(PART 2: EUROPE) Asia is the largest and most populous continent in the world. From the physical extremes to the cultural, it's a continent that has shown tremendous diversity from one end to the other. But what exactly counts as Asia? Where are the Asian borders? This video is part two of a three part series. In part one, we covered the specific Asian borders following the coastal regions from the Tumen River between North Korea & Russia to the Suez Canal in Egypt. In between, we went over Japan's Bonin (Ogasawara) Islands, the Malay Archipelago, Indonesia's border with Papua New Guinea, the Wallace Line, the Weber Line, Asian continental shelf, the Middle East, Yemen's Socotra Archipelago, Afro-Eurasia and Egypt's border. In part two, we cover the most controversial Asian border section of Europe starting from Egypt, through Lebanon, Syria, Cyprus, Turkey, Georgia, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan and Russia. We end on the eastern side of Russia (Siberia) bordering North America, which is where part three will commence. Many feel Asian and Europe shouldn't have been separate continents to start with, as there isn't a clear physical geographical divide between the two. In fact, a few countries teach the continent of Eurasia as a result. This made this video particularly challenging as nothing is definitive and is all open to interpretation. The European border with Asia is relatively easy and not complicated to get. Draw it at around the city of Istanbul, Caucasus mountains, Ural Mountains and the Ural River. This includes a bit of Western Kazakhstan. Now where North of Urals do you draw the border? Here it gets a bit more complex but still not too bad. The Nenets speak a Uralic language despite looking and being mostly East Asian/Siberian/Mongoloid genetically. The ones living West of the Urals are considered European, while those to the East are considered Asian. Not perfect obviously but good enough. No borders are perfect. So you include the Arctic island of Novaya Zemlya, because why not? Its no less European than the areas of the mainland south. Nenets lived both places and its West of the Urals so why not? This makes a couple of countries 'transcontinental'. They don't have to be one or the other. Russia, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Turkey and Georgia are such countries. Russia is mostly ethnically, linguistically, historically, religiously and politically European. Kazakhstan is mostly (Central)Asian. Turkey is a bit more mixed but closer to Asia(Middle East, Near East and Central Asia) than Europe. Georgia is mostly religiously, culturally, historically and politically European but its a close mix. Azerbaijan is mostly Asian, very similar to Turkey by comparison. Now what do we do with Cyprus? Well, that is complex but its only a small cog in the larger European wheel. They are historically, culturally, linguistically, politically closer tied to Europe than the Near East but ever since the Ottomans they've become more Asian(Turkified). About half the Island is Turkish. So what do we consider this one? Its a toss up really, I'd go with 'transcontinental' despite there not being any significant geographical or climatic barriers between the Turkish part and the Greek Cypriot part of the Island. The Island of Cyprus is 'transcontinental' while the country of Cyprus is European. What about Malta? Well genetically they are mostly Southern Italian, not actually very close to Semitic speakers but they do speak a Semitic language. However, they are culturally, historically, religiously and politically close to Europeans. So Europeans they are, despite speaking a non-European language.

Narnia is in Europe! Also, from the geographic point of view, there is no such continent as Europe, and there is no such continent as Asia, there is Eurasia.

I would like to see a video about the nature of Russia and Turkey in terms of continantel identity. Culturally: The majority population of Russia is west of the URal and shows a European culture (orthodox christians, slavic language and culture, founded by slaves and vikings from the north east of the continent) Turkey: majority of population turk descent, so technically central asian, turk language, majority religion Islam. However, Islam could be also considered European (Bosnia, ALbania, Bulgaria etc.) and Turkey as well as the Ottoman Empire charde a history with Europemuch like the eastern ROman or Byzantine Empire. Addtionally a significant portion of the Megacity Istanbul and Turkey lies in Europe. Pus: Usage of Latin alphabt since end of WW1 and Attatürk. In recent years under Erdogan, however, Turkey made a swing from Europe to its Eastern neighbours and its Central Asian, Islamic culture. So Turkey is a tough one. I woud say: Russia: Geographically mostly Asian, cututally European, political Both Turkey: Geographically mostly Asian, culturally maybe both, but a lot of typically asian cultural features, political: we will se in the future where Turkey is going. (Authocracy, return of religion in politics, foreign policies)

I will begrudgingly accept that a tiny sliver of land connecting 2 enormous bodies of land isn’t enough to call the 2 large bodies one continent. But I refuse to accept that a continent can’t be defined as a large land mass surrounded 80-100% by ocean and/or sea. Africa can be its own continent, but to me, there is no Asian continent; there is a Eurasian continent with the REGIONS of Europe, Asia, and the Middle East, with Russia and India doing their own things. I define the Region of Asia to be countries that are majorly home to people of the East Asian race. I define the Middle East to be the countries home to Arabic people, and I would include India in that, but since the culture and physical traits of the two peoples are very distinct, I’ll leave India separate. Similar situation with Europe and Russia; the Region of Europe are countries home to Caucasian people, which should include Russia, but since Russia insists on setting itself apart from Europe, I’ll consider it separate as well.

The image used for the markers on the two continental sides of the "Orenburg" Ural River Bridge are actually the ones in Atyrau. I don't know if they have identical markers in Orenburg or not, but the ones in this video are from Atyrau.

I consider the entire Caucasus region as European. The border between the Caucasus region and the Middle East is where I would draw the border between Europe and Asia. I would also count Cyprus and all Greek Islands as European. I would definitely count Turkey as Asian though, I don't see how people can argue that it's more European than Asian when over 95% of it's land and people are Asian and it's culture is so different from Europe. In my opinion, Kazakhstan is culturally more European than Turkey is.

Why would you even mention a countrie's political borders as a factor for where a continent's border should be drawn? With the exception of mentioning it as interesting notes in a video such as this I see no reason why an artificial border should have any impact at all on the definitions of something purely geographical. (Yes, I consider splitting the island of New Guinea to be absurd when drawing the line between Asia and Australasia/Oceania). Australia - a country. Australasia/Oceania - a continent or perhaps a region. Please separate politics and human borders as much as possible from geographical maps.

With Asia being so large and culturally diverse, why then are only some people called Asian? Doesn't it seem a little racially biased or just racist to only call certain people Asian based on hair color and eye color/shape? A person from Saudi Arabia is from Asia but not considered Asian!?! Maybe we should stop calling people a certain moniker and say they live in blank and have or had ancestors from blank.

Cyprus is in Europe NOT Asia.We have the euro as our currency, we joined the EU- UNLIKE F*CKING TURKEY-, our history is European and our language is Greek -A EUROPEAN LANGUAGE- For therefore I don't believe that Cyprus Belongs to Asia and this has to change Also if you believe that Cyprus belongs to Asia for the f*cking fake Turkish side you should know that the northern side of Cyprus was and will always be Cypriot.
