5 years ago)
her hip rotations seem a bit to exaggerated imo
Eugen Ides (5 years ago)
They could but it would be a lot of work for such tiny details. unless ofcourse it's a very heavy person walking :) in that case the jiggle is usually there, and pronounced
Dzeinii (5 years ago)
She often wears bags on her right shoulder. Otherwise - great reference
kelyaum (5 years ago)
or I mean jiggle
kelyaum (5 years ago)
sometimes with the standard walk I've seen that the thighmuscles wiggle while walking can they also do that in animation? because I've never seen that before
davis3d (5 years ago)
I'm kind of wondering why she isn't using her right arm. This is a lopsided walk.
sockan85 (5 years ago)
How muck slowdowned is the walk. 0.5?
Lu Ciel (5 years ago)
I'm creating some 2D sprites and this is totally useful. Thank you so much!

whoa ! thank you very much for this Reference !! :D
cutelittleball (5 years ago)
Any information on the measures? The youtube video has 25 FPS, I'm guessing it's slowed down to 25%. When I watch it sped up, the girl seems quite small, something like 1.54 m (~5' 1"). Is that about right?
Mayer Inkwizytor (5 years ago)
perfect reference for aniamtion , thank you so much!
Rev. C. (6 years ago)
Watching these are great at realising quite how weird a skeleton is
svrack (6 years ago)

haha you think it was free to produce these vids? - dream on bud :)
Rachel Ann Banyas (6 years ago)
I haven't read through all of the comments so I apologize if this is a repeat...did anyone notice that her gate is off on her right side? Arm swing is minimal and she adducts the right hip more than the left causing her to over compensate by pushing the hip out during the reload phase. I can bet she has lower back pain and knee problems on that side :(
Shyam Krishnan (6 years ago)
thanks for this........
AmyD (6 years ago)
I know a few animators who would love these references. I'm totally sharing!
