How to find and do work you love | Scott Dinsmore | TEDxGoldenGatePark (2D)

54515 ratings | 5245204 views
Scott Dinsmore's mission is to change the world by helping people find what excites them and build a career around the work only they are capable of doing. He is a career change strategist whose demoralizing experience at a Fortune 500 job launched his quest to understand why 80% of adults hate the work they do, and more importantly, to identify what the other 20% were doing differently. His research led to experiences with thousands of employees and entrepreneurs from 158 countries. Scott distilled the results down to his Passionate Work Framework - three surprisingly simple practices for finding and doing work you love, that all happen to be completely within our control. He makes his career tools available free to the public through his community at http://LiveYourLegend.net In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations) This talk was shot shot and edited in stereoscopic 3D by Golden Gate 3D and Area 5. http://gg3d.com http://area5.tv To view in 3D, click here: http://youtu.be/5o1nCKGk5Bs

This was an AMAZING talk. People say it's fluff because it's more of a philosophy, purpose is not something that can be answered for you. Like he said it's not about doing something crazy, it's about making life something that matters to YOU. Surrounding yourself with people that inspire YOU. It's going to look different for each person. Really think about the fact that life can be gone without warning at any second, just like this young man. Each second you have, fill it with something that feeds your soul. He did live out HIS dream- he wanted to help people discover their passion and purpose. Understandably, not everyone can switch their environment or quit their day job...I don't think that was the point. For example, if your family means everything to you, supporting them is doing something that matters to you. That's the point. Also, it's never too late to begin projects or to change your lifestyle- even if it's just in small ways. I mean no one has life "figured out", we all just have to try our hardest to make it work for ourselves.

3 things 100% in our control 1) surround yourself with passionate ppl 2) Learn about yourself 3) Learn your own impossible and push that. I do agree for 1 and 2 you said as I tested in self. I discovered and surrounded with passionate ppl who inspire me and it is real in our control and learning about self as well and now I am ready to test for 3 . Thank you

I feel like I'm the opposite of a lot of creative professionals. Most people try to quit their full time job to become an artist...and I think I may need to stop trying to be a full time illustrator or graphic designer. I think I've been trying to make this work because it's what I've always been told I should do, but I honestly only do this work because I'm good at it. Not good enough to build a career out of, but good enough to delude myself into thinking it'll click. Except it's been 10 years and my prospects of being a successful illustrator are barely better than where they were when I started. I'd say that yes, I too am on a quest to find the work I can't live without doing.

Finding a passion is so important. When you meet equally passionate people you get to know a positivity like you've never known before. That can allow you to go after greater passions and once you do that you're your own force

REST IN PEACE SCOTT! It is sad to know you are no more to inspire people around you.
brooklyntola1958 (4 months ago)
The unfortunate reality is that most people do not have passions that align with professions they can realistically make a living off of. If everyone could truly do what they love as a career, the work force would be full of professional video gamers, travelers, YouTubers, basketball players, football players, food critics, actors, actresses, and recreational fishermen. And unfortunately, society does not run off of these types of professions. Better advice would be to find a realistic profession that you are good at or you like (even if it is not your true passion) and use the money and stability it gives you to pursue what you are truly passionate about. That is the philosophy I try to live by, and I live a very happy life for it.

This comment section seems to be quite lively with discussion, so I thought I'd describe what I'm going through and see if anyone has any advice. I'm from London and studied Philosophy, Politics and Economics. I then went into a public policy for two years. Hated it for the most part and became quite anxious and had low self-esteem. I decided to take a career break and move to Germany. I've enjoyed the break here and being able to be anonymous but have missed being home. Only thing is everytime I attempt to look into a new job, beyond something entry level I just talk myself out of it and say that I won't be any good and then I find myself watching these youtube videos until late. My real passion is going to the theatre but I don't see how I could work it into a career. I find myself considering things and then talking myself out of it. It's quite frustrating that I did quite well in school and am not one to shy away from hard work but I feel quite directionless and not sure how to progress. The thought of going back to my old job makes me super nervous but I'm not sure at this point what else I'm qualified for. So any advice on how to get out of this rut would be super welcome, thank you!

Know yourself, the idea of a "calling" in part means that career choices of work must be suitable to you. "The best of men are they that earn a livelihood by their calling and spend upon themselves and upon their kindred for the love of God,." – Baha’u’llah

L 9999 (5 months ago)
Okay, this is the old "follow your passion" talk, which translates to not absolutely NOT needing to worry about paying for student loans, worry about supporting family, or just being able to eat. When you are born into a supportive family environment, you can afford to take "the road less traveled." If you come a poor or working class family and have spent your childhood trying to navigate chaotic situation after another chaotic situation, you aren't going to find any help here. This talk is for the upper middle class and wealthy who are a bit higher on Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs. Sometimes you need to focus on BRINGING YOUR PASSION to whatever job you can get.
